On your behalf it is a great gesture to offer to fix the TSB 18-2354 at your service facility for free. However, in today's world be careful as any issues that may arise after your repair could come back to haunt you. Unless Ford would back you in such a case. I've been there being the nice guy and getting stung in the end.

Agreed but reflashing a Ford PCM is pretty foolproof nowadays when using the Ford IDS. If it is their calibration Ford wrote it so it would be on them to fix the lines of codes as the IDS check the calibration and if it was applied properly before it ever lets you out of programming mode.

The sound is much more pronounced when cold. I’m crossing my fingers in hopes that this will all be corrected and I can finally enjoy driving my truck. I will update as soon as I can.

So, I woke up this morning it was 34 degrees in Chicago. I was hopeful that this engine ratcheting noise would be gone after this TSB, but Ford has let me down again. I just purchased a 2019 F150 used with about 60k miles little over a month ago, it has the 5.0 which is what I wanted, or at least thought I wanted because I had already been soured by my previous 1st gen Ecoboost, wanted to go to something more tired and true. Turns out that may have been a mistake because I know notice that rattle, and I have it on both acceleration between 1500-2000RPM and deceleration from about 1200-800RPM, the acceleration sound is definitely the worse of the 2 sounds and lasts longer. Wish I would have discovered this problem before purchasing because it still doesn't sound like there is a good fix for this. I've seen stories about just doing just a re-programming to the extreme of complete engine replacements, and even just replacing the VCT solenoids themselves and none of these seem to be fixes but more of just temporary improvements, but noise comes back. I haven't done a deep dive into mine yet, just trying to do all of my research first so I can come at it with a methodical approach to determine the best solution to fix it, or is it best to drop this thing before I sink a bunch of time and money into it, since I just bought it. Being that this video is 4 years old, has there been any other developments in this issue and any new discoveries as to what can be done to fix it?

@natevanlandingham1945 The funny thing is that 10 speed was a Ford-GM joint venture. I just started working at a GMC dealership, and the GM version is apparently way less problematic. My F150 would clunk, bang, miss shifts, downshift 4 gears randomly, and really just performed terribly. From my research, the valve bodies were a big problem. Before I traded mine in, I called and told the service department my issues, and they told me they could take it apart, but at that time, valve bodies were on backorder. I proceeded to drive it like I stole it until I got out of it. It was getting BAD.

So does the ticking noise on the 5.0 mustang carry over to the 5.0 on the F-150? I had a 2013 f-150 and never had a problem with it, I love the coyote engine!!!

Depends on the cam phasing table they have loaded into the PCM

The "bbq tick" is piston slap. There are other places that emit noise just because of the complexity of the engine, but the serious problem in the bottom end is piston slap. My dealer is telling me that it’s just the phaser resetting and that it’s totally normal. 🤔 they have had it 3 times now and said they replaced everything on the motor relating to the phasers and chains and guides and gaskets. Basically this noise isn’t going anywhere.

Hi Brian. First you're a godsend for putting up this info like you do. I have a question if you get a moment. Myself and quite a few on the F-150 forum that have 2018's with the 5.0 have another different noise. When we accelerate somewhat faster than normal, as soon as you let off the gas, at any speed we get a POP, which sounds like it's down around the exhaust manifold area. It doesn't matter if the engine is warm or cold, or at what speed you let off the gas, it'll happen and in any gear.. The best example would be accelerating from a stop to 30mph and taking your foot immediately off the pedal.. you can hear a pop. If you get on the gas again to accelerate to 40 or 50mph and let off, it pop's. Then you can manipulate it by 'goosing' it... Accelerate & lift off..pop, Accelerate, lift off.. pop. I should mention, that if I baby it and lift off the gas gently it won't make the noise. Also Brian, it won't pop by just revving the engine. It has to be moving. It doesn't have a hard hitting noise like a motor mount would exhibit, but anything is possible. Any advice at all would be incredibly appreciative. It really clouds an otherwise great engine. I should mention that I don't have the noise that this particular TSB video is about. I did have the transmission TSB 18-2274 taken care of a few weeks ago. The transmission is fantastic now, but that noise stayed the same. It's tough to pinpoint this issue. I tried using a go-pro with no luck. Thank you in advance Brian! John M.

*UPDATE* took my 2018 F-150 3.5L Ecoboost in on 1/4/19 for various abnormal transmission issues, including this rattle after acceleration. After a PCM and TCM update, the noise has been reduced roughly 75% in terms of loudness and seems to goes away much faster. Updates are: PCM = JLA3A-12A650-AUJ, TCM= JL3A-12B565-AHD. Transmission is much smoother, more responsive, and this rattle isn't gone, but it's MUCH better than before. Still not acceptable for a $55-60k truck with 12,500 miles on it..

Taking my 2018 F150 5.0l in the 15th had to reschedule. Probably will do the computer update. The chain isnt rattling. Two different chain designs between the 3.5 and the 5.0 and making the exact same noise. Its either the VCT solenoid hammering or the exhaust phaser itself making the noise. Put your hand on the exhaust Vct solenoid when it makes the noise. Feels like a jack hammer. The solenoid is the loudest spot listening with a stethoscope. Its happening on both sides.

So, this rattling / ratcheting sound issue has been going on for awhile now, almost a year. I originally had Tsb 18-2354 performed which helped the shift points of the transmission and it performed better, but it’s still not the smoothest transmission. The rattling / ratcheting sound on deceleration and sometimes acceleration, especially on cold start or cold weather still occurs. So, I am stuck like most of you with Ford techs not having a real answer. If you read Grant Chamber’s comment about a tsb that he came across that was left in his vehicle, tsb 19-2093 it made a lot of sense. So, I Went to my local dealer today 17AUG19 and found that tsb 19-2093 has been superseded by tsb 19-2230 that was issued 19JUL19. I have another appointment at the dealer Monday 20AUG19. They need to replicate the sound / problem and then tsb 19-2230 will be performed. Everyone who has been dealing with issue knows that replicating this sound after the transmission is warm will be more difficult as the rattling / ratcheting sound is not as pronounced. Fingers crossed. I will update the results as soon as I can.

The technician doesn’t believe this is the problem. He believes it is the valve body, and that is going to be replaced tomorrow. I honestly don’t think it will remedy the problem, but you never know. So, maybe after tomorrow if nothing changes they will complete above Tsb. This will be the second official time a dealership has tried to correct the issue. If it doesn’t work I’m going to call Ford and start my complaint. I honestly think there are multiple engine and transmission design issues that will only get worse as time goes on. This is the worst new vehicle I ever purchased.

They didn’t have an answer or new TSB as of July 2020. Same old bullshit with the dealership and service managers. The engine must have design flaws that Ford won’t fess up to and the 10 speed is garbage. GM is already dumping that co-engineered transmission and going back to their 8 speed. That being said I am the proud new owner of a 2020 Toyota Tundra. It’s like night and day. No problems, no issues, no headaches. I will never ever purchase a new Ford product. I hope you get an answer one day and your truck runs right. Good Luck.
