With Ford’s Australian manufacturing having shut down on Friday October 7, 2016 - after having started up on Thursday August 20, 1959 - the Falcon nameplate, one of the longest running badges in the world, has also had its day.

So, you're saying the FGX inline 6 is exactly the same OHV carby-driven 2.8l lead fuel drinker from waaay back in the day? The block itself may be similarly set up to the original but the head has ADVANCED to a DOHC setup, the carby fed leaded fuel system has ADVANCED to unleaded fuel injection and the distributor driven ignition system has ADVANCED to the computer managed coilpack system. All these changes and more on top allowed the 2.8 litre engine to ADVANCE to a 4.0 litre engine making enough power and torque to keep up with an XY GTHO Phase 3 down the drag strip. Not bad for an "ancient" engine that "hasn't seen any advances in almost as long as decades" by your account... The 2.0 ecoboost "was arguably the best fit for this application, unless you wanted performance which is what plenty of Ford buyers did want". Are you trying to shame Ford fans here? Like it is wrong to value performance over saving fuel? Tell me, what size load can you tow with an in-line 4 turbo compared to the in-line 6 or V8? Not to mention that people prefer the "ancient, unadvanced" 6 cylinder for it's sound and historical appeal over the ecoboost. Are they wrong for doing so? Try telling Nissan fans that the R35's V6TT is a better fit for the skyline badge compared to it's RB engines and that skyline fanatics are foolish for idolizing those "ancient" in-line sixes. If there is one consolation from local manufacturing closing it's doors, it's that great Auzzie cars like the Falcon won't have it's name unfairly disgraced by uneducated, imported-econo-shitbox-driving millennials posing as motoring journalists whom, seemingly and ironically, have NEVER driven a car past city limits. Dislike.

It's car reviews like these that killed off ford and holden, the attitude that things haven't changed much so it must be bad is typical of so called car reviewers. Ford's and Holden's were built with our conditions in mind, and that means solid engines and drive trains, not fancy switches and gizmos.

G'day...The bloke talking about the Falcon....GEEZ Mate...You have NO IDEA..What a prat...The N/A 4.0 litre I6 195 kw/391 Nm..six cylinder engine mated to the 6 speed ZF..is fantastic..I ought to know...I've got one...The Turbo is phenomenal but the N/A is so sweet , quite economical if you want it to be...and tons of power/ torque for easy trouble free driving..The driving position is a myth...Anyone that owns a Falcon more more than five minutes will tell you that..Dated maybe , but how could they develop it more with no money to develop it with..What little they had for FGX..they did a great job..Cheers Rod..

i have the XR8 Sprint, it's the 2nd XR8 I've owned and in a long list of falcons I've owned since i started driving and i must say it's the best Ford I've ever owned. I will never sell this car in my life time.

The ford is a piece of shit. It's so archaic. From the interior, to the design and the chasis. So outdated and drives like shit and handles like a boat. A lot of road noise in the interior too. The only good thing about it is the xr6 turbo engine and the zf auto box. I'm not surprised ford have shut down. Couldn't keep up with the times

Mr Mysterious Mr Mysterious The VF2 I owned was worse, if you think the Falcon suspension is terrible I have news for you. The Commodore has cheap macpherson struts like a Mazda 2 and handles every bit like the 1700kg car (pretty close to a boat, I don’t think you’ve owned a Commodore yet alone driven a Falcon) it is while the Falcon is far more nimble. Commodore’s saving grace was it’s centre console and climate control vents... without it it looks worse than an interior than that found on a G6E. BSM, RCTA and Remote start are part of what set it apart really, otherwise the Commodore feels straight like it’s from 2006. Ask any American of the Commodore’s ugly design , and their scathing opinion of the SS will tell you exactly why it only sold less than 15k units over 3 years in a country 10x more population than Australia. If I bought a G6ET I would’ve kept it most likely, but I only bought a MY16 SV6 and it was appalling in the long term. I’m glad 535d prices went down, without it I wouldn’t know what a good car was.

Here 7 years later. Yes Australia has lost part of it's identity now. Al the cars you'll see on the road are Japanese cars, mostly Toyotas (Although Toyota IS a good car) and Korean cars as well as a few older Aussie cars and the occasional Territory. And maybe you'll see imported dangerous gigantic American cars sometimes.

Not quiet clear how this review can criticise the 4.0 6cl engine considering it really has been engineered to perfection over the past 30+ Not many manufacturers can lay claim to something like that... quiet possibly the most reliable engines once available to Australians. My FG has 290,000 klms and it still runs as it did at 100,000, these engines dont start to tire until around 450,000. Their built so well people keep and have them for so long, with no need to rebuy, which was possibly Fords Demean in the end.

Must have been a Holden or Euro boy review because these cars only got better and better. Only down side is rear bushes in IRS models from AU-On. Nobody wanted a 180kw turbo 4cyl carrying the big car they wanted a Barra 182/190/195 or more that started in the 2002 B-Series. He probably drives a Captiva because his wife said so.

Yes! Had two FGs and the driving position is brilliant. The commentator obviously likes sitting down in a car like grandma. The driving position, the steering and handling, the power torque and economy and especially the RELIABILITY of the 4L IL6 are outstanding. I've had 4 over the years and never a problem, never a leak. Unlike my Toyota Camry and just spent $3,00 fixing a Holden Cruze Chevvy crap-box.

the reason why it was stupid to bother with the ecoboost in the first place is because it only bet the 6 cylinder by 1L/100kms, which is silly for ford to even bother with such a small difference considering a gas version of the barra wouldve saved u just as much money on fuel. for the size of the car, the barra was a perfect powerhouse that would last as long as it would take your kids to grow up and leave house. my mum used to drive an AU wagon which had an earlier version of the barra and that would tow a 2 tonne boat, a boot full of camping gear and 4 people easily. it never broke down even after we sold it with 230,000kms on the clock. you do the same with an engine half the size and youre basically asking for it to blow up

What......just where could they" buy a package for better money" in the class of the XR6. There was little to beat this in its class for the $$$ . Particularly the Turbo 6 versions. They are pure dynamite and comfort, G6E Turbos are a true Grand Touring machines with no equal at double the asking price. And cheap on fuel on long runs 8.4 litre per 100 out of mine. 270kw under the boot is just a delightful when you desire it on an Australian highway. Where you gonna buy that for under AUD $ 47,070 NEW anywhere on earth??? I really want to hear your answer. ??? Either of you 2. .

djp4nfa They never upgraded it from the FG Mk1 onwards as they didn't want to invest money in something that they were going to kill. The best FG to FGX interior was the G6E Turbo with creme interior. Very nice. I also very much like the BF MkII Fairmont Ghia with the creme leather and piano black centre console.

i traded my 08 BF XR6 in for a 07 Mazda MPS. i regret it so much! these are so much better on fuel than smaller cars and more practical with family. i could get over 800km on a tank in my falcon

I must admit the current Falcon hasn't evolved internally very much from my 2004 BA wagon, but I'm not trading in the BA as that would be a mistake. Yes, I also get up to 800Km on a 65 Litre tank and love it on the highway. If I was to trade it in, what could replace it? That's a real hard question for the same price range.

compared to the commodore this simply falls flat in the interior department with sub-par materials and build quality countless reviews all echo this fact. then to top it off the commodore time and time again showed in tests that it offered superior braking 60-0, better lap times, and over all superior handling. so better performance, better interior materials, and better build quality. ford only has it on power and even then it still barely edges it out in straight line performance. GG falcon you won't be missed.

Well not quite, remember the BA flogged the VY in every comparison, from XT, to XR6, XR6 Turbo, Fairmont Ghia, then FG pretty well beat the VE hands down. In Fuel economy, handling, power, towing capacity, interior was so much better than Commodore since BA. Falcon has always been a better car for a long time. It was Holden's service and marketing that gave them the sales. The Falcon is the better product. If Ford went all out with FGX, it would knock VF off it's perch like BA and FG did, remember the VE wasn't much better than the outgoing BF...

I live in England and we have the Ford Mondeo. Does this Falcon share the same platform with the Mondeo and why do we (England) get smaller sized engine cc's?. Is it because you're emissions in Australia are less regulated than ours and perhaps petrol is cheaper. At the moment in England our unleaded fuel is £1.16p per litre. In Africa they got the XR6 Cortina and XR8 Sierra with big engines, we didn't get these but if we did the price of these classics now we be a fortune!. Did Australia get these cars?.

TheTruth IsOutThere no Australia only has the 3.3 inline 6 in the cortina and RS cosworth Sierra. The XR6 only came out in the falcon here with the 4.0 inline 6. Grew up in South Africa with those 3.0S cortinas. Miss them!

go away Ford Falcon, phew finally there is progress to have better, more practical cars to fit for the market. Even though I drive a 2010 Ford Falcon, the driving position is rubbish. I'll get a backache within 10mins of driving it but its looks wont stop me enjoying it. I'll upgrade mine soon to a modern, better built Mondeo or the iconic Mustang.

keratase1880 My AU3 SR Falcon ergonomics was better. You hunkered down nice and low. They stuffed it with the BA onwards. Mustang has a two star crash rating and the Pommes really love the Mondeo. I'll take a Mazda 6 over the Mondeo though, or even an Optima.

ive got a 2012 fg2 xr6 and sure the drivers seat was uncomfortable - the only drawback to this wonderful wagon- i love this car and ive had falcons for the last 25 odd years and also ive been a career a grade mechanic for 38 years, the falcon has always had its faults like anything else but, by and large a fantastic car full stop.I later found out that a 26 stone woman bought my car new and im the second owner! go figure the seat thing eh? p.s. the seat has now been re inflated we are away all good.
