Been a ford man all my life and come from a long line of ford lovers.They have abandoned theyre values to longevity.They build nothing but trash now.If it was a pushrod engine it would live but it wears panties like it needs to sissy weak trash.Have a 2019 Expedition Platinum Max $80,000.00 vehicle top of the line ,58000 miles out of warranty ford wont touch it.First start it sounds like a bag of rocks rolling across a garbage can lid then throws a p0022 code.If this trash cant make it 60000 miles without a failure i dont need it. ive changed oil every 3500 miles since new.Ive turned wrenches for 40 years of my life and have never seen ill built trash like this unless it was a Caterpillar.Going to trade it tomorrow for a suburban and 16 fleet trucks will be dodge 5500 as soon as they can get them.Sad but the engineers at ford have 1 thumb in theyre ass and 1 thumb in theyre mouth and are waiting for somebody to say switch.

I bought a 19 F150 5.0 with 48,000 miles and within a week I had this repair done at the dealership under warranty. Everything ran great for about 2,000 miles and then the check engine light came back on. I brought it to another dealer and they said it needs the repair done again! The dealer also brought to my attention that this repair has been performed on my truck 2 other times. Now my truck has barely over 50,000 miles and its had this repair done 3 times! My piggy bank got fat (I had the money) but my regular mechanic said he would do it, but then when I went to pick-up my truck, he says that I didn't need to do all that work. He just changed a coil & spark plug, the engine light went out. But my engine light came back ON after a few months. Before I took it to my mechanic, the light went OFF on its own! A few months later, it came back ON after driving it about 800 miles. I mentioned this to my mechanic and told him I was going to take it to him, then the dumb engine light went OFF again. Right now it's OFF, but I have a feeling it will come back ON again eventually. I can't find a good master mechanic near Houston, Texas. I'm not taking it back to my regular mechanic (fair price kind of guy, that's why I love taking my vehicles to him). The truck runs great, even when the engine light comes ON, but lately, I noticed it loses power when the engine is nice and warmed-up. It still drives, but I can tell is not accelerating properly. I would hate for it to stall on me at a traffic light. (yikes) Anyway, that's my update. I will probably take it to another mechanic, but hopefully I can find a master mechanic to change my phasers, timing chain, tensioners, water pump, etc.

The dealer quoted me over $4k for the entire job, or $1400 for the parts (water pump incl). It took me damn near 30 hrs total, but I can see mechanic that has done it before doing it in half the time. Brutal, most of the work is just getting to the timing chain without breaking anything and learning how it all works while tearing it down. But if saving a few g's is worth it to you, educate yourself then get your hands dirty. Doing this job in your driveway will put hair on your chest.

I currently have a 2016 3.5 Ecoboost F150, which I bought 'preowned'. When I purchased it, I found all/any warranty work, service where done at the same location the truck was bought new! So, I went to that dealer, and they printed out every single time the truck was in, and what it was in for...including oil changes. It obviously always had oil changes within a reasonable time, and it was the Motorcraft synthetic blend oil used, and the only time it didn't (but had a full synthetic used) was the non-Ford dealer that sold it to me, and they put all new brakes and rotors on as well. I'm currently at 127,000 miles, and the engine runs perfect. The only main issue, was it had one exhaust manifold changed on it, and one water pump, but has been good ever since. I did add a 'catch-can' to the truck to help hold off the majority of the gunk from the PVC, other than that all is OEM. I love the truck, as it has all the options I'd want in a truck, so I would certainly have VCT Phaser's replaced if/when they may go out, and I'd have a new chain and any other parts upgraded as well, 'but' my question would be, (unsure if there is anything that would fix this, or if I should) are the heads, as being a 2016 it would have the PVC being returned and mucking up the valves)? Not sure if one should change the heads at the point if the body is off the truck in having the heads cleaned & replaced, new heads or whether to bother with it at all? I'm just thinking 'Longevity' of this truck, so looking for information on if it would be smart to think about this possible head issue, or just do the phaser work? By the way, I drive my truck for getting the best fuel mileage, so it's not driven hard at all, with minimal if any towing.
@FlyingWrenches133 жыл бұрын
Honestly it’s just not necessary to do all that work. I would replace the phasers if/when they tear up but other than that I wouldn’t do anything. I’ve seen plenty 300k mile 3.5’s that never had anything done but regular maintenance.

What is your opinion of the newest 2.7L motors ? what are the trending problems that you are seeing ? For 2020 would you go 2.7 , 3.5, or 5.0 for moderate towing of 5,000 lbs and everyday driving. I really like when things are explained and I can see the process, well done. I'm a airline mechanic and I am always looking for the cause of why something failed.

Awesome. I actually do a lot of GA flying so naturally I end up working on all the wore out cessnas around lol if you were gonna get a 2020, I wouldn’t rule out the 5.0. They seem to be doing really well with the new direct and port injection. That said, My opinion on the 2.7 is they are really under rated. Crazy amounts of power in them and they pull there own in the towing game.
@1FiftyOverland4 жыл бұрын
I found the the 5.0 it is usually the intake vct solenoids causing the issue, I have had them stall on me at stop lights. The 3.5l it is usually the phasers, especially if they have the horrible cold start rattle.
@FlyingWrenches134 жыл бұрын

I have a 2017 F150 Platinum 3.5 ecoboost with 48k miles on it. I recently heard a slight knock in the engine. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosised the the issue you have described in you video (cam solenoid). The remedy you described to prevent the issue, changing oil every 4-5k miles didn't work for me. The dealer changed the oil with the synthetic blend a couple of times at 3-5k miles. Then I had them to use their Motocraft full synthetic a couple of times. Then more recently I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. Each oil change was no more than 5k miles, yet I developed the cam solenoid issue. My truck never had a check engine light or any malfunction light, I just noticed a slight knock when I was under the hood changing out the battery. Had I not been outside of the vehicle with the hood open and motor running, I may not have heard the knocking, but I cought it early. My question is since I changed my oil with synthetic oil at no more than 5k miles what can I do to prevent the cam solenoid issue from reoccurring?
@FlyingWrenches133 жыл бұрын
The main thing that changing your oil regularly will prevent is engine sludge. Was it setting any dtcs? Also is this a 3.5 or a 5.0? Most of the time the 5.0s don’t make any noise they just set a dtc. The 3.5 is the one that’s bad about rattling.
@Morris19743 жыл бұрын
@@FlyingWrenches13 The engine is the 3.5 ecoboost. There was no check engine light, I just noticed the slight knocking sound coming from the passenger side of the engine. After picking the truck up on way home the check engine light came on. So back to the dealership it goes.

I have a 2015 F-150 with the 5.0 that I purchased with 40k miles on it and I’ve put 90k on it since. It’s had this problem of stalling at stop lights ever since I bought it, especially when the oil life is towards the tail end of its life. I religiously change my oil and use full synthetic high mileage oil every 5k miles, and the problem seems to go away for the most part for the first 2k-3k miles on an oil change and then resurrects after that. I haven’t thrown any codes this entire time and this VCT solenoid scenario is the first time where I’ve heard of an actual fix for this, and I appreciate this info greatly! I did want to ask though, is there a way to clean out all the gunk and loosen up the VCT solenoids within the engine now? I’m not sure if I can reverse the damage already done, but man that would be nice! TIA!

Very knowledgeable, as a home "Shadetree Mech" I do as much as I can on my own but a jacked up back limits leaning over fenders. The wife's 13 Edge with the 2.0 EcoBoost needs the valves cleaned, I'm starting to do some research to see if my body will allow me to do it. If you haven't done one yet, a video on how to do this would be great.

Hey. Great info. Thanks. Just a note. I purchased my 2019 5.0 from enterprise rentals with 25k miles. I have done full synthetic oil changes every 5k and I just hit 66k miles and started getting the P0022 code. Also, maybe or maybe not relevant, I had the burning oil thing which required a replacement dipstick and PCM reset. It has started burning oil again last oil change. The code goes in and out randomly

Been having the same problem with my 5.0. They replaced the dipstick and updated the PCM multiple times, solenoids have been replaced and still had the issue. Finally, they are changing the phasers this upcoming Tuesday. Hoping that resolves this issue. It’s been an on and off problem for over a year now. Currently at 65k miles and change my oil every 3,500-4,500 miles.

Great video! I appreciate the details you add to your explanation. One thing worth noting is that Ford's related bulletin (SSM 48423) calls for mechanics to only replace the VCT solenoid, and that's only after forcing the solenoid to cycle 10 or so times manually to try and "clear the blockage". In my opinion if you're having issues with solenoid sticking you're not going to fix it on any long term basis by repeatedly cycling the plunger. You might get it to go but soon enough you'll be back at it. The bulletin doesn't mention the phasers at all. I'm looking at a 2019 F-150 where the dealer is replacing the solenoid after getting a P0022 error code. Should I be asking them replace the phaser at the same time before I buy??
@FlyingWrenches133 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would. A lot of people like to replace the solenoid first and sometimes that is all it needs. I look at it from a comeback standpoint. I like to make sure that I don’t have repeat repairs so I try to always replace everything as a set. That’s just how I’ve always done them.

Thanks for the great video! On a 2020 F-150 5.0, what would cause a "rattling" sound under light throttle at slight throttle tip-in between 2000k-2500k RPM's? For instance, just driving slowly around a parking lot, when the RPM's reach that range and you just slightly press the gas, it sounds like a can of marbles. Press the gas more it goes away...let up on the gas it goes away. I've had it to the dealership twice and both times they haven't addressed it (first time was at 1k miles and it still does it now at 35k miles). I'm about to be out of my powertrain warranty and want to get it addressed but I'm getting the feeling the dealer doesn't want to fix it under warranty so they're pushing it off until after the warranty is expired. From what I've been able to see online, it could be the phasers? Any input you can provide is much appreciated!

Interesting you mention vtc phaser functions off oil pressure. F-150 when you first start the engine, has zero oil pressure for 2-5 seconds. So you can hear a rattle/pining on start. I saw another video where you can start the engine by putting gas paddle to floor, crank engine for about 3-5 second and oil pressure comes up, then let of gas. Might take awhile to make it a habit but perhaps this would stop damage to vtc phaser?
@FlyingWrenches133 жыл бұрын
That is true. You can hold accelerator pedal to WOT and that kills injectors so you can spin it to prime oil pressure. The thing is even then your still eventually going to have phaser issues. Besides that, you shouldn’t have to do all that to prevent noises. Just a bad design on ford.
