@Soldier Of God Why would you be looking for sporty in this segment? these are executive cruisers..... if you truly want driving dynamics, you would go for the smaller model which is much more sporty, especially the coupes. It makes no sense. I would be wanting something comfortable, capable with a nice design. BMW interior design looks so lazy, its the same across the range and less tech for the same money.

I'm about to buy either the E450 and 540i. So far I'm leaning towards the BMW. The Merc is stunning, but several things stand out for me. 1) HK sound system in BMW is better than the Burmester that comes with the premium package in the Merc. 2) iDrive is a lot more familiar and easier for me to use. I've had BMWs before, so that's probably why, but I am not a fan of the infotainment system in the Merc. However, the digital displays in the Merc are stunning. 3) Leather dashboard is a $1900 option in the BMW, but in the Merc, you have to get the $4900 designo leather package to get a leather dashboard. Plus, leather seats come standard in the BMW, they're a $1600 option in the Merc. A lot of people will say BMW drives and performs better, and I suppose this could be true, but honestly, when I took them for a test drive, I really couldn't tell. This was probably because of the roads I was driving on. Finally, both dealers are willing to give me a nice discount off of MSRP, but BMW can do better simply because of all the loyalty discounts I'm eligible for. I'm basically getting more car for the money if I go with BMW.

You can definitely notice the unsettled ride and extra road noise on the 5 Series, whilst the interior just doesn't look and feel as special as the Merc's. I know which one I would rather be driving on a long motorway cruise, especially given the state of UK roads!

Also the 5-series negotiates the moose test easily at 80km/h while the E-class can barely do 78km/h without problems. So the 5-series handles better and you can turn off the ESC (DSC) in the 5-series which you cannot do in the E-class.

It's part of the whole concept of the 5 series to give just a little bit more information to the driver about what's going on outside. Therefore, you get more feedback from the steering wheel, a bit stiffer ride and a little bit more noise. It's brilliant business-sedan, but it's still a drivers car. The E-class puts you on clouds, keeps everything from the outside on the outside. It's two different philosophies. This continues on the interieur and overall ergonomics. The 5 series simply has perfect ergonmics, everything is where you think it would be. The E-class, in direct comparison, is a pure nightmare. All those menues and different kinds to use any functions of the car.. Of course you will get used to it. At least a little. I know a lot of die-hard E-class-drivers that envy my iDrive, because even they can use that system better than their Mercedes Comand-System.

Some people like to have their seats lowest as possible. If I set the seating position highest as possible, my head is about to touch the ceiling, but I prefer it to be low, gives me sportier feeling. So I set it lowest as possible.

Gentlemen, a great video from a good car magazine, however, may I mention a couple of points of criticism without in any way wanting to detract from the time and effort you've put into making this useful video ? At multiple moments it's extremely difficult; at times (almost) impossible, to understand what (especially) the gentleman with the glasses and dark pullover is saying. When both of you are talking together in a vehicle, frequently over each other, it's then also difficult to catch everything being said. The reasons for this are multiple, and in my humble opinion, are the following:- The man with glasses and dark pullover doesn't speak clearly. Him taking more care with his articulation would automatically slow down his speech and prevent him from swallowing his words. The microphone used is either of a poor quality or not the correct type for these kinds of recordings. The background sounds (sometimes music ?), though not very loud, are totally unnecessary, lend nothing to the video, and do certainly make it more difficult to understand what is being said. I bother to write all this because you've made a worthwhile and informative video here, and I'd just love to be able to just enjoy watching and listening to it, and not have to continually replay bits of it, and sometimes still not know what was said. Yours sincerely. _______________

Without a doubt two great cars, and I'd love to be in the position of choosing one. However the infotainment in cars has now negated some of the safety systems and puts other road users at risk. Cars like the new XC 90 T6 have virtually done away with buttons / dials etc. in favour of a tablet like ICE system. The amount of time taken to scroll thru various menus to do the most mundane of tasks is frightening. Big hikes in insurance rates are on the way.

Before driving both, I was sure that I will buy the E class. After driving them, I am 100% sure that I will buy the 5 series. The main disappointment was the interior of the e class. I was feeling very unconfortable with the layout and with the general view. Bmw has a nicer place to stay in it. Also, the matrials and the finishes are not the best. Conservative or not, bmw interior is far better. Regarding the dinamics, bmw just feels faster, not sure if is but for sure is more responsive.

Benz. I'm a BMW driver and I wouldn't even consider the "new" 5 Series. The new E's details aren't appreciated. Yes, its' styling is conservative, but at closer look, the design details look like a million bucks. There's just something, almost intangible, about the sweep of the line from the headlights, up the hood, rounding the windshield and greenhouse, and down to the bottom of the trunk, that is just incredible, like a designer took 100 painstaking hours just crafting that line to perfection. And the interior is absolutely exquisite. LIke the S-class, the interior of the E makes you feel like it's an occasion, someplace special. The 5 just doesn't compare. It may drive a bit more dynamically, but not enough to overlook its shortcomings.

I've seen plenty of new E's on the road. I don't need you to tell me what my opinion should be. It's gorgeous especially in AMG trim. It's gorgeously subtle, with no need to be flashy and garish.

I agree with you. I've test driven the new 530i and 540i and Mercedes E class on the same day. When I was inside the new E class, I felt like a special person inside a really luxurious car. I pay attention to the details and materials used in the car and the new E class exceeded my expectation. For example, the outer part of the air vent sides are painted in black and gives a contrasting look (of course the vent blades itself is painted too). BMW 5 series, It just feels and looks cheap plastic. All the switches, window buttons, Mercedes is painted in chrome and New 5 series just look plain plastic. Just all these small details makes me feel the E-Class very special. And I am not sure if gesture control is useful, because when I was test driving the new 5 series, I was describing something to the dealer and the volume raised up an down all of sudden. Moreover, BMW should make their back-up cameras to hide when they are not in use like Mercedes because the place where I live, it rains, snows all the time and as soon as it is moistened, it is no longer useful.

If you go ahead and see what I've just mentioned, you will totally agree with me. You do not like exterior and I can see your point, the new E class does not have its strong characteristics like the previous generation. Some people like it or hate it. That really depends on the preference. But, you really need to seat inside of the new E class to appreciate its high-quality interior. Everyone likes chrome / aluminium more than plastic. Everyone likes parts that are painted where you never expected them to be painted.

When you see the 5 in real life you notice the exterior changes BM have made over the old car. It's evolution rather than revolution. I think it looks great. The Mercedes looks a bit "chubby" to me. I think the previous generation E63 looked even worse though!

for 6 footers and above, 1) your knees will hit the dash on passenger side on both these cars, 2) with the seat all the way back no one can sit behind you on either of these cars ... your neck (and body) will be pointing towards the center of the car due to lack of room ... with that said I went with the X5 whereas the previous 5 had plenty of room

I simply could not understand what was being said enough to enjoy the video. The accent is not the problem, it was the background noise being so high compared to their voices. I have watched videos from this channel before, and really wanted to see this comparison, but I could not get through this one.
