Direct from Honda's Press kit:
"The 2017 Civic Type R is features the most powerful engine ever offered in a Honda production vehicle in America. The Type R’s 2.0-liter 16-valve i-VTEC® DOHC direct-injected, turbocharged powerplant advances performance on multiple fronts with a peak output of 306 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. The Civic Type R is the absolute pinnacle of Civic performance, and ranks as the fastest Honda production automobile ever offered in America, with a track top speed of approximately 170 mph.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is made by Honda of America Mfg. at its Anna, Ohio engine plant using domestic and globally sourced parts. Completed engines are shipped to Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing in Swindon, England, where the Type R is manufactured. Specifically engineered for direct injection and turbocharging, with an ultra-lightweight forged steel crankshaft and forged steel connecting rods, the Type R powerplant is designed to offer maximum torque output in the mid-rpm range to provide instantly accessible power.
Offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, the high-strength gearbox offers a short-throw shift action and closely spaced ratios tailored to suit the 2.0-liter turbo’s power delivery. A driver-selectable rev-matching feature smooths high performance upshifts and downshifts, and Launch Control helps optimize off-the line traction for maximum acceleration. And to help put the power to the ground, a helical limited-slip front differential is standard.
The Civic Type R engine is Tier3 Bin125 / LEV3-ULEV125 emissions compliant. Though the Civic Type R offers impressive performance, the efficient engine and transmission, along with excellent aerodynamics and low running resistance, result in EPA fuel economy ratings1 of 22/28/25 city/highway/combined mpg."

Which is fine, he's allowed to have his opinion and express it, but I take EE's reviews to heart because of the neutrality and honesty of his reviews...also he actually provides facts rather than just opinions.

As someone who dislikes turbo noise and delay, I couldn't agree more. Thus, this is another reason the S2000 still stands out against all these turbo charged 4 cyl that are now produced to give the same driving appeal. It's zippy without the extra whine.

SpiritedxDriver most cars that have a performance version are almost like the same vehicle as the base vehicle. This one is completely different from the base civic and even the si, so I completely agree that they didn't just throw type r badge on this car they actually thought of it. To be honest when Honda came out saying they were doing this car I didn't think it could even level with the focus RS and seeing this video as one of the first actual driving video and not prototype type r I think it can top the focus RS.

Thanks for mentioning rev-hang. It's a huge problem with so many modern cars. It ruins otherwise great cars. That would be a great topic for a video since not enough people know about it or understand it.

@4G12

Loping Camshaft Unfortunately, fully complying with latest emissions regulations with absolutely zero rev hang is simply unrealistic once you understand that the reason the smooth out the throttle closing is to prevent the sudden lack of intake airflow causing a transient dip in AFR, which creates a lot of unburnt hydrocarbons.
@LysergikFuneral
@LysergikFuneral 7 жыл бұрын
You're right that is the cause, but I don't think it's the only way to solve the emissions issue. It comes across more as manufacturers either being lazy or cheap to use other solutions. It's mostly in lower to medium-end sporty cars (say, below $40k).

well deserved - love the channel. Btw EE we have the 9th generation ctr in Europe and it's more or less the same car with a bit different rear suspension setup and no blipping module - a bit more harsh than this one but still very similar in terms of the tech - they used this platform as their testing grounds for the release of this one for the us market and it surpassed the expactations - that is why you've just driven the x ctr for the us market - if their expirement failed on the 9th gen hatch you'd not be having that at all :) so gg Honda :) the us getting it is also great news for the eu market - because we will be getting lots of mods and tuning stuff for this car and it is finally exactly the same car on both continents.

"Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements" or "Radically Immature Car Enthusiasts"? This Type-R is legit. Honda's Type-R program has always been legit, and their performance engineers know their stuff. Form follows function on this new Civic Type-R and it has legitimate, performance-engineering-based reasons for its design.
@ghostassassin1107
@ghostassassin1107 7 жыл бұрын
Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. And I know the Type R is a good performer, but there are cavemen that will call it a ricer because it's a Honda. As long as I can remember everyone called a Honda a ricer. The Type R seems to be stuck with that just as the Mustang is stuck with the Cars and Coffee curse. Personally, I don't like the way the car is designed but the performance more than makes up for it.

Here is something he said in another comment :" If it's going to remain on pavement, the Type R is more fun. STI engine is too dated and doesn't pull like the R. 0-60 times won't tell the full story because AWD will shine there, but for daily use (and those who don't drop clutches regularly) the R is far more refined and drivable. If you want fun in the snow, I've never owned a car that gripped like my '14 STI. 3 LSD's makes it magical in low grip scenarios haha. Of course, as I always mention, you're limited by your tires. 62% weight up front and a helical diff will mean the Type R should be fine in the snow, especially with the right tires. I've driven my S2000 in the snow with all seasons and it did alright, LSD helps a lot."

I often lambast Honda for not having a proper RWD architecture, even for its premium brand Acura. However when they do focus on it Honda has the FWD handling characteristics down an art form, seen prior on the Prelude, Integra and obviously, Civic Type R. I cannot think of another FWD street legal car that will outhandle a Civic Type R on sale today.

Great review - even in my much more tame Civic Coupe Touring, I still have a blast with this car, and yes, even with the CVT. I think this generation of Civics have been without a doubt one of Honda's greatest releases, especially after the 9th generation Civics. I would love a Type R, but I just bought this car, and I've never driven stick either (but want to learn), and that's okay. My Civic is still very enjoyable and I wouldn't have chosen anything else for what I paid. Great job by Honda!

Seems like a great car at that power range. I'm assuming once you get to the higher, let's say 400+ whp range, it may start to torque steer and spin the front 2 tires more because of the fwd drive train?

Two things. One, you keep mentioning how much lighter it is then cars with AWD, that's not exactly fair considering the AWD systems probably weigh as much as the difference in weight. Second, love the rear wiper!!!

I knew I wasn't the only person thinking this. I would say adding in a transfer case, driveshaft, rear differential, and rear axles adds a lot more than 200-300 lbs.
@kabob21
@kabob21 6 жыл бұрын
What's your point? He's saying it's lighter because it's FWD precisely because it doesn't have extra rear-drive components weighing it down. Makes for less drivetrain losses and a better handling car on high-speed corners.

Usually because it saves space and weight. It's also a bit safer because it doesn't bypass the anti-lock system. In this case it's because the base design of the Civic 10th gen has an electronic break, and the Type-R is based on it, doing a redesign to make the car arguably worse doesn't make sense. I find it interesting that since the addition of hill-assist, in areas where manual transmissions are more popular (e.g. outside the US), ebrakes are more popular. So clearly this is one feature that is more a function of us just not being used to it yet rather than being unnecessary luxury add-on that will fall by the wayside.

Daniel Private I like it specifically because it looks like that, but only because it is functional aero. It'd be easier for me to buy this car because it comes from the factory with an aero kit that I would have ended up installing anyways. Notwithstanding I like the rear haunches above the rear wheelwells, and the roofline more so than the aero kits if we get specific to why I like the looks of the car.

I really hope this car gives Subaru the incentive to kick up the WRX STi. Specifically, bring back the hatch on the Global Platform, bigger brakes, latest rally car tech, and POWER! I mean something on the order of 400BHP at the crank. No fake blanks either. I agree those things are cheesy. I have the 2017 Impreza in Sport trim (18" wheels!) and it rocks. Yes, it has little power. It also does not roll in the corners. I get scared and back off before the car is anywhere near its limits. Obviously I'm not the type of driver who could get even 90% out of the WRX STi. Even so, it would be cool to have the king be a Subaru. Subaru Fan Boi here.

Great review! Looks like a fun car. I actually really like the styling but then again I drive a second gen Mazdaspeed 3, which most people find ugly ;). I wonder how this would compare with my modified Speed. On paper I have a lot more power and comparable weight but I do have a lot of torque steer which can unsettle the car quiet easily. Having little to no torque steer would be amazing; battling 345 (ft lbs) wheel torque can sometimes be tiresome. I wonder if adding more power to the Type R with a tune and some go fast bits would increase torque steer.

I rather Honda bring back the Integra Type R over this...and not the RSX(yes I know it is badged the Integra out of the US, but it was the downfall of the Integra) If I am blowing roughly 45k on a car, it better be able to do all year driving. Still getting an WRX STi over this and building my ITR with a Japanese engine. You should do a comparison video of this car and the Integra Type R...just saying :) your S2000 is rwd and not a bad car, but the ITR 97-01 is where it really started.

A solid, reliable, well made, thoughtfully designed, well executed assembly, good build quality, proven long term durability, reasonable price, popular, easy to work on, cheap to own & operate / the downshift rev matching is cool, and that RPM hang is very similar to the CRz engine rev drop lag I notice. Those Honda 6sp manuals are really nice, short, crisp, precise, rugged, tight..... The styling is a bit too much hype style fanboy boyracer....
