My opinion, I wouldn't shut the hatch on the wire. Just leave it cracked and let it time out. I've been doing it to mine for over 5 years. Never had a problem.

I had the same issue with the unit getting hot and then shut off. , longer-term is to get a CTEK MXS 5.0 and use the alligator clips to the battery itself. The Transfer loss thru the Cig lighter in the back of the Corvette in my opinion not good for long term

How long does it take to charge the battery?

It really all depends the charge level and age of your battery. Typically my car would show a full charge after a night of charging. My car/battery was brand new though......yours could take longer.
