If it understeers, they should have reduced the setting on the front anti roll bar, increase the rear one, and take some of the rear wing down to reduce downforce in the rear. Everything on this car is adjustable, so you can make it drive exactly as you want.

+derbigpr500 Around 2:39 he said that he would add another hole to the rear sway bar to stiffen it up even more, meaning that it was already set as stiff as they could set it. I would assume they also adjusted the front sway bar and rear wing.

your trying to compare a high momentum car with this...a low momentum meaning most of the weight sits behind the driver. by decreasing the front you be understeering much more because the rear already is pushing and front not enough stiffness to handle the back.

+B00steDevil That is not correct. Anti-roll bars influence the wheel load difference between the inner and outer wheel on that axle. For example: A stiffer anti-roll bar increases the wheel load difference. The outer wheel is loaded more and the load on the inner wheel is reduced more. Due to the tyre characteristics the amount of side force won on the outer wheel can't compensate the amount of side force you lose on the inner wheel. Therefore the slip angle on the front axle for a certain amount of force has to be increased. This means that the the difference between the slip angles on front and rear axle increases and the driver needs to increase his steering angle. The car understeers more. Contrary to that a softer anti-roll bar in the front reduces understeer. However the anti-roll bars in the front and rear should always be changed in opposite directions simultaneously if you want the keep the same amount of body roll. I hope you can make at least some sense of this.

+fesch198 the stiffer the anti roll bar, the more force is required to cause body roll. So the stiffer an anti roll bar is the smaller the disparity in wheel load is between the inner and outer wheels.

I can't help but suspect that Porsche geared the GT4 long to handicap it against the 911 range. Shorten the gears a decent amount and this car would be significantly quicker to 60, 1/4 mile, and lap times.

+Zygrene Yours is the only logical explanation of that long gearing I have heard to this point. Porsche apparently have claimed that they geared it long so it's drivers wouldn't have to do a lot of upshifting when overtaking. I read that in a review of this car on the internet. That is bullcrap. Someone here said it is geared that way for top speed. That is even bigger bullcrap. So the best explanation that actually makes a lot of sense I've heard so far is yours.

+Christos Segkounas Yeah those reasons make no sense. Overtaking is about acceleration, which would be quicker with shorter gearing. The top speed excuse is silly too. On most race tracks the GT4 will never hit 150mph, which is still achievable with much shorter gearing. Sixth sense is telling me it's gotta be a handicap. I hope someone drops in a shorter final drive and does a comparison vs stock.

+Kentavis Perry It has to do with balance, understeer/oversteer is a question of balance. But the aero package only affects high speed corners on road cars, it's not as effective as in race cars.

GT4 is such a weapon! Far beyond many cars though Randy is 100% correct in saying tighten the rear. Keen to know if they had the rear sway set to hard as it is adjustable.

Righting this, before I see the review. Never thought I'd buy a Porsche that was not a 911... Then, along came the Panamera (still an ugly duckling) and now, the fabulous Cayman (ok, it's a cheaper/lighter 911). This car is so awesome in everyday usage that it's frightening. You do your chores, get stuck in traffic, buy some groceries, get stuck in traffic, find a good portion of free race track (also know as roads) and you are in paradise. Since Porsche solved the "floating front syndrome" it's been one masterpiece after another. The perfect car for the street racer. Now, on with the show. Hope you don't make me eat my words. Cheers.

LOVE that car! Was Porsche just giving the purists time to adjust to the Cayman by waiting so long to finally give it some legs? The design has all the makings for a great race car and sports car combo. I think this one is going to catch on like fire. If I hit the jackpot, I would go and pick one up myself. Maybe someday.....

This car will cost a fortune in about 5 years. It is a serious investment right now. Last Porsche with an NA Flat 6 One of the last Porsches with the manual Plus, it's a special verison. Definitely would buy if I had the money ;)

Porsche Cayman GT4.....its gonna be a fun battle with this against the MX5, not in a race, but both seems really fun to drive. As for the understeer and tall gearing, thats Porsches way of not letting the Cayman get too far ahead from the 911.

Hey, MotorTrend! I have a question. So, you said the Cayman would be quicker with shorter gearing, but why is that? Longer gearing means the engine revs higher, correct? As in the car has a higher red-line/rev limiter, so the gearing is a bit long, right? So why would the car be quicker with a shorter gearing ratio, since that would take away the higher reving nature of the engine? I was just curious about this is all :) Who knows, I'm not a mechanic or an engineer, so I probably asked a really dumb question, but again, I'm curious! Haha! Thanks so much for the awesome videos! Keep em' coming, please! +Daniel Maia yes, as he mentioned, you could change the final drive. A relatively inexpensive fix, which I've read early owners are already doing.

eeterp32 I think you're being a bit ridiculous. Changing the final drive would be far less expensive than changing a gear set and is a fairly common mod for many race cars. I've found ring+pinion sets for a 911 online from $2g - $3,500. Remember I'm talking final drive, not actual ratios.

+Daniel Maia Would final drive gearing change all the gears? (1st-6th) Honest question, I guess I always figured final drive gearing would be only 6th gear but that may just be complete ignorance. Would changing the final drive gearing cause you to hit redline sooner in each and every gear?

tkobvious The final drive is like a multiplier for your gears. If you get a shorter final drive, for example from 4:1 to 5:1, every gear will be shortened. Redline would be hit at a lower speed in every gear. (hope this helped)

+Ten and Two Don't think the Z28 can be put in the same sentence as the Cayman GT4 when it comes to dynamics or driving, not even comparable to the most basic Cayman. Z28 is fast on a track because it has a lot of power, super wide and super grippy tires and a lot of downforce, but it's not a particularly good car to drive. It's still a heavy muscle car. GT4 is a race car with number plates. There's a very big difference between a car that just has a lot of grip and power, and a car that is naturally balanced, mid engined, very low center of gravity, very short wheelbase, etc.

I don't believe for a second that the long gearing was done to make the car a better road car. Everything is right except for gearing. Porsche are still holding the Cayman back.

The long gearing was designed withe 'Ring in mind. Much longer, faster track. Still, to put down the time it did in this shootout against cars with 200-300 more HP is literally unbelievable. $100,000 or less will not buy you a better car with more exclusivity and accessible performance.

Randy should really get an AntiReflection coating for his glasses. Not only would he see better, but the glasses would look much nicer on camera. There wouldn't be any reflections in the lenses.

I was hoping they'd say that the gearing was also changed, in the beginning of the video. even with all of the upgrades, the gearing still holds it back (omg 911 sales!)

+TheCamaro5 I don't disagree the gearing was to keep the acceleration away from certain 911 models. However the 911 is not going away; it has been around for 51 years.

Randy says he would like to change the sway bar setup to eliminate the understeer, so why aren't they doing that ???? Thats the reason Porsche made it adjustable !

there must be some adjustment in suspension that would make this car faster... It doesnt make sense to be fast as z28 on this track.
