2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport/Montero - Two and four-wheel drive modes explained

Күн бұрын

During regular driving, the vehicle is normally driven in 2H, which is its two-wheel, rear-wheel drive mode. This mode reduces fuel consumption by just sending torque to the rear wheels and also gives you the flexibility of driving on all surfaces.
Unlike some of its competitors, the Pajero Sport can also be driven in 4H mode on all surfaces. This mode engages the front axle and the car's onboard computer determines how each wheel behaves when torque is being distributed between the axles.
Some vehicles in this segment can't be driven in a four-wheel drive mode on sealed surfaces due to differential lock up. This occurs when a centre differential is locked to evenly split torque between the front and rear axle. As a result, when turning, the front and rear axles are moving at different speeds, which causes the centre differential to wind up with tension.
The Pajero Sport then has an additional set of features for off-road driving. It can be put into its low-range four-wheel drive mode, where a low-range gearbox is used as a torque multiplier. This mode should only be used when off-road.
The effect of low-range is lower speed, but more accuracy with torque delivery. It's suitable for situations off-road where bursts of torque would unsettle the car.
Finally, the Pajero Sport has a low-range four-wheel drive mode that also locks the centre differential. This mode evenly splits torque between the front and rear axle and can be used in combination with the rear differential lock to further increase off-road ability.
Like the centre differential lock, the rear differential lock will split torque between the two rear wheels to ensure they both receive drive, even when one wheel is off the ground.
To help demonstrate this, we lined up a tricky hill that features undulations and uneven portions of terrain. While it may not look difficult, this hill causes the Pajero Sport's all-wheel drive system to continuously shift torque delivery and will ultimately force it to try drive wheels while others are off the ground or have very limited traction.

I bought a Montero Sport in 2021 and I am loving it to bits. No gimmicks, just an SUV that is built to take you wherever you want to go with no drama.

Doesn't explain at all. Super Select 2 has: * 2H - Rear Wheel Drive (Fine for bitumen roads etc and driving around everywhere) * 4H - 4WD Constant All Wheel Drive (Fine for bitumen roads etc and driving around everywhere) * 4HLc - 4WD High with Locked Center Diff (4WD only, not for roads) * 4LLc - 4WD Low Range (Changes the gear ratio) with Locked Center Diff (Low Speed 4WD only) where you need that extra grunt) Also has a button you can press that will lock in the Rear Diff too. Locking in the Rear Diff turns off traction etc. Also has a button you can press that will turn off Traction Control so if you are in 4HLc you can turn if off on the beach etc.

Last mode used 4LLC with rear diif lock do not de-activate traction control, it only does for it for stability control which is a different thing. You can clearly see TC working on front wheels on the last attempt. That is a key of such a good traction feature of pajero and triton

Nice job but... 4H with centre lock would do it easy.. Worth pointing out most 4 X 4 don't have a centre diff to lock. This is an excellent system allowing 4 x 4 at highway speeds all day.

Thats impressive although would have been handy to see the actual settings. Also, with Subaru AWD its on all the time, but with this Mitsubishi, is there a speed limit for when 4 wheel drive and the diff locks are engaged please, as I fear that standard rear wheel drive only on a daily basis wouldn’t be enough for where I live, so can you drive in 4 wheel drive all the time ? Any help, much appreciated.

I was wondering that, ive left him a comment. Subaru is prob my preferred choice with the AWD for general bad rural road use if this is rear wheel drive only unless 4 wheel drive selected, and even then, can it be driven at speed in 4 wheel drive ?

What's the difference between 4WD and AWD?
@JuanGarcia-zq5tp
@JuanGarcia-zq5tp 8 жыл бұрын
+aabidam This vehicle has 4 wheel drive, so you can select whether to operate just on 2 wheel drive and save on fuel, and when needed switch to 4 wheel drive. In an all wheel drive vehicle (AWD) you don't select it is done automatically. Also in some 4WD vehicles, you can select between 4 HI or 4 LO, and that means that gears are much lower in 4 LO so it allows you to ascend inclines better.

Thank God Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner are stealing its sales which is theyre former owners of SUA Probe Pajero sport. even mux is starting to eat like 3 meals a day. good luck for them if stll they never conduct a recall
