That was great. I think that was a very good matchup. Smaller diesel pulling the same load as a full size V8 gas. Excellent. Looking forward to the Ram Ecodiesel video as well. Also, if possible, it would be great to see you guys make a video showing a complete 100,000 mile cost breakdown between something like the Ram 1500 V6, Hemi and Ecodiesel. Or a Ford or GM. Recently I put pen to paper (between the Ram 1500 ED and the Ford F150 2.7 EB. As well as the cost difference between the Ram ED and the Pentastar V6) and was astonished with the results when comparing cost of purchase, cost of ownership/maintenance and MPG over 100k. Obviously everyone's needs/desires are different, but the results are pretty impressive. Keep up the great work guys. Love your videos.

+tsnorquist There is no problem with that. If you don't want to pay that much, you can still buy the XL for $26,500~. Also, they still pack on incentives like crazy.

***** In the case of the Canyon/Colorado there are some significant production constraints and the dealers have a set limit of trucks they can order. They are not going to give up the truck that makes $1,500 profit to order one that they might make $500 on.

Pretty amazing that such weights are manageable by a midsize pickup, albeit not very confidently. My take away from this video is that for the kinds of things a lot of people tow (cargo or yard trailers, non yacht type boats), the Diesel Canyon/Colorado gets the job done with good economy and for the 80% of the time you aren't towing it's WAY better economy and good performance. If you spend a genuinely huge amount of time towing or tow something genuinely huge, neither a mid-size nor a half ton is probably the best choice for the job.

@1mlb704
@1mlb704 8 жыл бұрын
+Nathan McDonald yeah it's still heavier it's a full size truck versus a mid size truck, but there's only a 320 pound difference which, considering the size difference, isn't very much. At 9:27 the presenters were shocked about how closely they weighed despite the Canyon being smaller. This comment was aimed towards their confusion. The aluminum makes a huge difference in weight, hence why many sports cars use aluminum parts as opposed to steel

I'd like an impression of the towing experience. When you did the Tacoma, I didn't hear any comments, but that engine was turning 5K most during most of your towing shots. Man, that gets tiring after a while. I think that's a big advantage diesels have beyond their economy and grunt, they tow at much lower RPM. I'm not as concerned at the total level of sound pressure as I am about how each truck feels audibly when towing. I hated the vehicle, but loved that my 2000 Jetta TDI never needed to be shifted out of 5th at highway speed. You just gave it more throttle and it responded. It was a very pleasant from that perspective.

Nice showing for the minimax diesel. Handy truck, easier to drive daily and yet it can tow a decent load. Sounds perfect for my needs, which would be only occasionally towing a 5,000 pound RV travel trailer. Don't forget it gets substantially better MPG when not towing than the bigger truck does too. Nice job GM. Come on Ford, bring your cool diesel Ranger sold everywhere else in the world to the US.

The engine in the Canyon is basically the same engine that was in the 2005 U.S. version of the Jeep Liberty CRD. I owned two of those. One was stock, the second one I got tuned by Green Diesel Engineering. I averaged 26 MPGs combined cycle, and I averaged 14-16 MPGs while towing several thousand pounds. It wasn't lightning fast, but it had lots of torque for work. Unfortunately it proved to be expensive to work on. A thermostat was $110 for that thing!

I'm so glad to see the 5.0 review! This engine is what will eventually replace my 5.4 when it is time. If they do a 10 speed, turbo 5.0, I'll whip my wallet out so fast that a dealer's head will spin. I just can't do a V6. The Ecoboost engines are impressive, but the tried and true V8 is what gets my blood pumping.

I would like to see a cost analysis for the actual fuel consumption. Fuel MPG is important but also how much the fuel costs can be just has relevant. If one vehicle gets better mileage but the fuel it uses is more expensive your cost may be the same. In a lot of states there is a much wider spread between diesel and gas.
@robgrune3284
@robgrune3284 8 жыл бұрын
The Canyon/Colorado is very impressive. 12mpg towing 5600# at highway speeds is excellent [5600# is a loaded 23ft Airstream]. 1440# payload is very capable. strong frame and suspension, very little squat. quiet and smooth. exhaust braking ! and good price point for the Colorado fitted with essentials [no fluff] at about $36k. GM has a winner here.

@gwot
@gwot 7 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you're saying this because the engine displacement is the closest, but in fact the 5.0 is closer to the 2.8 because the 2.8 is a diesel. When strictly talking about towing and MPG, like in this video, the 2.7 is a complete joke in its own right, let alone putting it up against a diesel 2.8. And because the 5.0 is the tried and true favorite from all the F150 engines, so they're putting the 2.8 up against that.

@light house never said ford is good, and what you're saying is irrelevant to the topic... you're just bashing Ford for no reason.
@gwot
@gwot 5 жыл бұрын
@light house ok, let me be more clear... what I meant was the 5.0 is the "fan favorite", "tried and true" being Ford's best, not implying it's good or better than other manufactures, but Ford's best engine. That's why they're pitting the 5.0 against the canyon 2.8. Again, you're just looking for a irrelevant reason to bash on Ford.

I love that the little Duramax comes with the exhaust brake. Used to drive a lot of Isuzu tilt cabs for work and coming off of the highway with a big load is not fun if the exhaust brake is off. You put 200k/mi on a work truck and think it's going to stop the same with 1000 gal of liquid in the bed, you might learn the hard way. Fleet maintained does not mean shit at that point. Exhaust brakes are important

Good job for comparing the Canyon to the F150. Seriously, the Canyon/Colorado don't compete with the Frontier/Tacoma. They are after the 1/2 tons buyers that uses their trucks for grocery shopping. I think the date are pretty accurate on this : the GM twins are stealing sales from Ford and Ram. I don't think they are overpriced neither. Seriously guys, have you shop for a mid-size ute lately ? Those CRV-Escape-RAV4 will get you easily into the 35 000 $ territory (canadian dollar) and they don't have the capability or the 4wd features of a mid size trucks. My 2 cents :D

Great mashup guys. As for the GMC being better on fuel cost don't forget the $$$ it cost to maintain that truck. DEF $20 a jug every few thousand Miles and oil changes with fuel filters are very costly $$$ The cost of owner ship on the F150 will be cheaper and make up the difference in the fuel economy. As for the size, I ask why build a mid size truck? The weight seams very close but the truck is smaller and less capable. Oh well great video guys keep them coming!

I have a 2014 with the 5.0 and 3.73 gears. It tows OK but you have to keep the RPMs up. No doubt the Ecoboost tows better thanks to having most of it's power much lower in the RPM range. If I towed all the time, I would have gotten the EB. However, my truck with the 5.0 actually gets better MPG running solo than everyone I know with the same truck and EB engine.
