As a long time, die hard V8 guy, I was completely blown away by the power of the 3.5. I would've never imagined buying a V6, but after driving the 5.0, then the 3.5, there truly was no comparison. I had to get the 3.5. Of course, the fact that it was a fully loaded, Lariat, Sport model with heated and cooled seats also helped, as the 5.0 was a moderate optioned XLT. Overall, it's a beast. As long as the 5.0 stays in the Mustang, I'll be happy and grudgingly take back all the crap I've spewed against the Ecoboost over the past few years. Sure, it sounds like an angry sewing machine, but it is getting 26 MPG and pulls like a freight train.

I think you should try using Cruise Control in the tests It may be too late for 2018, but if you still have the truck, please try it. I propose that it is especially important on the trucks that can "easily" reach 60 MPH on the uphill run. It would help the fuel economy because the truck would "know" what speed you wanted it to run, and maintain the gearing without "throttle input" changing gears. Also, I am not sure if it would really help (as the video kindof glossed over the downhill portion), but my truck seems to do much more aggressive engine braking, even empty and NOT in Tow-haul while using the cruise control going downhill in the mountains. I am not sure if Tow-Haul is *designed* to "maintain" a certain speed, just because you braked to it, while cruise control is designed exactly for that, however breaks will obviously "disable" cruise control. The engine braking will help *while* you are applying the brakes, but it doesn't have any goal or incentive to maintain. (although in my testing, I have noticed that it holds the gear it was in while braking unless you give it throttle input) For my recent towing experience... I towed our last 5 steers from our ranch around Kit Carson, CO to the butcher in Flagler, CO with my 2015 F150 3.5L EcoBoost when our normal tow rig (2000 Dodge 3500 Cummins) had a minor mechanical issue. While I admit that I was not on IKE, there were still some hills to contend with, and towing on sandy/gravel roads is especially challenging for MPG. I was towing a rather large (8' x 24' on the floor) gooseneck aluminum stock trailer. I have no video or recorded data, but it sure seemed like cruise control helped the truck run at a more relaxed pace uphill. On the way up (mostly uphill), I was at 17120 GCW, and my "load" could "walk around", altering the tongue weight and shifting the trailer weight, but with gooseneck/fifthwheel, that doesn't matter as much as bumper pull. On the way back (mostly downhill), I was only 11660 GCW. I don't know what the truck's weight was (and I didn't have time to mess around at the scales), but I think its pretty close to 5600 (as I think the trailer weighs 6000 empty). That puts my loaded trailer weight around 11,500, which is effectively max for the 2015.
@jamesbeaman63376 жыл бұрын
The article at rvtravel.com/okay-to-use-cruise-control-while-towing/ seems to have a different opinion that using cruise control on steep grades actually reduces the fuel economy. It would be interesting to see them try this test though.

The brake application thing is dumb. Oh no! We had to touch the brakes 10 times pulling 10k down the longest and steepest hill in the us. Big deal. Basically what they are saying is they want the tow haul mode to control the truck. I don't want or need that. I can select a gear and determine the behavior of the vehicle myself based on conditions and weight. Would you want a tow haul mode interfering if you hit a patch of ice?
@tacopro2186 жыл бұрын
Your name should be Clit.
@jessehernandez50436 жыл бұрын
Problem is they didnt need to select the gear, they were revved out already and it still wasnt enough to slow they truck down which is definitely a design flaw. This was only 9k and they say this truck can tow 12k which is scary to think when the tranny and engine cant work together to slow it down enough to maintain a SAFE speed. And yes thats very important because you dont want your breaks to already be warm and then potentially have to come to a sudden stop out of nowhere. If youve never been in a vehicle that had brake fail then i understand why you dont see the importance of this
@bobalobalie6 жыл бұрын
Since it's their "gold hitch award" testing they can use all the vehicle's features. As such they should have used the adaptive cruise control for the down hill. Ford is the only truck whose adaptive cruise will maintain a certain speed downhill while towing.

This test doesn't illustrate capacity it demonstrates behavior. Behavior of the tow haul mode to be precise. I personally don't want the truck making decisions for me.

So what’s the max tow weight on this truck, with crew cab and 4x4? This trailer was 9500. You guys tested it with 11,000...
@ShelbygtR-wo8wh6 жыл бұрын
So the the down hill braking was the same as last year at 10,mpg was same at 3.5,it was faster this year by 4 seconds and got 2 1/2 more points than last year

The max tow package does NOT include the tow mirrors! That MUST be ordered as a separate option.

Thanks for the video and great review. seems like a pretty good performing well-put-together truck. my concern is still about the V6 long-term doing heavy towing. I'm sure it'll be a good daily driver .

like a rock i hear they put pretty good internals in the motor...
@jpatt9736 жыл бұрын
DonnaSean I hope the internals are better than the 5 .4 was because that motor was a good daily driver in the cars but once it came to heavy duty application not so good I see them all the time with cam phaser problems and timing chain problems not to mention spark plugs that you can't get out and exhaust manifolds that leak constantly
@DS-TRUCKS6 жыл бұрын
like a rock oh yea. Way better than the 5.4!

like a rock Go 5.0 or 6.2, much better engines for longevity, 5.4 was garbage.
@jpatt9736 жыл бұрын
Boo Ya the problem is, and I'm assuming you're talking about the new 5.0 the jury is still out on it as well as the 6-2 they may be much better engines but they haven't been out there long enough yet, as much as I hate the 5.4 liter I love the 6.8 liter V10 I think it does a fantastic job in the RV Market it does do all its work at the high RPM but it still seems to hold up better than those 5.4 did . I'm obviously a GM Fanboy but I've owned ford RV chassis and Expeditions in the past so I'm not speaking just as a fanboy

What would you say is the sweet spot for towing weight? I can't imagine this truck is really very happy at it's 12000lb+ limit. I'm Looking at a new truck. I have a 6.0l F-250 and I tow a 8-8500lb boat. These new F-150 are rated to tow more than my old 6.0l. I'm figuring that might be a pretty sweet weight for these trucks.

my truck is a standard with 300,000 miles on the original clutch...ive replaced the cheap brake pads alot and never use my expensive, difficult to replace clutch to slow down...i just leave it in a lower gear if im going down a big hill but never rev it up and pick a lower gear and same with the automatic, id rather buy brakes than a transmission

Good channel, I've been a subscriber for about a year. Question, Why don't you use cruise control after attaining your 60 mph uphill and the same on the down hill @ 50mph? I've got a Dodge Ram quad mega cab with a Cummins 2011 and going back and forth from a suburb of Phoenix (Chandler, Arizona ) to the White Mountains (Pinetop) 3 times a week, at least. My point is, I rarely touch the brakes. Btw way, I'm pulling a tandem trailer (combined GVWR IS 19,000) And it's all factory, no chip.

Enclosed utility trailers with weight placed perfectly over the axles do not represent what many truck users experience towing travel trailers. My 7500 lb loaded toy hauler represents a larger box that is 30 ft from ball to bumper, is 10’6” high, 97” wide and the body is close to 24” off the ground. It often has 50 gallons of fluids sloshing around in the three tanks on board. This creates a whole different dynamic than your tidy utility trailers that don’t even require a weight distribution hitch with anti sway parts to keep you under control. How about showing us a test with what many thousands of us camper pullers deal with.

Does the 2018 automatically enable Tow-haul? I find it funny that when my 2015 "detects" that I have connected a trailer, it automatically disables the backup alarm, and the BLIS system, but doesn't enable tow-haul on the transmission. I usually notice it within a few miles, but every time you start up it resets back to "normal" mode.
@gizmopilot6 жыл бұрын
Tommy McNeely - I just hooked up my rv with the 7 pin and as you said the truck knows- but not the transmission- funny it has a nice towing check list and they don’t even put make sure to use tow/haul mode let alone just do it. I have a 2018 platinum with max tow.

Great video, glad you changed the subjective score. Would like to see real world fuel mileage, nobody really trusts what the gauge is saying, plus each truck burns fuel differently on the way down with engine braking. With EV trucks they will re-charge on the way down so what happens then? Please keep the gauge shots coming, we all like to see the rpms and speed on the way up
