2017 Yamaha XSR 900 Review - It's been ages since I rode a Yamaha and I've been itching to try one of their triple powered machines for a while. So huge thanks to Sam at Brian Gray Powerbiking in High Wycombe for letting me ride the MT09 based, but retro styled, XSR 900. Stay tuned to see what I thought!

My wife though I was having too much fun on bikes, she didn't like pillion. Surprised me when on her 40th she said she was doing her bike test, which she passed first time. She then bought a Street Triple. Now have bluetooth intercoms as well. We can ride and talk and go everywhere together now......... yey!!

Great review, partly on your advice I bought a second hand one in the same colour as you tested. My main gripe is no LED headlight but Hoglights in my hometown Brisbane have a great drop in plug and ride light. There is a lot of info available on the dash but unfortunately there is no handlebar mounted control to access a lot of it. However, I love the tripmeter which automatically comes on when the fuel hits reserve, a very handy feature. I was initially concerned about the fuel range but I’ve managed 315 kms before filling up.

Thank you for this great review. You mentioned the Ducati Scrambler in comparision and I think due to the date of the review you meant the 800. I own the 1100 Scrambler which I love and I think the XSR could be a precious second bike in my garage because of its japanese quality and its three cylinder motor.

What sacrilege TMF! Comparing the XSR900 to the Ducati Scrambler. For one, the XSR has got way more power (and looks better... I know looks are subjective). Seriously though, I was wondering when you'd review this bike. I've had mine for a few months now (for my daily commute) and quite honestly it's all the bike most would want. A couple of things you didn't mention. The mirrors are a bit useless for the tall and broad of shoulder. I'm 6ft2 and broad shouldered. All I could see in the mirrors were my elbows. Also, if you're as heavy as I am, you quickly find the rear suspension isn't damped enough. I got the accessory ohlins shock available as an accessory from Yamaha to fix this. Also, the Yamaha Sports screen solves the buffeting issues as speed. Right I better shut up now...😉. I could go on and on about this bike.

Lovely machine Onyeka - I did say it was way better than the Ducati Scrambler didn't I! ....and I think I may have let it slip that I even preferred the ride to my Street Triple....now that's sacrilege surely!!

Thanks for speaking up Onyeka. I'm looking hard at the XSR. In a lot of these reviews, people don't usually give their general dimensions as riders and how they feel. I'm 6'1" and pretty broad shouldered so I very much appreciate your comment about the mirrors (although it seems most people swap out the stock mirrors on most bikes anyways). If you don't mind, what weight range are we talking about in regards to the ohlins? Also, at your height, are you sitting more upright and not feeling the ride in your shoulders?

I think Yamaha were very brave to clear the decks of the old naked mid range bikes (they were pretty boring) and bring out the new range, the new triples are very good. Now they must be selling truck loads great forward thinking by the Yamaha boffins!!! great review must try one of these.................so many great bikes we are so lucky indeed!

Great review. I've had one since August 2016 and have done 10000km on it. Did a 3500km 9 day tour on it. Was very good, seat is hard but 400km days were a dream on the seat. I've also started commuting on it (due to having to sell my commuter bike) and found the bike is nice and nimble in traffic and B mode is perfect for that situation. STD and A modes are for weekend blats :)

Looks like a modern twist on the old 1300xjr, it looks sweet in yellow if you've seen it? infact the first bike I ever went on the back of was my dad's 1978 rd250 in yellow..So I've got a little place in my heart for yamahas, which is why I own one I guess. mind you its nearly 20 years old but going strong. nice review👍

Nice review - opened my eyes to this bike. Love the 'dash', and the paint job - reminiscent of the RD250LC / RD350LC, which I'm sure is deliberate, but nicely done as it's not copying it exactly. They also do an Abarth grey / red combo paint job, which just happens to exactly match my car (an Abarth 595 in grey / red). Don't think I'll be tempted over a new Street Triple when it's time to change, but I'll pay more attention at the MCN show. btw, you were braver on those roads than I would have been, perhaps they looked worse on camera than they were. Cheers.

5:17 You claim it needs another gear? Feels a bit busy? That shows 60mph in 6th gear at 4,000rpm. That is absolutely par for the course and the 2020 versions at least will hit 150mph at redline in 6th gear. Your review didn't even mention the clock is a hybrid TFT/LCD? Even in direct sunlight in Australia my clock is clear as a TFT. You miss everything. The mirrors are alloy rotating on stainless gimbals. A mode is the only mode, traction must always be disabled, ABS must always be disabled, the suspension is utterly perfect for the road. It IS the ultimate UJM replicated with today's technology in every way. Even the MT-09 isn't even close to one of these. @@TheMissendenFlyer

Great review! Wife willing, this may be my next bike. I've been looking for a bike with the performance of a naked with styling of a more traditional standard. Its a bike that needs customised, which when eventually finished they look better than most bikes on the road. Also that is not exhaust corrosion just muck. TheMissendenFlyer then we have a lot in common. I have a model of a P51 Mustang on my desk at work, a plane that you might say was the Tuono of its day! Hmmm, maybe that's why I love the Tuono so much! All the best TMF!

The Mustang is my favourite of all aircraft and I'm sitting in front of a 1:32nd scale model of a "D" that flew from Hunsdon in the UK during the second world war as I type! Love the sound of a Merlin in a 'Stang!

Nice review. Thanks.Did you mention which TC mode you were using? I leave mine in TC 1. I agree STD mode can be a little jerky but not A which is just on/off or B which feels more like a carb' motor than injector. I've had my XSR900 since May 2016 but have done 7000km or so - love it!

Love my MT09 tracer, makes me smile every time I ride it, it's the smooth torque delivery that gets me, no need to ring the bikes neck but if you do it's smooth. I haven't tried the MT10 because I would end up buying one and then kill myself

What's up with the parking on the road where the lane is only wide enough for driving or parking but no both and you have to drive on the on coming lane? With all that available land you'd think they'll make some space for parking.

Well actually I came over to Canada a year or so back for a 3-5 year spell and that's what I was going to get but ended up with a Versys 1000 LT. Missing those roads back in the UK that bend and twist, oh and the fact that you can ride a bike at this time of year. Minus 18 this morning and we had a spell where it was minus 30 for a few weeks.

That off-centre clock and weird filler cap/surround affair would give me the arsehole! I mean...why? It doesn't add anything to the visual appeal of the bike, or the functionality. It's like Yamaha are trying to be quirky for the sake of it. It just doesn't work.

I'm jumping between the MT09 and the XSR 900. I can't test ride any as I am still on my A2, but I am doing my full test the minute a riding center get back to me (Noice Covid... real Noice). From my findings, the MT09 is more aggressive and also lacks tech. The XSR 900 has the same power as the MT09 but a more linear throttle response. The price for a decent one is similar, but insurance is MORE for the XSR which suprised me.

Like many modern bikes there's just too much plumbing, pipework and sharp angles to make it a looker. And it's not really a Scrambler competitor at 115hp vs 75. I like the instruments though and the engine, but at 830mm seat height it's a deal breaker for me so I'll stick to the Scrambler TY, which actually IMHo is a far better looking bike (but then I would say that)

Hi TMF. I had an 2014 MT07 and a 2015 MT09 Tracer in the past, and both, in my opinion had a fuelling problem/glitch. I loved the Tracer, but it just didn't fill me with confidence, as the throttle was so unpredictable. Looks like they still haven't sorted it. What i mean by that is, that in a corner, trying to keep a constant speed, it felt as though it was hunting. It did help a little in hooligan mode on the Tracer, but got annoying. I do like the look of the MT range, even now, but wouldn't buy another one. I know these things can be sorted with power commanders etc, but you shouldn't have to pay extra, to get a bike to run smoothly. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this, or any other Yamaha riders. Has it been sorted? Cheers 🍻
