My buddy has a big rig…he does long haul…his Freightliner has an N14 Cummins and he bought it new and does all his own light mechanic work and maintenance…he’s an absolute freak when it comes to maintenance…these rigs will go 20,000-30,000 miles on an oil change…he did his every 15,000 with Esso XD3 when they made it and then went to Mobile 1…he put a quart of ATF in every oil change and a quart in the fuel tank when he filled up…after about 2 million miles without putting a wrench on it the engine was starting to get a little tired so he took it to Cummins to rebuild it…they wanted $30k to rebuild it but couldn’t believe the mileage on it and figured this was at least its second…he said he never touched the engine so they called Cummins Corporate and Cummins offered him a brand new long block crate engine for the same price if he would give them his old engine so they could do a tear down on it to try and figure out how it lasted so long…so that’s a testament to how important maintenance is!..change your oil people!!

The N14 has a "robust" bottom end to say the least. You keep it well maintained and it will last a very long time as evidenced here.

@@ronaldrussell5481 he also doesn’t drive the truck hard which helps a lot too…I worked with a guy in Alberta who drove a heavy spec Kenworth winch truck and it had a 575 Cat in it and it was coming up on its bearing roll-in schedule which was likely 500,000-750,000 kms, and he took it straight to Cat and the mechanic dropped the pan and pulled the cape and measured the main bearing clearance on all of them and he said they were all the same as new bearings and so there was no point in replacing new with new so he buttoned it up and told him to keep doing what he was doing…I couldn’t tell you his oil change intervals but he was definitely a fanatic about his truck and one other important point he told me was he never drove faster than 90km/hr…so driving habits also increases engine longevity as well…a new engine today is gonna run a fella close to $50k these days so it’s probably a good idea to consider taking car of your rig!

I own a 2013 Nissan NV2500 HD with the 4.0L V6. It has just over 430,000 original miles on it with the original motor and transmission. I am the second owner and it’s had 5,000 mile oil change intervals since it was new. These vans are solid if you take care of them. So sad to see this one being neglected like that.

@@dadgarage7966 After 2009 2010 Nissan fixed the timing chain issues in the 4.0V6. Super durable Motor when you maintain them. Also not direct injected like the New 3.8 and the New 5.6 V8. The 4.0 is a bit of a gas hog. But they will run forever when maintained properly. As good if not better than any Honda or Toyota power plant,

VQ motors have been around for a while, chains usually start stretching around 300k. i had 2 Maximas back in the day.

@@dadgarage7966 I did replace the timing chains, tensioners, and water pump at 320,000 miles because I started hearing a slight rattling noise on start up, but when I got into the motor the chains were not excessively loose.I honestly think they were fine and it was a pulley bearing I was hearing. I finished the job anyway as preventative maintenance since the engine had high mileage. I did all the work myself and it was very labor intensive, but I saved over a thousand dollars doing it myself even with using all OEM parts. The van has ran great for over 100,000 miles since the repair. I own a business and this is my primary work van. I maintain it religiously.

Nissan tech here. I’ve replaced short blocks on those engines for the rod knock issues. I’ve never seen one as bad as that. I bet that engine never had an oil change. They probably just kept topping it up

@@rickfrey6944 It’s still possible that your v8 could develop that knocking issue. Nissan said they made updates to the short blocks but I’ve seen a few have it happen again. Just make sure you do your oil changes on time. Other common issues we’ve seen is upper oil pans leaking and timing covers leaking.

Thank you for the part about "They don't make them like they used to" I own modern vehicles and classics with carburetors and every time a friend says "I should get an old car" I lecture them about how much work they are. Yes, you can fix them yourself with hand tools if you know what you are doing but they will require constant maintenance and won't be reliable like modern automobiles or nearly as comfortable or economical.

2009 Armada here pushing 160K on the old 5.6L V8. Used to do 3000mile changes. Switched to Amsoil in 2010 and religiously tested the oil. Now doing 10000mile/annual oil changes and analysis showed that's the max life of that oil. 2024 and that engine still running strong and no mechanical issues.

I always say this every time. Its way cheaper and easier to change the oil , than an entire motor. This statement can be applied to anything on a vehicle, Transmission, axle, transferase, coolant ect, and I drill this into anyone who I encounter with car issues.

I completely agree with you. I think people today have deliberate indifference to what maintenance needs to occur. Differential fluid is overlooked often... Transmission fluid is not lifetime.. coolant fluid is not lifetime... I'm sure I'm missing other fluids and components that should be serviced

@@ryen49 AFAIK, the Pathfinder Armada name was unique to 2004 models and abandoned thereafter in favor of just “Armada”. Nissan did slap the V8 in the smaller Pathfinder for a few years, but only made a few hundred examples. Pretty unique vehicle to find.

Bought a new Toyota 4Runner, 2022… came with a 2 year free service deal. As a life long technician, I’ve seen enough young dudes on the lube rack, and the consequences thereof. Also, as an OLD tech, I have a 9000 lb twin post lift in my garage, and have done every oil change, 5000 miles apart. In my glovebox, I have every oil filter box flattened and rubber banded together, with date and mileage on them.

Nostalgia is interesting. When I was in high school we got 60,000 miles out of a 1954 Merc until the engine needed rebuilt. Dad's old jeep required valve adjustment at 20,000 miles and had to grind the valves or engine rebuild at 40,000 miles. Today's engines hold up well IF PEOPLE WILL JUST CHANGE THEIR DANG OIL.

What a waste of time and money. Junk yard motor is a junkyard motor. Complete rebuild of the original motor is the way to go. Unless it is trashed and cracked. This definitely makes it evident why Dave’s shop stands out from the rest Had to replace the engine on my fathers 2011 Impala Our budget wasn’t the best so we went with the lowest bidder You would think that common sense says clean the replacement engine and check it for leaks and damages (simply bc the maintenance history is unknown) Well don’t think that shop did that and I’m stuck with an engine that is leaking from somewhere and I am fed up with having to take it back and forth to the shop Unfortunately for us we are in CA and budget wise we couldn’t make the trip to Dave’s shop to have them do the job I’m simply going to try to cut my losses and sell the car to someone who has some mechanical expertise and fix the leak issue

I've never done an oil change on my car because I don't know how. I get it serviced and oil and oil filter is changed then. My dad lives in another state, and has some car ramps. Well, I've been watching Dave's videos a while and he's got me convinced I need to change more regularly. So dad's going to bring the ramos over and I'm going to have a go at a full oil and oil filter change. I have a service manual already, but need a tool to remove the filter I'll have the mechanic on stand by in case I bugger it up. Wish me luck!

Dave, you’re right about the old engines and the tune ups and lack of longevity, BUT modern engines are overly complicated, not “just” to meet emissions and to be efficient, but the layouts are annoyingly complicated. Been working lately on a Mercedes diesel; lost of plastic and lots of complicated solutions.

My company has a fleet of about 20 of these vans for our service techs. We have yet to have any motor issues, most last to about 250,000 miles before we sell them off. The only issues we’ve had with these vans is the front ends need to be rebuilt around every 90k miles. Too bad they don’t make them anymore.

A few years ago I trucked in and thru Utah a lot. I’m in Western Colorado (Silt). Truck parking near SLC is hard to find. When I delivered Lowe’s from the Denver distribution center,to the SLC area, I discovered a Lowe’s in your neighborhood. Dave I love your flashlight! I have the same one on me at all times. Very handy in the shop, under a car or under the hood! The magnetic base has assisted me so much with transmission changes under vehicles

That’s right señor Dave!!! You are absolutely right!!! I got 300 k out of my 1988 Chevy c1500 with a 3.4 v 6 engine with 5 speed manual transmission and I was doing oil changes with filters oil and air on a regular basis like every 3 k miles or near the 3k mile mark and I had a stroke and that was the end of the truck completely nobody else could drive it cause it was 5speed manual.. and I was severely injured and disabled so I had to put it on sale and it was a sad day for me when it was towed away 😢…that truck took me to work every single day sometimes seven days a week when I had two houses remodeling kitchen and bathrooms use to drive all over DFW and I think I drove an average of 90 miles a day just carrying my tools and materials like Sheetrock or boxes of tile but if I didn’t got ill I’m sure I was still driving that truck so I have been making my sons the good habit of doing maintenance oil changes on time replace air filters check everything and listen to your vehicle and fix the problem right away…and with honest mechanics like you there’s no drama everything will work just fine..Saudi’s!!! Love to watch your videos and God bless you for taking care of your workers and share your blessings with them is a great gesture of respect and appreciation I wish I was working for you…best boss in the business 👋😃👋Saludos!!!😊

The phone calls are real people !!! I was that person to call the customer . Sum understood an and sum were nightmares lol . There needs to be a KZbin channle for only customer phone calls on there machine or cars that would be an interesting fun channle 😂

as a dealership mechanic, having mastertech ASE certs, working for nissan, ford, and benz, I can honestly say most terrible money losing ROs that i had , and most common engine problems, were from lack of basic interval services

I love the videos Dave, but I will take a 300 ci Ford straight 6 over any small block built today. The main difference in engine longevity is the better quality oil that is more accessible today. It's like the man who kissed a cow, everyone to his own taste. Keep up the good work, God bless.
