It would only be much if he had said emotion. Considering the fact that the word emotions implies that there are many different things - in this case, emotions - the word many is correct.

Did they cut the Chaplin audio ("You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!") from the ballad?
@jesuspectre9883
@jesuspectre9883 6 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, the audio engineers constantly edited the layered sound clips during the season. What bothers me about that is that it modifies the meaning of the show. Also, it gives the judges the sense that the clips are changeable, experimental and haphazardly assembled. It's like the Cadets with Stoned/Awakening-- if you're changing your show drastically every week with capes, and no capes, and being childlike, and then not being childlike, and then adding extra solo dancers and then deleting them , and then adding full length smocks, and then deleting them, changing, changing changing week after week after week, that means you have no clear vision. Also, marching members should do their own editing and sound design, not professional audio designers. What are the kids learning by simply pressing "play"?

@jesuspectre9883
@jesuspectre9883 5 жыл бұрын
@@justaking8741 The shows in order of design excellence are the following: 1) Blue Devil's Felliniesque. If you know anything about Fellini, you know that he was a jokester, a self-avowed failed filmmaker and a ne'er do well lover who was besieged by clowns in his own life. The color guard comes out as stage hands in their underwear in the beginning of the show because they forgot their pants. What kind of film set is this? That's how this show started. A brilliant, breathtaking, exposed hornbook, and a circus-like film set with surprisingly gritty characters. And by the end, Fellini never shows up-- a Humanist message saying that we only have each other, and the clowns and absurdity in our own lives is what it's all about. Breathtakingly brilliant. 2) Velvet Knights 1992 Magical Mystery Tour. If you saw this show live, in the middle of it all, you turned to look at the audience and realized that we all had become one. Everyone in the crowd is dependent on these iconic storybook figures for laughter in our lives. The characters mixed and matched and lampooned themselves, creating a new brand of comedic chaos. Finally the pompous opera Valkyrie in her viking helmet gets eaten by Jaws, sending the crowd into hysterics. The drum major could have thrown himself into the crowd at that point, and he would have landed safely. This is the essence of accessible entertainment. Astounding showmanship. 3) Cadets Appalachian Spring. Cadets introduced a new style of drill, never seen before in the 40 years of the activity. The drill design was a rebirth, a Spring awakening, if you will. Watching it, you believed that a new chapter had begun in the activity, and the East coast had breathed new life into the drum corps genre. Packed with satisfying set pieces, and completely without props or accoutrement of any kind, the show soared, setting up its own rules for dramatic heightening using the drill alone. The style of drill matched the essence of the music so entirely, that by the end, you realized that this activity was capable of shaking off the cold of winter and reinventing itself, which was a simple gift for jaded drum corps audiences.

Lyrics from 0:30 Elegy for Dunkirk Jeff Beck Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! Re-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow thee. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee The silence of eternity, Interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease, Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm, Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire, Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm! This show was a reckless assemblage of gravely serious historic recordings of fascist leaders, along with other frivolous modern day advertisements, all lightly grouped as "Propaganda". What an insanely ignorant show concept. Millions of people have died because of deceptive government propaganda. Families are being ripped apart as we speak because of propaganda on the issue of immigration, for example. And this show equates Meow Mix along with Hitler as examples of "propaganda"? Yikes. The show even featured a Trump quote, raising the spectre of the worst, lying, delusional and manipulative propagandist in American history, Donald Trump. Some marching members have stated that the show concept centered around the concepts that "Not all propaganda is serious" and "Propaganda is up to interpretation". I'm sorry, that's nothing short of inhuman. Out of embarrassment, the Cavaliers changed the show title to "Fall in Line". Marching members said that the last part of their show was dedicated to the anger they had as marching members toward DCI judges for a previous season's unfair loss-- a juvenile grasp of serious authoritarian messages in history. Worse, an early-season Cavaliers show promotional video titled "Propaganda" featured Nobel peace prize winner, and world-renowned human rights icon Martin Luther King. To label him a "propagandist", and to blindly group all public messaging as "propaganda" is a public relations disaster waiting to happen. The video was taken down. What is going on with this confused design staff who is way, way, way over their heads on this can of worms? Unforgivably reckless. Professional designers in this activity are stumlbling amateurs, dabbling in subjects that, without a clear point of view, leave them exposed to public relations nightmares. Worse, Cavaliers were topped the next year by the Madison Scouts 2017 show, when they dressed up as Native Americans. (Mad Max, they said, even though they didn't pay the royalty for it.) Madison danced around teepees and scalped each other in an ignorant and racist display of stereotyped machismo. Now that was a doozy. Cavaliers' Propaganda now gets second prize for the most reckless show concept ever.

In this confused mess of a show, it's hard to tell what's deadly propaganda and what's a sincere wish for the health and prosperity of mankind. As an audience, we want to climb aboard, but we're not sure about the point of view of the messages in this show. Is Elegy for Dunkirk a sincere plea to the Lord for peace amid the strain of war, or is it propaganda? Is religion meant to manipulate? Or is it an earnest cry for help to a higher power? We'll never know. Is the speech from Chaplin's The Great Dictator meant to be taken at face value as a sincere wish for the strength of man to overcome oppressive governments and rise above, together? Or is the speech just a sarcastic commentary on the manipulative nature of all government officials who pul on the heartstrings? We'll never know. Unfortunately this show has no firm point of view, no sense of humanity in it, and as a result, there's no identifiable antagonist, and we're lost. As the designers said, "We're not necessarily out to declare whether propaganda in itself is good or bad, we kind of want to put it out there for you to make that decision." That accounts for the lack of point of view, and the audience's lack of empathy with the action on the field. Worse than lacking a clear POV, this show features the appalling pairing of Hitler and Meow Mix as equally annoying forms of propaganda, a gasp-inducingly sophomoric design concept.

@DECLAN DOUGAN Marching members must understand their show design, question it, research it and embrace it or request revisions from their design team. They must know every facet of the design and embrace its clear point of view, its historical research, its grounding in an intentional thematic argument. They must not leave it to vague "it's about propaganda in general" or "it's up to interpretation." No committed professional performing arts company says that. When you spend a million dollars and a million manhours on a production, and someone says what's the meaning of your show, and you say "it's up to your interpretation", that's not a sophisticated concept talking, that's fraud. When Cavaliers assembled their "men in a rail yard" fantasy harkening back to Gangs of New York, what did it mean? What were they fighting over in a rail yard? Why were they fighting each other? What was the reasoning behind it? What's their objective? Was it historical, like Gangs of New York? Or was it a fantasy? Was it based on historic turn of the century railroad vagabonds? Then why were they dressed so outlandishly in hypersexualized spandex and white silk blouses? I'm sorry, it made no sense, historically. If it's a fantasy on railroad vagabonds, make it so. If it's an historical account, make it so. But this wishy-washy "leaving it up to interpretation" is lazy design. It's reckless, and it's ripe for misinterpretation, it's uncomfortable to watch because it makes no sense, and it's simply not on a level of a professional production. Professional productions now often employ abstract elements, warped timelines, science fiction premises, metaphysical influences, anachronisms and absurdities, but they make sure that the production makes sense to paying audiences. There must be a thematic argument beyond the subject matter. Hint: If you see your designers struggling to find an ending, and they ask the marching members to climb up on the props and scream, or jump off something for no reason, that's a sign that there is no ending. There's no arc to the show. There's no through-line. No purpose. In "Railyard Dandies of New York", the vagabonds climbed on the barrels and screamed. The end. The audience shrugged. "What are they doing? I want to understand this!" The truth is, nobody knew what they were doing, or why. Not even the performers.

@@jesuspectre9883 I don't know what corps you marched (if any), but the idea of one of the performers going up to a member of the design or instructional staff and asking them to revise the show really only has two possible outcomes. @@jesuspectre9883 The design team that year was very clear in what they saw in the show and explained the feelings, moods and designs for each movement of the show. @@MS-df2fk That's called abuse. Designers are responsible for the decisions they make, and for explaining them. You are an example of what's wrong with drum corps today.
