Once again, great review AoA! Your reviews are always very thorough, detailed, and informative. The Cruze seems like a pretty solid entry in its class! I would have liked to have seen LED (or even HID) headlights upfront, but you cannot ask for everything. I really enjoy how you compare the vehicles you review to its competitors! It makes it very easy to compare vehicles that people may be cross shopping. From on car reviewer to another, keep up the great work, Alex. I cannot wait for the diesel engine to come to the U.S.

I test drove the Cruze hatchback and I noticed that it gave off a lot of heat from the engine bay, even after the engine was switched off. Is this normal? Does the 1.4T have trouble with heat in the summer?

Had the sedan version for rental few weeks ago, it is a good car overall; however, the built quality on the car I had was just appalling. The car only had 2000 miles ish, and the headlining material around the sunroof was already peeling off. The plastic trim that sits above the driver side a pillar and windshield came loose. Lastly, few pieces of the interior trim had very obvious inconsistent gaps. Oh, and the start stop was horrid, not sure if it was the Cruze or start stop system in general.
@bmw803
@bmw803 5 жыл бұрын
Strange, because my 2017 has already 32K miles and nothing falling apart yet. The only complaint is the ceiling material that is very cheap, but it's sitting solid. But most economy car have the same type of materials. It's the same shit in a Hyundai , Kia or a Corolla.

Surprised you didn't mention the Ioniq hybrid. At these prices you are right in the ballpark. The issue with the diesel is the higher fuel cost in the US. That really mutes any savings in mpg.

I agree, would have liked to have seen the Ioniq compared.

I agree that hybrid hatchbacks like the Ioniq and Prius should be included in comparisons with conventional hatchbacks. The Prius One trim is only $680 more than the automatic Cruze hatch and comes with advanced safety features, LED headlights, radar cruise, much better efficiency and much better long-term reliability.

People considering the Cruze should also consider the Chevy Volt. Same basic platform, similar price after federal and state incentives, plus advantages of being a plug-in hybrid with 53 miles of EV range.
@tjs114
@tjs114 7 жыл бұрын
I just went through the Chevy website and configured a Cruze and a Volt to make them equal. Cruze Premier A/T $29,465 without incentives or discounts. Volt Premier $41,825 without incentives or discounts. Where I live in California I can get a $1500 Clean Vehicle Rebate on the Volt *and* a $2,000 rebate from my Air Pollution Control District. That drops the Volt to $38,325. $9,000 more than the Cruze. Using my local Chevy Dealer's website; I can get $1500 Consumer Cash and $1000 Dealer discount on the Cruze described above bringing it to a purchase price of $26,965. My dealer will give me a $3500 discount on the Volt Premier with $1000 customer cash; bringing the Volt down to $33,825. $7,000 more than the Cruze. Looking at my last several years Tax returns, I would only get about $2,000 of the Federal Tax Rebate (remember, you only get at most how much you owe- there is no additional credit- no money back). So that still leaves the Volt costing $5,000 more than the Cruze. And remember that you pay sales tax on the pre-discounted prices. So the Sales tax would be calculated with the Dealer Discount, but not the Chevy rebates so, for me $3100 tax on the Volt, $2300 tax on the Cruze. The California + Air District rebates are after-the-fact as well. That leaves a closer to real purchase price of $29,265 for the Cruze and $36,925 for the Volt- $7,660 higher. I won't attempt to come up with voodoo to calculate how many miles of EV driving are required in the Volt to offset the $7,660 in price because then I'd need to come up with cost of maintenance and insurance which is difficult. Maintenance on the Volt, if you get a good one, seems to be pretty low. The Cruze would still need regular oil changes and likely brakes far sooner than the Volt. You'd also have to factor in the cost of a level 2 charger for the Volt since it takes nearly 14 hours to charge them on a 110v plug. Interior space wise, the Cruze is less 'cramped' inside in comparison to the Volt. They are both small; but because of the battery taking up so much real estate; the Volt has less cabin space especially in the rear seats. All that being said, I would consider a USED Volt instead of a USED Cruze when they become available.
@dansanger5340
@dansanger5340 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you might need to be eligible for the entire federal tax credit in order for it to make sense. There are things you can do to temporarily boost your income. For example, if you have an old 401k or traditional IRA, you can convert it to a Roth IRA. Beyond that, quite steep discounts off MSRP are available on the Volt, perhaps more than the Cruze. I can tell you about how it worked out for me. The MSRP on my Volt LT with several options was around $35.8k. A $1.5k manufacturer rebate and further dealer discounts brought it down to $29k, including delivery charge. My state charges no sales tax on EVs, so that brings it down $3k (or increases Cruze by $2k), and then subtract $7.5k for the federal tax credit, resulting in an effective price of a little under $20k.

Found a New 2018 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback with 1.6TD automatic 9spd. True North option package leather seating. $26.500. Been discounted by $6,500 or so. Seen a couple 2019 Chev Equinox 1.6 td new and used as well as the Jimmy Terrain 18’ turbo diesel between $26000 used and 39,950 New 2019. Would rather get used as the depreciation on new domestic vehicles is a kick to the teeth.

Other than poorer 0-60 time, didn't see much comparison to the Subaru Impreza hatchback. Would probably do worse on fuel economy (due to AWD) and fun factor (due to CVT). Are there areas where you think the Impreza compares well or favorably?

They really messed up by not offering a higher horsepower version. And why are you calling it a "corporate front end"? Have you not looked at a Mazda? Every single one of them are exactly the same on the front end. Edit: I have the turbo gas hatchback model, 83k miles on the odometer and averages 36.5mpg and gets 42mpg on the highway.

Do you have any plans to review Tesla Models?? Particularly with the new Model 3 expected to be released in late July?? There have been constant improvements made to the Model S since it's inception and the Model X, a disaster at first release has been cleaning up it's long list of fit and finish defects so a June or July 2017 model might be interesting to review.

I am not sure if I misunderstand your statement regarding the stop/start. Did you imply that, if I keep the AC on, then stop/start won't kick in? What if I turn on the fan, but not the AC? When GM first announced this generation of Cruze, I thought it would be my next car. But once I learn there is no way to disable stop/start, it disappeared from my shopping list.
@AAutoBuyersGuide

If the AC is on and it is hot outside, the car is less likely to to turn off the engine, however its still not possible to disable the system.

Go to Autotrader UK and look up the Cruze if you don't believe me. So yes, they do sell Cruzes in Europe. Probably the rest of Europe as well, since the Cruze was developed from a Suzuki that was being sold in the European market.

Don't ever buy GM. Various mechanical pieces are likely to break when you hit around 40000 miles. And that is the point beyond the bumper to bumper warranty. Terrible resale value. Research on the interenet. Also if you are in the market for a new car, don't watch reviews like these on youtube. They just review what can be seen with the eyes like the quality of the plastic in the interior. Most of the things in a car that matter in a car like mechanical reliability and trustworthiness of a brand cannot be seen with eyes and are not touched on by these poor youtube reviewers. Go to sites like consumeraffairs or car complaints to assess the long term reliability of a car. Watch youtube reviews only to pass the time. Don't make a decision based on these. You're going to regret it.
