2017 Hyundai Sonata - Power Steering Issue - Fix

Her is the issue and fix to the random power steering issue. The ECM (Electronic Control Module) was replaced and here is how I got it done. Have any questions please leave it in the comments.

This video was extremely helpful in changing out my MDPS module for a used one I found on Ebay. Power steering restored and no more warning lights! For anyone who performs this repair, there are a couple of things no mentioned in video which will help. The bottom steering column bolt (14 mm) is right above break pedal connection and runs horizontal. When unplugging wires under steering column and MDPS, look for protective tabs that need to be flipped/removed that will allow you to push in tab to unplug. The hardest ones to access are the 2 on top of the MDPS module. When testing replacement MDPS, just hand tighten bracket and 2 under dash nuts. If all is good, drop steering column and tighten MDPS bracket. Next raise steering column and put 2 under dash bolts on 1/2 way to allow play in the steering column so you can get the large bolt above brake reinstalled. I had to start car and turn wheel until bolt smoothly made it thread to tighten.

I have the same issue, my MDPS will dropped out of power when I make slow turn in the parking lot, but it is intermittent. It happens once a month, but then after I turn off the engine and re-start the engine, the steering lockup problem goes away. The extended warranty is not going to work for my problem because the dealer said there was no problem when I took my 2017 Sonata to the dealership. The mechanic can’t replicate the issue after his test drive. Since it is just a warranty, not a recall, the dealership will not replace it.

Been posting on this issue since mine went out..if u have a power steering issues with these sonatas take it into service let them diagnose it and if they tell u it's the MDPS..call hundyai customer care.they extended the warranty for this issue they will check your VIN and if your car is in the system hundyai will fix this for free..have a 2016 sonata they just fixed for free with the same issue but u have to call customer care to get that claim going..and if u can have it towed to the service center..its a safety issue as well

@@92cjosh..sorry to hear that..I know the feeling..just call hundyai customer care and tell the representative your power steering went out they already know about the extended warranty it's not a recall and they will ask for your VIN# once u take the car in for service and they tell u the actual issue with the power steering then call back customer care and u can start the claim process one more thing I would suggest having the vehicle towed to the service center because u don't want to give hundyai any reason to refuse the claim and its a saftey issue as well this is how I did it and it saved me over 3gs for that repair..good luck with it and let me know how it goes

@@T-for-Tigers wow that is crazy I heard of sum other stories like yours..the power steering goes out then whe they restart the engine it's good again..its has to be the wiring or electrical and nothing is coming up on a diagnostic check🤔?..because it's gonna go eventually

Yea. It is very weird. when it happens the EPS light and traction light will be on. Then after I restart the engine, all lights disappear & steering is back to normal. So, the mechanics needs to be there before I restart the engine to witness the malfunction, and it is impossible. The only way they will know the problem and fix it is until the MDPS is completely broken, then they may do something about it.

You do not need to drop the steering column,need to be programmed after

You can reset it yourself it’s pretty easy thats if It’s still on
