I like that Ford is offering a diesel in the F150, but it seems a little rushed. The fact that they had to reprogram the ECM after the issue during the first downhill run reminds me of all the issues they had with Navistar’s 6.0 diesel, which was definitely rushed into production. Maybe I’m wrong, only time will tell.

DanielJaegerFilms The 6.0 problems were physical- weak heads, egr, turbo, etc. This was a pre-production computer issue. This motor has been around for years; just not in the F150.
@ratedredneck966 жыл бұрын
DanielJaegerFilms they rushed it because ram was putting the ecodiesel in their 3/4 ton trucks and ford got butt hurt about being behind them when really that where they have been the whole time. They rush things at the possible expense of the person driving getting into an accident over a vehicle malfunction. My mom got a pretty much brand new platinum edition ford suv and was so excited, within three days it threw a transmission code and went into the same limp mode as the 150 did and the sales rep told mom it wasnt a safe idea to continue trying to get that car so now she has a hyundai elantra GT. But yeah thats why they rushed the f150 diesel project and its a flop just like the 6.0( i liked that reference a lot...good job lol)

The difference is this is a time proven engine from Europe that is rock solid,unlike the 6.0 navistar, which was a clean sheet design that was only built to be an entry level diesel for the price point sales trucks , it was the lowest bidder engine ,they talked it up but it was a piece of garbage that did get the truck down the road long enough to take a truck sale from a freight liner or other that used the more expensive but way more reliable 5.9/6.7 Cummins.

The Microsoft syndrome of beta testing on customer is worrisome in automotive industry. The Tesla recently had an egg on their face when Consumer Reports discovered that their model 3 had inordinately long stopping distance, and Tesla pushed some firmware updates that supposedly fixed that. That's on a long-released car - no one noticed the car takes way too long to stop? Seriously? No one at Tesla tested stopping distance? WTF? @volvo096 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is an extreme test and is quite indicative of all the minor corrections that come out (software updates) for systems in vehicles once they get released to the public... Mfg'rs try to hit these points in testing, but still have to fix things like "vehicle won't restart after being started for a short period below -20f". From the video they were going downhill and off the throttle, so the grade shift logic probably told some system to do something it didn't expect or like, like the tcm allowing a shift (if they said the exact situation I missed it).... I personally don't see it as a big deal, even if it were a gm. Software fixes are inconvenient, but it's fixable and all human error in cause.

I'm a little surprised at how much this diesel struggled during the climb compared to just about any gas powered truck, all manufactures included. That being said many are too young to remember in the mid to late Eighties and early Nineties the trucks of the day were the 454cid big block putting out a whole 230-250 hp and around 360 lb/ft of torque. Those trucks were good for about 45 mph towing 9000 lbs up our local 6 percent grade, so in those terms the little diesel performed ok. I bring that up because all the truck manufactures today have gas engines pulling around that load 60 mph up the Ike....laughing at the trucks of old...
@YZBot6 жыл бұрын
It's purely a limitation of horsepower. Everyone always likes to salivate at the torque numbers, but seem to forget that horsepower is the measure of the rate at which the torque can be applied. It's all math and doesn't take much work to see where the diesel is going to lose it's advantage to the gas engine, in respect to putting power to the ground. There is actually a point in which the little 3.3L V6 base engine will put more power to the ground and walk away from the 3.0L powerstroke. It's purely a matter of engine speed and how the torque is multiplied through the transmission and final drive ratio. It's not rated to pull that much (why Ford?) but the 2.7L Ecoboost would walk away from the 3.0L pulling the same weight.

Yes, I bought new several of those 454s and still have two today. One is a 1995 Chev HD 3500 dump truck with 82k original miles and another is a 1994 Chev regular duty 3500 service body with 78k miles both stock were junk! Since these were for commercial use they only come with a 12 month 12k warranty so after that we started the upgrades IE HD transmission coolers and engine oil coolers plus added elc fans, full exhaust replacement from the head to the tip, new cam, cold air intake, lower temp thermostat, reworked heads and valves. Yes it all helped but not enough so tried a couple complete engine rebuilds with all high performance parts,,,,,still not worth it and too many issues so bought a couple crate engines from Chev IE low compression 502 ci with 450 HP and one HD 502 ci 500 HP both were given better exhausts, and intakes which on the dyno put out 15% better than rated. This was now getting better until we had people unable to use this power who broke everything from front to back including the engines plus the fuel bills were worst than our full sized dump trucks with 15 liter diesels pulling trailers. The moral of the story is the new Ram 3500 Cummings or Ford 450/550 diesels we run now are light years ahead of any gasoline engine today in towing, long lasting durability and MPG. The lightest truck we use is the Ram 3500 and as for those two old low mileage chebbies,,,they are the garbage, fire wood and junk clean up rigs plus the ones the workers or friends can borrow anytime.

Do the three of you weight less than 594? That's the problem I have with half ton trucks, the only way to tow near the limit is to drive solo. The fuel filter that needed to be changed, and then the oil filter which took a full year and a half before aftermarket filters became available, and then the 10 quarts of Rotella T6 aren't cheap versus a Hemi with 7 quarts of synthetic and a $11 filter is much cheaper - plus no fuel filter to change every 10,000mi too I ditched the EcoDiesel for those reasons, and I had concerns with it's longevity - already had sensors replaced out of warranty before I traded it in.

There are so many problems with this video, I hardly know where to begin! First off, this is not anywhere near a fair comparison between a 5.0 V8 and the 3.5 EB. That would require them both to be 4WD and have the same axle ratio. Another mistake Mr Truck, is that the 2018 and newer 5.0L is not a 302. It is a 307. 2017 was the last year for the 302 Coyote. Starting in 2018 a millimeter larger bore, thanks to the switch to plasma cylinders, increased the displacement. Just barely staying within the 5.0L window. The 2018 and newer 5.0 has a different block, with a different bore size, different heads, different cams, different fuel injection, different compression ratio, 12:1 vs 10.5:1. Bigger valves thanks to the bigger bore, etc. this is not, as you say, “the old Coyote” . I would really like to give the normally excellent TFL crew a mulligan on this one, and maybe we can get a real 5.0 V8 to 3.5 EB Ike Gauntlet retest with like equipped trucks? Just sayin....

You can't expect a small displacement engine to have any sort of significant engine braking. I never understood why you guys just let the thing sit at redline. It doesn't have an exhaust brake and 1/2 ton trucks aren't semis, use the truck and trailer brakes like a normal person.

Pennywise has nothing to do with testing the truck it's the fact that it's points for gold hitch. Test the truck all day that's great for consumers but to bring it back to up the score is wrong. Who says they can't run the truck the third time after ford fixes it's squatting issue as they stated , there's a few more points for gold hitch if they beaf up the suspension for test number three.

To many city folks out here driving trucks that don’t know what their doing,well same goes for a lot of people on the road in general,but if you can’t sit in that seat and do the work without the technology you shouldn’t be towing,last thing you and the general public need is your tow assist features and back up features to fail you in a time of need,and you put yourself and others in a situation. Thats like our trucking industry and the way it is to many people incapable in reality to do the job so they try and creat tech so in capable people can do the job without being able to actually do it without it, this tech should be a luxury in peoples mind not a dependency.

I am a Ford person for sure, but after seeing all of Ford’s fails on your tests I get the impression that they aren’t quite up to the job of towing. Then again, this truck’s problems were due to being a pre-production vehicle.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
Of course not, they're 1/2 ton trucks they're built to show off not be towing heavy loads, maybe your little boat, popup camp trailer, or a small travel trailer, but not huge 7k+ trailers...that's what 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are built for. Ford as well as other manufacturers love to play the towing/hauling numbers game but in reality they don't give a shit because once they have your money they're out of the picture, so when you hookup to that 12k trailer because Ford says that little 4 cylinder F150 can tow it and you go plowing through a line of cars that's your fault.

Thanks for the shout out to Pittsburgh !! (Steelers hat) But I agree with the posts below... Ford only reprogrammed because YOU GUYS found the issue, and showed it to the world. I'm guessing it would have taken a lot longer if their customers were yelling about the issue. Because of that... the original test holds in my head. Something like a tow test should have been performed before they gave you a truck to test. Pre-production or not. On that note... is it still "Pre-Production"?? I thought they were hitting the dealers already. Regardless... love your tests. Keep up the good work.

Tow haul modes are, eh, interesting at best. I personally used it once and then turned it off. I learned to drive way back before they had anything like that and I prefer to do the shifting myself. It’s a good feature for novices, but if you can’t control your truck and trailer without the computer doing the work for you, well, maybe you shouldn’t be towing anything let alone a decent sized load.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, tow/haul mode meant shifting gears later, and downshifting sooner, no cruise control, to trailer sway control, never had a problem shifting gears and would rather shift gears than have a computer deciding which from experience is never right.

The problem is that starting in 2015, Ford decided to built pickups intended to get the best MPG at the expense of everything else. Instead of building tough half-tons, they now make the prius of half-tons. The suspension is softer than it used to be, the suspensions components aren't nearly as heavy duty as they used to be (thin sheetmetal control arms instead of the previous heavy forged steel control arms Ford used to brag up), the 4WD uses plastic hub locks for better fuel economy, the bed is controversial for its strength and durability.The truck is tuned to get the best MPG running to the grocery store and back.

Ed Sunderland we don't need Tesla spreading their stupid electric, self driving bullshit to the truck industry. Last thing we need are idiots towing 20,000 pounds with their hands off the wheel while watching a Harry Potter movie.
@ss442es6 жыл бұрын
I didn't say anything about self driving anything Mr. Bozo I simply asked a question and you went off the rails all liberal like, and I also mentioned Fiskar. Electric motors are the highest torque engines around which is why locomotives are diesel electrics. Further, a stock Tesla can outrun damned near everything in your zip code. I refuse the idea of self driving cars and airplanes. You make far too many assumptions there. Harry Potter? Who's that?
@CMH_19756 жыл бұрын
Ed Sunderland I don't care if you mentioned it or not. If Tesla wanted to build a truck they'd have that self driving crap in it. I know about electric motors and the torque they make. I don't care how fast a Tesla is. They're ugly vehicles in my opinion and no they can't cause you apparently don't know the types of cars in my zip code. Apparently you didn't see the story of the idiotic Tesla driver who died while watching a Harry Potter movie and didn't have his hands in the wheel while doing it.
@ss442es6 жыл бұрын
No, I am really not interested in Teslas, no I didn't hear about the Harry Potter incident and I think autopilots for airplanes are great but you do have to spend all your time checking to be sure the autopilot is working properly, but they do reduce work load like cruise control. Teslas and Fiskars regardless of the self driving aspect which I dislike too by the way, are far too expensive for the average person kind of like new Fords and Chevy's today that seem more like a mortgage than a car loan. I do want the oil companies to have some kind of competition. Right now OPEC still controls the price of crude when we produce more oil than the OPEC leader Saudi Arabia. However, the oil monopoly is happy to use Saudi manipulation to keep oil prices artificially high by slowing or stopping production and keeping any excess off the market that would lead to a reduction in fuel prices.

I don’t appreciate the fact that you guys left out the fact that the truck FAILED it’s first run in your scoring. I know it’s a pre production truck but still it’s engine and transmission gave up on the down hill which could have been potentially dangerous to an average driver with little towing experience. I just think that if a truck fails an IKE run but you retest it and it passes that a failure to complete the test should subtract points after the successful test.
