2018 Mustang GT: Whipple Supercharger IN DEPTH Street Review

Dyno numbers are cool and all, but what about the drivability aspect of a supercharger kit?
We recently installed the new 3.0L Gen 5 Whipple Supercharger kit on our 2018 Mustang GT and tuned it with Whipple's Factory calibration. Not only did the car make over 700rwhp, but it retained the 2018s smooth ride.

Great job I have a 16 with the stage2 Whipple it’s making 729 rwp and I blew the my-82 up so now running the Tremec T56xl with 2.97 first gear best pass 11.2 but I’m still spinning in 1-3 gears on nitto drag radials 30535/19 so gotta look for something else any suggestions

For better traction I'd definitely recommend a good drag radial like one from Mickey Thompson or Hoosier. Choosing the size will depend on what wheel you plan on running them with. For the suspension setup we've got a great entry level package called the Biscuits and Gravy kit. LP-PWR-S550BG. Those are the essentials. The next step up from there would be our Bread and Butter Package. LP-PWR-S550BB. That's the setup we run on our 18. I do have a question regarding pulley sizes. Starting off, im in cali and we only have 91 octane. Looked at whipples tech info on this unit and it seems to suggest that pully size 3.75 inches and smaller require 93 or higher. Is this true or can you still go all out on, say a 3.5 pulley on 91? I ask because the carb certification for this unit lists all pulley sizes as legal. Just dont know if its ok with only 91 to run smaller sized pulleys.

Redfire 281 you can run the kit on 91 with the pulley that comes with it. I wouldn’t suggest running the 3.50 on 91 though. That’s definitely not recommended. You’ll need more octane to run the 3.50 safely. Let us know if you have any other questions.

darknight160 they’ve been holding up very well. There’s a few cars making over 1000rwhp running high 8’s and low 9’s without any issues. Only time will tell.

Maldwin Drummond the roush blower is rated at 700 crank hp. Whipple stage 1 is rated around 750+ crank hp and stage 2 somewhere over 815 + crank hp. Depends on things like pulley size and fuel octane(91, or 93+)

IAT's aren't a thing anymore with the new Gen 5 kits from Whipple. Their intercooler setup is unreal. Super efficient with zero heat soak. Even at 18-19 psi we never had timing pulled from high IATs.

Hey John, The Whipple calibration is 50 state legal and isn't designed to run longtubes without cats. However on our car we ran it that way and didn't have any issues. Eventually if you run an offroad setup on their tune you will throw a CEL light. Whipple also won't turn off any emissions stuff in their tunes so if you want optimum performance for an offroad setup we recommend getting a custom tune. I wish I could give you an accurate number of what that will cost but we're not an installation facility here so I've got no idea how a shop will quote it. F150 is rather different 5.0. For starters, the F150 5.0 has “slightly weaker”, different internals and the F150 5.0 is”FlexFuel” rated, as in you can use E16-E85, whereas the Mustang 5.0 is not FlexFuel/E85, yet many idiots run it. Build the motor and then it’ll drink E all day. The F’s 5.0 has 385-390 hp vs 460. That is a large margin. Build up the block, upgrade the oil pump gears and rear axles then swap in the much more efficient, refined 10R90 from the Camaro and you'll be done. That 10R90 is sourced from the GM full size SUV/PU line.

The intercooler really doesn't require maintenance nor have we ever had a failure with one of Whipple's cores. If for some reason you have a failure you'd want to reach out to Whipple and purchase the replacement core.

Our diff was whining after our 2nd trip to the track. Then we added some suspension stuff which increased the noise feedback through the car. We'll get the diff replaced at some point but it's not too much of a priority for us at this point.

We're not quite sure of that. Our experience with 3 of our MT-82 cars has been great. The quickest of them being our 2015 GT that went 9.7@150 with the stock MT-82. With that said we've seen others with way less power have failures. I'm sure there's lots of things that contribute to the failures out there not just one single issue that causes it.

ya i think that it comes down to how the car is driven; i don't think any transmission likes 5-6g clutch dumps and missed shifts lol. I think if a couple things like the shifter and changing to poly bushings in all the mounts were taken care of then the transmission should survive provided it is abused properly. Glad to hear that it can handle "big power" though.

Adding aftermarket parts to an automobile doesn't automatically void the vehicles warranty. There's laws that protect people from that. You may want to do some reading on it to get a little more familiar with how it works. It's called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Hope that helps.

Stangmode had removed seats, exhaust, drag radials and did suspension stuff to get mid 11's...I know, because I've done exactly the same stuff on my '18 A10 (except taking the front pass and rear seat out) and I run 11.6 @120 in a E85 tuned base GT.

Engine is totally different than a 2015-17 from the internals, the dual fuel system, crank, the heads, intake manifold, cams, etc. It is an all new engine. Which is why I avoided buying first year and second year (2019). These new 5.0's are almost a 5.1L rounded down, whereas the old 2011-2017 motors are 4.9L rounded up. Plus people need to understand that the Mustangs motor is not E85 compatible. It can take upto E15 occasionally E20. The F150 5.0 is an evolution of the Crown Vic's 4.6L then 4.9L and has always been FlexFuel. The engine itself is not made for E85 whereas the F150 5.0 is. I have personal experiences with E30-E80 in a non FlexFuel engine, my 2013 5.0.... it corroded the internals and did other damage. Despite upgrading the fuel system and lines, we can't upgrade the engine unless we swap it out for the 395 hp F150's. But that engine's safe limit is to about 660-675hp crank, beyond that is at your own risk. so I'd 100 race gas or mix Torco for a 95 octane mix and had a self tuning tune that adjusts to weather, elevation, fuel etc on the fly. Os if you have lots of $$$ in the bank and it seems most of you that have videos do, then knock yourself out and play E85 or 50. Jsut know it won't last long. Engine and drivablity could start to occur after 500 miles or 12,000.... just throwing it out there.

Plus the 3.0 Whipple is their first upside down inverted supercharger. It is reversed. Completely new design from scratch for the new engine. The intercooler is now on top of the supercharger and of course the dual fuel system.

Utah county Picazo's page Whipple provides a bit less torque which is better for traction and much more HP potential especially on pump gas. With an auto there’s little point to more low end torque then the Whipple provides, the auto will just down shift on ya.

No ticks. motor had 3,000 miles on it when I installed it. It through a misfire in first thousand revolutions upon start up code. So I was talking to tech support and was advised to switch plug then injector. So I did both items.

Haro Master it really depends on which setup you go with and what fuel you run. The stage 2 is what we’re running which has the larger throttle body. We made 755rwhp with it using the 3.75” pulley and 93 octane with some octane booster for safety.

As you are talking about a daily driver and as you just talk about the good stuff, what about talking about what is happening a the fuel gauge? I understand that it's going to dry the tank very quickly when driving spirited, and that's fair enough, but what about the fuel gauge/consumption when driving it as a daily driver, driving at legal speeds (local area/ highway) compared with stock. How about a bit more disclosure to customers?

Thanks for the comment. Fuel economy when driving normal will be very close to factory as you're not creating more power that requires more fuel consumption. Only when you get into boost and create more power does the engine require more fuel.

To bad ford cant put out a 1/4 mi ready street mustang like Dodge is doing with the 2019 Chally RT Scat 1320 edition. It gets gets the Demons trans-brake, upgraded rear half shafts, suspension, drag radials, engine cooling goodies from the Dermon and only a drivers seat however full interior can be had for $3000 more. $44k. Dodge says 11.6 to 11.7 sec @115-117. The 1/4 time pumles the Mustang.

Scott wads you’ve obviously never owned a s550 mustang. Engine is stout north or 800whp with just oil pump gears and crank sprocket gear. The 6r80 in my opinion is the strongest most reliable auto trans ford has ever produced. I myself have a Whipple 2017 gt mt82 with every bolt on possible making 722whp and its been going strong for many miles. Granted the mt82 isn’t a strong trans but the autos are incredible. Many components in the motor of the mustang are forged from factory. They take power and boost very well

Donald Smith You just don’t know ford like I know ford there is not been a year since 1995 that they haven’t produced hundreds of thousands vehicles with Mechanical and other flaws to save a few bucks on a part or many parts. I remember those that owned, power strokes bragging they Best diesel engine in the world with 20,000 miles on their diesel park next to a dodge that was 10 years old and had half million miles on it and would double that. I don’t care how well your car is running right now there is a part on there that they made a nickel extra like shaving off the quality and or designing it to fail prematurely you have to spend north of 50 grand to get quality at a Ford . it’s no surprise That they built some quality into it in 2019 the new mustangs will be 100 grand because that’s the only way ford can make a profit .trust me I’ll be right and within a few short years you won’t be able to purchase a Mustang for less than 100 grand, they are a one trick pony for the wealthy not for the average Americans that’s why everybody’s running over to Dodge

Scott wads did you just compare a dodge product as being better quality than a ford product? You can’t be serious right now... And as for Chevy, the camaros are blowing up motors like crazy with just bolt ons. Now don’t get me wrong, many ls motors are great and can handle great power, but the new ls motors are horrible. These coyote motors and taking a beating with north of 1000hp and hold up just fine. Many people can attest to that. Every brand has a flaw somewhere but ford is so far ahead of the game it’s not even funny. No one can compete with them and their sales show that. Yes the hellcat and demon are awesome vehicles, but for way less money you can make more power and have more reliability out of a coyote any day of the week. That’s just my opinion. Malachi Jones idk I guess everyone prefers something different. I prefer the 10 speed auto. The transmissions suck with the stick shift in the 18 mustangs tho. They break down too much, no problems with the auto.

I totally understand preferring a manual car, but the review is about the power adder primarily. Regardless, no one wants to force you to drive an automatic. The 10R80 is simply quicker, more reliable. We're sort of entering that revolving door again, where the manual transmissions can't hold up to the power potential of these modern engines.. Third gen Camaros with the L98 back in their day, only available with a 700R4 auto. 305 TPI cars blowing non-world-class T5s, lol. At this point, however, it's unlikely that we'll see any manuals advanced beyond the performance of the TR-6060. I would have no doubt pondered buying a manual 2018 5.0 had it been offered with a TR-6060.
