Chris, I’m glad you’re okay! As a lifelong truck driver I can tell you that he should have never backed up, never! He was completely in the wrong. Next as tidbit of information to help you in the future, never pull up closer than 50 feet behind a big rig regardless of what the traffic behind you thinks. Secondly, if at all possible make sure you can see the driver in their side mirror. What you saw him wearing was a hands free headset for making phone calls not headphones for music. No matter who you stop behind or what they’re driving always assume that they can’t see or hear you. Leave yourself an escape route at all times. And lastly I’m a Goldwing owner and rider as well.

May I add that just because you can see the mirror of the truck does not necessarily mean that the driver can see you. I also am a lifelong truck driver and a lifelong motorcycle rider. You really did nothing wrong, the driver should not have backed up at all PERIOD!. It would have saved the driver much more time and trouble by sucking it up and go forward to a safe place to turn around. Glad that you weren't seriously injured.

I hate to disparage truck drivers but we got a helluva lot of incompetent rookies on the road these days. One of the most important rules they teach and drill into truck drivers is you NEVER backup on a public road. There was a truck stop right across the road from what was said in the video and the truck driver knew it but chose to back up instead of just turning around in the truck stop - like I said earlier lot of incompetent drivers these days.

I’ve been driving big trucks for over 20yrs. Oftentimes when I’m being tailgated the only clue I have that someone is behind me is the shadow. Backing accidents are the most common type of accident involving big rigs, typically at truck stops and distribution centers. The acronym GOAL : Get Out and LOOK. Glad you’re ok.

Glad you were not very seriously hurt Cruiseman! 👍 My rule is to never be in a position behind a large truck whether while moving or standing still in traffic. If required, I will even split lanes to never find myself behind essentially a solid wall that you can not see through... ask me how I know, lesson learned🤯

Mile Marker Mike here. I'm retired Airforce and when we would have a flight incident we would do what is called a stand down. And we would have briefings to help people learn from the situation. As a motorcycle rider myself. Watching videos like yours at times is my form of stand down to remind myself that I have to be at attention not only for myself but for others around me. Yes! It sucks this happened to you. But making this video is very important because it is one more thing that we need to be aware of. There are a lot of people from other countries too that are driving these big rigs. So I always have to drive with caution. A day does not go by that something happens. Just the other day I had a young driver turn on his blinker to change lanes and I was in line with him. All he had to do is look out the windown and see me. And he started to move over. I hit my horn and he pulled back. When I'm passing or next to a car I always move to position number one to stay as far as I can so I have room to act. Don't beat yourself up. Things happen. And as we say in the Air Force when we are landing a plane. Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. I'm glad you were able to walk away from this. Your instincts acted the way it was suppose to. Get yourself out of harms way. Thanks for all that you do.

Great comments sir, and thank you for your service to the country! I'm a veteran myself, and coming to the end of my law enforcement career. There are so many CMV drivers on the roads, where the drivers are from foreign countries. And NOT that there is anything wrong with that, everybody needs a job. There are some very good drivers on the roads, and as many bad ones. I know I'm preaching to the choir. I'm an avid motorcyclist myself, having been a motor officer as well. Defensive driving/riding is the easiest rule to remember. CG got very lucky and glad he's ok. At best a very bruised ego and pride.

I drive big trucks and motorcycles almost all of my life. It's best to stay in eye sight of the mirrors on the truck. But a professional truck driver would had went straight and turned around and come back to where he miss his turned. I am very thankful that you were alright. If the motorcycle had fallen you might had more injuries. Thanks for your video.

Takes a lot of courage to openly discuss this whole incident. 100% the truck drivers fault for not checking his blind spot but there were certainly opportunities to change the outcome. I'm sure there will be a few "2nd guessers" who will chime in here, but the bottom line is you survived what could have been a catastrophic event! Glad you're ok!
@killer2600
@killer2600 Жыл бұрын
It's not possible to check that blind spot, it's called a "blind" spot for a reason. The truck driver was at fault for backing up on a public road and hitting something. The driver should have known/been taught to NEVER backup on a public road - even in a stale mate with a car where one of them needs to backup the truck will NEVER be the one to backup.

Hi Sir, I have been watching many of your videos over here in Germany, thanks for all the contents you're creating. I'm glad you survived this freak situation unscathed. Would like to add a little consideration concerning trucks: German Autobahns are not only highspeed roads, they are also notoriously congested, meaning pile-ups can occur frequently and suddenly. A high percentage of the often resulting accidents are caused by trucks not able to break in time. Having witnessed the carnage when a 40 tonner hit standing traffic, I've made a point of always checking what's going on behind me in case of traffic suddenly slowing down or coming to a standstill. Not to mention avoiding the 'dead angle' - trucks switching lanes in tight conditions can pose a hazard too. Safe travels everyone

Two long time friends were drivers for decades, both just retiredl and said the same thing as you. Bottom of the barrel people behind the steering wheels and it is very dangerous out there, even in truck stops! Companies not investing in quality hires and training. Lots of stories of new drivers paired with "company trainers" who basically sleep the whole time and don't help the newbie become better. Very little work ethic out there now, sad. Glad you survived 42 years.

Not all but the numbers of them go up daily as the industry rushes to fill the job openings with anyone with a pulse. I'm fortunate/unfortunate to frequent an area where many of these fresh rookies traverse for a certain company that hires loads of them, many of these drivers running actual loads for money can't even drive on the highway and the ones that do can't even do 55 mph (they typically drive 45 mph in a 55 where cars are often driving 65).

I'm not a mechanic, but am pretty motorcycle savvy. Trauma to the steering head is generally not repairable, and I wouldn't trust a repair to that critical component. Glad to hear you're pretty much okay. I had my 1995 Gold Wing totaled when a roofing truck and trailer pulled into my lane from a stopped lane and I tagged the trailer and I slid in my gear down the freeway. I was totally uninjured. The driver in my situation was cited.

Glad you are okay Cruiseman! Good lesson and wakeup call for all of us. I've been riding over 40 years, and my only accident was almost the same situation. I was behind a work van in a right turn lane. I didn't expect them to stop ~ 30 feet before the turn. I came to a stop ~15 feet behind them. Then he started backing up and I couldn't get out of the way fast enough. Turns out there was a driveway entrance to a business that he had missed. He couldn't hear the horn on my bike. Lots of witnesses to attest that I was fully stopped and he backed into me. I'll take this as a reminder to keep back and try to stay in view of their mirror - whether it is a semi, work van, SVU, or even a car. p.s - your maintenance videos are excellent and already helped me installing accessories on my 2021 GW.

Sorry for your troubles. Several years ago I was run off I-10 West bound just East of Houston by a Semi. I was towing a small cargo trailer with my 1500 Wing. Luckily I was able to get to the shoulder. I was passing the semi on the right and he decided that he needed to be in my lane. I always kept my CB on Ch 19 when riding solo. I heard a trucker behind us both let the driver coming into my lane know what was happening and he moved back into the center lane. I was able to get back onto the freeway without mishap and get past the semi. Apology was offered and I accepted. Since that incident, I always would give a shout out to truckers to let them know that I was passing before I overtook them. I don't have a CB on my '19 GW but I do hit the pulsating headlights before I overtake semis now. I respect truckers and will give them the right of way if I feel I need to . I also try to stop in their rear view mirrors if I am caught at a stop behind one. Glad you are physically OK.

Well done Cruiseman for letting everyone learn from your situation and remind us experienced riders it can still hapen to us, maintain vigilance and don't get complacent. In Australia there are stickers on the back of trucks "If You Can't See My Mirrors I Can't See You" . That said, it's never a good Idea to back a semi truck on public roads because unless you have a rear camera you can't see directly behind you. Also when I'm backing up a truck in depot yards I have the radio off and windows down so you can hear anyone yelling or horns trying to warn you. When I ride I assume NO ONE can see me and always have an exit stratagey. I never park behind a vehicle when at stop signs and traffic lights. I always park to the side because i've seen so many rear ender's in traffic because some muppet is on their phone, turns out would be good for your situation as well! Take care.

Good to hear that you're ok. I think you're going to find that the damage is deeper and more extensive than first visual inspection. Not only is the fork aluminum, the frame is also. It may have cracks. If that is possible that the frame is compromised then the bike will be totaled. As for the trucker not hearing your horn, when you are right up behind the truck the sound of the horn is directed under the trailer. Important thing is that you're ok.

Chris, as someone close to your age who's been an officer for 38 years, I can tell you that adrenaline is a wonderful thing. I've plead with some people to go get checked out, but they signed a refusal with EMS. Then I hear EMS sent to their house a few hours later because they can't get out of their chair. If EMS is on the way & you say you don't want them, I don't listen to you. I want them to check you out and give you every opportunity to get checked out at the hospital. If you're sore or in pain at the very least go to your doctor. I was run over by a meth addict a few years ago, and was ordered by my supervisor not to seek medical attention (long story). I ended up having a concussion and whiplash, with continuing issues to this day.

Glad you’re okay, hindsight is always 20/20 and although we know being in lane position 1 would’ve been ideal like you said, we all (myself included) wouldn’t have thought that in a normal traffic flow. Thx for sharing so we all can learn from this, much respect!

Happily you were able-bodied bailing off your Goldwing. Max @Traxxion Dynamics will be selling many more engine guard bash plates with your forklift dismount video. Thank you for sharing with the Goldwing community. Get some good rest. Be well and ride safely. Lessons learned in real life adventures. 💯

Hello Cruiseman! I’m so sorry your beautiful bike took such a big hit! I am glad you are o.k., outside of some pain. I want you to know, that you experienced and lived through one of my worse fears when I’m on my bike: I have been rear ended before and survived, but I’ve always wondered if I could get out of the way if someone in a big rig like that were to start backing up. Now, I know that it would be a challenge at best with such a heavy bike, but seeing your situation provided some valuable lesions for me! I hope you’re riding again soon. Loyal.

Cruiseman, I'm glad your O.K. Because of the shortage of truck drivers, which occurred over the last two years, truck driving training schools are puting out drivers with no experience in two months with full hazmat endorsements, and trucking companies are hiring them. I met a young couple in florida who just completed their training. It's frightening!!!

Glad you’re OK! A truck backed out into my white 2019 Goldwing tour DCT while I was driving around 10mph. It caused enough damage in the front to total the bike. $20,000 of damage! Their insurance bought me a new 2020 replacement!

Good that you're not seriously hurt or not worse than how you're feeling, I don't think you can be ever be completely prepared for what all can happen. You reacted good and didn't get hurt any worse!

Glad you're whole Chris, this is scary and very unexpected. Easy to second guess or comment on the missteps, but it's hard to do every maneuver textbook, every time, all the time - we all shave bits off on the margins every now and then and a couple here caught up. Fingers crossed you go OK with insurance, only time I've been hit, the woman's insurance said I was 40% at fault because I should have avoided her (as she turned left into 3 lanes of oncoming traffic where the oncoming traffic (me) had the right of way), and struck me - thankfully that didn't stick. Take care and hope you heal up fast!

😅Wow! That is so scary. Glad you are ok I had a car at an intersection decide to back up when a pedestrian walked through the intersection and it was a close call. He just threw it in reverse and without looking in his rear view mirror just backed up. Lesson here is keep a cars length distance cushion of space. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's good knowledge for us all.

Wow! Great to know you’re somewhat fine, many lessons learned here for all who ride motorcycles, it’s always better to keep the 360 cam or any camera running alll the time you ride cuz you never know what’s gonna happen, hope you can get the goldwing fixed.

I'm very happy you are OK. The GW can be fixed. I had a very similar thing same thing happen to me when I was 20. I was riding my HD Sportster and a van stopped behind me then backed up. I pulled my bike back as much as i could until it hit me then jumped and started banging on the van. Ever since I stop to the side whenever I am behind a vehicle that might back up then I can go one side or the other if the inevitable occurs. After 40 years after that, it has been close a couple times. I'm happy for your good health.
