definitely, former F-16 pilots, flying that low to the terrain takes practice. I can't believe the RV4 airframe and how 100 percent sound everything appears during these flight maneuvers. Stunning really. Did Vans ever replace the RV4 kit with an upgraded model or does each and every model have its unique characteristics?
@WheelsInTheSky4 ай бұрын
@dabneyoffermein595. Hi, glad you enjoyed the video. Vans still offers the RV4 kit for sale on their website. Of course they also offer several other kits. Since the kits are put together by the owners, each one is going to be somewhat unique. Burnie’s has a 180 hp engine, so it has great performance. We flew a six ship formation yesterday, Burnie was in his RV14, although he likes that plane, he made several comments about how much he likes the way his RV4 handles, especially in formation.

Hi Phil. Those Sling aircraft sure look nice. When I was looking for a plane, I was able to get a ride in an RV8, and so I kinda gravitate in that direction. But then I put a wanted add in Barnstormers and found my Rocket. I’ve heard that you have some restrictions over there on flying, what are they? Here I generally fly in remote areas and just have to maintain a 500’ bubble around people and structures. Also limited maneuvering below 1500’. I miss my days in the AF. Enjoy the VANS RV site. Bad ass, I know there is so much that goes into learning to flying and actually piloting a craft but is it pretty intuitive?, your plane can turn on a dime, I want to fly someday, be safe
@WheelsInTheSky3 жыл бұрын
Hi MetalMan. I think anything is intuitive once learned. If you’re interested, find a place that gives lessons, talk to a few instructors and ask for an introductory flight. The introductory flight is not only to see if you like flying, but to check your instructors demeanor in the air. You don’t have to settle on the first place or instructor you meet. The important thing is to follow your dreams. You don’t want to look back in 10 or 20 years and say “I wish....”
@stewartw.91513 жыл бұрын
It can be totally intuitive once you are fully trained and familiar with your aircraft. Getting to that stage is not so easy, or cheap, but well worth it and in fact an enjoyable learning experience!

The Rocket is RV based? More engine? That’s some amazing flying. You guys are locked in. Your guardian angel seems to be annoyed at your fun though... she keeps yelling at you.😏
@WheelsInTheSky3 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, the Harmon Rocket is Based on the RV4, with modifications. The F1 Rocket is a kit that may still be available from Team Rocket. Although I don’t believe it’s a complete kit.. I think you have to still go to Vans for parts. They’re cool looking planes. The 2 extra cylinders give you a bit more climb performance and a little more speed than an RV8. Of course, the two extra cylinders takes away the cargo space that an RV8 has. Also, if you choose to insure, you’ll have to pay more. I think it’s the name that scares insurance companies.. maybe if it were called a Butterfly, the insurance would be cheaper. Yeah, sometimes I remember to turn “Betty” off. I only really hear her some of the time. But when I play back the video, she’s a lot more noticeable. Thanks for your comments and for watching.
@colinwallace52863 жыл бұрын
@@WheelsInTheSky My wife’s cousin built an RV8A. I thought he mentioned to me once about the rocket’s origins. Thanks for the comeback. I just may get out your way, I’ve been running all over the country lately looking for a back country plane. I’ll certainly let you know if I get anywhere close to your place.

Very nice video! Thanks for sharing. I used to to aerobatics in 7KCAB and Pitts and am curious if you guys are in chutes during this. It's been so long I don't know if the regs require them anymore. Excellent video!...

Hi Mustangsandwich. That’s a good point. Can’t speak for the other guys, but I bought a seat pack chute shortly after I bought my plane. I don’t really like wearing it, kinda restricts movement, but I do it anyway.. I just leave it in my seat and slip into it before strapping in. I also have a 30’ static line attached. I don’t like those either, but I considered the pros and cons and hooked it up Thanks for your comments!

Hi ClearOfClouds. Thanks for the comments. I trained civilian but then went in the USAF for 8 years. Then flew with the airlines for 29 years. Retired now and really enjoy flying with my friends. @Latrina_Bidet_IRS_Enforcer. Yeah, I’m so upset with our economy. Everything seems to cost double what it should. Maybe drop everything but liability, to reduce your premium. Perhaps not a great idea, but it’s better than not flying. I think.

@WheelsInTheSky3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bethelion. Thanks. you know, I was thinking it would be a cool video to talk about cameras at some point. But right now, I’m such a newbie at this stuff. I’m just experimenting around trying to make something work. On this video, my main camera was an Insta360 mounted just above and behind my backseat (my seat happens to be removed right now). It captures a 360 deg. video and then in editing you choose the view you want. It’s a nice small camera and I like the way it mounts. But, I’ve had the worse time communicating with the Chinese company that makes and sells it. Also, as soon as I put an sd card in it, I couldn’t get it to release it. So, bran new camera and I had to return at my own expense for repair. Frustrating trying to communicate with Chinese, even though they speak broken English. So my new GoPro Max arrived yesterday. I’ll be testing it shortly. My plan is to mount the GoPro Black inside where I had the Insta360 and when I get my Insta back I’ll put it out on the wing. Before I sent it back, I did a short test with the Insta360 on a 4 1/2’ boom on my left wing tip. A fun camera test. Three of us found a Super Cub to join up on and do a video of the Super Cub. If you’re interested in the view I got, I can show you how I mounted the boom on my wingtip. I’ll put that video up shortly.

Wow! That was beautiful. In the back of my mind I had two thoughts... WIRE and Engine Out (do I have enough with me to survive out here till help comes?)
@WheelsInTheSky3 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig. Both good points, plus large birds. . No wires in that particular area.. But that’s always a concern and you have to be on the look out. As far as engine out. Speed is life as they say. If you trade speed for altitude, your effective altitude is much higher than the low altitude you’re flying. So, zoom, boost pump on, pull prop lever back for better glide, switch tanks. Find a dirt road or field or jump out. I wear a chute and use a ripcord. But, you’re right, in the back of your mind you have to constantly be weighing risk and reward and what you’re going to do about it. We discuss it as a group and think about it individually. We also do simulated engine fails at low alt. Also, I only fly low with a wingman, who assists with procedures and calls out potential landing zones. He then orbits and calls in rescue. We carry the basics on us and the camping gear in the back. I do think having a wingman for mutual support is one of the most important things you can do.. We could talk about that for a long time. Anyway, I’m glad you brought it up. It’s all fun and games till it’s not, right! Thanks for watching.

Hi JMP.28B Apparently these new cameras have amazing internal image stabilization. Even with the camera bouncing all around, the picture comes out pretty good. I have the camera mounted 4.5 feet in front of my wing tip.

Dumb question, but why are you guys able to use a call sign on the radio instead of your reg? That was thrilling to watch.
@WheelsInTheSky3 жыл бұрын
Hi RV guy. Actually anybody can do it. Just put it on your flight plan. We do it without a flight plan to, when talking to atc, we give them N number but tell them we’re using “Shark Bite” flight. I know we’re not in the military any more, we’re just old guys now reminiscing how we use to do it. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.

Awesome video! Just a quick question: is there a certain process you have to go through to use the “Hawk” callsign? Or do you just pick one and use it for your own identification? Thanks and happy flying
@WheelsInTheSky3 жыл бұрын
Hi Holden. There’s a place to put it on your flight plan, if you filed one. If you’re talking to ATC you can give them your tail number and then just tell him you’re operating as “Rocket Flight” or what ever. Most the time, in our local area we just do it. It kinda worked out where each guy has a particular call sign that’s used if he’s leading the flight. It’s easy enough for anyone to find out who we are. Probably not the FAA’s approved solution. I’ll ask them sometime. The thing is, we’re all ex-military, and we tend to do things the way we used to. Of course back then, the Air Force was a legal entity for keeping track of who’s who. Thanks for watching!
