2016 Ford Explorer Won't Start

Car continues to intermittently not start. No rhyme or reason.

My 2016 Ford Explorer has been doing the same thing and just a couple of days ago got to the point where it wouldn’t start. I had it towed to the shop on Saturday June 8, 2024 and come to find out it was due to a bad starter which caused the relay fuse yo burn out and burn a wire. Needless to say is all fix for the low of $280. I’m back on the road.

I have a 2015 Ford Explorer Limited. Started replaced because at one time that was the issue. But before the starter issue the vehicle would start every now and then. I would push hard on the start button sometimes and just tap sometimes and the vehicle would start and sometimes not at all. My battery is good. The relay is good. The fuse is good. The thing I can figure is the push button start inside the vehicle. I can remote start my Explorer with no problem. Then push the start button to fully start the vehicle then the push button works again..

If you look at dash it is continuing to say press brake to start. Makes me think there's an issue with the brake pedal position sensor. I'd say that's where the issue is going to be.

Jorge- It's been 4 years, what ended up being the problem to fix the issue? Did you have to change the starter?

I check the battery, started and solenoid and none were the problem. Cleaned both terminals which weren’t the problem. I checked the fused and those weren’t the problem. What I did was pealed back the lead that connects to the terminal. Underneath there was massive amounts of corrosion. Cleaned off the corrosion and tighter the clamp that connects the lead to the terminal. Put the terminals back on and boom it started right up.

Problem solved. Replace all seven relays in the fuse box (driver's side in the engine bay). These relays serve to trip the ignition when the pedal is not depressed or the door is ajar, etc. The pins on the relays corrode (turn green) from humidity if the car stays parked a long time and can trip the starter with a false signal. They're cheap to replace and you can even do it yourself. Simply pull the old ones out and plug the new ones in.

Eduardo what are the Relay numbers your replaces ? I’m having the same issues you had before. I’ve checked my Starter and ect fuses and they looked fine. No blown fuse.

I have the same problem we 2017 Ford Explorer I took to the dealer and a dealer say the battery is good but I still have problem yesterday question do you fix it?

I just had this issue myself. I will be taking it to ford monday hopefully they can fix it. I just dont understand why ford hasnt addressed this issue since so many are effected.

Our solution was to re-crimp a bad crimp connector attached to the positive terminal. This resolved the problem for several months. We had one more incident. Cleaned the battery terminals and connectors and all of the other connectors attached to both terminals. So far, so good. This is a fleet vehicle.

I have a 2017 and recently have the same problem. Never had any issues over the past 2+ years, I got the battery check and it’s fine. Wont even unlock nor any electrical functions of the car work.

The same thing is happening to my 2016 Explorer sport. The dash lit up with track warnings and power steering all kinds of stuff wouldn’t start. The mass flow air sensor was clicking. I go back into the car and I now have no power. I can’t even unlock the car or lock with the key fob

I know this is already too late, but sometimes when the truck doesn't start it's because the key is dead, you must put it in the part of the trunk where you rest your arm, there is a place for you to put the key and start your truck while you fix that

my 2016 edge is also doing this, I think it has something to do with the "start on and off" button. I've learned however that you can accidentally put your car in a mode called "Full Accessory Power active", most other videos i've researched shows this message coming up on the dash board message screens. Message reads: "Full accessory Power active "YES". When you hit the start on and off button without pressing the brake you will inadvertently put your vehicle in this mode, what appears to happen next is that the battery begins to drain its charge because it is technically the same as turning your key to the "ON' position on a standard key operated ignition and walking away. You battery will soon discharge. What I haven't figured out yet is how to take it out of this "mode", some videos say you have press the button again without depressing the brake, I've tried to no avail. The Tell Tale sign is the blinking green light on the start button. When you car is operating properly the light should remain solid green, when I press mine it blinks, like in this video here, and he also shows the "ford message of death" Full Accessory Power Active. Personally I believe this is some corp design BS to get you to bring your car to the dealership bc no one else seems to know how to get this turned off. I've had to jump my car off 4 times in one day. Frustrated, and I used to like Ford!

@@briceidamartinez1211 I actually had to replace the battery and it stopped. The edge has accessories running after you turn the engine off, if your batter is to weak it will continue to try and turn off accessories and drain the battery completely. Replace your battery

Happened to me twice. First time I let it sit for 24 hrs it came in next day. Just happened to me yesterday I took fuse 23 out from the fuse box in the car and let it sit 24 hrs and turned the car on with my key fob remote start and it came right on. I’m guessing fuse 23 is the acc fuse or has something too do with it.

Tried changing the battery and it didn't fix it. Called a friend for help and they just jabbed the starter with a bar and it started right up. I guess sometimes the starter will just get stuck. Hope that helps.

Check the main relay on the under the hood fuse box. Is a gray relay remove it and connect it again and try it again

I have a 2015 Explorer limited. I have not checked the grey relay. Before I replace the push start ignition I will remove and clean the grey relay.

Identical problem for me! My 2017 would not start yesterday. Went through car wash the evening prior. Not sure is undercarriage wash messed up something? No idea! It is frustrating.

Mine ended up being a mouse got into the wires under the fuse box under the hood. Chewed apart the one small wire that operated everything!! Once that was reconnected it started right up.

Yeah my 2017 explorer less than 50k miles on it have this same issue. This happen to me 3 different times where the car won’t start. All three times I didn’t have the car running but lights were on in the interior and for some reason it doesn’t want to start after that. When I go to start it everything works normal, I hear a clicking noise like it wants to start but never catches. I jumped it twice both times it worked this third time TBD. Maybe I should try some of these solutions in the comments.

It's your starter wire not making connection. Starters not getting power bud. Puddle is because the engine isn't running no vacuum.

What was the problem ? Ford.. Fix Or Repair Daily Lol. I have one, it's a 2017. I've never had a problem.
