I like the size of this new X3 which is very close to the size of the original X5, and in just my opinion is the perfect size for a SUV.
@ChristianC-gy1ym6 жыл бұрын
It really is the perfect size for most needs. But there may be people out there who want more space. The X3 has a very deceiving design to make it appear larger than it is. Side by side, it is practically the same size as my wife's Rav4. No joke. And the boot space is somewhat limited because of that. I went camping this past weekend and the cargo area was jam packed with stuff and we only had 2 medium size coolers, a small grill, 2 bags of misc items, and one small luggage. I absolutely LOVE my X3 and no buyer's remorse from me. But, I see that X5 on the road and I'm like hmmmmmmm.... lol

Really enjoying my new X3. I agree with the assessment. Not necessarily the best in any category, but very good in all areas. It is a really well rounded vehicle. I agree too with many comments regarding add ons - they add up quickly and if more were inclusive the BMW would be a real stand out. The BMW idrive with the touch screen is absolutely best in class and that in itself could sway a buyer to buy this over competitors.

@ChristianC-gy1ym6 жыл бұрын
Apple only, although my product specialist told me that a software update to support Android Auto might be coming. That said... I don't think either are worth it. The tech is still in juvenile stage. You can play your music from your phone via bluetooth, send/read texts, make calls, etc. The only real advantage is that you can use your phone's navigation system in the case that you dislike your car's native version. But believe me, the X3's nav system is prime. Oh by the way, even without Apple Carplay the X3 has a phone mirroring system so that you can literally watch Netflix or KZbin or whatever you do on your phone, it'll be mirrored right onto the car's display. But video only works while parked :)

@Q2r8e76 жыл бұрын
The Apple Carplay in the 2018 X3 is $300 for 20 years. Not sure if there is a "forever" option, but there is one youtube video showing how to purchase the option from the car for "$300 for 20 years". However, as of the 2019 model year, BMW is moving to a sucky and unbelievably mind-boggling subscription scheme: $80 per year (from day 1). As others have said, carplay really isn't necessary, though. Also note that carplay cannot show directions and graphics through the optional heads-up display. The BMW nav can, and that's a big mark against getting carplay.

Great review as usual Alex. The main thing that frustrates me with this gen's X3 is that they launch this car with iDrive 6 than less than a year later the new X5 comes out with the iDrive 7. While you can argue X5 is a different class, the same interior goes into the new 3 series as well. If BMW doesn't update the X3's interior during the LCI, we're looking at a very dated interior (for BMW) for the next 5 years or more... It's not that iDrive 7 is leap years ahead in terms of features, but as a consumer knowing you're a generation behind is not a good feeling.

Alex, I don't understand how your top picks include the Volvo and GLC to compare with the X3? In your previous Audi Q5 video, you picked the Q5 as your top pick, particularly in low and mid trims. How did the GLC rise over the Q5 now? I would take the Q5 and X3 as top picks for the same money.
@AAutoBuyersGuide6 жыл бұрын
I am torn on the Q5. It’s a very good value and a very strong competitor, but the GLC I think is a better vehicle overall, except that you pay a premium for it. The Audi and Volvo are excellent values, the X3 is very very well rounded.

Alex on Autos Thanks for your reply Alex. I love your videos and highly respect your opinions. Alex on Autos Alex, After test driving the X3, I really like it and having a hard time deciding between it and the Audi Q5. I'm looking at the highest trim Prestige for the Q5 to get driver assistance and top view camera. Both of these loaded SUV's have MSRP of around $57K. For the same money, would you take the X3 over the Q5? I think for lower trim levels, the Audi has a better value, but the X3 competes well price wise in the upper trims. What is your advice? Thanks!

We finally decided on ordering the X3 over the Q5 and got it for less money nearly fully loaded. In side by side comparisons of tech features and handling, the BMW X3 simply wins out on most things (Idrive, HUD, 3D Camera, cargo layout, handling, etc). The one thing Audi has on everyone is their virtual cockout. They are both fantastic vehicles however, but looking forward to the X3.

Just drove the exact same car but without adaptive suspension (it had fixed suspension damping) and I must say, it rides beautifully. Potholes and bumps are dispatched softly, without any wallowy feeling. And it corners like a sedan that is lower to the road. You can save money by not opting for adaptive suspension. But in terms of design, the base or luxury line X3 isn't that great looking (not ugly though, just not as good as it can) . You need to get M Sport kit and 20 inch rims before it starts looking really good. The 2.0 turbo felt sprightly enough for daily use. Can't imagine what the M40i would feel like. All in all, a very good all rounder vehicle. Drives like a 5 Series and is almost as quiet. But with more boot space and higher ride. The only thing that can be better (among the Germans) is a 5 Series Touring. But you only get that in Europe I suppose.
@Kimmer6 жыл бұрын
Alex, Is the dynamic handling package or adaptive damping worth it? We're mostly concerned about a comfortable ride and wondering if the ride is adequate with the normal suspension?
@RBzee1126 жыл бұрын

@Kimmer6 жыл бұрын
I contacted Consumer Reports to ask their opinion on whether the dynamic handling package with adaptive damping is worth the extra $1400 and they told me that they wouldn't pay extra money for this. They said that this vehicle handles and drives so well that it isn't needed unless someone plans to drive very aggressively. CR, by the way, rates the X3 as the #1 compact luxury SUV. We have ordered a 2019 X3 and decided not to pay for this package, though I would definitely get it if I were buying an M-Sport BMW.

I'm currently cross shopping against XC60. I own a S90 Inscription T6 (this would be for the wife), and while the XC60 is an easy pick, I wanted to see what the rest in the segment looked and felt like. I rented a Q5 for a few days during vacation earlier this year and it was absolutely gutless. The handling was okay, off-road was very confident (the tires were excellent, so I know most of the performance is attributable to the tires), the seats were good enough for extended road trips, but not nearly as comfortable as my S90 Inscription (those seats are truly next level), but all around the transmission was less than admirable when dealing with 3 point turns or other tight parking situations (combination trip of Portland, OR and Seattle, WA). Mileage was quite excellent though. The infotainment was pretty easy to get along with (admittedly much easier than Sensus in my Volvo. Now it's perfectly fine, but when I first purchased the car it definitely required at least half an hour to get accustomed to and I work in I.T.), so that was a plus. It's not something I think I would want to purchase. I also looked up how to change the battery in the Q5 and it apparently is stored *under* the driver seat, which can take a couple hours, or a couple hundred if you have the stealership do it. I really like the A5/S5 and was hoping the Q5 performed similarly in proportion to the A5, but I was sorely let down. About to test drive an X3 today or tomorrow and based on my research it seems like I'm on the right track with the comparison of the Volvo and the BMW. Kind of amazing since I thought I'd never own a BMW due to historical reliability issues, but most seem to say they haven't had any issues with the X3, and we keep up with regular maintenance and don't beat our cars to death, so I'm curious how it'll turn out. I love my Volvo, but it'll be nice to have something a little different in the driveway so we don't get too bored!

Once Lincoln brings out an all new MC and Nautilus those will be my go to recommendations in the segment. They are crushing it with the Navigator and Aviator. I'll also be curious to see what Genesis does in this segement. $54k - Leather and nav optional, really...
@ChristianC-gy1ym6 жыл бұрын
The leather option just means you are paying for high quality leather vs standard leather. Cloth seats aren't available in this vehicle. But I could be wrong. It was that way at least with the M40i... Speaking of the M40i, the delta between a fully optioned 2 liter turbo vs a comparable M40i is less than 10 grand. I believe it was around 6 grand... (and yes, this vehicle is worth checking all the boxes for). So I really don't see the reason why anyone would opt for a well optioned 2 liter turbo when they can pay a little more and get the M40i. There are 2 ways to have this SAV. One, get a bare essentials 2 liter turbo if all you're looking for is a solid commuter/family hauler. Or two, pull the trigger on the M40i and have some fun :)

Perfect review. Tells me everything i need to know about the car in the daily life. But as a German i only can advise against buying a BMW or any premium brand as a new car. I compared a few models and this one find out that the €uro price (53.000€) are SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the U$ dollar price (43.000$ ~ 34.600€) they charge for this car. (Exchange rate included). So for buyers living in Europe i advise only buy them used or lease them but i personally would never spend 50.000€+ for a base X3 (xDrive30) without any extras...it's just not worth it that much. Car is nice but i think i will take the 5 series sedan (G30) with M-Package. This X3 doesn't look like a huge improvement to my old F30 3 series. Especially the interior space is ridiculously tight for such a big body.

I just test drove this car last week. It is a nice car, but decided against it and the Volvo. I went for massive value instead. Found out that GM is updating the Buick Envision moving from a 6 speed transmission to a 9 speed. Sure it is not quite as luxurious, and it is not quite as good to drive (but Hyperstrut helps out quite a bit on the top Premium trim level). But for a fully loaded model for $20K less than the BMW (only because the 2019 is coming out in May) I could not justify paying that much more for a car that is better - but not so much better.

I am looking at buying the 2019 X3 m40i! I just am shock at the MSRP that my buy order $68K plus $1K for shipping. Then there is sales tax, registration, year insurance other fees and I looking at final outlay of $75K! And I am leaving out a couple of packages out of the price too!
@dailyrant40685 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're fully loading it, since it starts at 55K. With that said, M40i is indeed pricey.

how does the speedometer indicate speed in kilometers?
@jsponson6 жыл бұрын
Good question. I feel that BMW missed an opportunity here; the speed markings should be part of the LCD.

As always, I appreciate this review with its intelligence and thoroughness. But in both this review and many others, I do wonder though about your attachment to Volvo. I've not heard you mention the loud and horrible sound of those over-stressed two-liter engines, and I do not recall mention of the terrible reliability that contemporary Volvos seem to have. And I should also mention the infotainment, which is small-buttoned, touch-screen-only affair that is, I think, very dangerous to use while driving. I know that you like the aesthetics of the Volvo, as do I, but is that really enough?

Such a solid review. I’m with You, my two picks are the same, XC60 and X3. The XC60 is better looking and more comfortable but I hate its computer navigation system. BMW is not as comfortable but I love the iDrive and the drive handling. If the Volvo had iDrive, it would be top dog for me.
@ryanshannon77033 жыл бұрын
The sensus navigation is just unnecessarily complicated. Well, not complicated, just precise regarding the input. I hate using it. The speech recognition isn't brilliant, either. Now, with AA connected it's such a breeze I almost forget the native interface exists and I'm glad Volvo is moving to have Android OS as their default interface. The Volvo has what I would consider a design that ages *very well*. It's so classic that it'll look great way beyond what most cars have. I think Benz has the worst time with this. Are the seats in the X3 more comfortable than in the Q5? The Q5 seats were okay. Not great, not terrible. It's definitely an unfair comparison against my S90 Inscription, though.

I do not know how come is smaller then q5, glc or xc60 is longer then all of them

Alex tested it with BMW adapted suspension, and didn't test the same on the audi, need to always compare apples to apples, sorry but audi is more free cabin noise than BMW, and the seats are more comfortable also

Really love this car, really want to lease a new one, but hesitate due to it’s reliability. Have had 2 friends who owned X 1 and the car just stop working in the mid of the road. No matter how much warranty it covers but if the car stop in the middle of the road for some electrical issue, that’s bad.

Have a 2012 X5 with 100,000 miles, has yet to leave me stranded. Haven't replaced a thing except oil, brake pads, rotors, tires, wiper blades, and a door handle that I wrecked, Ooops.

You can find any brand that has vehicles with issues. I happened to have owned Toyota and Acura that both had rare issues. Toyota had an engine issue at like 50 or 60k miles which is almost unheard of. Acura had transmission problem (that's a bit more common) and required a rebuild at 90k miles. I don't drive my vehicles hard or anything, just bad luck in my case.

Time will tell... And a car's reliability is predicted on your participation as well. You shouldn't expect a car to last 200,000 miles with neglect. Toyotas are good for that but pretty much nobody else is lol

Love my x3m40i, would like to see you drive the loaded m40i with all the stuff, this one you drove looks like it was about half equipped. (Had the non full led cluster, did not appear to have the adaptive Led lights, traffic assist,etc... I will agree against the sq5, a former VAG fanboy, they just didn't hold a candle to the performance or handling of the x3 and felt heavy and sluggish

I bought the X3 last month. Mileage to date is over 1600 miles, I got an overall 29mpg (most of the mileage was highway on a long road trip). If I was doing it again, I would take the run flat tires and not lose space with the spare tire; also I would not get a trailer hitch, in two minds about Apple Play - like some aspects, not others. Comfort and handling is top notch. Very roomy passenger compartment but luggage space is not that great.

I like the BMW better than the Mercedes. The BMW looks more truck like or man like then the soft round egg look of the Mercedes.
@contractki11er5 жыл бұрын
I feel Mercedes still hasn't gotten a grasp on an intuitive infotainment system like iDrive. And the design language is really messed up, I know most automakers are making most of their lineup look the same but for Mercedes, it kind of ruins the aura of luxury when your E Class is looking like a C Class looking like a CLA Class...
