This car is my dream daily and I was finally able to purchase my 2016 SHO in December. I must say, every day I’m just as excited to drive it as the day I brought it home. Everything one could want in a sleeper wrapped up into one beautiful package. Nice work on this review! 👌🏻
@BlueOvals24 Жыл бұрын
It's a great car, had a '14 a while back and it was a blast. That said, I feel like the '20 Outback XT I have now is the ultimate sleeper. Can pull the same 0-60 as the SHO, but also has more cargo space and can go offroad. Plus it just really surprises people when they see a crossover/wagon accelerate faster than an Ecoboost Mustang.
@nativeoutdoors1780 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueOvals24ain't the subaru a whole second slower 0 to 60? Like 6 second verse 5 seconds in the taurus? It is surprising though when it's a larger crossover with a flat 4 and the taurus is smaller but weighs more but also have a twin turbo v6 with a whole liter more displacement
@BlueOvals24 Жыл бұрын
@@nativeoutdoors1780 I think that's the 3.6R you're thinking about. People have gotten the FA24 models in the 5's. Really need ideal conditions and maybe a higher octane tune, but it's been done. The big kicker is the turbo lag. The twin turbos in the Taurus make turbo lag almost nonexistent. But with the Outback, you spend a good second waiting for that turbo to spool. No doubt it would be in the lower 5 seconds with some anti lag device. Would also help if they used a traditional auto with dual clutches rather than a CVT. I just like it because it's basically the WRX hatch we're being denied, just a bit heavier and no manual option. Not gonna lie though, if I had the money I would've gone for the Explorer ST, those things are crazy quick!
@nativeoutdoors1780 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueOvals24 those things look sweet too, looks like a police officer so at night people gonna behave around you too haha Yeah I can see the single turbo being that way, turbo lag is fun though, nothing and then just space ship rockets you to the moon haha Id love a wrx wagon in the manual, like the 2007 model year ones are beautiful but rare to find unmolested with silly tunes and mods.

Finally!! Someone puts out a good review of this sleeper. I drive a 15 Lincoln MKS Ecoboost which is the SHO in a "fancy" suit. I've been in a NA Taurus and can say that the Lincoln seems to ride just smidge better than its blue oval counterpart. Lincoln discontinued the MKS after the '16 model year unfortunately. Poor sales, lack of brand awareness, etc. The upside is if you can find an Ecoboost MKS they tend to go cheaper than the SHO. Livernois offers tune packages for the SHO (and MKS) to boost the 3.5L to 400+HP. Both cars can give the Audi A8s (of the time) a good run for their money. Its a real shame that Ford discontinued the Taurus platform altogether. Frankly, I think if the interior got a redesign/ new infotainment system to match modern cars, they would do really well. P.S. the camera doesn't do a good job at showing you how MASSIVE the trunk space is. Yes if you have a lot of "cleaning up" you can store most of them in the trunk. 😉
@Trades46 Жыл бұрын
The sad part is this gen Taurus is the use of space was pretty bad - for a large sedan, the interior room was far smaller than Charger & Impala; in fact, not significantly bigger than the Fusion it sold beside. The SHO 3.5 Ecoboost twin turbo is pretty cool, but the same engine in the Explorer already is infamous for its water pump issue. With the same money, the Fusion Sport with the 2.7 Ecoboost is probably the sportier car for less money.

My old man had a 2012 SHO in red. It was great. Though it wasn’t sync3, I think I prefer its interior to the facelift: the suede inserts in leather seats were sportier, the analog tach, and buttons instead of the haptics for the climate. He replaced it with a Lincoln continental he still drives today, with the 400hp EB. I think that is FoMoCo’s final, peak sedan. The badge is less of a sleeper, but no one expects the power

The sony sound system in fords from this era is killer! The noise isolation is so incredible in these cars that if you talk too loud you'll hurt your own ears
@martinmcintyre7623 Жыл бұрын
Yes. My Apple Watch gives me the 'yellow ear" warning me of a loud environment when I play music. 200 watts was the thing in the 80's when I was in high school and my SHO(which likely over doubles that) cranks the tunes hard without distortion.
@martinmcintyre7623 Жыл бұрын
I own a 2014 Taurus SHO with exactly the same options as this car, including color and wheels (2016 offered the much better SYNC3 infotainment system) and I am very happy with this car. I bought it with 22k miles in 2017 and currently have 90k miles. It drives like it did when I bought it, and has been well maintained ever since. You will have to do Ford required services to keep it fresh, but these are nothing in comparison to a German sports sedan. Even though this car has "Ecoboost" on the trunk, it is not an MPG leader by any measure (a tune may help, and improve HP and torque). The 3.5TT engine was designed to meet or exceed V8 power and torque while getting slightly better fuel economy. It's more about smiles per gallon versus miles per gallon, and this car delivers the smiles. Get on the throttle and this car will get out of its own way very quickly, and probably beat a Challenger 5.7 Hemi in the process. And it will do really well in the snow, unlike said Challenger. I am currently having body repair on mine and have a 2022 Toyota Corolla as a rental, and I will tell you that driving the rental is like drinking a Coors Light versus a good craft IPA. And the road noise is so bad that you have to practically shout to talk to passengers. Neutered at birth. Please take a hard look at this car on Cars and Bids; it is a true cream puff with ultra low mileage. Interior trimmings are not a sea of hard black plastic like most cars these days; most everything you touch is soft and nice. This is pretty much (mechanically) the same as a Taurus Police Interceptor and our law enforcement beats the crap out of these things, and they come back swinging. Give this car a bid and enjoy the last performance sedan that Ford ever made.
@nativeoutdoors1780 Жыл бұрын
What mpg do you see with the sho? I want one as a more fuel efficient transportation, my trucks only get 8 to 10 city and maybe 13 14 highway going 65 so it doesn't take much to beat those numbers but I want something getting closer to mid 20s or higher
@martinmcintyre7623 Жыл бұрын
Well friend, you are NOT going to get close to the mid 20's in a SHO. I might get 20mpg in my car during mostly freeway driving. Since I posted this comment, like right afterwards, I threw an engine code in this car and will likely be replacing a timing chain (and probably other things). Not a cheap repair by any measure. And not really rare for a car with variable valve timing and nearing 100k miles. It still drives perfectly. But she is still my baby and I plan on keeping her. And hopefully get at least another 90k.@@nativeoutdoors1780

I have had my fully loaded 2013 Taurus SHO Performance Package for a year now and it feels like I've had it for so much longer. The car feels like home, bought it for 10k, and while it has given me a couple issues that were easily addressed, it is my favorite car I have ever owned. It is sitting at 151,000 miles and I have changed every fluid except the rear differential fluid. The interior has the suede inserts, and looks to be in identical if not newer condition than the SHO in this video. I love the feeling of effortless power on demand with these sedans and the tuning aftermarket is massive, but for anyone looking to purchase one high mileage or not, make sure that you are at least a little handy with working on vehicles yourself. I have worked as an interior detailer and a mechanic in my life so keeping up the SHO has been relatively easy. Other than fluids, I have changed its tires, rear wheel bearings, brake pads and rotors, puddle lights, and tightening and cleaning of other trim pieces. Looking to get a gearhead tune down the line to really spice it up. Lastly, if you're looking for high mileage SHOs, make 100% sure that they are performance package equipped. The secondary oil cooler, transmission cooler, and PTU cooler actually work unlike what some forum-goers say. When I changed my ptu fluid it wasn't in nearly as bad condition as I was expecting.
@tharris7919 Жыл бұрын
It's crazy that the current Ford Edge still uses that gauge cluster.
@ErrorsAndComputers Жыл бұрын
My '14 was a ton of fun. Grab a Gearhead tune for $700 and you'll wake it up quick. Great cars until the chain driven water pump dies, sometimes suddenly and without warning. The other big issue is the PTU (transfer case) which was initially advertised by Ford as lubed-for-life before they found out that its close proximity to the exhaust manifold was cooking the gear oil and causing it to pressure vent out of the top; this would leave the PTU with no oil and metal on metal contact until it eventually had a catastrophic failure. If in the market for one, try to find one with the factory Performance Pack which has sportier steering calibration, revised shock absorbers, engine cooling shared with the Police Interceptor, 3.16:1 gearing, and an external cooler for the PTU.

I’m thinking of buying a 2019 SHO, watching this review of a 2016 makes me think the 2019 will be even better! I had a 2011 Taurus limited for a long time. Looking to get back into it. Great reliable car if you take care of it.

Where would be the best places to look for one??

Had one for a couple years. Sadly it was a '14 with the terrible older version of Sync. Also had one of the turbos break on me. Moved on to a different sleeper, '20 Outback XT. It falls into the same 5 1/2-6 second 0-60 range, while also having more ground clearance and can go offroad a bit. Still miss the SHO when I occasionally see one out on the road.

Best thing about the Taurus was the hidden trunk button above the license plate!

Dude, you're like literally in my area lol, just came across this video. I also have the 3.5 Ecoboost but you forgot to mention my "car" in the other cars this motor is in, which is the Flex. Also I've done quiet a bit of work to it since you had mentioned the tune part, which mine is. If you ever wanna make a POV video of it, lemme know! I know it's basically the same as yours there, just the way it pulls a 5000 pound bus gets intoxicating and of course the kids love it lol

Always loved these and the sleeper sedan concept as a whole. It's one of the reasons I love my Sonata N-Line. Slapped a tune and a few parts on it and it's hilariously fun to drive.

Friend of mine has one of these and when I had my 2012 Infiniti M56X, he couldn't keep up. You'll see these on the road often, but you will never see another Infiniti M56 or even a Q70 with the 5.6 V8.

It should be able to keep up...

I have an M35..The M56 for the next generation is definitely a sleeper. Most people don't even know it exists.

Would love to see you drive a gen 1 or gen 2 honda fit thats manual! Such a crazy fun and economical car! Making a comeback with gas prices. Reminds me a lot of what the civic used to be.

These are cool almost got one but ended up going with the Lincoln MKS figured it's even more of a sleeper plus I like the luxury including the THX Speakers. Did a Livernois Stage 4X tune on mine with Catless DP and Catless exhaust and a Linvenois windstorm intake (just for the noise I know they basically do nothing for power). But the thing can now do 0-60 in 4-4.3 with a boosted launch and 4.5-4.8 just punching it. Not bad for a 4300lbs 4-door with plenty of luxury.
