Felt disconnected from the road like the reviewer said. DCT is nice on long rides but also feels like something is lost. I love how you mention the rawness of the old bikes. I have a new Africa Twin, and I love it, but i do think that the computer and the bike take over some of the riding, and it limits how much I feel, and how in control I feel. I also ride dirtbikes and other streetbikes. I will say there is something I love about the absolute control I feel when I ride more simple manual designs. As you stated, it makes you feel like you earned every corner, and the entire trail. The more the bike does for me, the less sure of myself I am when I push my limits. Just a note. Love the new bike though. Very fun.

Kudos for doing the comparisons that us old guys think of. But, is it really going to be a surprise that modern bikes are always going to be “better” - better, smoother engines; more power; better suspension; better adjustability; better brakes, better ….well pretty much everything. I think that what this test, and every single other comparo between an old bike and a new bike will reveal is: There’s something lost in the ‘better’. Call it ‘soul’; call it ‘cool’; call it ‘feel’; call it. . . whatever. When you insert a computer to take over a rider’s function, something is lost! There’s something about old tech that puts a smile on the rider’s face that new tech just can’t match, even if the old bike is slower, poorly suspended, etc. Old school has its benefits! I’ve got a lot more bikes than a person should be allowed to own. Old and new. For the life of me, I have no logical reason why I should own a ’80 XT500, when I have a GS850, KLR650 or DL1000, because those bikes are demonstrably ‘better’ in every measurable way. And yet, when I kick that XT into life, it puts a huge smile on my face - it’s a friggen hoot. Every one of your comparos is going to show the same thing. I’m subscribed with a big thumbs up!

First ever time I stepped into a motorcycle shop, I was 14 and it was to see a 1992 Africa Twin. I didn’t really know what adventure was and I knew nothing about motorcycles…but that bike was so appealing, it reeked something I was craving for without knowing it! Took me another 12 years to decide to get my licence and again 6 years to buy the Twin! People were telling me « it’s sluggish » « it doesn’t handle » « it’s slow ». It was putting me down from trying the legend I imagined. They were all wrong! I had so much fun with it! I’ve had more than 25 bikes, from supermoto to superbikes, even Varadero and a Harley. The old Africa Twin have been my most fun years of riding! I was the guy that they couldn’t shake off on a mountain road even with twice the power, the guy that couldn’t behave in line, jumping every obstacle. The guy that cut everyone off (of the group) at the petrol station by jumping through the bushes. Lend the bike to a friend so he could take a girlfriend for a ride…he scrapped the footpegs…the passenger footpegs!!!! The new bike is amazing! But it just doesn’t have that feel! Too much…

in order for suspension comparisons to be drawn you must have fresh oil in the old bike's forks. that in itself is a huge factor in how the bike behaves in bumpy conditions. I love the idea behind this series, and can't wait for a 990 vs 1090 comparison.
@BrakeMagazine5 жыл бұрын
We could go to that level, without doubt, but even on gloopy old suspension, you still have an idea over the bikes suspension :) A brand new bike is always going to behave better than a 30 year old one, even if it's been refreshed. :)
@lkrogsgaard5 жыл бұрын
This is a good idea. I would really like to see the XTZ750 vs. Tenere 700. I have an old '91 Super Tenere, and i feels really old in some point. Just as you said here the suspension has gone a lot of way in 30 years, but i surprised me that you thought the older bike was lighter. The 1000 CRF has grown in size but still. The one main issue with my old Super Tenere, is that i really feel it to very heavy, with much of the weight in top. I recently drove a BMW F850GS, and it felt like 50 kgs lighter in the track, but they do weigh approx the same. I think the difference between the old S10 and the new T700, will be big.

And they're old and people have forgotten them - but they aren't ready to be forgotten. They still want to GO. I think we can sympathise with that more than we can with perfection.

How about BMW750GS vs the famous 650GS Single, people are saying that things evolve but BMW was totally unable to fill the gap over the 650. People tend to forget that it was produced for almost 15 years in several variations and it is still one of the most maneuverable bikes that ever existed with fantastic geometry, great fuel autonomy and just sheer control and trust. The race for more powerful engines seems so useless when I get back to ride on my 2006 650GS single, just makes you think of travelling around the world...

I drive a 1989 Africa Twin 650 almost daily (wetter not to nasty) and I upgraded the front suspension with progressive springs and a bit thicker oil and it totally transforms the bike. Instead of "crashing into rocks and potholes" etc. as you say, and generally flopp'n about due to the soft suspension, the handling improved massively. It will never be a modern generation AT, but it has become darn good for what it is. Flickable and very stable on motorways and on the twisties alike.

As automotive technician I like the DCT in Automatic S1 or S2 and in Manual in more complex and curvy roads. I changed my AfricaTwin tyres to Mitas E 07+ which I had on the R100GS also. Now my feeling is even better than the BMW. In the beginning was the higher gravity weight center point something I had to get custom to at the Honda. Since the other tyres I handle it as the last 10 years with the BMW. If I had not this wrist problems I would buy an old Africa Twin as well.

Old bikes are still fantastic too, have its place in riding to very remote places (like Africa) where the ability to repair on the fly is very important. If brands like Honda are serious about adventure/off-road bikes they'll keep the reliability and why not make it even better to ride the World with confidence.

Always remember a frenchman gunning along the beach in Dakar, Senegal. 2004. Saw the new one at the Honda dealer this year, the cockpit is huge, like a space shuttle. Happy to have bought a little crf300L.

I came to the Africa Twin from an 18year old Budget GSX750F which was a lovely bike took it around the Uk 🇬🇧 in my 50’s and early 60’s but at 67 the Crf1000l Dct makes a fantastic road bike for me and has allowed me to continue enjoying my motorcycle riding something that old Honda wouldn’t do the new Honda it’s a real pleasure loved this comparison

Why not the manual twin against the old one? This is not a good comparison. Anyway, that's how I think.

Same thoughts, the DCT gets unfair advantages in some places and disadvantages in others.
@philippday91955 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking this... STOP testing the DCT !!! please!!! it's the only thing every tester complains about. It's a fine option but takes time to learn/master... so don't test or compare with it. seems obvious
@BrakeMagazine5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure we didn't complain about the DCT, actually the opposite 😏 However, that's probably because that's the version Honda want to push. All our test bikes and manufacturer press fleet machines and that's the one Honda let us use. :) We'd have preffered not have DCT but in reality that's what Honda think is their best bike and for the end result of this test it didn't make a huge difference.
@Lexie_nl5 жыл бұрын
@@BrakeMagazine , It's just a big difference between DCT and manual. You can't ignore that, in my eyes it's not a good comparison. Can't make anything else out of it. Success with testing in the future remains fun to watch👍
@steeltube1955 жыл бұрын
I think if you´re going to do a "old vs new" you should get the most primitive and mechanical bike and put it against the more modern bike, that is the DCT. In all reviews, all testers like the DCT. I don´t know how that is possible, and probably, since I have a manual AT, I never will... but I don´t loose sleep over that anyway...

Great video. I've only been riding properly for a couple of years, and have only ridden older bikes. My daily ride is an '85 XT350, complete with weeping fork seals, damping rods, tired shock and kickstart only. People laugh when it won't start first kick, or when I'm fiddling with the pilot air screw to smooth out the idle, but I think that retro world is all about finding sweet spots, in clutch play and throttle blipping and jetting and timing the preload bounce for that wheelie. But I haven't ridden anything modern to compare that too. So when I'm struggling up a pig-track and Roger says "My GS would get up here easily" as he whips along on his CRF, I tell myself its because the sweet spot on those came factory-fitted.

I have been watching Videos (Tests, Techtalks etc) on the new Honda for quite some time now. This is by far the best picture of it without actually sitting down on one of these and giving it a go! There are still a lot of classic Africa Twins on the market in Germany so there really is a decision to be made here. Thank you so much for making this Video. I will be thinking about you when I'm getting and riding mine.

Thinking about it... Would it be possible to compare old and new RALLYRAID kitted offerings of the CB500? (seeing as you're more off-road dualsport orientated) Just trying to think of an accessible all-round midweight and mid cc'd bike that can cope well with everyday 50 mile commuting but also be fun and capable on the days you want some green lane and offroad exploring. 😁

Dank Frenk Visser I can see that solid logic. KTM 640 vs 790. KTM 990/950 vs 1x90. I personally drink that sweet, nutritious orange 990 koolaid as she was, like the 640, based on a racing legend for dominating the Dakar Rally. 990 comparison first,... then 640. LOL 😉

Great video. I get all nostalgic when I see the old Africa Twins because that was the first bike that I ever sat pillion on as a child, and instantly fell in love with it when I got airborne off it over a humpback bridge. Really loving the look and reviews of the new bike, and especially keen to try a DCT. Perhaps for your next video get that new T7 against one of the old 80’s Ténérés?
@ronanrogers41275 жыл бұрын
BTW a better comparison would have been between the non-DCT and the old Africa Twin, that way you could have focused on the key areas of difference that apply not only to these two bikes, but to pretty much all of today’s bikes, and to 30 yr old bikes. The DCT only appears on one model and is outsold by regular transmission anyway.

I have a 2004 DL1000 and love it. My friend just bought a 2018 1000 and he love that one too. The new one is a bit lighter but they replaced some of the metal with plastic. The new one does not have the room for tool kit and such under the seat like the Gen1 does. Then it comes down to how much you want the antilock breaks and the electronics. But I agree I would like to see these guys do a comparison vid as well.

@@mctourer5549 Nice summary thanks. I've got the 2007 DL 650 and love it! only thing that annoys me is the parking lights that come on a tiny click more to the left of the steering lock. Happened to me TWICE that when locking key slipped tiny bit to the left (lights on) and left me with an empty (=broken) battery.:-o

This was a great comparison, my first dual purpose bika was Kawasaki Tengai 500cc (this bike was actually a KLR dowsised from 650cc to comply with imports rules in Mexico back in 1990), then a 30th anniversay GS1200 Adventure, then a Yamaha Tenere XTZ 660cc and right now a Honda Africa Twin CRF1000 DCT, so you made my day with this video and I agree with your comments, could you made another video comparing Teneres? My biggest complain with the 660 was the lack of power to maintain road speeds, but I feel like the new T7 could be the perfect dual purpose bike for real dual purpose riders, thank you guys.

Multiple things to take into consideration. Most RD04 or RD03 ( the 88 650 ) are Honda meaning they are so reliable very few people do the correct prescriptive maintenance. I drove a few different one and some can be night and day between models. My RD03 is brand spanking new and doesn't feel nowhere near as 90% of other bikes hope you tried one that was fresh too. For cruising mine is the 650 not even the 750 and will sit all day under the sun or rain at 75mph no problem at all. As for the new crf1000, the act will always feel vague and so is this model with the throttle by wire. Try a 2016-17 manual with a proper cable throttle, it is night and day.
