I believe the section at 2:20 (which is the overpass at Bunker Hill) is the widest section of the Katy Freeway. Some people have said that there are 29 total lanes there, but when I counted them from a satellite image I noticed that this figure includes auxiliary lanes, frontage lanes, and turn lanes on the frontage roads, so it's a bit overstated given how short some of those lanes are.
@AsphaltPlanet16 жыл бұрын
I agree. I tend only to count ‘through’ lanes when measuring the width of a freeway. Plus, to be honest, I try to stay away from arguments about which highway is wider/better etc. Those type of discussions are just wasted energy in my opinion.
@AsphaltPlanet14 жыл бұрын
Juan Nicolas Moreno Bustillo the 401 has more continuous through lanes than the Katy. If you include the Katy’s frontage roads (which have driveways and traffic signals) the Katy has a spot where the cross-section is wider than that of the 401.

I’m pretty familiar with the Katy Freeway. It originally was the 2nd most congested highway in the U.S.A. Then, the state decided to extend the highway into the largest freeway in the world, about 22 lanes, if I remember. But unfortunately, the problem became worse.
@shahparallawala19296 жыл бұрын
Wow the interchanges on Katy are nothing short of impressive, I also noticed how the intervals between exits/entry are well allocated preventing bottlenecks. The 401 however looks much more lively IMO, the constant separation between collectors and express as well as the onslaught of back to back interchanges makes it seem like a more complex network.
@AsphaltPlanet16 жыл бұрын
The Katy is much newer so it does benefit from a much more modern design. There are certainly a few locations on the 401 where some braided ramps would definitely improve traffic operations. Tbh, they are both great drives.

The Katy Freeway is the world's widest freeway (with 29 lanes). Some Canadians thought the 401 through Mississauga (with 22 lanes) is wider, but the Katy Freeway still holds it's title. The 50 lane toll in China doesn't count as one of the the widest highways.
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
The Katy Freeway has 14 continuous through lanes. The 401 has 18 continuous through lanes. The reason some people consider the Katy to be wider than the 401 is because the Katy is flanked by eight lanes of frontage roads that have driveways and traffic signals.
@CrystalClearWith8BE3 жыл бұрын
Asphalt Planet, okay. Let's process this. Since the 401 have 18 continuous through lanes, there are 10 local lanes and 8 express lanes. Since the Katy Freeway have 14 continuous lanes, there are 10 local lanes and 4 tolled lanes. As for service roads, they made the Katy Freeway wider than the 401 by width.
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
@@CrystalClearWith8BE right, so when a person counts the 8 frontage road lanes that don’t meet the definition of a freeway because they have driveways and traffic signals, then the Katy is the widest freeway in the world. Pretty big asterisk if you ask me.
@CrystalClearWith8BE3 жыл бұрын
The widest point of the 401 is located south of Toronto Pearson International Airport between kilometers 344 and 348 between an interchange connecting the 403 and 410, and a large interchange connecting the 427, Highway 27, Renforth Drive, and Eglinton Avenue. The widest point of the Katy Freeway is just east of an interchange near Sam Houston Tollway within I-10/US 90's miles 756 to 759.

This totally beat 401 in Canada. It’s wider, cooler, and I like how they did it all concrete and not asphalt since asphalt dosen’t last long. Concrete is also better for the environment so thats cool. The Katy freeway, will be a freeway to last.
@AsphaltPlanet16 жыл бұрын
The 401 was built with concrete too. The concrete has just been paved over because so much of the 401 was built 50 years ago. 50 years from now the Katy might be surfaced in asphalt as well.
@jonathanselevators6 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Or they will have the money to do it with carbon concrete or flexible concrete which is more environmentally friendly that regular concrete and asphalt, and concrete is the pavement of the future.
@AsphaltPlanet16 жыл бұрын
Maybe, though the biggest knock on concrete is that it has to cure for a long period of time without running traffic over it. Modern technology has greatly reduced the amount of curing time that is required for concrete to cure but has definitely not eliminated it. And generally speaking the more rapid set concrete has worse long term durability than more conventional concrete. Overlaying concrete with asphalt prolongs the life of concrete particularly in northern climates where concrete is regularly treated with road salt.
@AsphaltPlanet16 жыл бұрын
Just as example, this year in Michigan, the existing concrete pavement on I696 was replaced. In order to do that, one direction of the highway was completely shut down for almost a year to reconstruct the highway. Can you imagine if they tried to shut down one direction of the 401 for almost a year!? Same for the Katy... i assume the concrete on the Katy will last a long time in its southern climate, but as it does approach the end of its lifespan unless you are widening the highway they’re not just going to be able to close the highway to replace the concrete. There’s too much traffic in that corridor. I prefer concrete highways as well, but building with concrete complicates construction staging in a way that asphalt simply doesn’t.
@jonathanselevators6 жыл бұрын
I mean, if it does reach the end of its life span, Texas will have the money to do it concrete again, or they might temporarily lay down asphalt during construction so they can keep traffic flowing. Then they’ll remove it. Texas is also testing roller compacted concrete.

Widest Freeway in North America. To be honest I like the 401 better because it feels wider since there are separate lanes for thru traffic and for local traffic separated by barriers. In Katy Freeway's case, it counts Frontage Roads which are kind of hidden to be honest. However I still love the Katy since it encapsulates Texas's freeway system as a whole. Wide, Urban, Flashy, and Stacked if you know what I mean. Can't wait for more Houston videos.
@AsphaltPlanet16 жыл бұрын
Personally I don’t really consider the Katy to be the widest Freeway in the world. Counting the frontage road lanes which are controlled by traffic signals as part of the freeway width has never seemed very accurate to me. Honestly though it doesn’t matter, the crown of widest Freeway is somewhat dubious anyways. The experience of driving the Katy is kind of just different than the 401. The Katy has way cooler interchanges, but the 401 has some significant hills which provide some pretty epic vistas. You never really get a good view of the Katy from the drivers seat by comparison. The Katy section of I10 is pretty short too. Honestly though they’re both great drives though.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 I still think the Downtown Connector in Atlanta (75/85) is the widest in the country, like 18 lanes counting HOT lanes

You're video is almost similar to Freewayjim's video 15-09 which is based on I-10/Katy Freeway. However, your route is shorter and you started on US 290 and you ended near mile 740 of I-10 in Texas.
