What a big adventure to Alaska. Looks like your first trip to Alaska. My first trip was in a Cessna 414C from KHIO (Hillsboro, OR) to PAEN (Kenai, AK). Make one stop along the way. That was a very long flight during the summer. Can't imagine all the effort to fly VFR in a single engine plane. Since then I've flown to PANC many times at the controls of a B737 and enjoyed the great views. Love the RV-7 you have. I helped build a RV-4 when they first came out back in the days you need to do everything, and build jigs.

I took an old 1930's 43ft wooden troller (using an old engine from an antique Ford tractor) up the inside passage from Bellingham, WA to S.E. Alaska. I was roughly 25 years old at the time and too young and foolish to be afraid of anything.. It was the trip of a lifetime. Beautiful country.

I’ve read that late April and early May is the most ideal time to visit Alaska if you’re VFR. As the summertime progresses, it gets rainier.

Very nice video Shawn! I know what it is like not making a destination goal. I failed to dip my toe in the Arctic Ocean on a trip in my ultralight in 2006. I made good on that goal earlier this summer when I flew my Zenith 750 to Tuktoyaktuk. I hope you get another chance to see the Arctic Ocean with your own eyes. It is great reason to go visit the beautiful landscape and people of the north. Joe

Wow!! What an adventure!! What inspired you to make such a long XC? I have my mind set on shorter 400-600 XC trips to visit friends & family. Now, I see how I am limiting myself on how much more I can accomplish. Thank you!

Shawn, was there a lot of wind draft in the cabin, and did the cabin heat keep you pretty warm?
@shawnlirv77 жыл бұрын
I did the trip in Aug, so I didn't have to use the cabin heat. My cabin heat system is only good for OAT is in high 20s or above :-)

That was so cool man!!! Liked you camped out. How long did it take you to build your plane, I read the RV12 takes about 800 hours. Did you quick build it or the other kit the RV7 kit price was really a reasonably priced kit, how was your experience? I was wondering what Lycoming engine you used the 320? Thanks and enjoyed you video.
@shawnlirv76 жыл бұрын
Hindukush thanks! It took me about 1900 hours in 3 years to build it. It was build from standard kit, or slow build. The plane has about 500 hours now, really enjoyed it. The engine is Lycoming IO-360, 180 horses.

Takes some careful planning for that trip not like your flying a bush plane can set it down on dirt road or river gravel.
