Well done and informative vid. You got your exercise in. When I saw that nice blue floor jack I was like this guy has patience and is showing that it can be done with vehicle included tools. Absolutely right doing it yourself is the way to go. Most shops will not take the time to torque the wheels or use the proper rotation patterns that you mentioned. Sweet garage set-up!
@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
I did it to prove it could be done! But yeah way easier with better tools!

So driver side front to rear. Passenger side is also front to rear rotation? This video could be done in 1 minute.

What about TPMS sensors?
@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
The car doesn't care where the sensors are all 4 just have to be within range. So when you rotate it's not aware which wheel is which.

My owners manual said to cross the back tires and move the fronts straight back. The forester must be different than a WRX? Do you notice more tire noise after rotating? I rotated mine at the same time I took the snow tires off and they sound noisier than I remember.
@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
+Savage Grace the stock WRX tires are super noisy! I don't know if the Forester manual says the same I've always used tire tracks recommendation and it's worked great 👍

Not sure if you watched Arrested Development, but I got some funny Lucille Bluth vibes when you mentioned the option of paying someone $100 for a tire rotation. "I mean, it’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost? Ten dollars?" Even dealers won't rob you that badly. 😂 Anyway, I liked the approach of showing it could be done using only the tools that come with the car, and like you said, you know it's being done correctly.

I've never seen that show, but I'd like to assume its a compliment! Thanks for watching man!

funny thing is I put so few miles on my car each season, I Just rotate them at the beginning of each season when the winters/summers go on. So my summers will only be rotated again next summer when I put them on after winter.

Today is tire rotation and oil change day...I might try this method just to say I did it. I wish the 2015 WRX had a "fruit loop" in the front to make it easier for the two back stands on the sides.

have a 2" lift on the SJ, that oem jack wouldn't lift the tires off the ground >.< I would need two pieces of wood stacked. Another jack you could recommend that'll give it more lift without the extra layers of wood?

Great video Chuck! I noticed the OEM lugs gets pretty nasty looking on Subi's. I put on black Gorilla lugs last weekend when I took my winter set off and the OEMs back on. Using a great floor jack, torque and impact wrench of course!

I've got a set of black lugs on the STI, I need to pick some up for the XT as well!
@jfinley31967 жыл бұрын
My OEM lugs had just under 6k miles on them are already looked rough. The standard chrome lugs from Tire Rack did OK on the winter wheels, but the wheels are Enkei black. I like the black lugs with the OEM XT wheels, I'll send you a pic via Insta.

For less than $100 extra at the time you purchase a set of 4 tires from a national chain, you can get the wheels rebalanced and rotated every 5000 miles for the life of the tires, plus blowout insurance. That's roughly $15/change. For $30 you can get a folding cross-wrench (or a breaker bar) and a basic torque wrench that will last a lifetime, and let you reset the lugnut torques to be assured they are tightened properly. A cross-wrench is better to use for loosening overly tight lugnuts and doing tire changes than the OEM wrench and will fit in the spare tire well. With those tools and a tire shop, you can finish a tire rotation without getting dirty or work up a sweat within 10 minutes max..
@therealchickentender5 жыл бұрын
Yup. That's exactly what I do. Though I don't even normally have them rotated on a schedule because I rarely put on more than 5000 between swapping between my winter and summer wheel/tire sets. The rotation happens for free at the shop. If you just go in, even not having bought tires there, I know of two chains that'll just do the swap for free regardless trying to earn your future business. For my part, their little tactic worked like a charm. :)
@bill82986 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chuck.... just used your “spare tire” technique to rotate tires on my Subaru Outback XT.... worked great ! I do have a hydaraulic floor jack and large 4 way cross wrench to speed things up. What do you think about applying a little grease to lug nut threads ?
@stanpiezuch99223 жыл бұрын
Owner's manual states "Never apply oil to the threaded parts, wheel nuts, or tapered surface of the wheel". I'm no expert but for now I assume that applies to grease too. Grease might make the nuts easier to spin on&off and initially break free, but that's only good thing while you are doing it, and could be a very bad thing while driving. I'll stick to elbow grease (or good tools to make it easier.)

Hi Chuck, loved your videos and your sign off.....since you are on the topic of tyres, would like to check with you, what in your opinion is a set of good tyres for stock 18" rims on FXT, for city driving and summer conditions throughout the year. Thanks.

@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
Honestly a cheaper set from Harbor Freight will work great!
@jfinley31967 жыл бұрын
Just make sure it will raise the car enough since the suspension to travels down as you lift the car. A "trolley" jack typically won't raise a Forester enough to get the tires off. I learned that the hard way. Go with a true floor jack that isn't a super low profile 9" lift max since the Forester starts at 8" clearance then add the suspension drop into the equation when you lift the car.

After rotating tire don't you have to reset the tpms so the car know which tire is in which location?
@ThisDoesNotCompute7 жыл бұрын
Hey Chuck, any thoughts on installing a catch can or AOS on the Forester? Apparently the intake valves can get a bit gummed up on the XTs over time from blow-by.
@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
+This Does Not Compute I've considered it for the XT and STI. I'm not sure how it'd effect warranty though. I know it has the potential to be helpful long term but it might give Subaru an easy out of something short term.

@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
XT tires are non directional, I crossed the backs when I put them on the front!
@GR8GUY547 жыл бұрын
just to be clear and get advice from someone who knows way more about the WRX then I do... my tires have "Outside" stamped and want to say they are non-directional? So fronts go to back and back in the front criss cross? or am I all fxxxed up lol
@TWRX_Chuck7 жыл бұрын
+GR8GUY54 as longas the tires are not directional (you'd see and arrow and some words telling you which way the tire is supposed to rotate when driving) you can use the same method I just used! If you have a new WRX and it came with stock tires then you should be good ✌️

Hay Chuck, new to your channel, like the info. on the FXT. Thinking about changing from Toyota to Subaru. Over the years I love Toyota’s reliability but they haven’t necessarily kept up with the “fun to drive factor!!” Any major issues at all to be concerned with the turbo engine?
