I'm not convinced the Adventure Sports actually has an extra inch of travel, I believe it's an inch more clearance. When I switched the springs in my 2017 (non-Adventure Sports) to Cogent Dynamics, the bike gained an inch of clearance. Both times measured without me on it. When I put it next to a dealer's Adventure Sports? Same height. Great video!

Nice review! I was really tempted by the 2018 sports, but just got a great deal on a 2017 and at the price the dealer was letting it go, I simply couldnt justify spending almost 5000$ more (CDN, before taxes) to get the 2018. A lot of money to accessorize my 2017. And I have to say I've owned and ridden tons of bikes from Triumph Scramblers to R1, and this bike is an absolute joy to ride, both for touring and offroad. The power isn't overwhelming, but there's plenty of torque available down low and in bumpy twisties it's on rails. Really awesome bike!

Nice! The AT is a great platform. Appreciate the comment.

Good review, but I am curious why you chose the DCT but then said the bike is best in manual mode? Is the full fat DCT version of this bike in manual mode better than the non DCT fully manual bike? On the DCT is there still a clutch lever or do Honda remove it? It still seems a big heavy bike for proper off road riding especially when it will be fully loaded with panniers. You would never be able to pick it up. Having said that a premium bike like this in this day and age lacking cruise control for when riding on road is unforgivable, especially as it now has fly by wire throttle. Also for the spec it could do with heated grips as std as well. Just feel that Honda have their head in the sand when you look at what rivals are offering. For genuine off road ridingThe KTM EXC 500 or 690 Enduro R maybe far better options. You would at least be able to pick them up! But if you need the bike for more road orientated riding then perhaps the bigger heavy models would be desirable and where the BMW GS scores so heavily. Love the colour of the AT with gold wheels.

We said it's best in manual mode in offroad conditions where we prefer to have complete control over the bike... using the throttle and brakes to steer the bike etc. But the DCT definitely has its advantages in normal riding conditions once you give it some time and get used to it. On tarmac... it's a beast. You can't out ride it. Period.

Which one is to choose? DCT or Manual model?
@UPSHIFT_ONLINE5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, we like them both... but we would probably choose the DCT because you can still run in manual mode and take advantage of the transmission on longer tarmack trips where it really shines.

Sounds like honest review, with-out super sweet blessings to Honda. How did you feel that excessive weight of this DCT ATAS? Regret that I didn't go for Outbeck Motortek crash-bars on my 2016 AT. At that time those were still in development mode... :-( I went for super heavy GIVI bars, looks cool, works well, but f£king heavy like hell.
@brandonglanville29916 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vladimir. The Outback Motortek crash bars and skid plate have been great. We have taken this bike into a couple of spots it should not have been and they have done their job with ease. Not a scratch on the bike. We really like the DCT actually. You definitely need to learn it and learn how to anticipate what it does, but it works really good.

I just want an action packed video with africa twin, am I asking for too much? It's so easy to make for guys like you, just take de intro and stretch it to 3-4 minutes. KTM has Birch and the 1190R had lots of videos and even the 1090R has some. Why is not Honda bringing some real offroad video material?

Producing videos is expensive and time-consuming. If we get an opportunity, we would love to do just that. We hear you though.

Does the Adventure Sport only come with the autotragic transmission?
@brandonglanville29916 жыл бұрын
They make a manual transmission version as well.
@PragmaticTornado6 жыл бұрын
No! I have a 2018 Adventure Sport with a manual transmission. I find it sad that video creators often don't mention this in their AT videos when they are riding the DCT models.
@brandonglanville29916 жыл бұрын
Sad? To be fair we were doing a piece on the DCT model and it specific capabilities and not the manual. Nor were we trying to draw any kind of comaparison... so why muddy the waters discussing other bikes that we weren't riding?
@PragmaticTornado6 жыл бұрын
Other bikes? It's the exact same bike, but with a manual transmission. Everything is the same apart from that (minus a few buttons on the handlebar and one on the right side of the speedometer). I think it's warranted notifying the viewers that you can, in fact, get this bike without DCT. Not everyone wants to ride an automatic bike. According to my local dealer, about half of the buyers want the manual version.
@ducfandan11176 жыл бұрын
Google is your friend... Secondly, this isn’t a fun-sucking slip and slush or CVT. It’s a DCT. That means it’s a real clutch, giving you a solid mechanical connection between engine and wheels... with smoother and quicker shifts than you’ll ever be able to manage manually. Plus, it helps get more riders in and keeps more riding. My shifter leg got partially disabled by a battle with cancer, and you know what? The DCT is keeping me riding. The number of narrow-minded obliviots constantly knocking this gearbox option is getting really old. Don’t like it? Don’t buy it. No need to b*tch about it as though Honda should drop it. It’s a fantastic option for some, gets and keeps more riders on two wheels.

MPG?
@brandonglanville29916 жыл бұрын
45 - 55 MPG seems to be the range for Africa Twins in general. The L2 has the same motor as the L1. We have been on the throttle kinda hard to push the bike and have not been doing an official MPG analysis.

Any rumors about changes the 2019 AT might come with?
@brandonglanville29916 жыл бұрын
Rumors? That is the 2019 AT Adventure Sports. The regular AT (L1) is unchanged excepts for the electronics which are the same as the L2 described in the video. the 2019's are in dealers now.
@kevn336 жыл бұрын
Brandon Glanville no way is that a 2019. The 2018's just first arrived at US dealers in the past couple months.
@brandonglanville29916 жыл бұрын
You are correct... I got confused and misspoke. Too many new bikes coming out or getting info on. As far as rumors for 2019 Africa Twin info. Not a peep yet. Not expecting much of an evolution with such a big launch this year.
@kellyabercrombie97696 жыл бұрын
Not a problem at all. Thanks for the correction.

Well, hopefully it will have a cruise control. There's no reason why it shouldn't with throttle by wire. If it had cruise control, an adjustable windshield and a black color scheme, it would be perfect. Can't stand the gold....

Pointless upgrades apart from the can
@UPSHIFT_ONLINE2 жыл бұрын
Pointless? The seat is a massive improvement unless you just run to Starbucks. The mirrors are the first thing we change and once you use Doubletake, you will never go back. The Outback Motortek crash bars have saved untold damage dropping this thing in the woods etc. The wheels are nice but not super necessary. We bent the stock wheels in the first week so they became necessary. And tires are whatever... everyone has their favorite.
