Drivelapse video of Ontario's Highway 400 from the Greater Toronto Area northerly to Barrie and Crown Hill, starting from the 401 in Scarborough, and then following the 404 and the 407 before picking up the 400 in Vaughan.

I love the 1950s construction. It's great to see videos cataloging the construction techniques and architecture before necessity demands replacing these roads.

Awesome remake! I remember watching the original version and absolutely enjoying the soundtrack with the ride. No changes here! Didn't know Barrie had so much history behind their highways. Was actually planning a trip to Barrie this last Christmas but my plans never fell through. Hope to visit one day soon though! Great ride and always happy to hear some old tracks.

I agree, I really like these songs as well. KZbin says that they are now forbidden so I was really worried I'd have to replace the songs. That's actually the reason I haven't updated this video yet -- the quality difference between this one and the old one is pretty significant. That's too bad about your trip to Barrie. I really like driving up the 400. It's becoming more typical as it's modernized, but it's kind of a unique highway because of how old it is.

60fps makes this time-lapse video SO much better. I can even pause and read the signs like they're still images now instead of being a blurred mess if I pause on the wrong frame. Also thanks for preserving the original video soundtrack. You did a great job of curating it.

Raine Villa I bought the camera I use to record videos second hand, and it had been set up to record videos at 24 frames per second - unbeknownst to me. So, when I edited all of the footage i was always left with odd artifacts when the frames were blended together. I find this new version is much more watchable than the previous footage.

Ah, so the 400 is older than the Interstate system. Might explain why the Ontario freeway signage is the most original in the country. Those overpasses that have a lot of missing concrete pieces might have to get replaced soon tho. They become ugly and that will certainly have a negative impact on the value of the properties nearby.

I think all of the old overpasses on the 400 are set to be replaced over the next five years. This video is a couple of years old, so since this was filmed work is now ongoing to replace the Highway 89 overpass, and construction to replace a few more in Barrie should begin this summer. I'm kind of sad to see the old bridges go to be honest, but as you say, they're definitely ready to be replaced. I'm not sure why Ontario's signage is as distinct as it is. It's been redesigned a few times over the years. The latest redesign happened in the early 1990s and was actually done as part of the project to add French to the highway signs.

The 400 is one of the original 400-series highways of Ontario, but that highway, especially the 401, 402 and QEW count as originals. That highway system was planned in the '30s by Thomas McQuesten. QEW is Canada's first super highway and was then applied. The other original 400-series highways are then applied in 1952 due to a delay from WW2 while planning, even after the passing of McQuensten in 1948. Speaking of Interstates in the US, in 1956, Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower developed that highway network that can make travelers go anywhere around the contiguous US, even on coast to coast and border to border.

Speaking of the overpasses over the 400, it never gets old. I mean, they never get old but needed upgrades at that time.

Traffic from the 407 onto the 400 dumps them into the express lanes so they can't exit onto Highway 7 or Langstaff Road. Going the other way, anyone entering the 400 from Langstaff Road or Highway 7 can't exit onto the 407. I assume it was done to prevent drivers trying to hastily change lanes during what would be a short corridor.
