Anyone who has pulled with both trucks knows that the 3.5 will out pull the 5.0 in the mountains all day every day regardless of rear end ratio or any other specs. The 3.5 blows the 5.0 out of the water on low end torque, The 3.5 develops most of that torque around 2500 RPM, and if your towing that is where it is at. Simply put the 3.5 tows like a diesel and the 5.0 tows like gas.

Living in Colorado and having towed up this route with a GMC v8, an expedition with an Ecoboost and now a f150 there is frankly no comparison. The Ecoboost has incredible power. If you get behind a slow truck or car while climbing a 7% grade at 10,000ft with the v8 it struggles to get back to the speed limit. With the Ecoboost you can race up to the tunnel passing slow trucks along the way.

@Vegas EMT not correct. the rear axle is always applying torque multiplication. So if you are locked in 7th (1:1) and making 200lb-ft at that particular RPM from an engine a 3.55 is transmitting 710lb-ft to the tires vs a 3.15 that is transmitting 630lb-ft. Once you factor in that the 3.5 makes more torque at a lower RPM and has a broader powerband. It becomes unfair. All these years and I'm still waiting on tfltruck to get their hands on an F-150 5.0 with the most aggressive gear ratio which is a 3.73 and taking up this mountain verses an non "max tow" EcoBoost with 10000 pound behind it.

ya but the 5.0 was also at a disadvantage with the shitty gear ratio. so it probably even back out the playing field. less weight but technically more load on the engine do to a taller gear ratio. i bet if both were 4wd and the same ratio it would have been a very similar result.
@WindRidgeWoodCrafts5 жыл бұрын
I don't have the full range of gear ratios, but as long as they run the majority of the tests between, say 3rd and 7th gear, the final ratio doesn't play that big of a part. If they were testing 0-20 mph or 90+ performance, I'd agree that final ratio would be significant. But, for the few seconds they're accelerating at the very beginning of the uphill, that's probably the only time it comes into play, with the 5.0 being on the losing end due to lower ratio and higher torque peak (RPM), but still completely up to the task.
@TheDaltonmichaels5 жыл бұрын
Well for example , assume both trucks make peak power close to 4k rpms. with both trucks in 4th gear at 65 mph which on the ford trans is 1.76 : 1 ,,,, the v8 truck will be at 4,175 rpm ,,,, and the v6 truck will be at 4,705 rpm ,,,, so the v6 truck gets to sit right in its happy spot while the v8 has to shift down but still has to maintain a high rpm because they are doing 65 mph. at 65 mph in 3rd gear which is 2.14 : 1 with a 3.15 ratio the engine is now at 5,700 rpm just to maintain speed regardless of load , not necessarily because it needs to be there to pull the weight up the hill. And yet the v8 still burned less fuel.
@OliG25 жыл бұрын
For all of you who just look at the rear gear ratio, you seem to forget that this 2wd F150 has a 29.5 inch tire (265/60/18) whereas the 4wd F150 has a 31.9 inch tire (275/55/20), so when you take this into consideration, the 3.15 gears on the 2wd are the equivalent of 3.40 gears on the 4wd which is only a 4.3% difference with 3.55 gears, so not enough to make a significant difference. The 700lbs weight advantage that the 5.0 has does make a huge difference though, much more than a 4.3% longer effective gearing ratio. My point is, in this test, the 3.5 easily beat the 5.0, fair and square (even with a major weight disadvantage that easily outweighs the tiny gearing advantage the 3.5 had).

Great video. Thanks! At high load the EcoBoost may be more fuel efficient if you keep the revs higher. At low-mid RPM (high load), the ECU may dump more fuel into the cylinders than Stoichiometrically needed in order to avoid Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI). I'd be curious if 4th gear at the same speed all the way up the hill (lock out 5th) would yield better fuel mileage. In my 2017 EcoBoost Expedition EL (3.73), I also notice Exhaust Gas Temps to be higher (up to 1700º F !!) at lower RPM with load, which is not good for the engine, so I try to keep higher gears locked out, especially under load/when towing. A $25 OBDII Bluetooth module (Amazon) + $5 Torque mobile app would allow you to monitor EGT unintrusively. Not sure why Ford has their transmissions so strongly preferring higher gears with the EcoBoost, even in Tow/Haul mode. Unless load is almost nil, there seems to be very little benefit to keeping RPMs below 2-3k RPM.

Honest question: With a 10-speed automatic, why does the final gear ratio matter that much anymore? I mean, I'm an engineer and understand it... if you take two identical trucks and change only that final gear ratio there will definitely be a difference. What I'm getting at is, compare it to long ago with a three speed automatic. A lot more compromises needed to be made there. But with 10 gears, aren't they able to get BOTH low end torque and high end fuel economy, and just make all trucks, I don't know, 3.73 or 3.55 (midrange)?

You have to look at transmission gearing and rear end gearing. Rear end gearing doesn't matter as much anymore by itself. Take the Tundra for example. 4.30 rear end gears, wow super low! But, the transmissions final gear is 0.59. That's crazy tall. so the truck is doing 1,800 rpms at 70mph. With those transmission gears, I would rather have a 4.88 rear end.

ford gives different max towing numbers depending on the final drive ratio, and they are quite different. perhaps it is to do with loads on the transmission even if it could find a lower gear to compensate? perhaps the gear ratio changes too much from one gear to the next at the lower end on the highway to be of use in this low final drive ratio scenario? just speculating...

Tfl's results make total sense. Although turbos can compensate for power output, they cannot do anything to increase engine braking performance. A higher displacement engine will by design have more vacuum resistance, because it has to try to ingest, compress, and expel more air then its smaller turbocharged counterparts. Likewise, the mpgs, although surprising at first, also kind of make sense. The 5.0 makes less power, and although power is not _directly_ proportional to fuel consumption, it does _generally_ mean less power = less gas. Also, the ecoboost makes a lot on torque low in the rpms, so it doesn't need to run in low gears to make hill-climbing power... BUT. Because it's spinning at a slower speed, it actually has to push harder than the 5.0 does, and to do that, more fuel is required. In fact, that's exactly how turbos are supposed to work: compress more air into the engine so more fuel can be injected to compensate for a lower displacement. With the ecoboost you really can only have either the "eco" or the "boost", but never both. I'm not an engineer, but this is really kind of interesting

Well all I know is that I traded my older 5.4 v8 off for a 3.5 turbo and was very happy with the power of the 3.5. Towing is a joy now, the 5.4 always struggled on California mountain grades - no problem now with the 3.5. say what you will about the V8's but the 3.5 turbo 6 is great in my books.

I wonder how many people commenting here live in Colorado where these tests are conducted and understand the effect that elevation has on power? The 5.0 truck (and the 5.3 or 6.2 Chevy and the 5.7 Hemi) feel like you are driving a worn-out 4-banger at this elevation when compared to the EcoBoost. You literally have to drive those V8 trucks like you stole them to get any type of power from those motors. The EcoBoost is effortless power at low RPMs. I drove all of the trucks back-to-back when shopping for a new truck. The EcoBoost was in a class of its own.

Interesting comment. I guess the trolls need to get their thoughts out there too. Another good video. After reading the comments I have to laugh at all the reliability comments. I’m on my second EB first one 120000 trouble free miles except an O2 sensor. Now my second at 32000 trouble free miles. I’m not an anomaly. I could say coyotes are junk cuz ford had to replace my buddies motor at 9000 miles. But I wouldn’t say that cuz that I’m sure was a rare case and it is a good motor too. If you want to tow and carry heavy loads with a half ton the EB is the better choice. If you want to tow 7000 or less pretty much both motors will do fine. Ive owned several Fords from 250 with 351s to 4.6 to 5.4 F150s and so on so I’m not young and appreciate V8s but I also respect technology and the power being produced by the EB. Not saying that the supposed 700 pound difference didnt effect the results because it probably does but the gear ratio come on is the needle in the haystack. We own a 4WD 2016 F150 Lariat Ecoboost (yes, equipped for towing) and frequently tow a 6K# travel trailer. It's a satisfactory tow vehicle and comfortable for daily driving. We borrowed an F250 with a big V8 to move our trailer since our F150 was in for repairs. One manifold cover had warped, popping the bolts, rendering the truck unusable--at 31,000 miles. Three weeks at the dealer waiting for parts, it was covered under the drivetrain warranty. Not confidence inspiring for long-term durability. The F250 had a much stiffer suspension--not a comfortable ride--but the trailer pulled like buttah. No lateral sway--it's minor with the F150, but detectable even with a weight distributing hitch. The F150 unsurprisingly has more torque and pulls uphill much easier. The F250 struggled a bit, even with a big V8.

Power and gas mileage 3.5 eco boost is it. However I do love the sound of the 5.0....I love both engines but I just can’t go back down in power and less gas mileage for sound. Keep the 3.5 quite with the stock exhaust it’s not bad. The turbos actually sounds good to me.Both are great engines it’s all in what is for you. I have a 2015 5.0 and a 2018 3.5L

I was amazed at the performance of the 5.0l coyote. I thought with that 3.15 rear end the EB would have blown it away, but it barely beat it in time and used way more fuel. 5.0 wins hands down
@paulhunter96132 жыл бұрын
It really doesn’t matter what engine you have, going up the hill at 60 mph will be approximately the same for both. But I did see the 5.0 struggling to keep up but that is expected

My vote is with the V8. Simpler, will likely be on the road later on, and ahh... the sound. Can't beat that natural V8 rumble!

I too have a soft spot for the "Flowmaster" sound on the V-8. Can't the same sound be engineered by now for a V-6? I would put one on in a heartbeat.

Wow, look at that the price difference between those 2 trucks. I think with some bargaining you could get the XLT and an Escape for the same price as that Lariat.
@plmn935 жыл бұрын
Yep. 12-13K off an XLT is pretty common, I did even better. Lariats just don't have the same incentives so you end up paying a lot of money for not much in return. Auto 4x4, pushbutton start, etc, nice stuff but not worth the upcharge for most people who do the math. Regardless of how much Ford charges for options, the F-150 is a $30K truck at heart and the XLT is priced accordingly on dealer lots.

I agree with this. I would have loved to have some of the features of the Lariat, but it just wasn't in the budget. The incentives made the XLT a much better deal. I bought a higher contented 2017 XLT and about the only thing I really missed was a leather interior. I had Katzkin leather installed after about a year and have not regretted going with the XLT ever since. @@plmn93

Couldnt care less about the marginal difference in brake applications. Imagine the v8 pulling the extra 700lbs up that hill that the ecoboost did effortlessly. V8 was already screaming. Not sure how it got better gas miles. Weight and axle has to be a factor but I'm still surprised. I tow campers and heavy trailers regularly and the ecoboost feels great and gets solid gas miles.
@TheGrayGhostGT5 жыл бұрын
Should have tested them both with the same running gear. 4X4 with either a LSD or locking 3.73 gears or 3.55 gears. Most recreational homeowners who tow tend to run those gears. 3.15 open diff 4X2, no one really ever runs that unless it's a business and fuel mileage is what is cared about.
@tobybeast1235 жыл бұрын
If I had it to do again I would get the Coyote. The EcoBoost is a fine engine but with the fuel economy numbers being so close I would choose the less complicated V8 setup. However, I do not live in an area where the elevation is as hi. The area I live in stays generally between 800 and 1000 above sea level With some "mountains" getting to about 5000.
@caedom215 жыл бұрын
Brandon Grant I agree. I had a 2011 eco boost and then traded it in for a 2017 v8. I love the v8 motor. My mpg is 22 on hwy and 18.7combined.
@dchawk815 жыл бұрын
Same here. I got the V8 because I can conceivably work on it myself in 20 years. And we just have steep hills in PA. No real mountains like the Midwest. Maybe the turbo is workable too but the idea of it scared me. Lol.
@chevyon37s5 жыл бұрын
dchawk81 the turbo V6 is no more complicated than the V8, it’s just as simple in my book as it has two less cylinders which make for two less large masses moving up and down.
@CJColvin5 жыл бұрын
@@chevyon37s If you say so.
@caedom215 жыл бұрын
Drew w I respectfully disagree. The addition of an inter cooler, two turbos, and related hoses is definitely more complicated. In normal use, I expect the turbos to last 10-20 years. In fact, even with heavy use, I expect the transmission to give out before the engine. We’ve had over a decade of Ford turbos and nearly a decade of eco boost f150s and the evidence is that the reliability is on par with NA engines.
@DarylSparks5 жыл бұрын
V8 coyote all the way with 373 axle gears best truck you'll ever own if you bought a EcoBoost you'll have the Boost to blowing off all time turbo issues and the more mileage you put on it gets harder on gas as it gets older they get great gas mileage when they're brand new but that's it does a good buddy of mine worked at the Ford dealership and he says he works on those EcoBoost engines all the time

Rear axle ratios don't matter much when both trucks are 10speed. The 3.5 EB went up the hill in 5th with overall gear ratio of 5.396:1 while carrying 700lbs more. The 5.0 Coyote did it in 3rd with an overall gear ratio of 6.74:1. Yes the Coyote got better MPG because it has always done that. The EB is thirsty when in boost! Try this one again in the summer heat. The EB will continue to use more fuel but it will again fly up that mountain without breaking a sweat. Put a Max Tow 2.7 EB 2WD against the 5.0L in this review and see how they stack up. Haters gonna hate on that one for sure. 10 speed gear ratios for your enjoyment 1st 4.86...2nd 2.98...3rd 2.14...4th 1.76...5th 1.52...6th 1.27...7th 1.00 to 1

Eco boost is great. So long as you don’t have intercooler condensation, carbon build up, timing chain stretch. Coolant leaks, turbo coolant leaks, oil leaks, premature spark plug failure. Make sure you own it in warranty. My truck had all these issues under 100k miles. Save yourself a lot of money get the 6.2
@crazynova235 жыл бұрын
The thing people don’t realize is that the Ecoboost isn’t Eco and boost. It’s Eco or boost. When you’re in the boost, it’s not very economical. You made the test on both, but what happens when you’re doing a grade like that in the summer? The 5.0 is running hard the whole time whereas the Ecoboost makes it easy.
