I had a G6E Turbo as a company car. I did a 400 meter event. With the traction control on it had wheel spin in the first 3 gears but still did the 400 in 13.05 in standard road trim and tyre pressures. It was a sleeper that shocked a lot of people that thought they had fast cars.

i have a 2010 g6e turbo with an un opened bottom end here in nz with about 260ks on the clock had many falcons before this one but this was the panicle imo and wanted to get one , old boy owned it before me did a lot of open road driving. Im no stranger to turbo 6s but absolutely love this thing have just done a bunch of mods to it and got it dyno tuned it made a staggering 550rwhp on moderate boost i did the valve springs oil pump gears and the head studs but all in all straight forward simple stuff and these barras are woken up my one still has a heap more in it but for now its a mint sleeper and looks like a grandads car. Its a bloody shame Ford dropped the falcon.

I think the FGX update was a great way to finish off this amazing line of vehicles and am so sad it sold so poorly. The front end was a great reflection of the global Ford look of the time, and the tail light treatment was amazing!!

I've owned a 2014 F6 manual for nearly 10 years, 130,000km, and it's been pretty faultless. Diff bushes have been the only really issue but after 2 replacements I just put the IMS diff hat on and it's solid since. I've modified it slowly over the years for a good balance of power, handling, braking, and reliability. Surprisingly capable on the track - got a fair few vids on my channel for anyone interested. Burns no oil, leaks nothing, looks mean, goes hard. It's the perfect car.

I drove an FG taxi for many years. It started life as a Police Car before becoming a cab. For that it was fitted with an LP gas system. .When it was retired from Cab duites, with 740,000 Kms up and a replacement transmission and diff , it went on to a life as a private car. It's still on the road, with over 900,000 kms up and it still has the original engine. One item that most Taxi owners fitted to Falcons, irrespective of the model, was an aftermarket transmission cooler. It ensured extended life of the transmission, and by passed the factory cooler, which ran through the bottom radiator tank. A known weakness when the pipe going through the bottom tank would get a hole in it from electrolysis.
@UnimpressedAussie
@UnimpressedAussie 5 ай бұрын
FGs werent cooled in the radiator, there was a heat exchanger bolted to the outside of the transmission... that could fail internally and milkshake the gearbox.

The FG was the missed opportunity from Ford Australia, the local market got sick of the taxi feel of these cars. In saying that you got a good car for what you paid for just don’t expect European quality. These are a good solid car and cheap to fix and mod but personally I would not pay $25k plus for one 10 years old. Great video again guys! ❤

I'd love one. Just a couple months ago, I saw a Holden R8 Maloo here in North America and I really want to know how the hell that guy got around our 25 year import law. I'd probably buy the Ford Falcon cause Ford quit selling those here back in the 70s for some unknowable reason... We have lots of cars with LS engines like the Holden but we never got that Barra and it's a bloody shame. I thought I was going crazy when I saw that Maloo cause I'd never seen a genuine Aussie RHD Holden before. We got a few cars here like the Pontiac G8 and Chevy SS that were Commodores technically... But a real Aussie Ute, that's something special, I had to take a picture.

Overall mate a good review. Some things though to note. These cars are structural bulletproof as a chassis and very stable in corners and steer very very well for a car of its size. It's true what journo's many years ago said when they reviewed the xr6 turbo, the turn in and hold in and around corners feels like a lighter and smaller car. It isn't a WRX but you can still go quick around corners and hold it well. Just don't be thinking of track handling. The seats are good. They aren't super tight and feel more like lounge chairs with support. You never roll out of them. The xr6 turbo is the best of both worlds in that it is a true cruiser but you can go tight around corners on a highway if you choose or beat everyone in a straight line. Just have to look at the nose of the car so you don't oversteer in tight cornering If you get these cars out from their rear, they are a handful just due to their weight so recommend someone does a drift/RWD course if you choose to buy one of these vehicles. I'd say buy modified that has been done right. These cars are old so just replace stuff on your own. Easy to work on just big in size. I've replaced front and rear control arms, shocks, water pump, front crankshaft seal, serpentine belt and tensioner, rear tyres, bonnet struts and rear boot struts, expansion tank, radiator hoses (all genuine), crankshaft pulley and all fluids. Plus some interior bits that were broken and missing (glove box, glove box light and bracket) and valve cover resprayed. All installation (except tyres) done by me, home mechanic. If I did this on Japanese or European, parts alone would cost about $10K, on this it cost $3.7K in total for parts that will last the life of this car and its easy enough to install myself. THESE CARS RUST. RUST THAT YOU CAN'T SEE. Under the front guards along the weld seams at the chassis, rust can appear unfortunately. You can pull these guards off and respray to prevent further rust. Nothing you can really do, its the metal Ford used when they welded these cars together. Are they a great car? Yes. Are they fun to drive. OH YEAH. G6E Turbo doesn't come with Limited Slip Diff (a must for turbo falcons) RIDE: FG XR6 Turbo + 400rwkw @220,000kms, 6 speed auto. Std Brake setup. New parts and it drives so good. A few noises (interior) but nothing to be worried.

Now we’ve just become a nation of SUV’s and Ute’s, such a borefest, I miss the 90s and early 2000s when these ruled the streets and rivalry was healthy between both companies. I’ve always wondered how these will go lined up against a Kia Stinger GT, since I own one.

I've owned an XR50 edition from new (2010) and so far the only things that have failed is an a/c mixer rod ( a big job to rectify since the whole dash has to come out) and some sagging hood lining. Niggling problems considering the age. I drove it up to Katherine from Perth for a six month work contract up there and it coped faultlessly with the horrid wet season conditions. 4cyl Falcons? Any left? Junk. Yet the 6/V8 FG is a top vehicle. Strong tough and reliable. Comfortable and practical and has a real suspension unlike the Bogandore with pogo sticks and a swing axle In the end they drove half ok but still poor. The Ford has a torquey smooth engine that is near bulletproof, not the harsh torquless asthmatic Saab POS. Fact Holden did not make a car after 1980. Just recycled Euro crap. Improved maybe but Euro crap still.

Too many Turbo Falcons have been modified from factory specs but if you want a turbo Falcon then steer clear of the further modified turbo Falcons with cars producing 600-1000hp because you don't know who did the work and how qualified they are. You also have no idea how the car has been driven since being highly modified but you can guess that it's been thrashed to within an inch of it's life and it now near to being stuffed which is why it's up for sale. If the owner says they did the work themselves then you only have one word to say to them..........Goodbye. Years ago having a chat to a cop near to Singleton NSW I asked him what he preferred to drive the V8 SS Commodore or the XR6 Turbo Falcon. He said that the Commodore had more room inside but if he had to chase someone down then the XR6 Turbo was the car to have. He said even AMG Mercedes and Subaru WRX STi's couldn't outrun the Falcon. There is one thing to remember that the owners of these cars trying get away aren't professional drivers and whilst those cars have the ability to outrun the turbo Falcon, their owners aren't competent enough in driving on the absolute limit to achieve it.

This is my car! Glad you enjoyed reviewing it. Unfortunately there will always be haters for any car judging by some of the comments. I've owned more than 15 performance cars of all makes and models over the past 10 years, including Chrysler, Holden, Ford, BMW and Lexus. So I think I'm pretty qualified to have an informed opinion. None of the others have ever put a smile on my face like this XR6 Turbo does. It was in properly rough shape when I bought it as it had been hardly maintained since leaving the police force. The clear coat on one half of the car was completely gone and the interior was falling to pieces. I've been fixing it up bit by bit - retrimming all the seats and roof liner, fixing the steering wheel, welding some cracked seat rails, replacing diff bushes, ceramic coating, new rotors etc. It's getting there and I'm proud of how it's coming along! The aftermarket head unit seems to be a sticking point and a lot of people don't like the look of that Aerpro one. Personally I've tried both Kayhan and Aerpro. They both look crap compared to factory, but I've had terrible experiences with Kayhan products in the past. This Aerpro unit has served me well. This car has been the most reliable, trustworthy and practical car I've ever owned. Plenty of power, great looks, no major mechanical issues. It's a bloody crying shame Ford was starved of cash by the end because this platform would have been an absolute weapon if they had more funding to luxe it up a bit. As it stands, the driving experience is so involving and immersive, the transmission is smooth like butter, the balance is perfect. Only other thing I'd say is that yes, the position of the drivers seat certainly isn't for everyone. Personally I've gotten accustomed to it and now find it really comfortable. EDIT: oh and the fuel economy! I promise it's not that bad in average real world conditions. I take this car to work most days and unfortunately I have to sit in a lot of a stop start traffic which really hurts fuel bill. Plus I've got a heavy foot.

My dad had a Territory of this generation with the NA Barra 24v in South Africa, it was awesome. The only thing that caused issue was the front suspension. I much prefer this generation of tech - I cannot stand touch screens or ADAS, analogue is so much more better than all the current technological crap. The Barra is a legend too. I feel that new cars are far too disconnected and numb with zero appeal. The analogue feel of older cars is always going to appeal more.. great video.

I think it's awful manufacturers are moving away from physical buttons for things like climate control for a big touch screen thing. And it's not for convenience, it's clearly a cost-cutting measure. What happens when these screens go belly up.

Love the review guys and all without using “agricultural” to describe the falcon at any stage. I have the Turbo Barra in my 09 SY2 Territory. I get an average 15-16l/100kns. Great power 7 seats, xr6 leather interior and the 3rd owner now for 7 years and now approaching 260k. By far the most practical car, fun to drive, reliable and without having to be precious about it. Heres a hot tip Jim, The XRT's have a fine mesh filter in the turbo oil line near the engine block. This filter is supposed to be removed in the first service and it there to catch finings and silica from the engine casting process. Ford are SUPPOSED to remove this filter, but almost never do. This is a common blockage point and cause of oil starvation. I took mine (06/06 BF Mk1.5) out at 115k KMs, and when I said goodbye to her at 180k KMs with a lazy 250kw atw, the turbo was in pristine knick.

Amazing if you mention you own an FG then the first thing people say is "is it a turbo" and when you say no they say "Oh you have to have a turbo" and I ask why but other than performance they can't answer. Where I do my most of my driving koalas and roos aren't impressed by a turbo car. So the NA Barra in the FG only has 261hp - 288lbs ft Torque so not bad for a non turbo car plus you have a choice of fuels E10, 91, 95 and 98. But with the turbo 98 and at a push 95 but not the other two.

I came across your "ReDriven "channel by a random search, and I am glad I did.... What a fantastic video, absolutely love it. The review was spot on. ... I have owned 3 FG's, firstly a 2009 FG G6E N/A, then a 2010 FG G6E TURBO, and now I drive a FG MK2 G6E N/A. Anyone who has driven these cars are well aware that the 4 litre Barra matched to the German ZF 6 speed is a match made in heaven. In fact if you do a search for the most reliable 6 cylinders in the world, you will find the Barra in this list. There has to be something said for the excellent torque characteristics of the Barra. Such a silky smooth drive. For those people who aren't aware, using premium fuel in the naturally aspirated FG with the Barra will increase your power and torque. Figures from Ford Australia indicate: 91 RON is 195 kW and 391 Nm 95 RON is 201kW and 409 Nm 98 RON is 208kW and 420 Nm Not too shabby for an Australian designed and built Engine.

Gotta disagree about the styling, Holdens look like they're trying too hard with all those non-functional ducts and stupid spoilers - the Fords at least have a bit of dignity about them. The seats in B series are way better even though they look similar. I love the seats in the B series but I can't get comfy in an FG either. That Aerpro stereo facia might give you more functionality but jeez it's ugly... Overall though, you're exactly right. They were a fabulous thing and it's really desperately sad that we don't make anything like that anymore.

I have to disagree with you on the styling. Except for the Senator, you are right about too many spoilers but the Holden's styling was very good. There were not too many fake vents and the wing was quite small if you didn't option the large version. Ford's styling went down hill from AU onwards. I find the BA, BF and FG boring and they are definitely are sleeper. But each to their own.

In 2018, after "suffering" Japanese/Thai built utes, including 3 hiluxes, 4x2, 2.2 diesel, v6 single cab 4x4, 3.0 diesel DC then DMAX DC 4X4 and Triton 4x2 petrol for close to 30 years I bought an FG2 ute with steel tray. I bloody loved that thing. Unlike my previous utes it was powerful, handled, had great brakes, very comfortable (sorry mate, my FG had much more comfortable seats than our RAV4 eg) totally reliable had a reasonable amount of tech and could carry a decent amount of gear or load with little effect on performance. I sadly had to sell recently due to too many cars and not enough money😢. It's also so sad that Ford thought so little of its Australian arm that they allowed it to wither on the vine with little to no real investment or marketing since 2009. Oh and the Barra has to be the world's most underrated I6!

I pains me that Ford never brought the excellent Barra engine back to the US (it was originally based on the 3rd gen small block inline six Ford that started way back in the 60s as base economy engines). My favorite slow vehicle I ever owned was my 88 F150- 5 speed 300 6 2wd. The 300 6 was an absolute joy to drive even though slow. So smooth and just a waft of effortless torque. On that note- why didn't Ford bring the Aussie Falcon to the US market? Looks like they considered the idea back in 07 and 09 to replace the US panther car. But.. the issue was fleets (cops, taxis). They loved the Panther Crown Vic because they knew it inside ad out, it was extremely durable, and some even had frame straighteners so they could properly fix almost any curb shunt. Any change was an issue- those fleet sales were probably what kept the Falcon going for so long in OZ too. Fleets do care about fuel consumption, but they care more about Total Cost to Own. A car that last a very long time and doesn't have much downtime for repairs can offset higher fuel consumption easily. *Wish the Falcon was sold in some LHD country so I could import one. I can't drive RHD here.. just can't do it. JDM is dead. Lol.

Great video. My Falcon has all the bodywork and interior issue you bring up. Those are the weak spots. The mechanical bits are bombproof and can take a lot of punishment. The biggest problem by far for me is, as you mention, the lack of comfort. It is really disappointing for this type of car. My first Falcon was an EL sedan and that was the most comfortable car I have ever driven. The later Falcons dropped the ball for comfort imo. I still love my car though and Falcons in general as they are just honest, tough cars that just go on and on and are surprisingly easy and cheap to fix.

Thanks for the vid guys. Love the big barra turbos. I had a BF XR6 Turbo from new, followed by an FG G6E Turbo, which I put 200,000km on before selling last year. The ONLY thing that let down the FG and forced me to sell it in the end, was the farking air con. It starting going haywire when the car was 4 years old, and drove me nuts for the next five years. I had a new HVAC unit ($1200 part!) installed twice, and rebuilt once. When the tell-tale ticking sounds started up again, I decided it was time for us to part ways. Other than the air con, the FG put a smile on my face every time I drove it. The surge of torque from 1200rpm is phenomenal. Long live the mighty barra! PS: If Ford was still making the Falcon I would have bought another new one. I love sedans, and opted for a Lexus IS350 F Sport.

Two main problems. Bad brakes and an aftermarket brake setup helps a lot. Main problem is that the gearbox cooler sits in the radiator. They wear through then puts coolant into the gearbox. Best thing to do is to put an external gearbox intercooler on.
@UnimpressedAussie
@UnimpressedAussie 5 ай бұрын
negative... the gearbox cooler is attached to the gearbox and both ATF and coolant flows through it. this is to keep the gearbox fluid at the right temp. Unfortunately this cooler can crack internally just like the ones that were in the radiator on earlier falcons with the BTR 4 speed.

@@UnimpressedAussie I had the external cooler fitted, which meant no ingress of coolant into the gearbox if cracked. Had it done by a specialist gearbox shop. Never had a problem with it and it is a known weekness that has cost plenty of gearboxes if left stock.
