The new Si should have been 230hp...50 more than the Sport and 75 less than the Type R. That would have better separated the three models, while still leaving the R clearly on top.

I got the 2018 SI coup as a gas saver vs my Raptor. I looked at all the Civics as well as the competition including - 5.0 GT mustang, Porsche Cayman, Audi S4 and Subi WRX STI. I chose the Honda SI over all because = 1- price, it was on sale plus some manufacturers rebates at only $22,500 USD 2- best MPG for the power 3- Great shifting transmission and clutch action 4- best fun for so little money (total cost to own is what I really mean) you can up grade tires, exhaust, tune etc. plus use up wear items (clutch, brakes, etc) which are inexpensive. 5- so easy to drive, park, use. (VS my 4x4 truck or Vett) because it’s small and cheap I can fit any in space plus who cares if it gets beat up or scratched. It was purchased to be use. This little rice bucket never ceases to put a smile on my face each and every time I drive it.

@@2003evodave I just got one thursday. I came from a 2013 Jeep Srt8. Everyone thought I was nuts for the trade until they drove it. I absolutely love this car. I’ve owned almost every gen of the Si and the new 10th gen platform is amazing and by far my favorite. I have an 18 4 door Si and absolutely love it. The new turbo 1.5 absolutely pulls. The torque comes in low and the thing pulls like a freight train. The chassis is great! The great handling matched with the LSD transmission makes this think an absolute blast in the twisties. I’ve seen 42 mpg’s on the hwy and usually get 32 around town but some days I get as low as 20 if I’m ripping on it. With just an air intake you get all the awesome turbo noises. Go for it, you’ll love it.

Hi Alex, nice video! I just bought the Si a week ago, having talked myself down from wanting the Type R, and I have no regrets. I upgraded from a 2012 Civic EX so to me the Si has considerable more punch, way better handling, and i find myself staring at it in my driveway through the windows in my house hehe. I am so careful with this thing that I feel if i had gotten the Type R it would be too much. I would be scared to drive it, park it, basically use it. Maybe in a few years I will trade up but for now I am really happy with the Si. I'm getting 28 MPG too.

For anyone looking at the Si. I went with a black coupe and the roof line reminds me vaguely of the new NSX. The fuel economy is amazing. I've been pushing it a bit more than usual this week and I'm still at 36 mpg. One thing I've noticed as I've driven it ~2500 miles now is, although it's a turbo and the power dips after 5500rpm, it's an eager revver and really moves! It'll put you in your seat and before you know it, your accelerating hard past 80mph and it still wants to keep going. It's a really fun car and the handling is very good, I think it would be right with my Audi S4 on the mountain roads near my house. I'm loving this car.

As usual, Alex brings up some excellent points. Personally, I'm a hatchback fan, but I also like fun and performance. So I'm torn between the Sport hatch and the Si sedan. The Type-R is cool and all, but it's overkill for me personally. I'm not fond of the boy racer looks, and I don't need such a high level of performance. I want my Civic to be fun and fast, but also my daily driver. (For better or worse, my boy racer days are behind me now.) If Honda made a hatchback version of the Si, that's what I would buy. Sadly, that's not an option. And as good as the Sport hatch is, as a perfectionist, I know I'd keep thinking about that 15-20% that I would be missing (even if I couldn't feel it) if I bought the Sport. Is 20% extra performance worth $2000 extra dollars? That's a tough question, especially since I prefer a hatch to a sedan (or coupe).
@stevenjames11384 жыл бұрын
@Michael Bailey I ended up going with a used Toyota instead. It's slower but more reliable. While I like speed, I don't like tickets. So I subscribe to the "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow" school of thought. For the cars you've got, they need to be run on a track to really stretch their legs and have fun. Everyone's different, but I only have one car which must also be my daily driver, so Toyota reliability (and, likewise, naturally-aspirated engines) are my choice. You've got two very cool (and very fast) cars though. Enjoy them! But be careful not to get too many speeding tickets!

Agree completely with your conclusions. I have a loaded 2015 GTI and when the lease is up in the spring, I will probably get another one. I was hoping for a more upscale SI. Like you said, a dual clutch transmission, LED headlights, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, etc. However, I think Honda thinks that might move into Acura territory. For me, the type R is too impractical. I live in the North East and travel regionally. The tires on that car as is would wear out in several months, and the rims would probably be bent in the same amount of time as well. I actually like how it looks, but it’s a second car and I already have another vehicle.

Where I live, the insurance can be the most expensive part of a car ownership, and there is a huge difference in cost among different types of cars (e.g. coupe vs. sedan). Cars that apparently get involved in more crashes cost way more to insure. For example, FR-S. I think Civic Si becoming less of a "go-to" car for young & immature drivers may help lower the insurance cost, yet it has enough power for some fun, and I really do appreciate the LSD (very rare these days). Obviously, the sedan version will have lower insurance cost.

I don't know about the states, but typically an "Si with the DCT" is one of the reasons that Acura sells the ILX. I don't know about the US market, but In canada, Before the ILX, we had the CSX, and the EL. The whole point of those cars were "The sport of an Si, but more livable with a daily basis". They offered the auto as an option, leather seating, but other than that they were basically an Si. Building an Si with a turbo would pretty much make the ILX model obsolete.

Let's face it, any which way you cut it, most drivers do not push their cars to the limits out on city streets as it is. So in many ways what does handling really mean? Absolute grip, again out in the real world, or perhaps steering response which adds greatly to driving satisfaction? Both? I suggest you take one for a spin and decide for yourself. Honda has been inching up into RWD handling territory for some time with its FWD sport models. If times around a track are your gauge take a look at what they've been able to achieve. Look down the page here for what the Type R has achieved, lightly modified, but look at the heady equipment it was quicker than! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nordschleife_lap_times

You perfectly sum up my thoughts on the Si. The Si is fun but why spend a bunch more money over the Sport. If I spend that much I already have to sell my s2000 and my 8th gen Si and I could stretch for the type R if they come down. The one Caveat is that I am super skinny and think that the normal civic seats are very meh to unsupportive.
@ALMX5DP7 жыл бұрын
I dont know the interior feature differences, but the bump in power, limited slip diff and active dampers seem like a decent start to justify the $3k price difference. If interior changes are present that people like, it would make an even better case in my opinion.

The interior is the reason to get the Si over the Sport. You get the digital dash, the upgraded seats, a sunroof, and an upgraded sound system. The question is are you going to get an itch to mod it from stock. Thats where you are just better off getting the sport.

Idk if alot changed between 2018 and 2019 but the options list for the 19 civic si is like 2 pages long including the hfp package that offers coilovers with a 1inch drop and you will likely never find a type r at msrp not even close. They tend to put every option on them at the dealership bringing them up to the high 40k to low 50k. Just food for thought $1200 in bolt ons and a retune and you will be in the 300hp range and still have only spent 25k

Exactly!!! See this car is faster than the last Si. I own BOTH! And this 10th gen pulls like a beast between 1500-5k! But it doesn’t fall off past 5k it just doesn’t feel like it’s making power. I think it’s dumb to compare of sport hatch haha. Seriously it is nice though

New civic Si has 192 lb-ft of torque, not 177 as the video stated.

I’ve been looking at one of these with 71,000 miles on the clock. If I were to pick it up would that still be a good purchase or should I go with something else?

It's just a handful...not all. I own the 2018 and have none.

They're not having transmission problems. It's just operator error.

No more ADMU on Si’s. They’re leasing for between $179-199/mo now. Can’t beat that for a car in that range.

You really want this in an automatic. I like it BECAUSE it's only in a manual.

I definitely would go for the Si. Im a diehard manual transmission enthusiast. Also you cannot get a manual Civic Sport with Apple Carplay/Android Auto. For me, that's a deal breaker.

17 lbs isn't going to do alot for changing the weight balance. I'm not crazy about the exhaust note nor how it looks. HDMI ports are for data not gas outlets. They should bump up the power to mid 200s. PS best detailed review of the coupe I have run across for daily driving.

How does this compare to the Toyota 86 in the driving experience? That would have been an interesting competitor to add, since the new Civic seems to compare to some of the RWD offerings.

I agree with you about the dual clutch! Give me Acura's dual clutch. They are hardly using it!

Did I miss something or did you fail to mention that the required fuel for Civic Si is premium as opposed to regular. For those of us who are pragmatists, that adds considerably to the operating costs of this vehicle.

Hi Alex, thanks for the info. I have an Accord Touring and just bought my wife a 2018 Civic EX turbo. I'm not sure I like the CVT, takes some getting used to. I did drive an SI and really liked it. It definitely feels stronger than the EX. BTW, the dealer had a Type R, $46,000, ouch. Almost double the SI.

This car handles better than the new MX-5? Are you sure? lol. Im sure the Si handles very well... but the MX-5 is a ground up RWD sports car...

While not a true apples to apples comparison, I'd like to see a comparison of the civic hatchback sport and the hyundai elantra gt n line. Especially since you say the si isn't significantly better than the the civic sport.

Great car, just got one. Good time to get a 2017 coupe, they are discounting them. Paid over $4k under MSRP. South Florida market
