Interesting that you're mentioning this today. I replaced the front brake pads on my 2008 Sienna van about a year ago and have an intermittent light squeaking / squealing sound when backing up and maneuvering at very slow speeds. Otherwise it stops just fine with a great pedal and no other complaints. I used Toyota OEM pads. The rotors measured less than .003" runout and there was very little ridge on the rotors. I cleaned everything and installed new hardware. Also checked, cleaned and lubricated the caliper slide pins before reassembly. I'm going to pull the calipers and pads tomorrow before rotating the tires and changing the oil. Was thinking about lightly deglazing the pads before reinstalling them but maybe I'll just visit my local O'Reilly's and give your premium pads recommendation a try.
@LAactor3 жыл бұрын
Pull the caliper brackets and file down any rust under the tin hardware that the pads slide in. Lightly grease under the tin on the surface you just filed clean to block more buildup. No grease on the ears nor the top of the brake hardware. Just under. Grease on the brake piston surface and the other side on just the caliper ears. But honestly, when you said backing, it made me think your squealer is either bent or positioned incorrectly and it catches. See if switching it works. Wherever it is, it might be in the wrong spot. But, that said, light sanding of the pad and resurfacing of the rotor could remove any embedded things. Might be a very small grain of sand. And silicone paste the glide pins. In fact, pull them out and brake clean the caliper holes where the pins go and get a nylon pipe cleaner brush and really clean that out. Compressed air helps but not required. When I say grease, esp if it contacts rubber, I mean use silicone paste. Moly grease will swell and deteriorate and eat up rubber. Good luck.
@frankponte40313 жыл бұрын
Guaranteed that everything will be spotless when it goes back together. So far everything looks great though. No rust or corrosion anywhere. Stainless anti-rattle hardware properly installed. Slide pins loose and lubricated and the silicone grease originally applied to the typical areas is still present. The brake pads look like new with no uneven wear and the wear indicators were not even close to contacting the rotors. I'm going to lightly sand / deglaze the pads and re-install everything. It might have been some debris causing the squealing. Just a slight annoyance when backing out of the garage and driving very slowly.

I've serviced dozens of Toyota and Akebono would make pads for cars and PBR for their trucks (semi-metallic) We used to have squeaks on the semi-metallic brake pads, but they had much better stopping power than full ceramic brake pads since they "bit more" into the rotor. These brake pads were great if you also towed. We would used BG Stop Squeal on the pads and this would eliminate the squeal. When Toyota pads were not available for passenger cars or SUVs, I used Bosch and never had a return/replace for any issues. These are German designed but manufactured in Mexico, across the border from El Paso, TX.
@LAactor3 жыл бұрын
I see a lot of "Made in Mexico" stamped on a lot of the shims on pads. Or pads themselves sometimes because the shim is part of the pad permanently if I recall correctly in the Bosch design. Agreement on the bite of semi metallics. But the dust is a huge annoyance. However, these days the tech has improved greatly and for non tow applications I do feel some out there are able to perform better than ceramic of past years ago.

I have stuck with Toyota brake parts (2013 Sequoia), but I have not been quoted $120 for pads. I replaced the original rotors with OEM and now just rotate between the two set. When I change rotors, I have the old set turned, wash and repeat. Oh, I do all work on my vehicles, so cost is not too much an issue since there is no labor charge. The machine shop charges $15 to turn each rotor. I have not used aftermarket pads or rotors, but the OEM stuff brakes well to stop that big truck. Love my Toyota (remember that commercial).

I haven’t had any squeaking, but they came with absolutely no additional hardware, no backing plates springs pins nothing. They are absolutely terrible compared to aftermarket, way too soft, dusty, already worn down about an 1/8” I say go with aftermarket, the last one’s I had were from auto zone and I put 20k miles on 3/16” of what was left on the pad. Everything else apart from lubricants and oils are oem.

Toyota with YZZ parts number are really aftermarket in Toyota box. Not original that come from factory when new. They are usually ceramic, the original is semimetallic. I prefer brake pads from Bosch, Bendix, Napa gold, Wagner, TRW, Akebono. They are cheaper and usually within 20% original pads performance. Brake has rafting cold-not coefficient friction. GG is the best, GF, FF, FE, ...EE (the weakest).

There is a name for paying $120 for a set of front brake pads. It is called waste. A set of front ceramic pads (both sides) with stainless hardware for a 2000 Ford Expedition from Rock Auto costs $18. Except for very expensive vehicles, auto dealers make their profit on repairs, more than on sales. Selling victims parts they don't need is routine for auto dealers and crooked repair shops. Be aware that semi metallic brake pads grip the rotors better than ceramic pads do. That won't matter on that Toyota with dual piston brake calipers. But it might on an overloaded vehicle coming down some steep mountain slope.

Brakes turn Kinetic energy into heat, the rotor absorbs the heat and dissipates it over time. The mass of the rotor is important, more mass more ability to absorb heat. When you turn a rotor you decrease it’s mass, and decrease it’s ability to absorb heat, and increase the chance of warping the rotor. It’s foolish since most rotors are reasonably priced and the cost and effort to cut them doesn’t pay. If they warped before cutting they will absolutely do it after.
