Thanks Dana! Were you paddling in the Catalina Crossing this year? It's up on Facebook too at facebook.com/marty.mitchell.3139/videos/1480951565331386/ in case you want to share.

No, I didn't race this year, but my wife did, but I sure did enjoy watching the video. I watched it 3 times. I paddle over the morning of the race. I left Newport Beach 3 hours before the women started the race and almost all of them still beat me to Avalon. I made a video of the trip start to finish. I will post a link If you would like to see it.

Dana - great story and excellent work on the video and on the paddle! How did you get back? How many GoPro's? Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Thank you! I only had one GoPro, but I had four different GPS units and three different sources to contact the Coast Gaurd, and 2 of them had GPS locators inside of them. I even carry insurance to pay for my rescue if it comes to that. Many people think I am reckless for doing things like this but a lot of time and preparation goes into a trip like this, and my main focus is on safety. I even carry full wetsuits with me because the number one cause of death on a kayak is hypothermia. I am fully prepared to spend a lot of time in the water waiting to be rescued. It is funny the stuff people worry most about are the things that are the least dangerous and the stuff they give no thought to is what will kill them.

Awesome Video Marty catching the crews arrive back, what model DJI drone are you using? I use the Phantom 4. have you tried the follow me mode? Anyways..Seeing the difference cadences of each OC club is Cool, what's so funny you can see the difference of a particular crew member or Noob doing a real Oc paddle stroke VS Kayak stroke. this may put some concerns to the club or members if they happen to watch this video. may to give proper training to that particular individual. Our training coaches would go beserk !! haha . I do similar drone videos in the Bay Area NCOCA.. Keep up the Great work ! MAHALO for Sharing ;o)

Thanks for your comment HP. I use a DJI Phantom 3 Professional. Mine doesn't have the cool "follow me" features like the 4 does. I'm sure the footage comes out better when hand flown anyways. If I had collision avoidance, it would be going off all the time, as I get pretty close sometimes. I agree, cool to compare the different techniques. I'm not a paddler, so not a good judge, but I have watched enough to be able to see the differences. I checked out one of your videos (Polynesian Festival), nice work! Don't forget that your antennas should be parallel to each other, pointing up, with the plane perpendicular to the direction of the drone. Mahalo and thanks for subscribing.

Wow I assumed that you were using the follow me mode because you have such good control of the drone. It very easy for me to get confused when flying the drone because the controls reverse every time you turn around. Great job Marty!

Thank you Dana & Sherri. Not confusing when you look at the First Person View on the iPad. Everything is correct that way.
