Get the 2.7 you will not regret it. I believe that this is one of the smoothest and quietest running engines I have ever owned and also one of the fastest.

For its size that 2.7 is beastly I don’t put a lot of stock in exhaust noise (I’m a grown mature secure-in-my-manhood adult man) but I do enjoy when the twin turbos kick in and I look down and I’m all of a sudden going 90 and don’t even realize it. Plus it’s not killing me at the pumps

This is probably the best explanatory video of this type. I upgraded from the 2004 F150 XL 4.6 v8 to a 2013 F150 Platinum 5.0 v8. The capability of my 2013 F150 is amazing compared to my 04 which I Towed a 4600 lbs Tritoon as well as with my 2013. All of these models today are incredible, especially if you are upgrading from an older generation. I love the v8 coyote but I think that 2.7 v6 ecoboost is just plenty and a great tow vehicle too. Watch your gear ratios. I have the 3.55 which is an all around great combo.

On Freeway/Highway 23.3 MPG + Around town, you will be lucky to get 12.5 MPG because it's too fun to drive/you wont keep your foot out of it...... the sound... nice....The power... wow, pulling a hill, cruise control up and down towing a max weight trailer, your engine holds the truck/trailer back. Also, 7.7 quarts of oil, plus filter = 8 quarts on change... your engine has super deep/pan oil /engine will last & Last... My 1997 F350 460 cid crew cab has a 6 quart change...that engine is 50% larger displacement [and still going] I expect this Ford F 150 most likely will be my last bought vehicle ever... it may out last me... haha at least 30 more years... ***** It's not just about the turbos. It's about all the other supplemental garbage in addition to the turbos, and also the fact that a tiny V6 with turbos in a full size truck is a new concept that had a ton of bugs to work out, and therefore the FACT is that the EcoBoost trucks are less reliable than their V8 counterparts.

UBBERTANKER I have done a ton of research , driven all the engines , heck I had a 3/4 ton diesel before. Finally pulled the plug on a 19 2.7 if you are not towing heavily like 6k or under the 2.7 really is a little bottle rocket. It has the torque at a much lower rpm like 2700 it reaches 80% of its torque compared to the 5.0 which is well above 4k. So 95% of daily driving you are getting the peak power , fun instead of the 5.0 where you have to full throttle to reach the power. The 2.7 really is the best daily driver for someone occasionally towing lighter . I will say it still will tow circles around the old 5.3 L I have. Once you drive it , see the power , mileage if you keep your foot out of it lol you will walk away with it. Anyone questioning reliability , as long you maintain it will be reliable. Ford torture tested these engines , and if maintenance is done they are great trucks.

I test drove the 3.5L TT and I loved it and maybe I should've went with it, but I then drove a 2.7L and I wasn't able to chirp the tires, but I was overall impressed with the 0-60 time. So I ended up buying a 2019 XLT with 302A package and a rear locking differential. The color of the truck is awesome, magma red, which looks black. I absolutely love the truck! The 2.7L TT block is made out of compact graphite iron which is supposed to be a big stronger than cast iron. Another great feature on these new engines, 2.7L and 3.5L, is the port fuel injection in addition to the direct injection which helps keeps the intake valves clean. I don't plan on any upgrades to my truck just yet, other than the weathertech floor mats, bed cover and bed rug. What really nice, I don't have to worry about the body rusting, since it's aluminum. Maybe after the warranty is up, I'll add some performance upgrades. Like bigger compressor wheels for the turbo, flex fuel tune, bigger injectors, etc and get 500rwhp and 550ft-lbs of torque.

Ford has done an awesome job with the v6 engines. They really tapped into the potential of the 6 banger and are making it work for everyone from weekend warriors to construction workers. Sure, there's been some kinks with the engines and a few horror stories, but what truck doesn't have that? They all have that. The fact that Ford even offers these engines is pretty innovative. I'd love to get a 2.7 ecoboost but I just don't need it and am not in the market for it. I bought a 2016 toyota tacoma sr5 4x4 4 door short bed. It does everything phenomenally for me. Daily commuter, wheeling vehicle, hunting rig, work truck, and pulls my 6x10 trailer with the dirt bikes in it with ease. I won't need to tow or haul any more than that. But 26 mpg in a full sized pickup, that's impressive. I got 28 on the highway once in my taco, but it was short lived lol.

Had 2013 3.5 ecoboost, absolutely loved it, it’s a beast always ran it on 93 octane, have a small trailer I pull, ecoboost power is overkill in most cases and anyone doing serious long term towing I don’t recommend the eco beast. Just bought 2017 with the 5.0 coyote, love that truck, and it will hold up to long term towing, and I only need 87 octane in it. Ecoboost is a pure joy to drive, gas mileage sucks, but that because it hard to stay out of the turbos, it’s just fun to drive something that big and blow away everthing on the road, put a mpt tune on that truck and stock it will do 13’s in the 1/4 mile. Truely enjoyed my ecoboost, but long term I will stay with the 5.0 ! Just my 2cents.

I travel a lot between NE Texas and South Texas so my dog was complaining he didn't have enough room in the back seat area of my 2007 F150 so we got the 2016 lariat with as much in it as I could stand. I didn't want the 3.5 because in my research I found there were issues with coasting down the turbines without cooling when the engine shut off. So I went with the 2.7 which had very impressive performance attributes. So with 12,500 miles I'm getting 23.4 on the highway and ~16 in town. I know I drive a little fast on the freeway. If I stuck to 65mph I can get 30+. But I like pushing it. The only thing I don't like is the auto off and having to remember to bypass this every time I go somewhere. Other then that so far I'm very happy with my 2nd to last truck. Sad to say they won't give you the 2.7 in The platinum or other high end packages or id gotten that.

The 2.7 ecoboost has Direct Injection only, this means probable intake valve carbon build up problems. The 5.0 V8 has reliable, proven Multi-Port Injection, and is recommended by Ford if you tow heavy loads often, the increased price over the 2.7L, is nothing more than a deterrent by Ford from choosing it, since the V8 has to be cheaper to produce than the 2.7L, with it's twin turbo's, intercooler, direct injection, complexity, and more time and labor to assemble. The 17' 3.5L Turbo's most important upgrade is Dual Injection, the addition of Multi-Port and Direct injection should stop, or extremely decrease the carbon build up of DI alone, as well as improving power over the RPM range. It's to bad it's only available on the F-150. Hopefully dual injection will spread to all engines with DI.
@atmospheric82
@atmospheric82 8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. My 2015 Sierra DI 5.3L had so much build up after 15,000 miles that it clogged the cats and caused them to fail. Dual injection is a must. I'm trading in for the 2017 3.5L EB for that reason. Good info!

atmospheric82. Isn't it sad, that a 40,000+ dollar truck can require those kind of repairs at 15,000 miles. It's obvious auto makers are aware of DI's problems, but only a few engines have dual injection, and in auto advertisements they use DI as a selling point, well aware that the majority of buyers will take their word, without researching it themselves. They need to address this problem, or revert back to MPI. By the way, I hope you'll be happy with your new truck.

I honestly don’t even really think about the sound anymore . The 3.5 eb torque is just far superior to the 5.0 for towing , and performance especially if you do any kind of tune . I don’t think anyone can argue that the 5.0 as far as reliability is the best choice . I would argue that the ecoboost engines are getting better , and better and I have no doubt about these trucks going 200k .

I purchased an XL SCAB with the 2.7 ecoboost and an 8ft bed. I use it for work, and when I load all my equipment it just barely fits. Getting a V8 exhaust sound is not a required feature for a work truck. This truck is quiet as a passenger car when the windows are up, gets good gas mileage, and has plenty of power. Long drives are not fatiguing and I have no trouble going up steep grades when fully loaded. I do note that when the truck is fully loaded, the gas mileage goes down. You should do a video on the bed and payload options. I chose the 8Ft bed because I can load two 4 ft square pallets in the back and close the gate, keeping my gear locked under the camper top and safely out of sight. Recreational truckers may not need that kind of security and carrying capacity, but it was a real plus the first time I used it for a job. In the end, I am very happy I went with the SCAB + 8ft bed, although it is a bit of work to park sometimes. I could only find this configuration in the XL package in available inventory when I bought it.

@@avi8or63 I have a 2014 STX rwd supercrew cab with the 3.7L NA engine. Bought the truck for my business as a service truck. Plenty of power for day to day driving. I do have an aluminum cap on the bed with the cargo bins on the sides. Towing up to its 6500lb limit is ok as well. I have towed a Uhaul car carrier with a '65 Mustang on it with no problems. Driven from Dallas, Tx to VA Beach, VA and then another trip to Arkansas from VA Beach and both trips were just fine. Average mpg was 11-12 on those two trips. Driving thru the mountains in NC and TN on I-40 wasn't an issue either. Yes, the engine was singing but had no problem maintaining highway speeds. You just have to keep your foot down a little more. Town-haul mode works great in the mountains. So, to sum it up, the "bottom line" motor is no slouch. It has adequate power for light towing and plenty for normal driving. You certainly will not win any races, but it is a reliable motor. My next F150 will have the V8, though. I dont want to have to pay for premium fuel to get the max HP out of an EcoBoost. V8 recommends 87 fuel. I read another forum that someone dyno tested their 2.7 EcoBoost with 87 and 91 octane fuel and had readings of 250 HP and 300 lbs torque with 87 fuel. That is quite a power hit for 87 fuel. Anyway, enjoy the truck you have. Employ its strengths and know its limitations, and keep on truckin'.

I really hate how Ford pushed the V8s away. A naturally aspirated V8 will always be the most reliable engine in a truck (well except for the cast iron I6). My dad recently bought a new truck and had some simple requirements: V8 gas, 4x4, Vinyl floor, Regular cab, long Bed. Could not find an F150 anywhere that met these specs. Ended up getting a smoking deal on a 2016 F250, which I like better with its D60 front end and manual shift transfer case (I imagine those won't be around much longer).

I have a 2.7 ecoboost engine, v-6. On average 23.9 mpg in January and February in North FL where it is now getting cold, averages in the 30's late at night. During the summer months I was averaging 24.5 mpg driving a full size truck, but wait, it's a regular cab so that might make a slight difference (2 doors). Listening to this video I'm thinking it's the PURE gas I'm using and NOT using the usual up to 10% gas, even if it is premium. Finding the right Chevron station is ideal, I try to go with the 90% octane but if it's 89% I'm not going to sweat it. Not sure if you or anyone else sees this video after 4 years but I wanted to comment anyway. I bought my truck last year used and have not had any problems with it. It does NOT have the 10-speed transmission which alone sounds like high maintenance...why Ford on a F-150.

I'm struggling with this question as we speak. I'll be buying a new truck either in Dec or Jan, and I'm torn between going with my heart and getting the gorgeous new Raptor with the 3.5L Ecoboost as the only option, or more with my head and getting a "regular" F-150 with a V8 and customizing it (but truly never really being able to capture the uniqueness of the real deal Raptor). I don't care about the sound of the engine, at all. But I do tend to keep my vehicles for longer periods of time, and so much of what I read online is about the rock-solid reliability of a V8 vs so many questions/skepticism about the complexity and longevity of the Ecoboost (mech breakdowns of the parts, buildup of residues, etc, etc, list seems neverending). If the Ecoboost was so bad, I would think there would be overwhelming negative comments about it, but instead of overwhelming, there's just "a lot", and a lot of people who say they like their Ecoboosts. I've seen so much on both sides of the argument, that I honestly have no idea what to believe anymore. What should be an exciting time for me with this upcoming new purchase is turning out to be nothing but anxiety and I'm quickly losing my enthusiasm/dreading the whole thing. :( Help! ps. Really enjoy your channel.

If a Raptor was even an option for me I would definitely have to take it! You just won't be able to match the exclusiveness of a Raptor if you have a regular F150. As for the 3.5L EcoBoost engine found in the Raptor, that engine now has a "Dual-direct and port fuel injection system" . That is new technology that can prevent some of the carbon buildup that was found on the older model EcoBoost engines. Ford has really put that engine through its paces with all the testing that has been done on it.

We are using our trusty 2003 GMC normally aspirated V6 van with 390,000 on it (never had a single engine or transmission problem) while I determine why Ford won't participate more than $1,500 in a $4,800 repair. Was convinced I was going to replace my 2008 Yukon (276,000 miles no engine or transmission issues) with a 2018 Expedition. Guess I'll have to rethink GM. Was told it was the Wastegate actuators on BOTH turbos. When I asked why they couldn't simply replace the actuators I was told that is not standard operating at a Ford shop. We also have a 2015 F150 with the 2.7 L Ecoboost and the light came on today. Getting it checked out tomorrow. The "Swiss Watch" nature of these little engines has become very pronounced in my mind. I like v8s as much as the next guy, but with modern tech, smaller engines can do pretty amazing things now days.

Bought a ‘19 STX last year and was looking for a 3.5EB...unable to locate. Settled for the 5.0. It does fairly well towing my 6000lb travel trailer, although not as well as the 3.5EB would.

Why don't these guys ever poll Ford mechanics and ask him which engine they'd buy? They're the ones that have to fix them.

What about a diesel, I would love to see a small diesel in a 150, they could probably set one up to get 30-35 mpg.

By the way, I couldn't help but being impressed with how well you knew about everything, even if you had notes written down to glance at, and I know it was edited, but very informative without a lot of unnecessary talk.

Thank you sir.. Definitely did the research on this one, we get asked this question a lot so it was easier to just make a video to show it all. Thanks for watching!

C Smith in the plans for 2018 6 clyinder from Volvo will put out over 200 plus HP and close to 400lbs of torque Will be great for towing and fuel mileage aimed at the eco diesel in the RAM 1500

If you ask anyone except a truck salesman about towing, they will all say to only tow up to 8000lbs with a 1/2 ton. The engine might be rated to handle more, but the chassis, brakes, and suspension will not tolerate it for long.
