Glad you're back! I was getting worried because it's been months. Your content is always amazing and entertaining. I'm glad you made it out of Colorado alive. Tires make a huge difference. Snow tires are a remarkable technological advancement. I live in New Jersey and having them with two wheel drive cars makes a tremendous difference. Happy new year and I hope to see more videos soon.

Thanks and happy new year to you too! I am from Arizona then Albuquerque, where we really don't have any serious winter weather. I have always just ran PS2's and slid around on the rare occasion there was snow or ice. What tires do you run during the winter?
@jasonmcconnell5412

Rad Fox I started with, I believe the firestone winterforce, excellent performance on snow but when it came to ice it was a whole different story. Whether it was packed snow or slush they were the best. For the past three seasons I ran the Bridgestone blizzak and they perform way better on ice. Good all around but Jersey tends to get more Icey conditions so blizzak is the way to go. Prior, I simply ran all seasons and getting specific tires for winter makes a huge difference and gives you more confidence on the road. I have 2wd cars too. If you have a 1000ft-lb of torque down low in the rpm's and have bad rubber, you are going no where my friend.

Thanks for the info. I have watched a couple of videos on the Blizzak and they look awesome. I am going to seriously consider these for next winter. Have you seen this video with the Golf R's with studded tires on the Sweedish Ice Lake? Or the videos with cars running the Blizzak on the Ice Lake? Looks like a lot of fun!

Rad Fox yes I have. I saw it when it first came out. The new haldex system works very well especially in the snow with snow tires. I went and did some doughnuts in the snow after I watched it!

Yes Summer tires don't work in winter. Glad you guys and the car is ok. Yes My Golf R has Blizzak LM001 winter tires during the 5 months. When temps drop below 45 degree. you can feel the summer tires are bot heating up and no traction.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
Ahh, those Blizzark must be the tires that I saw those R's running in Sweeden. I just found another video on the same track where they explicitly were testing the Blizzark. Those tires are pretty sick. In your opinion how good are they?
@Nirvash24

Blizzak LM tires are the best. LM act like performance summer tire but for winter temps.

I use the Blizzak LM-32 and Michelin X-Ice Xi3 for ice racing. I also pull stuck people out of the snow in my mk6 R in blizzards. They're amazing. The LM32 isn't as good as the WS80 in the worst stuff but it's almost the same, and the LM is much better for the rest of Denver winters

Rad Fox question for you... after putting 20k on my R I'm thinking about an intake. I know you have the APR intake. Have you seen the Arma intake? Any recommendations? Thanks
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
I hadn't seen the Arma, WOW, it is really nice and looks very functional. The only concern I would have, is if there would be room for an oil catch can and if it will connect up properly to the stage 3 turbo that I select. If you don't plan to run a catch can or a different turbo the Arma looks great.

glad to see you back! I read on Vortex that the rubber floor mats can sometimes help with traction when in snow. Not sure if it would have helped in your case, but worth trying if it ever happens again!
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea. However, I only have the cloth ones and I bet it would have destroyed them. Boooo. I am looking at maybe getting some weathertech mats, but not sure if I should get the laser cut or the heavy rubber ones.
@jonb6947
@jonb6947 8 жыл бұрын
Rad Fox I'm sure the laser cut ones would look the best, especially in terms of fitment. I have the monster mats myself, and love them, but don't think they make a set specific for the R :(
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
I had the monster mats in my GTI, they were great. I can't believe they don't make a set of R labeled Monster Mats. I would have already bought some if they did. After this last trip my foot wells were covered in mud and ice. I had to scrub the heck out of the carpet to get all of it out. I really want to cover as much carpet as possible so I think the best bet are going to be the weathertech laser mats.

Good to see that you are back! The People need more R content.... If your R would have had true winter tires, you could have pulled the towing-truck out of a ditch ;-) The winter tire rubber stays flexible, also in freezing temperatures.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
LOL! That would have been awesome to do, pull the tow truck out! I may seriously have to consider two sets of wheels and tires now. We only get a few weeks of snow here in Albuquerque and its usually only a few inches at that. It does usually refreeze multiple times leaving ice in the mornings. What winter tires do you recommend?
@GTI_CHHA
@GTI_CHHA 8 жыл бұрын
I am driving on Continental Winter Contact TS850 tires. They make a world of difference and offer amazing traction (I am running a stage 2 with 510Nm / 320HP dynod at the wheels, of course it will break traction in 1st and 2nd gear, but will hook up 3rd gear onwards). GoodYear also makes some good winter tires. I would recommend to get tires with a relatively low speed index (H or V) as the tire will have much more grip, the W or Y tires are too stiff which defeats the purpose of achieving good traction.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! Who's stage 2 are you running?
@GTI_CHHA
@GTI_CHHA 8 жыл бұрын
I am running a custom stage 2 from a Dutch company called TVS Engineering. They are specialized in VAG DSG tuning and repairs. VW and Audi car dealers all over the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium send their customer cars (with DSG issues) to this place. As you must be aware, your local friendly VW dealer has absolutely zero knowledge about the DSG. If you are lucky - they can change your oil without over- or underfilling it..... Anyway, my car spend 2x 6 hours on the dyno over there. Almost everybody can tune the engine, but to have a nice driveable and superfast GTI (or R) the ECU tuning MUST be tuned together with the DSG software. Only increasing the standard torque limiter as set by VW (at ~430Nm) and increasing the clamping force is not enough...

At least you guys were OK.....and the car too! A good set of winter tires, Nokian Hakka's, makes all the difference. Be safe! :)

Welcome back. Ya, tires and speed were your issue here. Most swear by Blizzack tires. I have the same tires you do. I'll try to keep all season tires on my car when I change these because it's a less expensive option and should be perfect in Maryland. It's not cold enough nor does the snow/ice stay around long enough to "need" winter tires. Money no objetive Blizzack then some really good summer tires are a good bet.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
thanks! Hey watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/m52zkGZqodmXjas it proves that winter tires should be ran for safety when the outside temps are below ~40C. The winter tires stop faster in water, snow, and ice when the temps fall below 40C. How do you like living in Maryland? I like all the green out there but the traffic was pretty dang bad. I am seriously going to consider getting some winter tires, but I think I will end up getting some PS2 or PSS's for this summer first.

My journey, Jamaica-Florida-Maryland. Between Maryland and Florida, its Maryland all day! Miami was... well... sh!t, I mean, not my cup of tea. Traffic there is waaay worse than Maryland. I escaped! The tire comparison is pretty scary. I did the whole, find a parking lot and find the limits thing when i first moved here. Generally now, we take my wifes car if its snowing. My R waits for the roads to be clear.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
Jamaica? Wow! That is good to know about Maryland, in case I ever need/want to move out there. I love all the greenery out there. Its only desert out here and its quite boring. The good thing is there is hardly any rain, just crazy wind, so the car stays pretty clean but the dust, dirt, and rocks on the roads is ridiculous. I have already replaced my windshield 2 times on the R and the next day on the interstate, I got a chip in the latest one.

The dws 06 continental are great all season tires that do quite well in snow for an A/S. But if you are in a northern climate(I'm in WI) you would be well served to run a second set of wheels with snows. My cts awd coupe with blizzaks was ridiculous in snow and ice. I could stomp it from a stop and it would just hook and go. I used to drive a heads/cam c6 corvette through several winters with blizzaks and it was great in the snow. My current daily is a scat pack challenger with Yokohama snows and so far so good.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info and recommendations. It will probably be next winter before I have to make a decision. It really sounds like those blizzaks are awesome, everyone has nothing but great things to say about them. And by the way, nice runs on the corvette and a nice baseline on the challenger. :-)

Rad Fox Rad Fox thank you! The best so far is 11.5@117 but should be doing better. My trap speed didn't change after gaining 90rwhp with heads/cam so I have some sorting out to do. Also very nice golf r. I didn't realize they were making a dsg R when I was car shopping for a great daily or I'd probably have a golf r right now. I love the all around practicality, awd, mpgs and the ability to get a lot more hp from just increasing boost.

Was there a reason you used the Contis in snow? I just got my Golf R and bought winter wheels and tires right away. No snow yet...just super cold here in Chicago (been single digits all last week).
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
I have never ran snow tires on my vehicles here because we hardly get any snow and frankly I had no idea how these tires on this vehicle would perform. When we left for Colorado it was cold but there was no snow. On the way up we hit a big snow storm and the rest is history. Now I know I need to get some winter tires to really be able to appreciate the R in the snow. I have been doing the research and it would appear that once the temperature dips below about 40F, winter tires actually make a significant difference in stopping, even in water.

How come you had to add coolant? Is there a small leak or is it normal?
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think I have any leaks, at least I hope not. It has been a little low for quite some time. If you look back at some of my other videos you will see that it was low. Funny thing is, a fellow youtuber actually recommended i add some coolant several months ago and I didn't. In the videos the car was cooled off and the reservoir was still showing low, when I checked it with the car fully warmed up and running, the coolant was even lower so I decided to add some more back in.
@mqbr22
@mqbr22 8 жыл бұрын
Rad Fox Yup seems about right. Reason I asked was because my mk7 gti also shows a little less then the low mark on the reservoir. Guess i will have to add a lil. Great videos by the way. I think I watched most of them. Wish i got R instead. After the tune I spin even from a 40 mph roll
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for watching. The GTI is still such a great car especially with a tune, it just lacks traction from a dig. I loved shifting into 3rd (6MT) and hitting the gas, it was so quick in 3rd it was awesome. Are you down near sea level, because it sounds like you are putting down more power than I did up here.
@mqbr22

Rad Fox Yea I still like it even tho the no traction gets lil old haha. I'm in Iowa and elevation here in my city is 879 ft so not bad. My car is dsg and 3 gear is by far my favorite gear. I took my car to the track in April and my best time was 13.5 with a 108 mph trap. Bad 60 foot of 2.4. Car has apr 93 octane tune, 20 lbs light weight 18" wheels wrapped in Bf Goodrich g force rivals 225 wide.
@RadFox1320
@RadFox1320 8 жыл бұрын
Damn your car sounds nice. What wheels are you running, are they really exactly 20lbs? I agree the 60ft is killing you. What I want to know is, if running lighter (smaller) wheels will actually improve my 60ft. If you look on the Golf R drag ladder Darlyson2020 hit a 1.5 sec 60 with UM stage2 /DSG UM/ 17enkei rpf1,/tires Nitto NTo . That is ridiculous! I know RPF1's are light but damn. He is the only one that I have seen pull off a 1.5 on this car. Now he has a different turbo, but he did this on the stock turbo. Everyone else only gets 1.7's!!!

Sorry to hear about the glass. I went through Safelite both times on this car and they had to order the glass from the dealer. I hope you have a low glass deductible on your insurance. The first time it cost me almost $750.00. The second time the price had dropped to $375.00 for the glass, plus $175 for labor, and $40 for a kit. FYI. When they installed the window they broke the clips on the rain and camera cover because they didn't know how to take it off. They're ordering me a new one and it should be in this week. Thanks for the support!

How you're allowed to drive on such conditions in 19" summer slicks? You'll be finned anywhere in eu with that (which is logical, you're not risking just yourself luck, but also other's on the road). Next time teach you kid little more of responsibility. Please don't take this as insult, just my 5 cents about it..

Hey no worries, I hear what you are saying. Like I said in the video, i was on a road trip and hit a big snow storm. I had never driven this car on snow before and never had these particular tires before. We do not get much snow here. I have seen some of how strict it is in the EU. I was amazed that in the EU they actually do headlight alignment and tire inspections. WOW! In the U.S. they pretty much let everyone drive anything on the roads. They treat it as a right and not a privilege although they say otherwise. Everyone person has at least one car. The registration process is very easy and in most places the cars are never inspected. There are very few places where they actually do any real inspections. Bald tires, leaking oil, busted windows, blowing smoke, blue headlights, giant rust holes, trucks dropping rocks all over the road, giant lift kits, no exhaust, hydraulics doing three wheels, duct tape holding body panels on, cars full of stolen junk, and no interiors is all normal. I would guess up to 30% of the people in my state do not have auto insurance or a drivers license even though it is required. I assume this is all rare in the EU is that right?
