Good instrumental background but don't drop the bass from the group, it sounds so much "richer" and "fuller" to my ear with it in, as in other videos. Thanks for a good video.

Michelle, There is quite a difference in air temperature/humidity between the warm-up room and the auditorium, so, consequently, and because most of the fiddlers care about playing in tune, they tune before playing and being judged, in part on whether they are in tune or not. My videos for the last couple of years have been cutting most of the tuning and other delays out. Makes for better enjoyment of the contest viewing.

I never understood this. A fiddle contest, yet you have 3 backup guitars. Puh-LEEZE! One backup guitar will suffice.

You will sometimes see fiddlers play without an accompanist or just one guitar, but with only one guitar there is a risk that your guitar player could break a string. You see a lot of broken strings and a lot of tuning and changing strings happening in between contestants. Even though only the fiddle player is being judged, fiddlers like to feel part of a team and two or three accompanists makes most people feel are comfortable on stage and things feel more 'glued' together. Two guitars is common as is three, or sometimes fiddlers will have a bass, piano, or tenor guitar. The judging is remote at this particular contest, so judges dont see the contestant or know their name, and the microphone is over the fiddle and it doesn't pick up much accompaniment even with three guitars.

That seems like a lame excuse, to be honest. Take care of your guitar, change strings regularly (especially if you are playing on stage), and control your strumming (don't strum like you are tenderizing a piece of meat).

Fiddle players like more than one accompanist for a variety of reasons. I didnt mean to ruffle any feathers :)

When you're playing in a contest the feel and energy of having a bunch of guitars around you is great. The beat and progression of the music is really strong and makes you play better IMO
