People need to be aware of what they are buying. The tick is like the old mods throwing plugs. Ford never recalled any mods for all there problems they just brought out eco boosts an coyotes to replace the 4.6 an5.4 motors. Well we are back to the nightmares with the 18s I love the way these new 18 gts run but many of us are stuck with junk motors we can’t mod.

@@underfedcoyote5.022 i dont think the engine is junk at all. I just think they need to get to the bottom of whats causing it.. my car is being dismantled right now with a ford inspector expected to come have a look. We shall see.

Hmm I run motocraft in all my Fords. Had a buddy who went through nightmare with a 6.0 diesel after he changed the earl. Thousands at the dealer nobody could figure it out. It was the puralator oil filter. There's an oil filter test on here (KZbin) where dude actually cuts them open. The results will shock you. They all aren't the same like I use to think.

To make it a little clearner try popping a hole in the bottom of the oil filter and let it drain for about 15-20 minutes. This way you have less oil getting on other parts. At least, that is what I do on my 2021 Mach 1.

I switched to Amsoil(10W30racing--no winter driving)...amazing oil. I noticed a difference right away. I put their trans oil in my T56 Magnum too...shifting has never been smoother!

I'm in Australia and have a 2017 GT, therefore the engine tick issue is not a problem as the 2015-2017 coyote motors have cylinder sleeves. Regarding the engine oil viscosity, the Ford dealers here use 5w20 but if you go to any auto parts store, the recommended oil is actually 5w30 not 5w20. I have visited all our major auto parts retailers and every one of them shows 5w30 as the recommended oil. The recommended service interval by Ford here is 15,000 kms, but i am doing intermediate services at around 7,000kms and taking it to Ford for the normal service interval as we also have a capped price service deal. Love my car, love the channel. Cheers Zander....👍

I do mine every 3500 with full synthetic , I have a 17 , but I'm not giving it any excuse to start making any funny noises . Good video bud .

@@mikekitsune123 I use nothing but Ford ( motorcraft ) 5/20 , I know it seems a bit excessive to do it every 3000 but I'm old school and like clean oil . I do the same thing with my 02 , and the same with my wife's 18 Ecoboost . See what people don't realize by putting in 5/30 , or even 5/50 in some cases , is that they are hiding the problem . Now with that said it's recommend in most of the blower cars , vmp , roush , ect , to use the heavier oil . A lot of guys who have the 18s are switching to 5/30 because of the tick , but they are masking the problem , I think the 18s are getting a bad reputation because of this tick , but these Coyotes have had the tick since 2011 , my 2011 gt had a slight tick and that car was never a problem with 90,000 miles on it , the only reason I sold it was to buy my 17 premium . Changing mine next week. After watching this I've decided to jump up to the 5w30 as well. I don't track mine yet but I drive it like I stole it. Don't have the tick but it seems like a lot of guys that do seem to get rid of it after going from 20-30. Glad to see Carnage out of the shop. She's looking good!

The current motor is basically a upgraded BOSS (Roadrunner) which took 5w50. The 2011-14 Track Pack (today is Performance Pack), took 5w50 and so did the 2012-14 GT500 and 2011-2014 GT350. They all had upgraded cooling, and internals, except the old Track Pack which lacked the internals but had the cooling. Ford should use the 5w50 or a 10w50 in it in climat s where it rarely goes below 35 F and other areas 0-5w40. They currently use the same damn oil nationwide, which is all because of your EPA for mpg ratings. The first oil has a high zink content to assist in break in. After 500 miles, change to a oil with lower or no zink. If your going to get on it past 5000 rpm at least 5-7x a day or more, I'd go with the 50 viscosity. It is a no brained. Fyi, oils don't have weights, it is viscosity. The first number is the cold air temp for a thinner easier cold start, but if your not in below freezing (32*) hardly but a a week or two a year goto a 10w40 or 50. It will not affect power or performance, just mpg's will go down a bit. Also, Fords oils show a 8-10 point drop in viscosity after 1100-1300 miles after wash change. Another good resale. To upgrade it at least to a 5w30.

If you have the tick all you have to do is add CERATEC Liquid Molly it goes away immediately the day you add it.

At 6900 miles and haven’t changed oil yet. No tick. I’m a little weary of taking it to the dealer to change oil during service because on the ford pass app there’s a memo saying “up to 8 quarts of oil” but the capacity is 10

My oil of choice Pennzoil Platinum This stuff is liquid gold buttery smooth. Great VOA too. Yes all oil will shear down from 20 so 5w30 is a good idea. I only use motorcraft filters though for the VVT system. Walmart sells these 5 qt. bottles around here for $22.

Still only a Group 3 oil. And you are paying Group 4 prices for mere Group 3. PP is made from Natural Gas or Dino oil. Group 4 has a real syn base -PAO. That's REDLINE, Royal Purple or AMSOIL Signature.

It depends if you need a Group 4 oil. Actually, AMSOIL and Redline are a blend of Group 4 and 5. Probably Royal Purple as well. Personally, I use Amazon Basic, Walmart Super Syn or MAG 1, all the same and made by Warren. SN+. But I don't race, tow or run a turbo. If I did, I would go the top 3 brands. Much better flash point.

Not sure if was mentioned already, but do-it-yourselfers should hold on to all receipts and keep a log of all changes in case any warranty issues arise. I loved doing my own oil changes, but these days, I let the dealer do them to avoid any hassle. The issue with the tick is that there seems to be no single identifiable root cause yet. Or there might be multiple causes. Also, Ford is pretty silent about it and their techs are all over the place in terms of diagnosis. In some cases, it doesn't seem to cause any real damage and in others, cylinder scoring shows up and metal particles are seen in the oil. Like you, I wouldn't worry too much about a tick that goes away when the engine is warm. Anyway, good vid.

I think you are completely correct in choosing 5 W 30 weight motor oil. The people that are using 5w 50 weight motor oil scare me. I think that is too heavy of a weight of oil. I had a 4.6 L Mustang and you had to run the oil weight that Ford told you to. The people that were running heavier weight oils in those engines ruin the top end. When Ford made the clearances for oil when it got too thick it couldn't get to the top end and destroy itself. I worked at a Ford dealership and we saw many 4.6 L V8 get destroyed because of the oil weight that was used. I'm just afraid running a 5w 50 might do the same to these new coyote engines.

You should leave the jack engaged to the frame incase the jackstand slips . Metal on metal is very slippery !

I like ester based synthetic oils, I will probably run mutol xess 5w30 in mine. It clings to parts so no dry startups. Good video.

Been watching and great info had a 2016 Fusion sport and got wreaked into 5 months later and three years later it started having water in my rear floor! Inches of water! I traded it in 5 days ago for my 19’ gt Velocity Blue 10 speed! Great channel bro! Loving the auto by the way! Thanks for the advice

My 2018 also had a typewriter random tick at cold start, when warmed up it went away. Got rid of the 5W-20 Motorcraft oil put in Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 and tick is completely gone.

Except that I just did that exact thing with PUP 5W30 at 1300 miles and now the tick is not only still there but now there is a slight rattle when you slightly rev the engine. Only when it's still cold. When its fully warmed up it goes away.

Just subscribed! Like your stuff. The ford dealer here in VA tells me the 5w20 is mainly used because it’s easier to meet emissions regulations. I’ve switched to 5w30 and haven’t noticed a loss in gas mileage or performance.

My Dads stock 2018 Blacked out GT has the “Tick”. He brought it to 3 dealerships & all Dealerships said it was the new High Pressure Fuel Pumps on the 2018’s that Tick

No tool is necessary to remove the plastic drain plug. It's designed to be turned by hand, lefty loosy righty tighty. And it doesn't hurt to replace the plug every so often being it has an O ring. The Gen 3 coyote GT engine was designed to run on 5w20. Its not necessary to jack up the passenger side of the car if you are using a jack and stand. You only need to jack the driver side (behind the K member) to have easy access to the oil filter and drain plug. Lower the car back down level to get all of the used oil possible of the pan, and jack it back up to reinstall the plug (probably overkill but I do that). Use a large open style drian pain to prevent making a mess on your garage floor.

This came back up an was reading my old comments an know it’s reality. My car is now being bought back because of the tick. Good luck to all you guys thinking the tick is normal. In my case the tick was real an went full knock. Also I lost my 10r 80 they are not a strong as many think. Many mustangs an f150 coyotes are having issues. But keep adding your additives an living with fords garbage.

I put 5w50 motorcraft synthetic in my 2019 gt. The engine rattle at 2k rpm present. It's also roush supercharged.

For the record, I got the tick before the oil change, oil changed after 4700 miles due to tick... made it worse... getting a new short block on the 24th... hope it helps, according to forums the tick in itself is not bad... it's due to the oil put in it... its if it progresses or starts to rattle, that's when it gets bad.

Justin Elkins my buddy’s if you listen to his car on My site they replaced his short block at 10k N now has 16k An the noise is coming back but he tuned the car An ford won’t touch it now. I love these cars just beware of your mods fords assholes

Great video! I've always changed my oil every 3000 miles ( back in the dinosaur days) but definitely synthetic now! I've also done the first oil change on a new car after the first 1000 miles......my GT will hit that tomorrow so I'm staying with the Motorcraft oil filter and like you 5w30 but instead I'm sticking with Mobil 1 advance synthetic and also I like to change it at 4000 miles.

I am not arguing at all but the official response is as follows:::5W-30 Versus 5W-205W-30 and 5W-20 motor oil both feature the same winter rating. This means that both grades exhibit the same viscosity under cold conditions. However, 5W-30 features a slightly higher viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius than does 5W-20. This means that once the engine reaches normal operating temperature, 5W-30 oil will be thicker than 5W-20. Due to the increased resistance of the thicker 5W-30 oil, your engine will produce slightly lower fuel economy and horsepower output. You also risk engine damage when using 5W-30 instead of 5W-20, as the internal engine components are specifically designed to be used with 5W-20 motor oil.

When Steeda told me they run 5w20 in all of their race cars , I never looked back. I've beat the shit out of my mid 11 bolt on 2012gt for 54,000 miles and have never even had a check engine light . I was going to change to 5w30 after hearing all of the "oil pros" on forums talk about independent testing and 5w20 only being on the shelves because of California emissions. Steeda said if 5w20 works in their cars, it will works on mine just fine, I didnt worry. Remember , Steeda one of the only tuners that never blew a #8 cylinder when the coyote first started getting tunes in 2011 . I trust their word and have watched them install all of my suspension at their valdosta , Ga facility. Top Notch company. ..I dont work for steeda lol

There is zero risk of engine damage from running a 5W-30. The same engine recommends 5W-50 with a different suspension/oil cooler package. There are no engine clearance differences between the two. 5W-30 is perfectly acceptable, is stated to be acceptable in the owner’s manual, stop stop spreading bunk info.

@@BC08 nice... So what are the main and rod clearances? What is the thickness of the 5w 30 in relation to the crank? Are there any other passages that couls be atarved for oil if it is too thick to flow? I personally do not know. I use what is recommended for my car by the manufacturer

Robert Meehan Robert Meehan The main clearances are .0009-.0012” as they have been on aluminum block Modulars since 1993. Rod clearances run about .0019”. There are metered oil leaks to feed the timing chains from the oil pump housing, primary chain tensions and secondary chain tensioners. These metered orifice hole diameters are universal to all Coyotes, and aren’t altered for 5W-50 track pack applications. The same goes for the cam lobes, again a metered feed to the cam lobe through the lash adjuster/followers. Again no change for the track pack 5W-50 cars. A 50-weight oil @ 100deg C will make it though much less than a .0001” clearance. Ford specs the oil based on intended oil temp, they expect cars on a road course to develop much higher oil temps than a DD, and this spec a much heavier 5W-50 to combat those higher oil temps. Engines aren’t that sensitive to oil viscosity, if you truly realized the range every engine has to deal with @ 0 deg versus 210 deg (even with the same exact oil, say a 5W-20) is an exponentially wider viscosity range than a 5W-20 and a 5W-50 both at 210 deg. If you doubt this claim, pull up a PDS and input the values into a KV calculator: oil-additives.evonik.com/product/oil-additives/resources/viscosity-index-en.html

I think one needs to also inform people that using a thicker grade is great in hotter climates, but using 5w 30 in New England during the winter in 15 degrees that is NOT good!

Dude same I actually am going to take my 2019 Ford gt 10R80 to the dealership next week and have them do a full diagnostic on the car to make sure it’s not piston slap or metals within the oil

Good choice in oil!! The most common tick is from cavitation (tiny bubbles being produced in the oil and being popped like bubble wrap is what makes that random metallic tick). I would not use Motorcraft 5W-20.

Those engines have a windage tray. They won't cavitation the oil....

Lol! Because of a windage tray a motor won't have cavitation? A windage keeps the oil from sloshing around. Lots of moving parts that can cause air bubbles in oil, it happens and with this motor it does.

I take that flap off it just gets soaked with oil from the filter anyway. Two little bolts is all it takes. Should check your oil again after start up bet it’s down even more. Those oil filters really soak up the oil even when you fill them before hand.

I'm watching this video very late, but I always use the pennzoil platinum 5w30 Euro L, its viscosity is higher and its temperature resistance is higher than the regular platinum. I got my info from the pennzoil site.

Nascar runs 15w50. You think 5w20 or 5w30 would keep your engine safe wide open for 3hr's straight?... NO....Oil gets thinner as it heats up.

I used amsoil on my 2024 and I have the tick here and there so I’ve seen the ceretec add in for that but I filled the crankcase with the 10 guards as directed so can I add it like that or do I have to remove some oil to account for the bottle of ceretec?

My 2014 GT premium asks for 05w50 do to the premium Package. Be careful from the dealer, if you don’t actually see them put the oil in, they will place a cheaper lower oil in the engine, my engine. Three time they place 05w20(2), 05w30(1) on my engine that requires the 05w50. Shady bastard, fare warning to all followers, watch the dealership during your oil changes to make sure there putting in the right oil in your vehicles and i was paying premium, they will not order the 05w50 at the dealer cause of the cause and 9quarts. Make sure you see the bottle when empty. Foo for thought to all mustangs owner, the dealer is not your friend, they will screw u , if they feel that they can get away with it. Glad you got your stand back. Looking great.

Oil filters are not the same. For all ford motors u should only run the motorcraft oil filters.

Motorcraft oil filters are made out of cheap plastic. Filters that are made out of steel or aluminum can prevent oil leaks more.

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 falls in the parameters of a high viscosity 5W-20 and a light viscosity 5W-30. Either way you cannot go wrong with using 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum.

Interesting the Michael Mac went to automotive Rotella T6. He is running that car hard. I think that might be a suitable anti-tick oil. I use T6 for everything else under the son. I have a whipple '18 so I'm using motorcraft 5/50. Let the 10 qts get warm before I drive it hard. 5500k so far so awesome. I did get oil pump gears don't know if that effects the tick.

oil pump gears should help and good choice on 5-50 if boosted. he runs t6 bc I think it has more additives to help with the abuse he car gets.

Pennzoil? I hope they have improved. Back in the day it was the oil not to use. It would gum up the engine with sludge horribly bad. Some of the fan boys claim it's made up but I seen it happen on several engines that ran it exclusively

Mustang860 Motorcraft oil is a good oil, there are much better (lower NOACK, more anti-wear, better detergent packages, higher viscosity index, better cold flow, better shear resistance, etc) oil readily available. Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum are definitely among those better oils.

I need help. So I just got my first oil change at the dealer. I told them my car needs 10q. The said no it don't. I showed them my owners manual. 10q. My receipt said 8q. I checked it and It Did not register on the dip stick I went back in they added 2q more. But it's only half way in the hash marks I went back and they said thats where it should be but here's another q. Where is your oil level in the hash marks? I was always told at the top of hash marks. Thanks

Not running the recommended 5W-20 weight is inviting a dealer to not honor a warranty issue. I’m not saying Zander shouldn’t do it, just know that even though the manual says you can run 5W-30 for “track use”, that in it of itself is going to raise flags if you say that. I’m I’ve had Ford deny or try to deny warranty claims before, and they will test the engine oil to see what’s in the car if the engine has a problem that could lead to a warranty issue. If your running a blower, they recommend 5W-50 as they mention normally, but that’s a whole different ballgame, The GT350’s run 5W-50 i believe, and I’m sure it’s safe to run in a GT, but isn’t recommended by the manual, so running it is taking a risk. I change my oil every 1,500-2,000 miles by the way, if your running the car hard it can break down the oil sooner which he mentions, but changing it more often just alleviates and issues with oil breakdown anyway....

So at 3:44 you said you have a typewriter ticking underneath the car on cold starts. Well, isn't that exactly the ticking everyone is taking about? Cold start ticking, goes away when it warms up etc etc . Thats what I had, and ford replaced my engine and now the new engine does it too.

No. All these cars tick on cold. If it’s warmed up and doing it then it’s an issue. Ford still replacing your engine. So cold ticking is still bad?

Here is my story - Car ticked for first 10 minutes of driving. Showed the dealership and they replaced my short block. They never looked in the engine and ford didn't ask any questions. New engine ticks less, but exactly the same way, and I suspect it will get worse after a few thousand miles. I don't think the car should tick on cold starts. I think its a defect that all the cars have.

ShaunTV my 17 gt pp has that same tick after every oil change( has 22k miles on it now) but goes away when it’s at operating temp and goes away completely after 500ish miles

Very informative video , but I knew this stuff already.. but it’s good for anyone who is not ever change the oil in a Mustang. Being I got free oil changes for life at my dealer I don’t think I’ll be doing myself ever LOL!

@Zander13 just curious before you changed your oil...engine warm at idle what was your oil pressure...? I have 850 miles on mine at idle warm it sits at 20psi...seems low to me just wondering.

K&N is the most overpriced oil filter available for these cars. Best filter and only filters that should be used is motorcraft or Ford Racing.

I got the tick my buddy got his motor replaced because of main bearings failing at 10k miles. There is no fix your band aiding a problem to buy time. Ford needs to recall these motors

Ya what sucks is my girl works for ford big reason i got this car. It’s fast I beat many car at the track. But man my buddy’s car 18 gt base he got a new motor at 10k now my car sounds like his when he was at 3500 miles. Ford did my first oil change Thursday An they say they can hear the noise but drive it. It’s under warranty an of something happens they will fix it. I heard that the problem with the 2018 engines is a defective lot of blocks/bores which cause the piston slap & failure. If true, then Ford should at least release the batch codes or month of production for the cars that they were used in. It's only fair that these owners be notified. If they use thicker oil to prolong a defective engine's life, then they may end up exceeding the warranty period before failure and when the engine finally breaks, they will have to foot the bill themselves.

Zander13 No kidding, man that seems like an accident waiting to happen. My 2010 Mustang has the plastic thermostat housing and intake manifold. I just had to replace the thermostat housing due to leaking at 65k miles. 200 bucks just for parts but did it myself so saved 300 to 400. Anyway it looks like they will be making plastic engine blocks before too,long ha.

Ok. Thought you did in a brief video I saw, or on a prior mustang. I guess your video was a recommended prove time product to avoid, If ask me it seems mostly connected to the plasma spray for the cylinders, instead of steel liners, which Ford started 1st year on GT for 2017. Maybe they’re doing it better now. Even though I believe they 1st started that technology with the mustang gt350. Your thoughts? Thanks Mike
