Can the 2016 GMC Canyon Duramax Diesel get better than 29 mpg hwy? I take up the task and drive from Austin to Dallas before the store closes at 7pm. Do I make it in time? The diesel 2016 GMC Canyon is the little brother of the Sierra Denali and has a 2.8 liter 4-cylinder 181 hp 369 lb-ft power output capable of towing up to 7,700 Lbs (7,600 limit on 4wd models). I review the details of this truck and assess it's performance during a nail-biting road trip!

I have a 2016 Colorado Duramax Midnight Edition. I traded in a mint G37 in for it. It's been awhile since I owned a truck and all I can say is wow. It drives great, looks great, love everything about it. My last truck was a '77 GMC half ton with a bench seat and a 3 on the tree - trucks have come along way. Digging this truck a lot, especially with the diesel.

Great review. I've been looking all over for Colorado/Canyon reviews and seemingly couldn't find a half descent one. Most were 5 minute videos with highlights but I was looking for something more like this. Keep it up.

Interesting to see the comparisons. I'd agree with a lot of your points. You made me notice a few things that I hadn't. So far Imy best MPG is at 41.0 mpg over a 25 mile trip. getting mid 30s on the long trips.

This is the review that I have been trying to find for some time already. My daily commute consists of 50 miles worth of travel to work, including a mile worth of travel on gravel. My current daily truck is a 15' HD Denali. Feathering it gives me 22-23 mpgs, 16/18 if I am rushing. (By the pump and it's literally all highway) I have been looking at this particular vehicle for some time but as mentioned on the comment section, other reviews just give the highlights and such. Currently, I am in the market for a canyon/Colorado with the Dmax, just for the commute to work just for the mileage and for small loads. (I do utilize my HD's capabilities but occasionally) ..This has now sweetened the deal for me. Thank you!

I can tell you were tempted to drive down that creek! Very nice truck, I would much rather have a mid size truck than a full size one here in Southern California.

I drove one of these and thought that it wasn't too easy for me to get in and out off. Part of that had to do with how low the seats are too the floor and how narrow the space between steering wheel and the seat is. I'm 6'3" 300 lbs so I need my space. I also felt the cab to be too small when comparing it to my 2012 TDI Passat, which will be bought back by VW. I love my VW but it's 5yo with 90k on it so with money VW says they will give its hard not to take that deal. I want to stay with diesel if I can and have checking out some Audis with the 3.0 TDI but this truck did pop up on my searches so I had to check it out. Great review! I do love the tech GMC offers in this truck.

Diesel review I wonder if you could help me out. I'm on the market for a mid size truck to use for my Roofing company. This is for running estimates and small repairs. So while it is not a heavy duty work Truck, I will need to carry a ladder and I'm getting a removable rack so I can take it off on the weekends. I have a 21' boat that I trailer maybe one or twice a year. My main concern is fuel milage. I have an f150 with the old 5.4 and it's like 13mpg. So I'm looking at the 2016 toyota tacoma and the canyon diesel or regular gas motor. My question is..for the money, which would you buy? I really like the diesel but it's definitely high priced. Although probably only a few thousand less than the tacoma with options I want. I'd appreciate any thoughts man. Love the video!

+dominionn09 While I have not towed anything with a press vehicle, (and have not driven the Ram EcoDiesel yet) the mid-size GM Canyon/Colorado Duramax is pricey but it does perform. I have driven both and I prefer the short bed. I have not been in a Tacoma lately but I have owned a Toyota truck back in the day. The difference between the Tacoma and Canyon/Colorado is going to be diesel. The second difference is build quality. Third difference is comfort. The trailer brake and exhaust brake comes with GM Duramax trucks, so that's something to consider for precious cargo.
@dominionn09
@dominionn09 8 жыл бұрын
+Diesel Review ok so quality goes to who in you're opinion? Also would a Tacoma 4*4 shirt bed by an adequate tower? Again not really my criteria more concerned with mpg
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 жыл бұрын
+dominionn09 If mpg performance is your primary choice, then nothing beats diesel. Your only option would be GM Canyon or Colorado in mid-size.

Hey +Diesel Review , in this video you say that you're not a fan of the canyon's interior, but in your colorado road trip video you seem to like it a lot... I thought the canyon's interior was supposed to be better... isn't it??... thanks
@DieselDrives

Well, the GMC has red accent and instrument lighting at night whereas the Chevrolet has aqua lighting. In addition to that, the seats had different upholstery, with it being noted that there were red highlights in the GMC. The Chevrolet was more subtle. Also, the GMC had a shiny, reflective paint on the plastic door grabs which I didn't care for. Otherwise, the interiors are nearly identical. The exterior differences are beyond subtle between the two.

Great video. I wonder how your truck would do with one of those tuner kits from DuramaxTuner.
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 жыл бұрын
+Kris Rehberg Thanks for watching! I don't think it needs a tuner kit to get more efficiency. Driving style affects efficiency. If you're considering power, this engine output is on car with 2.1L offerings from Mercedes and BMW diesels.

Duramaxtuner is claiming +45 hp and +60 ft/pds over stock, gets you into 6th gear more readily and better fuel economy. I think that 230hp/430 ft-pds is ideal for the size of vehicle and will make it a sweet ride! The stock performance is pretty sluggish off the start.
@TheSilver9r
@TheSilver9r 7 жыл бұрын
They claim it has no effect on the warranty as there is physical change to the truck.

5:48 You hit the nail on the coffin! These mid-sized trucks ie Taco and Colo you have this premium price that you have to pay over buying a regular sized truck ie Tundra, Silvarado, 1500, Titan ect and you can get well 2 of those truck in diesel form for that same price Ie 1500 Eco diesel and Titan Xd that can perform well better than the smaller counterpart its almost pointless to buy "in a financial aspect" a mid sized truck.
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 жыл бұрын
+zech007 Thanks for watching! The only real benefit to a "smaller" truck like this is more practicality from a daily driver standpoint, since it is easier to find a parking space it can actually fit in. I think Tacoma owners who want 29+ mpg hwy might see the Canyon diesel as their only option. But price points on trucks and SUVs are moot since it all appears to be a matter of emotional purchasing decisions these days (especially when most leases are all the same monthly payment). I look at it from a purchasing power and leverage standpoint.

+Diesel Review That's what killed the S10 and the Colorado before . Why buy a Colorado when I can get a Silverado fot the same price .
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 жыл бұрын
+shoover17331 There's a certain need that the Colorado and Canyon models fill. It comes down to daily use, range, and practicality. For instance, Baseball coaches drive Tacomas. Something tells me they'll be thinking they could use a Colorado or Canyon diesel for travel ball. After all, the money saved on fuel goes toward more beer and Yeti coolers, if not better hotels. That's a proposition the Silverado would squash quickly.

+Diesel Review Your right I'd like to have one. I have a 2,000 # boat and It takes me about 3 hours to get to the ocean. I get 10mpg with my Silverado with the 4.8 liter. Sure would be nice to get 17mpg or better . I enjoyed your review but I was a little disappointed you didn't show what kind of grill you bought. I did ride the whole way their with you. LOL. I'm into bbq also.
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 жыл бұрын
+shoover17331 I bought a Turbo 3 from BBQ Galore. They have doubled in price over the past 12 years and they now include all the upgrades. It set me back $1,500 but it's a bargain if you ask me (I also received 10% off because I'm a previous Turbo 3 owner - it's like grill loyalty at a car dealership). The grill setup is very similar to a $5,000 Lynx. I didn't want to brag on video about my new purchase like a typical douche, but I'm grilling on it almost daily now. There are fewer dishes to clean as well. The Turbo grills are now only available in two grades of stainless whereas my original Turbo 3 was porcelain.

+David cordukes It's capable of towing 7,600+ lbs, so the power isn't the problem. It's really an issue in the passing situation. Thrust isn't as strong as I expected from 369 lb-ft of torque. It's not bad, but it isn't fun. It's just okay.

+Diesel Review I believe -assuming acquisition cost is no object- that this is the ultimate truck for cross-section appeal particularly with the diesel motor and properly tuned. All-in should cost around 45k and is best for a long term ownership situation. Considering higher resale, longer engine life, and lower annual fuel cost, it's a better value than the Ram Eco diesel, and certainly over the Sierra/Silverado 2500 diesel. Even chipped, driving in the cold, going downhill unloaded, those others will never catch 30 mpg. If they could shoehorn the tacoma's interior and sunroof into the Colorado/ Canyon diesel, and do the duramax tune in it, it's the perfect everyday truck for 70-80% of the truck buying public. Again, assuming up front cost is no object.
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 жыл бұрын
+apostle999 Yup. It isn't directly competing with the Tacoma, but it is looking like a competitive choice. The success will be determined by aftermarket options.

+Diesel Review Toyota still uses dinosaur rear drum brakes, a C-channel frame and a plastic bed, not to mention nowhere close to GM's warranty, non-standard equipment, and....no diesel option unlike the rest of the world. Domestic trucks are the best there is; Toyota is a wannabe.
