The "Cush Drive" in the rear is to protect the main bearings of your crankshaft from hard impact when you change gears up and down. The cush drive has large rubber pieces that cushion the shock when your chain goes super tight under load and grabs the rear sprocket, and that "cushioning" protects your engine's main bearings. They are hard against the transmission which is hard against the primary chaincase chain and then front sprocket, to drive chain, to rear sprocket. All metal on metal. So I say it was a good choice to make the purchase. It's an early 1950's late 1940's invention. They called it "Cush Drive".

Just a word of advice. The chain guard is not to protect the chain so much (from dirt). Rather it is to protect you. You see if every you should snap that chain it can cut your leg off. Hence the Chain Guard is a guard against the chain severing your leg! This has happened many many years ago. Before you were born. It's the same with any motorcycle, I am not singling out KTM. BTW full disclosure. I street raced my 1976 Triumph T140V Bonneville 750 with the chain guard off (someone stole it). The chain never snapped. In fact one time the left rear passenger foot peg came off and got caught between the rear sprocket and the chain. It broke a tooth and also it yanked the engine so hard to the left because the footpeg caught between the sprocket and chain momentarily and that stopped -locked up the rear wheel. Anyway this snapped a frame plate holding the motor to the frame. I stopped riding the bike after that. It was a case of poor sportsman sabotage. I had won a cafe race against a new 1992 Kawasaki KZ1100 and the owner and a few of his bar bud's were caught red handed by me with their hands on the bottom of my motorcycle. I could not find anything wrong (it was dark and I am Naive) so I rode off. Very soon after, the nut that "they" had indeed removed allowed the cross frame bolt to loosen up and that contributed/caused to the engine yanking to the left. I'm on your side and I never had my leg severed by a chain. But I am 67 and when I was young - 20 something I heard horror stories and I am just passing on that knowledge to you. So you can keep the chain guard off and probably nothing will ever happen. But God forbid if your chain snapped and let loose it would possibly fly up and cause you a rather bad injury. At the very minimum I say keep an eye on the links and also keep that chain oiled and properly adjusted. Remember when you sit on the bike you compress the shocks and that makes the chain tighter. So always have the correct looseness of the chain as per the Owner's manual. Example 1-3/4" freeplay in the center-up and down for total free play with a 10 pound force. (That's not a KTM spec that is my Triumph spec). Peter
@PeterDad60
@PeterDad60 6 жыл бұрын
Your Monoshock is mounted near the swing arm bushing so nevermind what I said about sitting on the bike and compressing the shock and making the chain draw tight. That only applies to the conventional twin shock designs located far from the swing arm pivot.

Hey dude if you want to fix your header buy some masking tape and tape it off where the seem is. Use stainless steel wool or scotch brite pad to freshen it up. Be sure to rub it all in one direction as it will have a grain to it. It wont match the rest of the exhaust but will look better! If you really want it to shine you could do the same thing using a harbor freight air dremel a small buffing pad and buffing grease.

dooode, sick bike! I love this thing. Great video as well. You managed to cover everything. Its the bike I wanted to covert to sumo but the dealer rep was being a pain in the ass. Great choices on color and options. I like the upgraded triple clamp but the bike looks stable when you ride on the streets. The 5" Rear tire is always a debate and mystery like you pointed out. All said and done it's worth it if you can get it on and working with no rub. Great job.

Do you know if the 16 came corked up stock with reeds in intake boot and restrictive exhaust or are they pretty unrestricted, is stock tune good, any annoying lean spots or stalling/flaming out? Thanks
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 Жыл бұрын
The 16 didn’t come with reeds in the intake so you don’t have to worry about removing that, but it does come pretty smogged up elsewhere. You can find a cheap Des mpg kit online for like 20 bucks with a few tuner sod bolts and maybe washers that let you pull off some hoses and a charcoal canister to free that up. You also will deal with flameout pretty bad stock, and even worse if adding an aftermarket exhaust. Back in 2016 the best fix was adjusting the TPS but over the years I’ve found with the Ktm’s the best route is to leave the tps stock and get a fuel tuner, jd , bday, multiple brands sell them but they are all the same unit and work great at eliminating flameout stalling, and smooth out power everywhere

Are these 500s suitable for longer distance road riding where youre doing 60-70 mph for long periods?
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 Жыл бұрын
They can be, if it’s all you ever do is highway riding maybe a 701 would be a better choice for sustained high speed/ higher rpms, but I did plenty of highway riding on my 500. It’s important to have the proper gearing for the type of riding your going to do. Sprockets are cheap and quick to swap out and I had multiple chains set at different lengths, I had 13-15t fronts and 42-50 tooth rears. I might run 13-48, 15,42, all depends on the type od riding but obviously the bigger the rear the lower your top end is and more torque you have on bottom end, smaller rear sprocket for highway riding

What is the "Six Days" line that KTM is making? Whats the difference?
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 7 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Lund Nielsen Every year ktm releases some of their bikes in a limited six days edition to commemorate the ISDE International six days enduro. Every year the enduro is in a different country and ktm uses a custom graphic to represent the country in which the enduro is being held that year. The bike basically comes with 2-3k in performance ktm power parts and is "supposed" to be able to tackle any terrain out of the box. This is the list of upgrades for the 2016 ktm 500exc six days. Six Days Equipment 4CS closed-cartridge fork from WP Suspension Camel seat for improved long-distance comfort Orange-anodized CNC machined triple clamps Supersprox Stealth 2-Piece rear sprocket features an aluminum inner ring for reduced weight with steel teeth for durability Solid rear brake disc without holes or slots for improved heat resistance and reduced pad wear Floating front brake disc for consistent braking Front brake disc guard Front Axle Puller to simplify front wheel removal Brake pedal wire for extra protection Orange radiator grills Orange chain guide Six Days logo on black wheels Exclusive Six Days graphics Radiator fans on the 350 XCF-W Six Days and 500 EXC Six Days for temperature management in extreme conditions Carbon fiber pipe guard on the 300 XC-W Six Days two-stroke to protect the expansion chamber along with a special charcoal grey silencer with anthracite anodized Six Days logo

How hard is it to swap back and forth between supermoto tires to dirt tires?
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
once you get it down about 30 minutes, if you dont care abouy scratching the wheels then 25 minutes, if you keep stock size rotor for front and dont need to change the caliper bracket then its a 10-15 minute swap
@Drunken_Hamster
@Drunken_Hamster 8 жыл бұрын
What if you just put bigger rotors on the dirt tires? Better stopping power to boot with the easier swap times. Also, how wide are each of the tires? Also, also. I swear I thought this video said *300* EXC and that it'd be the two stroke bike until I saw the exhaust pipe and realized there was no expansion chamber. Sh*t had me checking the title like "Waaaahhht?"
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
+Hazardous-Nebula wheels are 17x3.5 and 17x5 tires 120 and 160. and that would make swaps faster, but havnt felt like spending the money on another rotor, plus if i put a bigger rotor on the dirt tires then the stock six days rotor guard wony fit and i would have to try and find a bigger one to fit. that plus the added potential for damage with a bigger surface area it just hasnt been at the top of my list

I have been thinking about buying a EXC and use it in traffic.Because i want something special :D and the bike is an eyegasm itself but i am aware that it is still a competition bike and it needs love. I hope you can answer my questions and sorry for my bad grammar ^_^ Greetings from Germany :)
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
It seems like you already know the answer to your question, the 500 exc does not make a great road bike and the hours on the engine rack up extremely quick. I work in NYC and often ride it into work, its the absolute most fun way to commute but like i said adds hours to the engine very fast so you will be doing alot of oil changes. I do changes every 15 hours which can easily be every other week, i use Motul 300v which is probably the most expensive but in my opinion the best performance oil and it costs me about 40 dollars per oil change. Its actually pretty good on gas even when doing a bunch of wheelies and constantly revving the engine and insurance is very cheap even with full coverage

It's not that difficult on the 2-stroke models, my friend converted his 2016 125 EXC Sixdays to a supermoto trim. All you need is a pair of supermoto wheels, a new front brake disc, probably an adapter for your rear sprocket and or just buy a new sprocket and if you're planning on using the original speedometer you'll have to buy a magnet for the sensor and istall it to your front brake disk and you'll probably have to trim your front fork guards as well

Can you explain more about what you meant about the triple clamp being changed out to better fit the sumo setup? I have the same bike and want to sumo it. Thanks! Love your setup!
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 7 жыл бұрын
David Vanmeter the triples hold the forks in a certain geometry, effecting the way the bike handles and the rake of the front end. they are designed for proper geometry with a 21 inch wheel in the front. now imagine replacing that 21 inch wheel with a 17 inch wheels, the front axle is now 2 1/2 inches closer to the ground, yet the forks are at the same angle they were before, the geometry is no longer correct and can be fixed by changing the triples clamps

Does the EXC really make a good supermoto?
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
it depends what you consider a good supermoto. It is sexy as hell. turns heads everywhere. can switch to supermoto very quickly and easily, handles great, great on gas, fun as shit to rip around and do wheelies absolutely everywhere. Decent amount of maintenance, it is abusive on the motor, tops out around 100 and you will probably hurt the motor constantly riding that fast. its not meant to be a supermoto and cant be ridden crazy fast but from 0-80 this thing is absolutely nuts and i abused it for 55hours before checking the valves for the first time and they were just about to be out of spec. unless you have a bike build from the factory for street i suppose its as good as any other dirtbike switched over to supermoto setup

you definitely needed that cush drive on the rear, it will save your gearbox from damage than can happen with a direct drive setup.
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
yea i wasnt sure but i read that it can really help the gearbox on bikes that arent meant for road riding like this so i went with it, only like an extra 100 bucks or so

+Dark Warp 9 street wheels do not always ome with cush drive hub you have to pay extra its 100-150 extra i believe. i have the cush hub and havn't had any issues so far, dont know if its necesarry but cant hurt
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
+Dark vush drive hub is 2 seperate pieces when you have the back wheel off the sprocket and front half of hub will come off and inside are a bunch of rubber triangles that act like dampeners for the torque, if you have a cush drive hub you will know because everytime you put the wheel on it keeps falling apart on you.

These new ktm headlights have 35W H4 bulbs in them (older version have ba20d which sucks btw) Now I wonder did anyone change theirs to 55/60W H4? I've ordered this new headlight for my bike and plan to upgrade existing H4 bulb but I am afraid stronger bulb might melt the reflector :/ Have also searched internet forums about it, couldn't find any info. Anyone? :) Very nice bike btw, taz mazz! :)

Can i travel long with ktm 500 supermoto ??? 24/7
@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 7 жыл бұрын
Eedacx it is an enduro by design so it isn't meant for being ridden at high speeds for long periods of time but it can be done. obviously a lot of people use these bikes as supermoto but you need to always keep in mind that it is an enduro and has to be maintained like one . gear the bike with sprockets that will allow the speeds you are looking to do the most often, I suggest a cush drive hub on your supermoto rear wheel to reduce stress on the transmission, and you must keep up with oil changes and cleaning the air filter. You can go longer with the oil changes depending on mileage and type of riding if I am only riding street I will go longer I between changes than if I was riding dirt. I have 5000 miles on my engine now and plan on rebuilding the top end this winter which I will have at least 6000 miles by then. I would probably push it closer to 10k miles if they were all street but majority of my miles are off-road abuse.

@mazzeo321
@mazzeo321 8 жыл бұрын
The taillight and turn signals are separate, and are both made by Sicass Racing. sicassracing.com/store/products/tail_lights/sicass_easy_fit/2011_sx_xc_2012-14_all_ktm_easy_fit_under_fender?cPath=105_41_43_81& That is the taillight, the taillight comes attached to a new rear fender piece as you can see in the link. sicassracing.com/store/turn_signals/led/orange_lens_led_flat_mount_ktm?cPath=105_46_2222& Those are the turn signals. You can drill a hole and mount them where ever you like, you can see in the video where i mounted mine. They plug directly into the factory ktm harness.
