2018 Jaguar E-Pace review | Small Jaguar SUV driven | Autocar

The all-new Jaguar E-Pace is Jaguar’s first attempt at a compact SUV: the kind of car that will rival the Audi Q2 and Q3, and BMW’s X1 and, a bit, the X3. Subscribe now: smarturl.it/autocar
At 4.4m long it’s a pretty compact car, and one based on Land Rover’s Evoque and Discovery Sport architecture. Which means it’s the first Jaguar that can be had with front-wheel drive since the X-Type.
Our test E-Pace is not front-drive: it’s a 296bhp (300hp) range-topper, driving all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system that shares a fair amount with the one in a Ford Focus RS. But all of that means that it costs close to £50,000 in this specification.
Jaguar says that the E-Pace is meant to drive like an XE. But can a tall, predominantly front-drive SUV really drive like a Jaguar saloon? And even if it can, is it worth the money that Jaguar is asking for this top-spec version?

I am fascinated to find that Matt has come to exactly the same conclusion as I did even though I was just in the showroom....it is a nice car...nice...but nothing makes me want it..it is a bland, Jaguarish box of good enough things done quite well. The engine is alright...it gets you there, the gearbox is good enough and it looks pleasant in an “old Quashquai “ kind of way. So now...yep...Porsche here I come...and I am a long term Jaguar Land Rover fan...but not of their current ranges I am afraid. 🤔🤔🙃

The point is that this may well be a “Casio” but that doesn’t mean it has to be so bland...a shrunken F Pace. Being “good enough” is not enough and in the showroom “Launch Night”, not one person actually was inspired enough to buy one! Also...the First Edition is £51,035 which means a similar Macan 2.0S is actually cheaper and a 3.0Sd is easily available for little more. Trust me...try a Macan and you will see why it is a vastly nicer car to drive. As for Rolex.....I have a 1949 one that was my father’s....and a Macan Turbo on order after trying the current JLR cars.🙂

As opposed to Russian doll design couldn't disagree more - this is an F-type inspired SUV. For those not privileged enuff to afford a Macan turbo they could perhaps afford something with sporting aspirations and character...

Hugh Denniston they should have made the Jag a bit cheaper, especially for the petrol models. This is a really tough segment now. I would say the XC40 might just edge out the Jag with the nicer interior

Well he is flat out wrong and saying just sayin'. So double pointless points. BMW's naming convention differs from Audi's. The X series is one size up from the saloons. So the X1 is 3 series sized, the X3 is 5 series sized. Then their i series is one size down from the saloons. i3 is 1 series sized. The forth coming i5 will be 3 series sized.

Del Mac the Q5 is in a tier above, and competes with vehicles such as the GLC, X4 and others. The E-pace is a micro SUV and it isn't even a bargain. I don't feel like it's worth $64k at all but that's just me. I could get into a SQ5 for that price, but who sells more the Brits or the Germans ? Thought so, maybe this is evidence why.

If you could read and retain it would help. I did state the German cars are mass produced, hence the mass produced comment. The E Pace is NOT a micro SUV, do you know anything? The E Pace starts from £28,500 while the Q5 starts from £38,000 so there is a big difference, the price you quote ($64k) is for a top of the range, if you did the same for the Q5 the price would shoot up as well. The Q5 is closer in size to the F Pace which starts at £34,000 so don't try and make out that Jaguars are over priced, you show lack of knowledge again. A true illiterate's way of thinking "but who sells more" - so in you uneducated world volume equals quality? I guess then that the best cars in the world are made by Ford and Toyota. You are a narrow minded twat.

Del Mac why are you getting so offensive and resorting to name calling ? High ego much, I live in Canada so our prices are different, I built a E-pace R-dynamic with a starting price of $51.000 plus the SE package which brings it up to $54k, keep in mind there is still the HSE above that. I went with the SE. No special wheels, not even fully loaded I picked out upgraded leather. A panoramic sunroof, sadly you have to pay 500 bucks for satellite radio, and the upgraded speakers for a total of $63K., keep in mind that's not even top of the line for a vehicle the size of a jeep compass. I built a Audi Q5 with the same options I built the jag with, and with Audi alot more is standard, so a fully loaded Audi Q5 technik for $58k for a bigger vehicle ? Come on now the jag has no value to it.

Del Mac Nor did I say the best cars are the most sold, but the Germans have more interior quality and better materials then jaguar, sure when the E-pace hits dealers I'll take it for a ride, but for the price They are asking I can get more technology in the Audi for cheaper, ask yourself if you would cough out $64000 For a vehicle something small. Hell id much rather consider it's competitor, the XC40 With every option for $52000, you don't see my point but I ain't hating. I just don't see any value in this product
