For most who comment this with little knowledge of off-road testing, this hiilstop is a standard traction test a all testing facilities...I was invited to Michelin test grounds in NC, 4X4 Centre in Vermont and Continental in Uvalde Texas and all of them have the exact same run. Standard tests like this help compare tires and trucks with runs that are of equal difficulties making test results useable for fair comparison.Wranglers,LandRovers,Subarus..etc all go on same tests no matter the subjective opinion of the testers....this makes the exercise a very objective one.

The VTM-4 system in my 2007 Honda Pilot is awesome off-road. I bet this Pilot would be awesome off-road too with a 2” lift, all terrain tires, and sway bar disconnects.

I drove my 1989 Buick Regal down the power lines for miles up hills five times that height, ruts half way up the door, grass, mud, sand, small trees, brush yup ran like a champ and cane out on the road and kept on going. I would love to see these guys really beat the crap out of this thing....

I have to admit, it's not as bad as I thought it would be when I heard they took away some ground clearance. If I was going to take a crossover off road, I'd still rather be in either a Subaru Forester, a Subaru Outback, a Jeep Cherokee or a Jeep Renegade.

He said ten years ago you'd need a jeep type vehicle for that hill? My 1997 Suzuki Sidekick Sport would make it up that as would my old 2001 Volvo XC70. My current 2014 Volvo XC60 T6 wouldn't even blink and its on 20s. I'll be interested to see what it does when you get it to Colorado...

This 2016 Pilot could kill th MDX sales, because Acura's SH-AWD system is also on the new Pilot. Even the top-of-the-line Touring Elite has similar amenities as the MDX. The Pilot might not handle better than the MDX, but it might have similar 0-60 times as the MDX with the Pilot Touring Elite's 9 speed automatic transmission.

+Brijesh Patel (BP) the AWD system used in the pilot is actually sh-awd. Honda just didn't want to call it that. the i-VTM4 has the same torque splits, same hydraulic clutch packs, same 2.7% overdrive, same everything. only differences if the programming, Acura gets more aggressive torque vectoring.

Guys, my 2019 civic never got stuck on a flat loose sandy road, It wasn't even a road, just sand and lots of pebbles. Loose sand btw. SO I'm thinking this would be a Beast when it comes to offroading, except that it doesn't have much of the ground clearance if you're planning to offroading or a dune bashing on the loose sand.

Nice to know Honda is finally stepping up its AWD technology. I still think the CR-V has the worst AWD system in the entire compact SUV category, but this Pilot is showing promise. Before Honda fans start attacking me, yes I do know of the SH-AWD used in Acuras and I admit it is a nifty performance AWD unit. However SH-AWD is reserved mainly for high-end Acuras (they even dumbed it down on the new RDX vs. the old one!) so it is currently inapplicable to Honda.

This isn't a bad vehicle. It'll tell ya, it's a lot better than the lousy crossovers that Toyota is seeing for nearly 30k. So I'd choice the Honda over Toytoa. Im pretty sure that Honda isn't trying to compete Toyota 4Runner, so that's out of the comparison. I suspect Honda is trying to compete with Jeeps, but to be frank I don't see it being comparable. Because Jeep has prided it self and proved that it's both on road and truly offload. Jeep still has a lot of the luxary immenties that would be offered on luxary sedans but in jeep. I think this is something for people who don't want the crappy crossovers from toyota, and how may not want the Jeep's true offroad, and want percentage of onroad majority of the time with some light towing and weekend hike trip in tame terrian. fair to say that a test of off road capability needs to be unbiasly done on both and let the results speak.

What it all really comes down to is ZF's 9HP 9-speed auto, which provides about 1:20 total ratio in 1st with the final drive. This is the same setup as Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. I just wish Honda stopped screwing with electronic wisardry and simply gave us useable paddles that I could use to restrict the transmission to the 1st gear. Well maybe an LSD too.

I don´t think that the marketing stunt the Honda Rep is presenting has to do to much with off-roading, but it´s about transmission capabilities. We ALL know and understand that the new Pilot is for hauling kids back and forth, and it will be good at it. If some people will need it in sand, dunes or whatever dusty situation, it´s good to know it can take it. And for those in colder weather, having a better system to tackle ice is for the best. So, don´t think about ground clearance or angles, or suspension travel. Think how safe and assured a mom will be in this thing, next time she cakes a precious baby on a bad road where she is not sure what to do, with a standard, normal, obsolete car.

lol its nice to see the new tech.. but TBH my Mitsubishi Lancer SE AWC (not S-AWC) would eat this trail too easily - it may not have different traction modes like the pilot BUT I got a 3 mode switch which allows me to choose 2WD /4WD AUTO /4WD LOCK - 4WD LOCK would climb these trails easily as it sends 70% torque to rear wheels + traction control is tuned very effectively - 3 years ive owned my Mitsubishi - only 1x did I get stuck in 1.5ft of snowbtw does the new 2016 pilots have a LOCK mode like the old pilots?

I suspect that most folks that look at these ain't planing on hardcore offroading. However it would be nice to know that someone could go on a country road,get home if it unexpectedly snowed while you were at work or Church,or if it snowed on my anniversary I could still take the wife out to eat. And hopefully get on her good side.Or if somebody got sick or injured while their was snow on the ground you could get them to the ER. I think its geared more for that than it is hardcore offroading. While personally I like the ideal of a more rugged vehicle I do unfortunately see the downside of that when I put gas in my Pickup. I usually spend between 50-60 dollars every 2 weeks in gas. And most of that is to get to work and back.However I do like my truck. Guess it shows that just because I'm not in my 20's or 30's anymore don't mean I'm completely dead.Now I wish my kids would hurry up and get rich while they still know everything!

I have a 2003 Pilot awd with VTM-4 (diff lock). If you have VTM-4 then read your owner's manual. The instructions are in there. You can definitely go off road with this, just not rock climbing. Check KZbin videos if anyone (or idiots) wants to counter this....

I kinda like the new look but I have yet to sit in one and see how the suspension and the shocks have improved ...I go with my dad in our 13/14' pilot to work and the way it goes over even the smallest NY pothole or an unpaved road, it sucks big time. I feel like a sack of potatoes, there is too much "sway" . However I personally wouldn't buy the pilot but overall the design is nice and it seems Acura is lagging behind. I sense Acura might just be bisong its time and will probably add some "unique" feature but also bump up the pricetag

lmfao no they don't kmsl. they use their own shit. infiniti doesn't have an awd vehicle that doesn't need a driveshaft like Honda does. sh-awd sends 100% power to any wheel and detects spin before it happens, preventing spin and giving great traction during cornering
