I'm in Canada and I went SUV/CUV shopping for a few months, I test drove the Mazda cx3 and cx5, Honda HRV and CRV, Toyota RAV4, Acura MDX, Hyundai Santa Fe and Tucson, VW Tiguan and Golf Sportwagen, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, Ford Escape, Buick Encore, Nissan Rogue, Infinit QX50, Mitsu RVR, Subaru Forester and Outback, Audi Q3 and Mini Clubman All4. I disqualified the VWs because of their scandal and I will not be touching VW for a long time now if ever, disqualified the Q3 and X1 because of reliability, and the X1 was harshly loud in both engine and road/traffic noise - surprisingly unrefined. The RVR had a powerful engine but everything else about the vehicle was too basic. The cx3 and cx5 were fun to drive but the materials felt cheap, as did the RAV4, so they were out. The CRV felt cheap too and to make matters worse the foldable per-chair arm rests made it feel like a mini-van, so that was out. Curiously the materials in the HRV felt better but it was too anemic and not a fan of the CVT. The QX50 was very nice but too cramped and the gas mileage seemed like it would be atrocious. The MDX was great all around but being japanese, had too much of that "Transformers" or "Origami" look. In fact, all the japanese cars had japanese styling, which I don't like much. Buick Encore was anemic and too small so that was out. Santa Fe and Tucson - were great but I'm not a fan of their styling even though they are quasi-European - but mostly they seemed very conservative in styling and my sense is that they will be dated looking soon. The Nissan Rogue was a strong contender but its handling was soft and though the CVT was well executed, that along with the soft handling was too much - aside from the japanese styling. The Subaru Forester felt like a cheap plastic bathtub inside but I liked the engine's power curve, but I couldn't live with that interior. The Outback was better but overall it felt more like a grandpa mobile. The Terrain felt great to drive, solid and powerful, but I'd heard of inconsistent fit and finish problems and still not very reliable. The Ford Escape was a good driver but the interior felt too unfinished and had truck-like meat head styling elements. The Mini Clubman All4 was at the top of my list but the pricing for a well equipped one was bad - and there are still too many unreliability reports.... but it was all cut short when the new Sportage arrived. One test drive and that was it, I bought it.

+farboud farjadian It's definitely more sport oriented than the other asian brands, but not harsh at all...I daresay almost European. If you want a soft plush ride, I found the Nissan Rogue to give that.

I'm a HUGE fan of this new Sportage. For $35,000 you get 2.0T engine, AWD, Panoramic sunroof, heat and vented seats, heated steering wheel, touch screen Nav, Android Auto, backup camera, blind spot warning, and the best warranty in class. For those who don't need the extra speed from the 2.0T, for $32,700 you can opt for the 2.4 I-4 engine. Good luck finding a better car or more options for less.

And for a Kia that's way too much. Wait a year and the prices will go down to reasonable. This is probably coed like a BMW X1.

Just picked a 17' Sportage EX up for my wife yesterday as a replacement for my our 13' Tiguan. Initial impressions are a whole lot of car for the price. We were really impressed with the interior layout. I actually like the new front and overall look but that's my personal taste. I can't speak on long term, but I think many other more well established brands need to catch up after shopping around different models.

I am from Austria / Europe and I bought a Kia Sportage GT Line 3 days ago. It has a 2 litres Diesel engine with 185 hp. I think in this price segment the Sportage has the best technical features and the best style.

going with the Kia Sportage, its sporty, has a great design, and has the power to back it up, the turbo is the only reason I'm getting it over a rav 4, crv, or even the sporty Mazda, love the new Kia, I'm from Pennsylvania where awd is a must

If I were buying a new car in this segment, I would go for this, the Sportage in the SX Turbo trim. I love the design and the available convenience and safety features in the vehicle, plus I really enjoy other turbocharged cars such as my brother's Saab 9-3. I also feel that the interior is one of the better layouts in the segment, it has a very ergonomic feel to it. I've test driven or sat in every vehicle (save for the domestics) in this segment and I'd rate the Sportage on top (with the Mazda CX-5 in last place due to it's use of hard plastics for the center armrest). I'm in Massachusetts.

Great review. As a fellow gearhead I am impressed by your honest observations and descriptions. A Porsche Macan design influence with updated technical features. If they went to an 8 or 9 speed transmission the gas mileage would be very competitive. All in all, a great review, great warranty and probably something the other brands should be watching.

Here is my Kia experience. Anyone in my position has encountered the same thing from Kia. If you cannot supply them with up to date maintenance records on your vehicle they will not cover it. So for instance, if you change your own oil you're screwed. Might work if you saved all your receipts but very few people are in the habit of saving receipts of them doing their own oil changes. This ploy Kia uses is well documented if you want to look it up, I have, and it’s out there. Also my car would be covered under the SC147 recall as the symptoms of my engine seizing up (engine needs replaced) followed the exact same symptomology as those the manufacturing defect notes in the recall. The recall notice even appears on my Carfax report. Again you can find all the recall information online. The reason my car isn't part of the SC147 recall according to Kia is because it is MPI instead of GDI. All the rest of the engine is the exact same, 2.4L theta II. Kia says that because my car uses a different kind of fuel injection method that it cannot be affected by the metal filings left in the engine block which is what the SC147 recall is all about. That's totally absurd on its face but that's Kia's position. The vehicles Kia did recall was done after many government threats as well as numerous lawsuits brought by disgruntled Kia owners for which there are many. Kia's mother company, Hyundai actually recalled their vehicles for the same problem immediately when the issue was discovered. It took Kia several years later to admit to the problem and issue a recall even though they were well aware of the problem. Where was Kia's concern for people being killed due to this manufacturing defect? A car having its engine seize up on the interstate would be something that would concern most companies immediately but not Kia. Unless Kia completely changes the way it does business they will continue to cost consumers thousands of dollars for defective cars and probably end up killing people due to their own negligence. I had to argue, write emails, file complaints with various entities, etc just to get Kia to actually LOOK at my engine at no cost to me to determine the how and why of the engine failure. Kia refused to cover my car even though it is under warranty and furthermore refused to even LOOK at my car to see what caused the failure. I'm still waiting for a callback from Kia with their assessment. Kia actually agreed to take my valve cover off to take a look at my car once I complained as high up as I could to Kia. This was after several months of my car sitting dead on the Auffenberg Kia lot in Metro east St Louis. Kia actually told me I'd have to pay $1500 up front to have my engine failure looked into initially. My constant pressure on Kia finally got them to say they would take my valve cover off for no fee which costs Kia less than $50 in labor. Kia had no desire whatsoever to know what caused my engine to seize up. Their ONLY concern was to avoid any acknowledgement of any responsibility or liability. Kia already knew what caused the engine to fail. The same thing that happened to hundreds of thousands of the same engines made by Kia and Hyundai. It was the exact same problem as the Kia SC147 recall. Taking the valve cover off will not help. There was no oil leak. No oil smell. Never any indication of any problem with the valve cover. It's simply a ploy for Kia to say we looked at your engine and it's your fault. Who would trust their assessment at this point anyway? I'm out thousands of dollars I still owe on a car without a working engine. Don't you think any car maker worth a darn would want to know why one of their vehicles engines just seized up on the highway? Kia's been super lucky so far no one has died due to their negligence. Additionally a co-worker of mine had a problem with his Kia and will not buy one again either. For his Kia the car required a specific oil filter made and installed by Kia and if that was not used the engine fails. He was never told this when he purchased the vehicle. His insurance successfully sued Kia for over $7,000 for his engine failure. Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover mechanical issues. Ever wonder why your Kia never quite gets the gas mileage it was rated to get? Kia has also paid out for a class action lawsuit because they lied about the MPG of many of their models. The very MPG rating that many people base a large percentage of their purchase decision on. Yeah, Kia lied about that too but kept it hush hush. You can find the information online if you look for it. I had my car into the dealership (Auffenberg) several times before the engine failure telling them something is bad wrong with the car. The Kia service department ran every kind of computer diagnostic and could find no reason for the problems which included knocking, major loss of power, major loss of fuel economy and car dying at both idle and speed. Check engine light was always on and every sensor it said was malfunctioning was replaced and it didn't help. Unfortunately I could not leave my car with Kia. Kia wouldn't supply me with a free rental. They said it was against company policy. My step daughter was dying needing a second liver transplant as all this was going on and I couldn't be without that vehicle. With only one vehicle (other than the Kia) I wouldn't be able to get to work or my step daughter wouldn't be able to be cared for properly. I told Kia this and still they refused to get me a rental while they actually got to the root of my car problem and addressed it. Instead they said sorry to hear that, we can't find any problem with your car. They actually let me leave with a car they KNEW was dangerous and about to fail. They didn't care that my family was going through a serious medical situation with my step daughter and the car behaving as it was only increased the stress on my entire family during this time. Fortunately my step daughter got her transplant just in time and is doing ok now. Not only did Kia sell me a defective product but all this happened as our family is going through the stress of a child being deathly ill, lots of additional costs for medical related expenses and Kia was told this and didn't care. Kia added thousands of dollars to my already stressed finances by selling me a defective vehicle. But it gets even better. The Kia rep in Arizona named Steve that handles my case and many others actually told me on the phone that some of Kia's cars die early and that's just the way it is. He insisted all other car manufacturers have the same problem and also refuse to repair the vehicles leaving their customers screwed too. That's certainly not my experience nor that of anyone I know. Steve at Kia flat out told me Kia isn't going to pay and I'm out of luck because I got a bad Kia and have to eat it. That's what he said. That's Kia’s customer service that said that to me. I have to shake my head and laugh every time I call Kia and their recording says "Rated #1 in initial quality 2 years in a row!" Yeah, and dies in 78,000 miles and Kia refuses to make a full recall or honor it's warranty. You won't see Kia winning any customer service awards or vehicle longevity awards. My advice to anyone that has a Kia (ESPECIALLY if it's a 2.4L) is to trade it in and get something other than a Kia before it dies and your left paying off a car that doesn't run. I liked Kia at one time or I wouldn't have bought one. What I've found out since has opened my eyes to the quality of their vehicles and their denials of their own manufacturing defects even if it could cost lives or severely screw consumers over financially. Buying a Kia might make you think you're getting more quality for less money but it's all based upon lies and cover-ups. That is my Kia experience and it's the WORST experience I've had with any company on any level at any time in my 31 (47 - 16) years of driving cars.

Kia gets my vote: Vs Mazda: faster, more overall grip, better looking (I don't see the praise others give it), wider seats, cooled seats for here in the south, warranty, and top crash scores Vs. Ford : at least as quick, better styling, probably better handling, better warranty, features for the price, don't need the extra cargo space Vs. Honda: Better looking, faster, better handling, better warranty, more features available, don't need the cargo space, not as boring Vs Toyota: looks, faster, handling, warranty, features, interior, This thing has at least some degree of "fun" to it that all but the Mazda lack. My guess is a thicker rear sway bar and even rear wheel spacers would have this thing turning in and handling much better with no understeer. Assuming you can actually buy that.

Hi, I am in New Zealand and the KIA Sportage options, motor wise are different for us. We have the choice of a 2.0 litre 2WD in three trim levels, LX, EX ,LTD. A 2.4 litre AWD In three trim levels EX, LTD, GT and 2.0 litre diesel AWD. I didn't test drive any other cross over SUV, basically because of price and style. I personally liked the the look of the older Sportage and liked the newer model even better. Biased I suppose, but when you have to drive a car everyday, its more enjoyable if you like how it looks inside and out. My personally opinion, based on style and what you get for the price, the Sportage is way ahead of the Japanese mid SUVs. I stayed away from european cars. The Sportage is 25% cheaper than the Mazda CX-5 here or other Japanese equivalents, at the moment. I did compare the new to the old Sportage and the handling of the new one was more refined, more planted on the road and the engine and transmission management was better, compared the old one. So we bought the New Sportage.

I'm not a massive fan of the looks of this new one but I'd happily drive this over the ford/Vauxhall competition. Decent spec and really good warranty are great aspects but if they are nice to be in/good to drive then they become even more appealing. I'm fairly sure the European engine choices are completely different.

Great review! I'm getting ready to trade my 2011 KIA Sportage and have been considering the '17 SX or Escape Titanium 2.0L. I've seen a good review on the Ford, and now your extensive and entertaining review on the KIA. I have to say, based on what I've seen, I probably am headed to KIA. I liked the 3G Sportage from the start with it's bold styling and they have not abandoned that strategy with the 4G. I like cars with an 'edge' in styling, even to the point of adversely affecting utility, like the Sportage with it's really low roofline on entry. I'm not tall but I still manage to hit it getting in sometimes. But that's okay. Great cars don't have to be everything to everybody. But bottom line, I will drive them both. Because after all, it's the driving that matters.

I drive one of these from work & it's a GREAT FUTURE PROOF CAR, I don't see competitors offering the product confidence/Warranty these do. The base N/A 2 litre front-drive petrol auto model I got still has more than enough kit & is fine enough. I could knit-pick a few scratchy cabin plastics, the sometimes not so supple rebound dampening, strained uphill performance with a full load & the way it (only sometimes) 'hunts' gears in such a circumstance but really it's a non issue - you're still getting a tonne of car for the money & it has more than enough torque for city driving or the freeway. I'm ex-automotive background, used to work in a garage & my foreman actually picked one of these for his elderly mum cos they're super reliable & so easy to get in or out of - you slide across into it rather than stumble n fall into a low passenger car. If I could afford it, I'd happily shell out for a torquey diesel model with all the bells n whistles but then I'm also excited to see the #KiaStinger so here's to waiting! Also people forget about running costs of cars, so if you're buying one, research the difference in parts costs & service plans of say a CX5. That alone would push me to the Kia - I'd rather spend those savings on a holiday overseas. PS I copied n pasted this from a comment I made on another video

+Bruno TaTa If you are talking a FULLY loaded Kia compared to the Infiniti, I would do the Kia. Don't really like the look of the Infiniti but would prefer the driving dynamics of that car. I would probably pick the car for the job. For example, if I were looking to haul crap and brats, it would be a lower end Kia at a lower price than this one, a second hand fancy Kia or perhaps a second hand GLC has they become more readily available.

+MotoManTV Hi MotoMan. I live in Toronto. A big reason why I'm looking at this class is that I'm a realtor and need to ferry clients around for showings, so passenger comfort is important. I work with upscale clients, so a refined, premium feel is also a must. On a personal note, I like the sporty nature and utility offered for carrying my mountain bike/snowboard/rock climbing stuff. I'm planning on a 36mth lease. So far I've test driven this, a CX-5 and a Tucson turbo. The latter two felt under powered and had transmissions that felt weak (and noisy) when pushed or manually down shifted. The CX-5 had more steering feel than the SX, but overall had fewer features and felt a little less premium to me. I found the SX had adequate power and was fun to drive in Sport mode. It definitely had less noise and the transmission felt strong when pushed. I checked out the X1, Q3 and disco sport at the auto show and plan on driving them soon.

2017 Sportage gets my vote for design inside and out- to my eyes, best in class. When I saw it for the very first time I was horrified. I've grown to absolutely love it. Two things I wish it had - one touch up and down Windows and better gas mileage. No matter, I'll probably buy a used SX in a couple of years.

My Sportage sx gets better than rated mileage. I average 27-28. It might drop into the 26 range if I'm having too much "fun." The biggest thing for fuel economy is cruise control. Foot on the pedal is always going to drop the mileage.

Another great and super informative review! I am seriously considering this vehicle. Motoman, what would you buy if circumstances necessitated a crossover/SUV in this size? I have been looking for a fun to drive, comfortable car with a high HPoint? I know a car is a more sensible choice, but my back needs a more upright seating position.
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 8 жыл бұрын
+scott werner Tough for me to answer because if it were me, I would go with a station wagon type thing - probably a second hand E Class wagon for this kind of money. But being unbiased, it depends on three things: Where do you live, what are you going to be doing with it and how long do you want to keep it?
@scottwerner1729

+MotoManTV I would love to have a sporty wagon, but the driving position hurts my back. I live in SF Bay Area and commute1-2 hours a day, but also like to drive up the coast and enjoy some nice twisty roads. i've had two WRXs and an MX-5 in the last ten years. my current car is a Mazda 3 that pains me to drive for more than 20 minutes. the low and underpadded seat makes it tough to enjoy the nice handling. Its so bad that I actually prefer the seat in my brothers Element (which if you have ever ridden in one, you know its not exactly best of breed). I will probably have the car for 2-4 years. thanks!
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 8 жыл бұрын
+scott werner Not certain if there is an orthopedic issue going on there, but no joke, you may want to seek out a second hand Mercedes that was special ordered with the 'Orthopedic Seat' option. It was VERY rare and only people who knew about the option waited the 8 to 10 weeks to get the car built to spec. As a distance runner, I definitely appreciate that option . . . I was 'related' to an E 320 Wagon that was fitted with it and made ALL the difference in the world. Another option - purely based on seat alone, would be the Volvo. Again, I have been 'related' to those cars - in fact, grew up on them in half my formative years and can say after driving the XC90 extensively that they continue this tradition today. That said, an XC90 is a sold US$20,000 more than this car - so you would need to wait a bit for second hand values to decrease or go for a different Volvo - which would also meet the criteria you mention above. Outside of that, anything in the segment like the Kia will most likely have the same problem with the seat construction. Good discussion.

Right now, I'm trying to pick between the Kia Sportage (Either Premium or SX) or the Mazda CX5. I've test drove them both (and the Rav4, CX3, Mazda3, Civic)...Tough choice. The Sportage is a bit pricier, since it's newer, but I like the gadgets of this car.

MotoManTV that's what I'm think too. The cx5 drives like a car (I test drove it too), but I love the interior of the Kia sportage. So I have to decide which I prefer.

Test drove the Sportage and CX5, the cabin for the CX5 is just a bit too loud (all that weight reduction). The SX can be had for about 31.5 which is not bad for all the niceties you get.. and If you get that Cherry black, you can get the two tone brown interior.

Handling to the CX-5 is close but what you get beyond that with the sportage SX Turbo blows the CX-5 away. I mean that 240HP turbo and torque versus the CX-5. No competition the sportage wins. The only downfall is that the sportage is a fuel hog. With that turbo you need to use premium fuel or your mileage will take a hit.

I think BMW does a good job of using a familial interior design template that is not only distinctively BMW, but different in small ways throughout the brand's line. Going from one bmw to another of the same generation, it's easy to navigate your way through the interior and find what you want. I like how they all look similar, but different enough for you to know that it's not just some recycled interior structure that's been copy and pasted. Ford attempts the same thing, but I find it an issue that they DO seem to copy and paste their interiors. For example, I found the interior of the mustang to be too similar to the Taurus. This is an issue because they're both different cars with different purposes. On the outside, one is supposed to be a sports car, while the other is not. One handles differently than the other, even sounds different, yet when you look around while sitting in them, they share a very similar interior and I think this takes away from the experience.

I think for me (if I was shopping for a small cuv), it will be down to Jeep Renegade or the MINI Countryman. As for why I'd pick them, I got nothing beside they look cool & funky lol. As for why I'd eliminate the others, I don't like the new Sportage or the new Tuscan … design wise that is (I saw both in person as recent as this morning & I still don't like them). As for the Escape, I never liked the Escape & to he honest, I don’t like Ford's current direction. The Rav4? As you may remember my comment from the scion episodes, I'll Never ever eeeeevvvvvaaaaa (in Kat Williams voice) buy another Toyota product again As always, excellent work M!

Is the 2.4 worth considering in the Sportage or is it too weak for the weight?
@TKentT
@TKentT 7 жыл бұрын
I just bought an LX AWD with the 2.4. It is plenty of engine to accelerate onto freeway ramps, pass on two-lane roads, etc. Just don't use the Eco setting if you're looking for acceleration. In Normal or Sport it is plenty quick enough. I'm getting 25+ MPG in mixed driving in Normal, and 30MPG on long freeway trips using Eco. IMO, get the EX model if you want all the goodies, because with packages you can get essentially everything the SD offers except the turbo and 19" wheels. You'll save money up front and save more gas money over its lifetime.

This Kia SX T, the Audi Q3 and the RAV4 Hybrid have been on my radar for the past several months. Coming out of the Camry Hybrid in July (I am also thinking Infiniti QX30 but question MB GLA reliability as much of the Infiniti is related) I do like the Hybrid MPG and see that the SX T AWD only gets 21 mpg combined has me worried that when Gas prices go up, as they are beginning to now, I would be stuck with a gas hog. You didn't really address the mpg for the SXT. What are your thoughts?

As the owner of an SX turbo, I can tell you that gas mileage is among the worse of its class. Gas mileage however was not a priority for me so I went in with both eyes open on my purchase.

My mileage is better than the rating. I average 26-28 depending on how much I'm having fun. Heavy city driving it drops off to 20-22. Pure highway I get as high as 29-31. Cruise control use is important for non stop and go city driving. Also use of sport mode will drastically reduce mileage.

I'm currently a fan and of the new suzuki vitara, in two tone paint it's like a baby range rover sport. Also the Renault cactus is a marmite car, but the cactus I'd the only car I've got from hatred to love, once I got what it was about. The cactus is probably the car the does cheap interior very well, much more than the some of its parts.

No the cactus, it's only nice in certain colour combos, and with the class roof. Not my kind of car at all, but I seen a black one with red accents that looked really nice, so started looking into them and the philosophy of less is more, and everything for a purpose really grabbed me. Grabbed me enough to go my local dealers. When I got Inside one i was amazed how nice it was, given the trim is cheap, like very cheap, but done is a good way, a very good way. Also owning a Coupe, the cactus doors was so light and short, they felt like paper, and made mine feel like bank volt doors. It's a good car. Tho for a slight bit more you can get the suzuki vitara, which has the looks of a baby rang rover sport, and a better interior (than the cactus), so as much as I like the cactus I think the thinking money is on the 2wd mid spec vitara at around £17k (or wait till its 3 y/o and pay 5-6k)

+Stephen Butler while the vitara looks promising, I'm not sure whether or not in the long run it will be worth it as Suzuki is a struggling company with bad resale values and reliability records. Even Citroen is more reliable in my experience. Also the cactus is much more innovative with its air bump door panels and ceiling mounted airbag. In my opinion the cactus is a brilliant car like the DS models from the old days. The vitara is more of an average crossover. I guess it depends on what you want.

The AWD all handle better since the front wheels do not plow as much, and they'll have better resale value. But you get poorer gas mileage.

The European and Canadian SX versions do have it but I read they only work on androids or if your phone has that qi that can adapt to wireless charging. The US version does not have it on any trim. Sucks cuz I'd like it. Also the European versions have Smart Parking where the US version doesn't. The car can park itself.

Mercedes is a very good example of a company who is NOT doing the whole "family resemblance" design philosophy very well at all. For starters, the design language is nice on their larger cars but it is bloated looking on Their smaller Cars. Another problem is that there is absolutely no differentiation between different models so that spotting the difference between an E class and a c class from a few parking spots away would be very hard to accomplish. I think Hyundai-Kia and FCA and Renault have definitely been doing the best in terms of incorporating signature design cues without making their cars all look the same. Greetings from Detroit.

I am very happy you have had great experiences with Kia's. My Sonata 2.0 Turbo is one of the many recalled. Even though there have been many complaints made to the dealer and Hyundai, nothing has been done to resolve the issue. I even held out hope that the recall would lead to a resolution. I was told by the Dealer that there was nothing wrong with the engine and no work needs to be done. The car get 30 MPG on the highway now when it did 38 MPG when it was new. I have paid the dealer for fuel system treatments, tried different brands of gasoline. Something is very wrong and I can't get the dealer or Hyundai to do anything. Do you have any suggestions?
