Another epic video, my friend! :D I'm actually really glad that you made this video too, since the Stumpjumper FPS Comp 6Fattie might be my next bike! I've had my eye on it for a while, after having ridden my 29er all season, and then taken a ride on a friend's 650B+ setup. I'd be opting for the less expensive model just because it would take me a long time to save up for the super expensive model. But, I still think it would be a good choice, and a huge step up over my 29er Hardtail that I ride now.

Hey Alex, Next year you should go to Copper Harbor, Michigan in the summer. It is a really cool place and really far way from any other civilization and is a small place with really good riding. They even have two downhill trails there! I definitely recommend it, even though I'm only 14 I've been to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and California for mountain biking. Even with that I can honestly say Copper Harbor is the coolest place I have ever been to and some of the best riding. What really makes the place special is the atmosphere and the people there. Weird, when I went from stumpy 29 to stumpy 6fattie and I crushed literally all my usually segments and PR'd them across the board without having a solid feel for the new plus tires, the setup etc. Also I'm surprised you feel it's not as responsive to turning with the steeper head angle than the enduro. I think it's the tires, not the head angle. Plus tires are super finicky to PSI and suspension setup. I think with some more seat time and setup, you'd enjoy it more as I have. Keep up with the great vids man!
@mtbboy19938 жыл бұрын
good points. tyres can make a huge difference, I had bontrager se 4 team issue on my fuel ex 29er, then and maxxis high roller 2s on the other, the sea 4's had a knob pattern that made the steering a lot faster, but the tyre did not grip as well,it was not as sticky or as soft,and did had less open pattern on the side than high roller 2s, which resulted in me washing out on a fast corner, I run high rollers 2's on both bikes now. head angle will play have most effect on steering stability,more stable steering with slacker head angle,but fork offset bar wight stem length play a role in this too. a very steep head angle can of course effect how fast you are in rough terrain because it will give aggressive/fasts steering which can result in you steering when you did not want to steer,which makes you slower. but on these bikes it does not matter that much, if it was a xc bike with steep head angle and narrow bars it would,but as you get used to it it can be a lot easier, but it would still have a noticeable effect.
@ilirmirzo54598 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on that. In the vid tho, he states the enduro was more nimble in steering (I forgot exactly what he said but something along those lines) and he thinks it's because of the head angle. The enduro head angle is slacker, which does not make it more nimble in the steering department over the Stumpjumper which has a steeper head angle. So what he's feeling is the delay in steering From the plus size tires.
@ilirmirzo54598 жыл бұрын
Listen from 9:40. He said the enduro feels more nimble and he thinks it's due to the head angle. A steeper head angle (if chain stays are same length) will Make for a more flick able and responsive bike. Not trying to sounds like a know it all, just sharing all the things I have experienced by switching over to plus tires after years of riding and racing "regular" sized tires. There's a lot these tires do that makes the suspension feel off or the steering etc. Took me a solid month to really dial my plus bike down to understand the new tires since they also play a role in "tire suspension". Everyone said low psi and normal suspension settings. I found higher psi (20 psi range) with suspension setup for someone slightly lighter than myself but used bigger volume spacers to be key to get the most out of it

Brother, at 11:57 you said exactly what I was looking for - "We had a 10 mile climb up to the trail". That is now my main need ( Im now in my 60's, and damn, Im learning that you actually slow down on the uphills!- fuck ) I have a 10 mile - gravel road that goes from 2k to 4.7K in elevation. I just need the E for a half power assist. Once I tackle that hill I will turn the E-off, as then I jump one one of many single tracks and just fly home!! Its cake everyday! What would you estimate the range of a continuous uphill grade on a gravel road, and would that just fry the motor? Thanks? Great review.

Cool little comparison. I would say more comp would be needed to be able to get a clearer picture, simply because there are so many factors that affect speed on a ride on different days. But I like this basic comparison, and it makes sense to me that the Enduro would wallop the chunk just a little better. However I do have to say that plus tires can make a pretty huge difference on downhills. I've been riding a Pivot Mach 429c for a couple of years now, and just got a Trek Stache 9.6 29+, and even though the Stache is a hardtail, it definitely feels more confident on downhill rips than the Pivot. This is down to lots of factors that combine to give it that confidence of course (Stache is a bit slacker, has a dropper post, and has a burlier fork), but the 29+ tires have so much grip, and feel so stable that it really makes a huge, huge difference. Of course it's a little easier to compare a full suss to another full suss than it is a full suss to a hardtail, and I'll have to get quite a few rides under my belt with the Stache before I can genuinely go for a realistic Strava segment comparison. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the vid man, keep 'em comin'! Love it!

Hey Alex. Great Video, I really liked the comparison aspect. Please do more of these. One thing I want to note: It is pretty difficult to compare Strava times. Without heart rate it is pretty tough to compare uphill times, because sometimes you just don't push as hard and even 5 bps make a difference on a 20min uphill ride. Also sometimes you just have a better day, better legs, weather is different and stuff like that. I'm just saying that because it seemed like you judged the bike a bit by the times (like the tires that you think slowed you down in the uphill section which I can't really believe). Other than that I think it was a great comparison, I also liked the strava aspect, just not the conclusion :). Btw sick time on the DH - 4/564 is not bad at all.
@MrCaiofern8 жыл бұрын
there is one thing: you are more used riding your Enduro... so you should get used to the stumpy fatty , ride it more times and then post the results again to check the diference. And please, do it making more vids like this one, it was great, wish I can one day ride this trail.
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
You are totally right, there was no way to do a 100% accurate comparison as I have countless hours on my Enduro and this was my first ride on the Stumpy, but the commentary during the ride I think was still worth while as I can immediately tell the difference in ride feel.
@MrCaiofern8 жыл бұрын
lol, Your vid is a blast and I do consider what you said.... for three months I have passed in front of the store and watched both bikes and have had this issue about what should I get. Dude ,I am holding the money in my hand but can't decide. Actually, the stumpy I am thinking about is the STUMPJUMPER FSR COMP 29. I am considering a Trek Fuel EX 7 29 too. It took me years to save this amount of money and I don't want to make the wrong decision. Thanks. Cheers!!!
@mtbboy19938 жыл бұрын
Test out the fuel ex before buying, I don't know about the 2016-2017 models, but 2014-2015 are too flexible, the frame touches the tyre when riding berms or lading jumps badly. but with the stock bontrager duster wheels it was worse because the wheels were too flexible,nipples were junk. I am 75kg with all gear on here is a review of my fuel ex 7 29e. wp.me/p60aTF-aK But those newer bikes got boost hub spacing, which mine does not have, the boost spacing allow bike makers to make stiffer frames, but I don't know how stiff the new trek bikes are. you should really test the bike out in the woods,and do some flex tests, with all your gear on, to test if it its too flexy or not. watch out for the cheaper trek models, some of them got awful components, you can read more about this in my review. I have not tested the newer or high end bikes, but one thing is for sure I will build my own bikes from now on. I have never tried any specialized bikes, so I can't comment on them.
@MrCaiofern8 жыл бұрын
wow, that link is very helpful, thank you for the advise , I will certainly consider that. For coincidence I am 75kg with all gear too. Here where I live there isn't a way to do a test drive on the bikes so I must rely on people's experience and opinions.
@mtbboy19938 жыл бұрын
just few store demo bikes in Norway,and some demo day at bikeparks, at trysil bikepark brands like canyon come, but thats once a year but so to really test out those bikes i have to travel faraway, and plan long ahead,and still note be able to test them all. but there is no place where you can test many bikes at the same week. so far i found a store demoing YT,one that demo Santa Cruz, one that demo trek. there aren't to many stores that have huge stock like you see in those us stores. but getting rental bikes from bike parks is not that great, they usually got only lowest base model.

Killer video, man. Subscribed. I've been on Enduro's since the year 2000. I switched over to the Stumpy 6Fattie in 2016. Just an incredible bike. I can't help but wonder if you had more time on the Stumpy if you'd close the gap on some of the Enduro times. I think they do ride a bit different. The 6Fattie you do have to turn the bars more and lean it over more... But this is THE best comparison I've seen to date. Another thing I've noticed which isn't reflected in times is my stumpy is much more nimble in tight switchbacks. Maybe it's just me though. I enjoyed your enthusiasm as much as the awesome video and enviable bike handling skills. Keep 'em coming...

It's not geeky to know geometry, at least how it functions for the type of riding you are doing. I've learned the basics of geometry and ridden bikes with almost exactly the same Geometry, but felt totally different. It's just a good starting place to guide us towards the type of riding. Stem length and bar width have definitely made the difference for me as far as a comfortable and stable cockpit. I learned really quickly that I was going to have a hard time keeping up with my friends going downhill on a 68' head angle OTB haha.

Hello Alex, I heard you say at the end that you would go with the stump jumper now that the enduro elite is up to 170mm travel? Is that too much travel for your liking? I have a cannondale trigger and the rear shock is the fox dyad rt2 dual shock with climb mode at 80mm and open flow at 140mm for downhill. I happen to love it and debating if more travel would be even better. Are you familiar? Lastly, I've been following you guys and enjoying the redemption videos as well as the others, I've followed your videos with the shoulder rehab. Now imagine if your shoulder was your neck. That's what happened to me, fractured my facet joint C6 in 2 spots 3 years ago. No lingering effects Thank God. So I know what you kind of went through. Nice job putting this vid together! Which one would you say you were having more FUN on? I just got a carbon 6Fattie a couple months ago after being on a alum 26" hardtail since 2005. I'm wondering how much better the Ohlins setup is than the Rock Shox or Fox versions. After several rides I wanted some easier rolling tires so I put on Schwalbe 2.8 Rocket Ron lites, and it's an improvement. Saved ~ 3/4 lb per tire! One thing I noticed right away was the top gear on the 6Fattie is not very fast, maybe 23, 24 mph at most.

Great review man I have the 2015 29er stumpjumper and Enduro Elite 650b, I find the Stumpy a little different to loft the front wheel due to the ergos and the Enduro is a whole different animal the stem lengths on the Enduro change it significantly I actually prefer the longer cockpit with the 45mm stem on both. Great review thanks for sharing

I have a Specialized Epic, it's an XC war machine so every climb is a joke, but I'm starting to hate the bumpy feel when I try to have fun in the descents, plus the head angle is close to 90 degrees (71 degrees in fact). Would there be a big difference between a Camber and a Stumpjumper. I mean, can the geometry of the camber make it fun on the descents, or do I need the longer travel of the Stump to have more fun. I wish I could just try those bikes like you did, sadly it's winter in Canada...
@mikem80838 жыл бұрын
First off, thanks for all the videos Alex. Great stuff. Onto the "strava" comparison of the two bikes. I agree as well as disagree on some of the things that came up through this video. First off, I agree that both bikes are awesome. To be quite honest, It's very difficult to find a "crappy" bike these days (assuming you're picking up a known brand with at least mid level components ... you know where I'm getting at). I also agree that stumpy 6fattie is going to be slower on the climbs in certain sections. Specifically, smooth sections that don't require the extra tires for grip/traction. That said, I think the 6fattie tires would actually give you an edge over loose terrain climbs and cut your time. On the DH side, I actually think your enduro will be faster due to the 29'er wheels you have on there. Specially through the smooth sections that flow really nicely. The 6fattie will help you out on the loose rocky sections. It's amazing how much of a confidence booster it is through loose rock gardens. You almost feel invincible ... lol. I think to get an accurate comparison, you would need to get similar setup bikes, same tire size and preferably, same run on the same day (back to back with maybe an hour break between ... and stick to at most a 30-45min climb and 20-30min descend so you don't gas out for the next run). Then repeat the same run the next days but switch the bikes order. Average the time and that should give you a good idea what to expect. I know ... no one in their right mind should go through such an ordeal. But there is a reason why I'm mentioning this ... READ on! :) Best way to compare a bike is get out and ride it in a familiar trail and see for yourself. I have ridden soooooo many different bikes and tried to compare geometry, time, etc. and finally came down to the following .... What bike feels best and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling when you walk by it every time you walk in and out of your garage? That's the bike you purchase .. Period! :) Thoughts? and be nice. Don't be an A-hole with your comments :P Once again, thanks in advance Alex. Your video's are awesome! even this strava comparison ;) .... Side note: How is the shoulder? I watched Seth putting your shoulder back into its' space a few times. Your face reaction!!!! Freaking AWESOME! lol

the 2016 stumpjumper is much better, it has fox 34 float elite front and rear. It's the most crazy suspension ever! It feels like your floating on a cloud

One thing I haven't seen on youtube yet is a legit review of the 2017 S works Stumpy 650b. Not sure why there hasn't yet, but this was the ONLY video that I could compare or review. thanks!
@The_Sampler7 жыл бұрын
that is indeed strange as it's a pretty popular bike. Glad I could help though! The bike was quite rad
@S_man898 жыл бұрын
awesome video man. I'm really thinking about getting this bike. one due to the fact I'm a bigger guy. the weather in western ny can change from dry to really wet. how did it feel in the climbs, and what did feel like on the flats. thanks Alex.
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
+Seth no a little sluggish on flat ground but great on the climb
@mtbboy19938 жыл бұрын
That's the tyres definitely.
@S_man898 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm thinking that when I do get around to getting a new bike I'm more than likely going to get the stumpjumper. I like it's over look and handling from all the videos I've watched. I'll check one if my local dealers and see if they have one I can test out. Thanks

Nice video! Is that a go pro? What setting are you filming at? just curious!
@jackfederski76466 жыл бұрын
off-topic, but how do you compare your original specialized stumpy to the newer bikes? I have a 2011 FSR stumpy 26". I am not going to race anyone, and my bike is in great condition because I couldn't ride for several years. Bike is old, but not used very much. I am older and not very good, so I just want a really safe trail bike. I am very slow, so I think all of the bikes are way above my level.
@Mr_RichardH8 жыл бұрын
All bike reviews should be done this way... do you think the Plus tyres contributed to that 'not-as-nimble-compared-to-your-Enduro' feel?
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
Yea, i definitely do. They were nimble, but not quite as "fun" is the best way I can say it. Does that make sense? But I definitely appreciated them in the rocks, so two edges of the same blade

great vid I'm planning on buying a new bike soon narrowed it down to a kona honzo just can't make up my mind on the plus size or not. I'm currently on a 2016 camber comp but wanting a hard tail to rip on.I live out side of Chattanooga
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
Have you ridden a plus bike yet?
@TheDan03118 жыл бұрын
Yes a specialized fuse with 3.0 tires and tubes but only for a few minutes I rode a honzo with regular size tires and really liked it tough hopefully I can demo the big honzo.
@ericramin15768 жыл бұрын
Nerd question for you Alex: were those 2.8 or 3.0 tires? I'm finding 2.8's to feel nimble and fun.

Did I hear you say the friend behind you had a pivot 429? Kinda makes me think why get all that travel, when a 4.5" was hanging with you, and only seconds slower than your enduro time. Im interested in a new bike, this vid kinda steered me back to short 29er direction.

Yup, I think this is your niche. I think your reviews are more informative and enjoyable than the more established mags. I'm trying to choose between the Bronson and the '17 Enduro. Would be interested in your take on the new Enduro with the 2.6 tires. I demoed one during Crankworx and was intrigued.
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
+pandevant hell yea man, thank you! Careful with that new enduro, they increased the travel again, so it'll be quite different from the Bronson
@pandevant8 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping for an all around bike. I want something I can do Top of the World with but still be able to manage Lost Lake without too much hassle. I've demoed both. They actually felt similar to me. I had broken ribs when riding the Enduro so didn't take it into the park.
@pandevant8 жыл бұрын
I've also ridden the new standard Stumpy. Way to sketchy with the head angle.

interesting video, unless you have one bike for trails and dh i dont see the need for more than 150 travel on a trail bike. have great fun on mine and have never thought i needed an extra 10-20 mm
@bbarker57667 жыл бұрын
I really like your reviews man! BTW I noticed that there was some differences in the elevation and length on the Strava do you have any idea to why. Maybe a section was changed or ???

2017 enduro went back to a threaded BB. I wish they would bring it back for the stumpy also.
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
I did see that, which is awesome, but not sure how I feel about the 170mm travel Lyrik up front
@mtbboy19938 жыл бұрын
awesome video as always.the stump jumper got 27,5+ so the wheels are 27.5 but that means with the tyre its actually a 29er. so the fattie should be bit faster straights and technical stuff, and on climbs and cesents,the 26&27,5 will accelerate faster,but of course weight and how much energy the rider got when testing them. yea the plus tyres will have a effect at the steering,so will get slower steering,but will of course gain alot of grip, but if you go too low on the pressure the bike might steer on its own, I tried a kid's fatbike and I am a 1,80 guy, with low psi,it was almost rideable. the only thing I trust is the time. the rest of the stats can be inaccurate,so the how fast you ridden it can't be trusted 100%. one thing I hate about using a gps based app like Strava, is that its very inaccurate, +- 10km/H the distance can be diffeerent,speed can be different,but I got really bad gps signal i think. differences, and very inaccurate mapping , I have had it good,it only looked bit similar to the actual trail by few meters inaccuracy, but only few times. but this might work better on you local trails. it almost never works properly in my area properly. but I see that you line shows quite accurate.
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
I agree, gotta take the stats with a grain of salt, as they can absolutely be off

The ultimate test s-works 29er hardtail against the Enduro with long up hill short downhill will it make up for it going up
@bullseye01128 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video Alex! I don't think the comparison between a "Stumpy" and enduro is really a comparison of those 2 bikes when you have plus size tires on one. I'm curious to see the same ride with a 27.5 Stumpy. I was trying to figure out the same thing as far as 150mm vs 160mm+ travel. I also went with the Enduro. I really like riding in the Plus Tires because they are so plush with climbing and stuff but I haven't really got a chance to go downhill yet. to me this video was more about showing the plus and minuses of a plus Tire. I really enjoyed that part. it definitely shows that it makes the ride smoother although a little slower and a little stiffer at times
@The_Sampler8 жыл бұрын
+Bullseye Fowl thanks dude! Yea, it's not a direct comparison, BUT it was still super fun and insightful for me, and hopefully you as well!

bonus video boys I have a 2015 stumpjumper carbon comp 29er and a 27.5 Enduro elite they both have their advantages I like the chainstay length on the Enduro and the lesser rake of the Stumpy the Enduro is my weapon of choice though the suspension leaves the Stumpy for dead thanks for sharing it's helped clear a few things up... been dreaming about some 26+ rims and tyres on the the 29er but cost and availability prohibitive 😕
@jvlienj8 жыл бұрын
the new stoppie is just insane want to buy it why 29er wheels to begin (got a 29er enduro right now )

Great video! Again. Too bad you couldn't of compared bikes with the same size tires. Either way great video. I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the Norco carbon sight. It's a 140mm travel bike but I put a 160mm fork on mine and I find it great but I haven't ridden many to compare it to.

I'm in the flatter Midwest, got a chance for a deal on a ''18 Enduro comp 29. I'm a novice but would 160/160 be too much for my local trails? (I don't know if I've even seen "rough" trails...) Would it be ok to ride in the "pedal" mode of the monarchrc3? Of I needed to shorten travel? Thanks for your opinion!

The enduro is just a bit too much bike for me. My preference is for the Stumpy....I am struggling though with the decision between 29er and 650b. They definitely both have their pluses and minuses. What to do? What to do?

I think I agree with you, the SJ is the better all arounder

I've only seen Seth and used his Hero Session, but from that it looked freaking amazing. I'd probably go with that plus the gimbal, especially because the gimbal is SO IMPORTANT in making the footage great.
