2017/04/10: Harvard Talk: Postmodernism & the Mask of Compassion

I was invited to speak at Harvard University in mid-April on the use of compassion as a mask for the advance of the profoundly anti-western postmodern and neomarxist doctrines. There was a fair bit of controversy surrounding the invitation (which accounted in part for the relatively confrontational tone of the interview/discussion). There were protesters in attendance, one of whom insisted (as is quite common) in speaking out of turn, because, of course, her comments were so important that putting them forward justified breaking the agreed-upon rules. That said, the protesters were civil.

This has to have been one of the more impressive interviews Dr. Peterson has given. The interviewer was definitely brimming with energy and full of tricks. Dr. Peterson has not failed to impress. I was almost biting my nails with the questions the dude was hurling his way. It was almost like watching a game of chess!

The systematic postmodernist erosion of the concepts of reason and evidence, along with the systematic Cultural Marxist obsession with the orchestration of victimhood, identity politics, anger, hatred, fear, abuse and scapegoating, has created a perfect storm in 21st century liberal democracies. If you are interested in examining the irrational, absurd and destructive out-workings of this convergence go to thesleepofreason.net where you will find a wide range of articles examining the consequences.

Laura Right? I was born a leftie (school, NBC news), and I remember looking at the Justin Trudeau's decision of having 50% female cabinet and thinking finally! Women have had it too rough for too long, they .... they ....well, there's so many things ... well, actually, they kinda have it good for a lot of things to be honest .... then I remember JP's thoughts on the same issue and it blew me away how wrong I was thinking, hiring based on genitalia instead of skill.

I read Marx, and I wanted to know what kind of man he was. The more I found out the less I thought of him. Such as, He took advantage of his domestic help, got her pregnant, and did not admit parenthood for over 13 years. He seldom bathed, maybe once or twice a YEAR. His research was done in a library, he hated being around the poor. He was as bourgeois as he could be. He was a true fraud.

For many years now, my favorite quote has been one by C. S. Lewis, and I'm reminded of the quote every time I listen to Peterson: "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C. S. Lewis

ZombieSymmetry Lewis was a wise and honest thinker. Love him! Here is a quote from Muggeridge I hope u find equally moving: So the final conclusion would surely be that whereas other civilizations have been brought down by attacks of barbarians from without, ours had the unique distinction of training its own destroyers at its own educational institutions, and then providing them with facilities for propagating their destructive ideology far and wide, all at the public expense. Thus did Western Man decide to abolish himself, creating his own boredom out of his own affluence, his own vulnerability out of his own strength, his own impotence out of his own erotomania, himself blowing the trumpet that brought the walls of his own city tumbling down, and having convinced himself that he was too numerous, labored with pill and scalpel and syringe to make himself fewer. Until at last, having educated himself into imbecility, and polluted and drugged himself into stupefaction, he keeled over--a weary, battered old brontosaurus--and became extinct. Malcom muggeridge

ReppeNThA707 Yeesh, it's a bit difficult to describe. Initially, being a somewhat jaded consumer of violent and psychologically dark media, I found the beginning of the first volume mildly comical; to the extent that anyone can find humor in ignorance and agreeableness when combined. Indeed the author seemed to write in a sort of depraved, manic fashion at times. But as you progress, Solzhenitsyn's relentless assault on the reader is of itself torturous. Not in a boring way, in the slightest. The vivid descriptions of atrocities committed were enough to cause me to pause occasionally. As previously stated, I have (had?) a pretty cynical view of violence and human life. I'm only halfway through the second volume, but so far I've gained what I'd consider a profound appreciation for Western justice systems. They're not perfect of course, but the level humanity can sink to is disturbing, and they're not even in the same realm as what they could be and have been before. Freedom and truth are just so much more important to me now.

Well ive always had a meta-hero concept to follow that i update continually so i can sort out new problems. So never really had a single person that exemplified that idea enough to name. And Peterson is no different, but ill credit him as part of that concept. Mainly as someone who came along and gave me the words to articulate things ive believed about myth, history, politics, and life in general. I credit him with helping me connect my disparate sort of bushido code of life into a more cohesive structure that can be practically utilized.

@wanderingwizard1361
@wanderingwizard1361 4 жыл бұрын
The main explanation for this is that they don't mean what you mean when they used the word. They don't mean what Stalin or Mao meant. What it ends up coming down to is some sort of democracy with a very heavy social safety net. It's the most watered down, wishy washy sort of "Marxism." That's good and bad. Bad in the sense that I don't think that word is probably what most of them are actually looking for when the describe their views and good in the sense that it's not as if 1 in 5 social scientists are advocating everyone working for the government and zero economic freedom.
@TheClassicWorld
@TheClassicWorld 4 жыл бұрын
@@wanderingwizard1361 That is not true, that's just how they formulate it or their mask. And, at any rate, the worst kind of Marxist and person (or one of the worst ) is the person that thinks he's the 'good guy' within the wicked dark pool, you know. I know this because I used to be a classical Marxist and I have spoken to an endless number of Marxists and post-modernists and 'normal, smart atheists', for example, and I have read the works to some degree, so, I know that at the bottom of all of this is Stalin or Mao. Quite literally, and we could get into that and how it true and how it clearly shows itself to be true, but it is the case.
@wanderingwizard1361
@wanderingwizard1361 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheClassicWorld I think as Peterson says it is pretty doubtful that most people who call themselves Marxist actually really know that much about Mao, Stalin, or 19th century socialism. I think you're giving into feel good cynicism here. Most of these people who call themselves Marxists are just ignorant or using the word in a way that isn't Stalinist or Maoist. Do you really think 1 in 5 social scientists really consciously want to recreate the soviet union? Your suggestion (or implication) that atheism should also be lumped in here is pretty silly. The religious argument that without God there is no morality and everything is subjective is one of the most ridiculous arguments and I have no idea how it is still taken seriously. "Biblical" morality leaves room for slavery and the subjugation of women whereas as a secular form of humanism advocates a morality that puts the individual first.
@davidw2433
@davidw2433 4 жыл бұрын
@@wanderingwizard1361 the individual first comes from religion not secularism. If you listen to JP talking about religious roots to the enlightenment you would see why. The majority of secular people think that group identity is more important than the individual.
@wanderingwizard1361
@wanderingwizard1361 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidw2433 I think you're making quite a stretch here. There is a strong libertarian/conservative individualist sort of wing of the religious right in the United States just as there is a strong liberal/socialist wing of the secular left right now in modern times. I don't know that that those connections are inherent, though. If there is a connection, it's probably that conservatives are a bit more prone to be fearful and so tend more to be insular and traditional. But to say that being religious encourages valuing the individual more? It's not like the Jesus from the bible was a free market libertarian capitalist. He championed the poor and the collective. The biblical Jesus seems much more socialist than capitalist to me if you have to pick one of the two. The enlightenment took place in a Christian context, obviously, because Europe was overwhelmingly Christian and the power of the church could not be ignored. However, much of the enlightenment was a rejection of the authority of tradition and orthodoxy and in that sense the church as well. If you woke up in Europe in the year 1200 and looked around, I don't think you would be thinking that Christianity promoted individualism. People were burned at the stake for heresy--- thinking the wrong thoughts. The roots of the enlightenment came out of theologians questioning the authority of the church. And when you say religion promotes individualism, do you mean Christianity or all religion? The Muslim world today doesn't seem very individualistic to me and the Muslim world is much more religious than the old traditionally Christian countries which are increasingly secular.

Dear Mr. Peterson. I cried when you answered the question of the post phd about his career and the choices that lie before him. I was faced with the same problem, to pursue my career as a researcher or be a misfit and face the hardships to come or leave the system. I left. After 3 years of senseless research and fruitless infights where I was constantly deplatformed I "ragequit". Just to encounter the same problems again in the free market, where this time I ended up compromising for the sake of "my career", slowly but inexorably, again and again, until I felt just like a hollow shell. That's when I broke. I am since living in purgatory, not knowing what I can or should do, constantly churning my options. Which as a fairly intelligent and educated person in theory seems like there are so many, (apparent) goals galore, but none feels right, each feels like another betrayal to myself in the making. Thank you for giving me some pointers and some hope to eventually realign my life and own up to myself and society. You are doing us all a tremendous service. You Sir, are a true dragon slayer!

Here it is not a devils advocate that is confronting Jordan, it is a student, who clearly is presenting a range of questions gathered from interested parties, and is presenting them in the most challenging way he can. Skillfully and politely too, I might add. Jordan is challenged on virtually every point and has an answer at every step at the way. It's a fun listen.

Peterson talks about self authoring, learning to read and write, and setting goals to watch yourself progress. I recently decided to start learning an instrument completely from scratch, and I've got to say, it's been the most embarrassing but self fulfilling thing to stumble through. Most people who are 20+ don't remember what it's like to pick up a brand new skill. They just keep building on the same 4 or 5 things that they're good at for the rest of their life -- which is fine, trying to improve yourself in your area of expertise can be fulfilling too. But it's good to always expand your boundaries too and see what you're capable of as a person. I recommend to everyone here who sort of sees themselves as too habitual or stuck in a rut, to try and learn something brand new from scratch. Whether you learn to swim or golf, play an instrument, write short stories, speak a new language, build things out of wood, program a computer, etc. Something to freshen you up and realize how stupid you are and how little you know. It will probably never come in handy but that's not the point. It's just great to start the process of doing something of which you have no clue. And who knows, it could even turn into a hobby.

It's that if you are going to use yourself as the mechanism by which you orient yourself in the world, then you better make sure you're not transforming yourself into something that's predicated on error. The attempt to speak the truth is a form of psycho-physiological hygiene. If you're oriented as well as you can towards the articulated truth, then you can increasingly rely on your own judgement.

I'm always impressed by Dr. Peterson that's old news, the real fun of watching that young interviewer. I was very impressed by his ability to asses Dr. Peterson's ideas and then pose thought provoking questions, not every one has that skill.

“There is less suffering in the world than if I hadn’t come along.” I’m pretty old, in my seventies, and while I could have done things better than I did, I can honestly say that overall, in small ways, it is true that things are better because I came along. I cannot put into words how wonderful and joyful that makes me feel, I love this stage of life, I didn’t know a human being could be this happy.

Everything Peterson mentioned about what Universities should be teaching to students about being educated and looking to change the world through well educated, well read, articulate historical thought is preached to us Engineering students in First Year. Along with ethics of what we'll be capable of. Not all hope is lost.

I was moved by the profound wisdom in his discourse. I wish I had known someone like him 50 years ago. That being said, better late than never. We have far too few wise voices. I am grateful that I live in the era of KZbin which allows me to listen in on such discourse.

Jordan Peterson is a total hero imho, I think this world is doomed unless more people are willing to speak their TRUTH and stick by it with the intelligence and tenacity he does. He has had to put up with a tremendous amount of bullshit and backlash over his views and yet he defends his position so well and keeps at it - you gotta admire that...

It was a shitty remark to be honest... Totally gratuitous and intellectually suspect at best.
@MatthieuStepec
@MatthieuStepec 6 жыл бұрын
It's not about my feelings (they are irrelevant), it's about him making a point (he doesn't) or giving an argument as to why he thinks that (he doesn't). Therefore this remark is completely gratuitous and seems to be there only because he thinks it will make the audience chuckle. To me, he just seems butthurt because the french intellectuals he seems to refer to (Derrida, Barthes, Foucault etc.) are immensely superior to him. I think it hurts his feelings because he learned to hate the french. Saying all that, I don't even disagree with Peterson. I don't hate him or his views at all, but he is no Roland Barthes...
