2017 Yamaha XSR700 Review
Around about a year ago I rode the Yamaha XSR900 and somewhat fell in love with the MT-09 based retro triple - I even said I thought I preferred it to my Street Triple. I was very interested therefore to try it's slightly smaller twin cylinder powered brother, the no less gorgeous looking twin cylinder bike based on the highly successful MT-07. Stay tuned to see how I got on....

Take it from me.... this bike is brilliant! Its so much fun. I bought mine new in january of this year and havent stopped customizing it since. You can do and change so much to make yours unique. But even left as stock its still great. Its a real head turner. The power delivery is always there. The clutch is nice and light and the brakes are enough for the weight/power of the bike. I live in the south of the Netherlands where we have plenty of hilly twisty roads (on the doorstep of the Ardennes) and the XSR700 just eats them up. This bike could quite easily be the first and last you ever buy as its has so much to offer. The only downside i will mention is the sound of the exhaust! Its way too quiet (for safety reasons). I swapped mine out for an Ixil SX1 full system and it sounds incredible. Not too loud but loud enough.

What makes it "ugly" is that damn radiator. On the Triumph Street Triple the radiator is really not noticeable unless you really look for it. Between the Yamaha XSR700 and the Ducati Scrambler, I think I would choose the Ducati. just saying

@@whiterabbitt2002 Agree. I think this bike is probably the best choice from a practical/ mechanical argument, but its kinda like your friend's badly dressed sister with head gear and coke bottles for glasses. Once you give her a make-over she's really something to look at.

Thanks for a great review as always. Looking forward to watch you ride the 3 cylinder XSR900 next, compare them even. Of course the 900 is more powerful but that doesn't always equate to been more fun. As to your brake comments I've read somewhere that owners change to EBC HH pads which completely changes them for the better.

Still love mine after more than a year. They have just launched it in the US so should be some interesting new accessories before long. Something of a problem is attaching any form of luggage. I usually manage with a backpack. There was a recall for wiring rubbing on the left of the headstock where it touches a clip thing. It's pretty economical - average so far is well over 60mpg in varied use.

First of all, I enjoy all your reviews and take the information as if it was coming from a specialist :) Very informative. I have been riding a 2005 Yamaha FZ6, and love the looks of it, but am looking to get a bike with more low end torque. I tried the Yamaha FZ07 (MT07) for about several minutes and felt that it was pushed by winds at highway speeds more than what I'm used to and the handle felt somewhat narrow. I have driven the 2016 XSR900, enjoyed the available power and upright seating, but the gas tank edge felt very uncomfortable while seated on the inner thighs of my 6 ' frame. I also tested a 2017 Ducati 797, but IMO felt that it needed to go fast and was not comfortable driving under 2k rpm, in traffic conditions. I also had issues getting into neutral when necessary. I never tried and look forward to trying a Triumph Street Triple 675 or newer, hoping it fits what I liked about the Ducati, XSR900. What would you recommend as your choice of motorcycle as a comfortable seating position great all-around, with power available from low through mid-range rpm? I am open to 2010 and newer models. Thanks in advance for your advice and all your great reviews.

I recently got to sit down on a lot of motorcycles. And the style of this motorcycle is by far my favorite. So much in love. I’ll have to wait a couple of years to get it. My only gripe about it is the seat hight. Little too tall for me. But I was told it couple be ajusted by about 18-20 mm which is perfect for a smaller dude like me.

About a year ago, I was wondering if I should get the XSR 900 or 700. My previous bike was a knackered Yamaha Fazer 600 from 2004 which some scrotes nicked in London. Anyhow, long story short, I plumped for the bigger machine just because I thought, in for a penny, in for a pound. 12,000 Km later, I am not disappointed. I would probably get the 700 as my first bike because it is adequate for everything, looks good, and is fun,

Great reviews and still relevant 4 years on (I've just bought an xtribute) but can we clear up one thing. You will not get blown off the bike at 100mph or even 120mph. I am going to sound very old now but when I were lad no bikes (virtually no bikes) had fairings or deflectors. They were all naked. And back in the early 80's on my GSX750 or my XT550 I had no problem at all riding at over 100mph. My GSX could just about do 140 and strangely I didn't get blown off the bike. (All in another country where it was legal of course). Maybe the air was thinner back then? Who knows?

I currently own an xsr900 and am considering trading it in for the xsr700 when they hit dealerships in April 2018. Having owned many sport bikes, I can assure you you'll be immensely happy with The 900. I got my first taste of a loud twin just before buying the 900 and honestly that sound has me hooked. I may very well be trading in my 900 just for the sound of the unbaffled 700. Haha

Hello TMF ! First things first, your reviews are absolutely spot on and very informative. Most of my doubts are cleared about this lovely machine. It would be really helpful if you could mention about the mileage and servicing cost for this bike. There are reports here in India that it's scheduled to be launched here in October / November 2018. I hear you on the Diavel tank comparison. Where the styling falls apart for me when you sit it next to something like a Monster, is the position of that headlight. It looks weirdly high up to me (same on the 900). There are definitely some other styling compromises resulting from basing it on the MT. it’s interesting that you thought it was tall. It LOOKS tall even if it’s actually of average height.

Looks beautiful, though I'm not so into its height. I prefer a slightly longer, sleeker stance. Can't stand that digital display. This kind of bike needs an old school gauge.

The spongy brakes are a problem on the MT07 too from what I've heard, the fix for it is to replace the lines with braided lines which I plan to do to my XSR next summer. That should make them a fair bit more positive feeling. Although I find the ABS on the XSR very sensitive and it can hinder aggressive riding

The new Ducati 797 might be a competitor. That’s a similar bike in that price range. The Yamaha is a nice bike.

Another good review. I might be slightly biased; I got the XSR700 as first bike in June. Love it! I agree with most points- mirrors excellent, styling "retro inspired" rather than trying too hard. I'm not a fan of bikes covered in pointed plastic and straight lines. I quickly got used to indicator switch position (little experience with others anyway). On the front brakes, mine lifted rear wheel during lessons (emergency stops), so maybe demo bike needed to bed in a bit.

I saw this bike new in a Arizona bike shop (USA) this week it was priced at $7000. That seems like a lot for a 2017 bike today 5/19/2019. Am I wrong?

Great review, I really like the look and the different options and mods that can be done are a nice touch. Do you think this bike would suit someone that's getting back on a bike after 6/7 years without one ?

I just bought this as my first bike couple of weeks ago and not only has it been a joy to ride, but it's also very easy to ride. I came from a human powered Giant Road Bike :P. Cheers from Los Angeles!

Price wise it's good value for money and is a decent looking retro. Love black mat reminds me of the Honda Rebel. Possible new starter bike too. That said I'm not a fan of that enormous radiator, kinda ruins the retro vibe for me. Thanks for the review, cheers TMF!

Enjoyed this. Very few legitimate "reviews" for the XSR700. Most are just a quick walk around with either no information and terrible music or with the dreaded robo voice. Nice job.

I prefer analog rev- and speedcounters. I find them easier to read and look nicer. Retro bikes ought to have them is my opinion. I doubt that the suspension works on worse roads if it is already firm on a good road. Don't know if I wrote everything in the right way.🤓

The XSR900 would be the only bike to temp me away from my old Street Triple, looks wise. I'd have to stick with a triple engine if I traded up so as cool as it is, the 700 wouldn't be adequate. The burning question is, would you ride it to Scotland land? Also, who the hell is down-voting this vid?

Same here. I love the bike, and your mention of the turn signal being “fiddly” is spot-on! With cold weather gloves, you’re gonna hit that horn every now and again. But no big thing-it’s a definitely a fun machine. Thx!

I love this bike. However... Totally agree on the indicator switch, how did they not notice that tiny thing. I swear 3 mm more on the button would fix it. Or move it to sit on the left hand side of that unit instead of nested with the horn.
