2018 Genesis G90 Test Drive Review - Can it compete with the 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class?

Move over Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Cadillac and Audi, there's a new player in town and its called the Genesis G90. This all new car rivals the competition with class leading size and quietness and even though there is no pricing yet, I'm sure it will be very attractive.

This car takes me back to 1989 when Toyota launched the Lexus LS400. So many people discounted Toyota that Lexus would be a success. 25+ years later Hyundai is doing the same as Toyota w/ the Genesis line. From what I've read, seen and heard, its only a matter of time that people separate the (conception of) economical Hyundai (Toyota) model from that of the Genesis (Lexus) line. *I* think Lexus & Infiniti need to step up their game as Hyundai just stepped it up a few notches.

I see why they did it but the difference to point out is that so far Hyundai didn't take its Sonata model and gussy it up like Toyota did to their Camry model. They made them different enough in that the two Genesis models are both rear wheel drive while Hyundai have only front wheel drive ones.

Many rich people and those with high social status in Korea drives this car, along with Kia K900. It's highly regarded for its comfortability, silentness, and its luxurious space. Personally, I think it's whole lot better than Lexus LS, Cadillac CT6, or Audi A8.

Funny thing is that this is the stock footage. However, I am the one that filmed the stock footage. I cannot fault Mr. Motor Mouth because most of us do these reviews by ourselves so there is no one else to film us driving - hence using stock footage when we need to. I try to film as much material as I can myself but sometimes its not entirely possible. At least we aren't like this channels that put up the stock footage with some voice over or sometimes with just some music and call it a review. The LS (optional) back seat controls look like they're from 1980 so this is way above it as far as that goes. It's also around 70k fully equipped vs around 150k for the 7 series/S class/LS.

USA Sales: Speaking of umbrella companies, there's big news in the automotive sales realm this month. Hyundai's new Genesis brand has officially launched. 1,497 Genesis G80 models left dealers in August (alongside 1,317 "legacy" Hyundai Genesis Sedans). Hyundai as a company reported an increase in sales for August, but as a result of the new branding, sales for the Hyundai division actually declined ever-so-slightly.

Hyundai uses fleet cars to boost their sales numbers, and they have A LOT of fleet sales. I had a choice of 13 Hyundai Sonata's or 4 Elantra's when I went to Enterprise rental last week.

Andy S Toyota and GM/Ford are more reliant on Fleet sales to boost sales number than Hyundai/Kia/Genesis. Enterprise is rammed to the lot with GM/Ford/Chrysler and Toyota's. That's how they hit their sales numbers every year. They practically give them away to these fleet giants. Besides that the Genesis G80 or G90 are too expensive to be fleet cars.

Those who value their money, those who refuse to get duped by the technology that is unreliable and extremely expensive to fix, would certainly opt for Genesis. Come on guys -in this day and age of credit - to spend extra 20 k to get the badge of S class is not hard, if that is the goal. But, when quality is available at a cheaper price and warranty is given for 10 years / 100,000 miles, why on earth- one would spend more? is to satisfy the neighbors or colleagues at work? People don't laugh at Hyundai any more, (they used to , and make fun a couple of decades ago), people started talking about Genesis in hush tones of approval now , and in a couple of years - would surely talk in the same breath as Audi/Lexus/Beamer/Benz..it is only a matter of time. Those who buy now- especially a gently used one from a dealership would have given his money a lot of respect and have got an awesome car to themselves! Bought one in 2014- and the number of days it was in dealership for repairs - remains zero. I rest my case.

Do you know the sales model strategy in Ontario? A friend of mine was told by his Genesis dealer that Eqqus dealers will become Genesis dealers. But in some recent articles I read they say they will only sell them in malls like Tesla does and not have a dealer network in Ontario or Canada like the USA does for the brand.

They will have mall locations as well as dedicated Genesis dealers. The pricing will include everything from freight+PDI, maintenance, at home service etc.This is what I was told.

Autopilot is made by third party company, Bosch or Delphi or somebody. They are selling these systems to all manufacturers now. It's not an Audi or Mercedes system.

The only bad thing about that car is the exterior - way too generic, borrowing too much from others. If they'd taken a chance it would probably get more attention. But I also think Hyundai will have a much easier time making a luxury brand out of Genesis than Toyota did out of Lexus because the public mindset is now far less resistant of an Asian up-and-comer punching up to German - in fact, it's now expected to do as well or exceed what the Japanese automakers have done.
