Messing with a successful and praised formula is never a good idea. Especially when that formula relates to one of the sweetest sounding six-cylinder engines on the market. Well, Porsche has messed with the formula, ditching the Cayman’s naturally aspirated six for a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
The 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S represents the absolute latest in cutting edge technology, taking advantage of turbocharging, a dual-clutch gearbox and thousands of hours of engineering work to create the next level of compact sports cars.

Thank God! Finally, no crapping on the turbo 4 cylinder. Kudos for recognizing the engineering that went into it to make it one of the best handling cars on the planet- at any price. I suspect that the BASE Cayman, with no options, 6 speed manual transmission is the answer to every Sunday morning for any adult with kids and a mortgage. Sure, high price to play, but- that Porsche crest on the hood, good chance the neighbors (all of them) won't have one, and- the pure driving pleasure... Hmmm, gotta wipe up the drool.

@@olivercullen1737 no it doesnt. Someone who has never driven one and actually revved it himself clearly. Its different to a flat 6 sound yes, but its not a bad sound. Only this month it was discovered BMW used lamborghini v10 engine sound over one of their adverts!

@@paulsz6194 some people want a sports car, not a supercar. The cayman is nice and small, Golf size, easy to park. The 718 Cayman is what the 911 used to be.

The four cylinder is a wonderful engine, much better than the old six. I love the sound of mine and the fact that it’s quieter. I think the 718 is Porsche’s best looker too, ever.

As regards the engine, yes it was much better than the six with the constant need to Rev it. However I’ve sold the car because it wasn’t reliable, it broke down four times and, because there was no protection, paint chipped off the front of the rear wheel arch and the sills. Porsche did repaint it but I had to pay for a protective plastic coating. I’d previously had a 987 which had to have about £4000 worth of work done on it at 55,000 miles, while my daughter paid £1000 for the same parts on a Focus at 95,000, so I decided it had to go and now I’m back with a Mercedes, which is far better equipped, far better value and hopefully as reliable as the previous two I had. I still have my 356, but I shan’t be buying any more Porsches, especially as I heard yesterday there are a couple of recalls, for incorrectly tightened suspension parts and possible rod failures in the six cylinder 718. It was a beautiful looking car and nice to drive, but marred by a rotten heater, excessive noise and quality issues. Sad really because I lost a lot of money.

Hard to pin point one amazing thing that stands out with these turbo variants. Just such a great balanced car full of great components and that torque filled engine is a real treat to drive, slingshotting out of corners and pulls hard at all the right spots. Incredible and stands proudly apart from anything NA.

The price is justifiable, I mean, it's a Porsche, not a shitty Subaru - you pay for the best quality that's available on the market. Small correction: Porsche doesn't support Android Auto at all. They decided against it because in their opinion it is too data-hungry concerning the user's info.

Porsche pricing for Aus and NZ is ridiculous vs the rest of the world you cant deny that. Yes, its highly premium but if you do your research you'll know that there is a significant difference in price vs the U.S, Europe and many Asian countries. For the price of this Cayman S you can buy a brand new 911 GTS from the UK or a fully optioned 911 Carrera S from the U.S. Justifiable to an extent but they're definitely overpricing it.

Bullshit, they had to go with the market and to make a gap between they 718 and 911 with their 6c turbos. Only thing to be a bit disapointed is the sound (depends on taste) but this thing is way more efficient, agile, nippy and a lot more fun of increased performance.
