Thanks Clay. I recently bought a Subaru XV (a Crosstrek here in Australia) because our roads are rubbish and wanted a car with good ground clearance and traction. The Subaru ticks both boxes and many more that make driving them reliable and safe.

Hey GT2026, Our family is looking at the Crosstrek and it keeps coming to the top of the list in the class. I know that the car is a great one, but do you have any inside tips on what you don't like with it? Are there any cons right now for you? Thanks!
@garrytaylor6 жыл бұрын
Hello Dr Leong Even though it is mostly only my wife and I who are passengers in our car now because our two children are adults and mostly find their own mode of transport, I clearly remember the aspects of a car that made our family comfortable and the driver (me) happy. Seeing that you asked about the cons, I'll start by addressing them first. The first con is luggage space. This is not storage for things like drink bottles, phones, iPads, tablets or books as the Subaru has space for those. This is about the space behind the back seat. For day to day family use, the space is adequate for family items such as a stroller, backpacks, sporting equipment, small bags or grocery shopping. For a family trip involving larger bags and possibly some camping or other large items, you'd need to scrutinise what is being packed and choose items diligently. There's always the option to purchase a cargo storage container that attaches to the roof rails. The second con is torque. The Subaru's acceleration is more than adequate for driving around city/suburban streets but I recently took the car on a trip that included steep mountain highways. The car had to work to match the speed of accompanying traffic when on fairly substantial inclines. Engine power appeared to not be efficiently transferred to the wheels. Engine revs consequently increased and interior noise was noticeably greater but it still didn't interfere with conversations or listening to music. The only other compact SUV that I investigated that exceeded the Subaru in the areas of luggage space and power/torque and came close in other aspects was the Mazda CX-5. They are the only Subaru XV/Crosstrek cons that I believe would impact on a family's and driver's enjoyment of being in and using the car. The positives far exceed the issues. For a family, the generous interior space, safety features, storage, air conditioning, visibility, audio system, comfortable seats, electronic/digital device support and leg room makes the Subaru an excellent choice. For a driver with a family in the car, the Subaru's excellent Eyesight system supports responsible driving practices, the adaptive cruise control adds security and safety, the visibility is excellent, the steering/acceleration/suspension make driving a pleasure, sat nav is easy to use, voice recognition and cabin lay out make controls easy to access, high ground clearance and X Mode adds confidence for off road experiences and, finally, the car looks great. I hope this helps.

Wow, Clay has a lot of patience responding to this Norm dude. Norm T, it's okay to be skeptical as long as you have fact to base on and done so in a polite tone. While the Subaru isn't the most fun or luxury car to drive, it is probably the strongest contender within the all wheel drive non luxury segment in this price tier. I owned both Audi and Acura before, both offered excellent AWD but their maintenance cost are much higher as well. I currently own a Crosstrek and I never have to shovel my car out in snow as deep as 12-15" of snow. As for domestic car, while they did improved over the years so did the other brands. It's not like they have a long way to go but the game of catching up are still on.

Nov 30th, we got our brand new sunshine orange colour Subaru 2018 Crosstreck limited edition with technology. This is an amazing car! Hi quality, sexy body shape, wonderful performance, fantastic drive feeling, ... ... too much more to be mentioned! 152 HP is really good enough for daily drive. Some comments said that it is slow to accelerate, but I think that saying is not true. From my testing, it has a very satisfied start-up speed. The 8" GPS has a big improvement compare to my daughter's 2016 model. Thank you Clay and the other comments! Wish you all a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Thank you Clay! Any comments on the new Subaru Ascent? I have Kia Sorento w/ 3 row capacity. Subaru Ascent looks better than mine except they only provide one turbo engine option, HP is about 266, less than my current one which is 276 HP.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Hey Victor! Yeah the new Ascent should definitely help open up Subaru to a brand new-market! And yes only the one engine option, the 2.4L Turbo. This engine is likely the engine that will make it's way into the WRX STi when that vehicle get's the full refresh. So using it in the Ascent (a de-tuned version) will give Subaru a good chance to test it out before cranking up the power and dropping into the new WRX STi. And while you are correct your Sorento may have 10 more hp, the Ascent will have about 25 more ft-lbs of torque, which is, in my opinion far more important to a vehicle of this size. and although the official numbers have not been released yet, I suspect the Ascent will get better fuel economy as well.

Subaru system is inherently better, center diff is always on. And able to identify which wheel to send torque and which wheel to reduce torque and the right amount. Although this situation is probably eqavalent of very icy winter conditions. If you like best traction in winter, Subaru system is superior to heldex system in other cars.

I did test several small CUVs. Finally I found that Crosstrek is the best one. I bought one for my daughter and she loves it so much. My wife will have her Crosstrek 2018 soon. Thank you for your video, learned a lots from your comments! Why doesn't Subaru make Crosstrek's engine a little more powerful? 152 HP is a little weak for mountain roads.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Hello Victor and thank you for the comment! I am glad you and your family love the Crosstrek! We all agree that the Crosstrek could use a bit more power, especially for those mountain roads as you said. However, due to the Crosstrek sharing much of the same DNA as the Impreza (Subaru's economy car), the engine was designed with fuel economy as priority number 1. As such there is a bit of a power sacrifice. We are all hopeful that one day in the future that Subaru will make a more performance orientated version of the Crosstrek (although it will get worse fuel economy, the power bump would be nice!) However in the CUV segment, performance is usually not a very high priority. For a little bit more money than a fully loaded Crosstrek, there is the option of a Turbo Forester. The Forester XT makes 250hp, so plenty of power, and practicality. Thanks for watching!
@victorsun90287 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your time and comment! I prefer Outback 3.6R model better if I change my current one. I have no much confidence on the turbo engines. Are they as reliable as the normal engines? Say turbo 2.0XT vs 3.6R? I am not comparing their HP, just the reliability, any comments? Thank you!
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
As far as Subaru Turbo's go, they are very reliable. Subaru has been making Turbo vehicles for a long time. It's also worth pointing out that unlike other manufacturers, when Subaru puts a Turbo on a vehicle, its for performance purposes. Other manufacturers are using turbo's in combination with smaller displacement engines to improve fuel economy. The Turbo forester is also tuned very conservatively, so conservative in fact, that you can run regular fuel in them and it is perfectly fine for the vehicle and your warranty (in Canada at least) Because they are not aggressively tuned, reliability will be excellent . To answer your question about reliability of the 3.6R vs the 2.0XT it is hard to make a long term comparison, as the 3.6R has been out for a long time. It truly is a benchmark for reliable engines. We have seen them with well over 400,000km on them and still going strong. Only time will tell if the 2.0XT will be as good. it has only been out since 2015, so long-term remains to be seen. So far though, they have been excellent. The main advantage of the Turbo (assuming it is as reliable as the 3.6R,) is that you do get 3mpg better on the average for fuel consumption as compared to the 3.6R. Thanks again for the comment! Cheers!

Yes it is best for heavy snow and off roading in this price range. If these 2 aspects are you biggest concerns. But mostly due to its transmission it maybe far from reliable or engaging to drive. Styling and interior design are also more personal preferences.....

It also has better safety, reliability, fuel economy, interior space and horsepower! The CVT transmission is quite good in the Subaru vehicles. (a fact my good friend domster refuses to acknowledge) but that whole argument can be read in the comments below! I don't think anyone buying a Honda or Mazda thinks that they are getting a more off road capable vehicle than someone buying a Subaru. I am personally a big Subaru fan, but Honda's are super reliable as well. I have no personal or 2nd hand experience with Mazda.
@jobob43216 жыл бұрын
Honda does indeed make a good vehicle there is no doubt. And this video only demonstrates one part of the vehicle. While offload capability is improved with a full time AWD like the Subaru, it also has more day-to day applications as well. Part time AWDs are essentially only FWD at highway speed, where as a full time AWD (found in Audi, BMW and Subaru) are AWD even at highway speed. This inherently makes them safer, especially when road conditions are poor. Take into account the the Crosstrek gets better overall fuel economy, than the part-time AWD Honda, and i'll take a system that's always active every time.
@BigSam636 жыл бұрын
Clay Grenier agree on all points sir. I have an 18 crosstrek, my mother has a 17 CRV. My personal opinion is that the crosstrek is a superior vehicle in every respect except for horsepower. Clay Grenier, nice test! I have a 2016 Crosstrek Sport and my parents have a 2017 Forester Premium. All I can say is that a Crosstrek with Blizzak in the snow makes a great combo! I did a video where I accelerated from 0 to 90kmh while having 2 wheels in 6 inches of snow and the 2 left wheels on a coutry road 2 days ago ( light snow and slippery) and the car never budged, no torque steer (of course!). Only thing missing in the Crosstrek is more power. Everytime I drive the Forester it has such more "prime" when accelerating even though it weights about 250lbs more! Oh and it's possible to drift the Crosstrek even with the CVT and all the computers trying to NOT allow it! :D

CVT in action. Since this transmission technology is being used AWD performance goes downhill when low gear high torque situations are manifested.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
On older CVT designs driven by belts perhaps. Most modern CVT's (Subaru included) use high-torque chains. The AWD performance is not effected negatively by the CVT. Towing capacity is effected however. If you are in need of low gear and high torque, simply press the X-mode button.
@panayiotispalmiris17507 жыл бұрын
do you have a torque graph. Can CVT support greater than >250Nm?? I need a torque curve comparison of CVT and 7 speed S-tronic 500Nm (if you could consider this as best in class) in order to understand the improvements in CVT which has no low gear/high rev. What does high torque chain has to do with low gear? X-mode is just a manual center differential which locks front rear torque distribution I believe, but still CVT would not perform in low gear high torque situations due to design deficiencies.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Yes CVT can support more than 250Nm. The WRX has a CVT transmission option now. The WRX makes 258 ft-lbs of torque or 349.8Nm. X mode is not just a manual center diff lock. Xmode, when engaged controls engine output, transmission, AWD torque split and the braking system. While i agree the CVT will not be able to support torque figures such as the ones supported by the 7 speed S-tronic, CVT system that can support 350Nm of torque is more than enough to get you out of those "stuck" situations.
@panayiotispalmiris17507 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. If you dont ask you dont learn :) . 350Nm I agree is enough for light to moderate off road.

I can't think of a single time I've needed 4WD in town in the past 5 years (sunny country). The only thing I have wanted is a little more ground clearance so I can drive over the little side curb so I can get down a turn lane to the green arrow because some moron doesn't want to move up to let me get down (some of our kerbs are quite high even through they are sloped so the middle of car will scrape). All three of these vehicles have quite small boots which is why they have never appealed to me. I'd just take the Mazda 3 and save my money. If I lived in a cold country it's a no brainer, subbie every day.

Would still rather daily and live with a CX-3. for the .5% of the time you run into this problem its not enough to live with the bland dull Subaru interiors and driving dynamics in everyday life.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
MrBurgandy, if you do not live in a place that has snow and ice 8 months of the year as we do here in Canada, then you are right, you may not need a Full time AWD. As for the bland interiors, have you seen the new interiors of the 2017 Impreza and 2018 Crosstrek? The 17 Impreza was named to Wards auto Top 10 interiors of the year for 2017. The crosstrek and impreza have identical interiors. Bland driving dynamics? That's a fun opinion, albeit an unmerited one. Subaru make some of the most engaging and rewarding cars to drive (in my opinion.) Having a lower center of mass than most vehicles, coupled with a Boxer engine and full time AWD, the driving dynamics of these cars can be quite enjoyable. I don;t know too many Subaru Owners who would say their car handles poorly.
@MrBurgandy257 жыл бұрын
I've driven the crosstrek back to back with the CX3 when I was once in the market for such a vehicle (no longer am). First yes, the new Subaru interior is better than the model year I drove. But bland driving dynamics, yeah thats true. MT 2018 test did say it's better this time around due to the quicker-ratio steering rack, Car and Driver said even with the new steering rack, it "offers little feedback." They also said the CVT wines, and accentuates "What little power the engine makes" calling the engine "sleepy." "Subaru has no problem selling the crosstrek with a sluggish powertrain." On the other hand C&D states the Mazda CX-3s' "eager engine, and playfull chassis...the CX3 is the compact crossover of choice for driving enthusiast. I would call it a fully merited opinion, felt by those who make a carrier out of vehicle reviews; my drive of the two, reaffirmed what I've read. The boxer is a great engine, no argument there, but you kill it's capability when you mate it to a CVT, well any engine connected to a CVT is a recipe for driving disaster. I live in MI, grew up in Northern MI with lake affect snow. Grew up driving a 98 Stratus FWD, no ABS, Trac, stability control. Never got stuck driving on well worn out all season tires. Since then and 2+3 cars later, still haven't been stuck in a commute. The XV is a great car if you want a small subcompact crossover to lift, throw some knobbies, a light bar, and long travel suspension. Or for those who think they "need" AWD (who mainly Subaru dealers sell to) will buy them with little cross shopping. Much like my BIL&SIL did and are now sitting on a '16 Outback burning oil because of their faulty piston rings (known and documented issue) but Subaru will not repair because oil consumption is not above the rate deemed necessary to warrant a repair/replacement. But maybe 1 year down the road, or even 10; who knows, the cat will clog and cost them even more to replace. Thats after the O2 sensors fail (again) because of deposits. Give it a more reliable engine (unless the piston rings issue has been fixed) or a traditional 6 speed auto on higher trim levels, true better driving dynamics and we could just as well look at one again if they give it a more powerfull engine, say the JDM Forester XT 2.0L turbo making 276 HP, call it the Crosstrek tS and they would have a winner on their hands. Give it the tS/STI treatment Nissan gave the Juke with the Nismo RS, but actually give it a better engine and transmission, and not just 15 more Hp. Until that time...
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Mrburgandy, you make many very good an valid points. And on most, i agree. The crosstrek isn't for everyone. not everyone needs a full time AWD. And the weather conditions here in Alberta Canada are different even from those in MI. If you drove those vehicles and never got stuck then that is fantastic, it could very well be attributed to your driving skill as opposed to having the right tool for the job. There is no doubt, that you would have had an easier time with winter tires, OR a full time AWD, or both. There are many people who live here who are not super confident drivers in the ice and snow. Full time AWD on the Subaru's can help give them that extra bit of control. I am also not going to argue that the Crosstrek is under powered. Especially for those of us who use our cars for more than just going back and forth to work or the grocery store. But for those who do, the power is more than sufficient. And the little bit of extra Jam in the CX-3 is hardly enough to write home about, or something that the average consumer would really notice. I would also argue that for most driving enthusiasts.. the CUV category would not be a first choice. For most people looking for a CUV, things such as fuel economy, safety. interior space and practicality would be more important. And in those categories, the Subaru would best the Mazda. In the interest of credited opinions, on the consumer reports page if you compare the 2017 (yes the old platform crosstrek) to the 2017 CX-3.. The Subaru was ranked 1st overall with a score of 76. The Cx-3 was 3rd with an overall score of 64. If you also check out the Winter driving tests, the Subaru ranks 1st and the Mazda, among the worst. Again I agree that the CVT transmission would never be my transmission of choice. It's purpose however, is to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. Something that is much more important in this Class than Power figures. And the modern CVT in the new vehicles is actually quite good. If power and performance are a main concern, buy a WRX, or an STi... hell even the Forester XT has 250hp... As for the boxer and the oil consumption demon. Again i agree, but there is a difference between burning engine oil and losing it through blow-by. Lighter and lighter oils are constantly being used by manufacturers in an effort to reduce internal resistances and improve fuel economy. The lighter oil, when used in an engine that was not designed to be used with an oil that light, will seep oil past the piston rings. If your BIL and SIL are having issues, simply put a a slightly heavier oil in. I am curious though in a 16 outback.. do you know what their consumption rate is in like L/1000km? or L/2000km? And as much as we all would love an STI crosstrek, it is unlikely to happen. Simply due to the fact that these are economy vehicles, not performance ones. If you want a performance vehicle, again we have those, and even the 250hp Forester XT is quite quick.

Jorge Nitales I think the main cause of AWD systems being so under-performing in small cars is fuel economy. Making a strong AWD system that is always active and can send all the torque to 1 wheels will inevitably make the car less efficient. Probably price too.

Great test! Did you try with the TC OFF? I got out of situations much quicker with it being OFF. As for the Mazda fanboys, I managed a 6.2L/100km @116km/h the other month. I was averaging worst in my Elantra GT due to the fact that the engine was running at higher RPM. I don't care if the car is not fast to 100km/h, it has quite a lot of torque while climbing hills on regional highways! It rarely goes to 4K RPM :)
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Hey Groovy, unfortunately no we did not conduct a test with the TC off. While TC off is also a viable way to free yourself if you are stuck, we wanted to show the difference in systems in that some will allow for wheel slip before cutting throttle, and some will not. Cheers!

Hey Clay, thanks for the quick reply. I thought the X-Mode was just for extreme conditions. Also, Stock tires suck tremendously! Maybe redo the test in winter with the same vehicules but with Blizzak WS-80! :)
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
I agree, stock tires do not have much business on roads that are covered in snow and ice! And with the rollers, it simulates a 0 traction situation so the test would have a fairly similar result in the winter time. The only real difference would be that the one tire that could get traction, would have less of it!
@Brian-dd2df7 жыл бұрын
Question. I thought X-mode was specifically for hill descents. So wouldn't going uphill or over anything be a moot point? Not hating, just curious. I own a crosstrek.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian excellent question! So X-mode, (in addition to providing hill decent control) also makes the vehicle much more "off road" or extreme weather capable. It works similarly to a 4X4 low gear in a truck. It smooths out the throttle response and allows the system to adjust power to each wheel based on changes in wheel torque, rather than wheel slip. The result is a quicker adjustment by the system to send more power to the tires that have traction, because as wheel slip occurs, not only is traction lost (obviously) but it can also upset any progress made if your trying to get yourself unstuck or climbing a hill. The smoother the better! Please note that this system only operates at speeds of 40km/h and less, so the minute you exceed that speed the system will automatically disable itself. Cheers!
@Xenophene017 жыл бұрын
Clay Grenier so I am a bit curious as well. If you are stuck and you accelerate too fast then that means it shuts off?
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Only if you reach a speed greater than 40km/h will it shut off. Because X-mode smooths out the power delivery and limits wheel slip, you will be un-stuck well before it shuts off. X-mode is designed to be used with TC on, so your wheel speed will not reach over 40km/h under wheel slip conditions.

It is a very similar test to the test# 1 in this video. Do you know if TC was on or off for the video you sent the link to? We (and i'm assuming most people) didn't / dont know about that 2nd gear trick in the Mazda. Most people buying these vehicles likely would leave it in drive if they were stuck. Also if you noticed the application of throttle using the 2nd gear trick was very abrupt, not nearly as steady as in the other attempts. This adds another variable into the equation. Did the Mazda succeed because it was in 2nd gear? or was it the very abrupt throttle application that moved it forward off the rollers? Furthermore, even with the 2nd gear trick and abrupt throttle application, I am not convinced that the Mazda would succeed in the 2nd test we performed where the only wheel with traction also had to climb up a bump. Next time we do a test we will be sure to find out!
@canraps7 жыл бұрын
I've learned from the poster of that youtube video, he said TCS was on all the time during all the tests and he claimed if TCS wasnt on, Cx-3 would not be able to pass even 2 wheels on roller test. As a summary, I wont expect Cx-3 to be as good as Subaru/Suzuki 4x4 systems but your tests tell me Cx-3 is on par with those when we think about City and some snow conditions. But when it comes to total offroad capabilities of course Cx-3 is not suited for that!

Clay Grenier does the suburu have some sorta electronic clutch in the front and rear diffs or is it just done using the abs system?
@jobob43216 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, In the automatic Subaru's the multi plate center clutch pack is always partially engaged to give it the 60-40 front to rear split, with the ability to go 50-50 as needed. Modern Subaru's also include a transfer control module on that center clutch pack that can cause the torque to shift 50-50 (or in between 60-40 and 50-50) predicatively based on steering angle, acceleration, etc. Both the front and rear diffs are open, meaning they use the ABS to transfer torque laterally. Cheers!

@4x4.tests.on.rollers6 жыл бұрын
Again misleading information about 60/40 torque split. Let's look for example at 2017 Forester. During stable driving (60, 70, 80, 90 km/h) activity of solenoid is set to 27% (just for the record - 100% means 50/50). What torque split that is? Probably close to 90/10. Full throttle from 60 km/h gives maximum 57% to the solenoid (99% from 0 km/h speed). That makes the system the same as i.e. Mitsubishi or the ones based on newest haldexes.
@jobob43216 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true. When I tested it in the impreza with the Subaru diagnostic tool, the torque never reached below 39% to the rear on the Impreza based on the solenoid C position. (as explained in an earlier comment). Now the Impreza is a different AWD system than the 2017 or 18 Forester, however the 19 forester will be on the same system as well.

The honda did not do well because it cannot send enough torque to the rear wheels. The system is a "catch" system to try to add stability as opposed to a system that can actually propel the vehicle. If TC was off it would have made absolutely no difference in the Honda. TC off would help to maintain momentum so that throttle cut due to slip would not cause the vehicle to lose it's momentum through say a snow bank or muddy road, however because this test started at a stand-still TC off is irrelevant.

@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Mrshadowy... While you are correct the Mazda is a "part-time" AWD system and the Subaru is a "full-time" The Subaru system with the CVT transmission is actually a 60-40 front to rear split under most conditions. The Subaru also actually has BETTER fuel economy than the Mazda. It's a common misconception that just because all 4 tires always get power that the fuel economy is worse. The the reason the Subaru gets better mileage is the fact that the transmission in the Subaru is actually mounted directly behind the BOXER engine. This allows for a completely linear transfer of power between the engine and drive line. The Mazda has an "inline" engine and the transmission is mounted beside the engine. As a result, more couplings are needed in order to "redirect" that power to the drive line, and each additional component robs efficiency, and fuel economy suffers as a result. So maybe im just a crazy person... but if i can have an AWD system that is always working, and have BETTER fuel economy, to me at least.. the choice is an easy one.

You didn't hear the Mazda rev as much because as soon as additional wheel slip was detected (as it started to make the climb) the vehicle would cut throttle on it's own in order to attempt to regain traction. The Subaru however, is programmed to realize that some slip at low speed is ok, and therefore doesn't cut throttle, allowing the engine to rev and make the climb.

@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Felipe Bay, to some degree you may be correct. However what Mazda did in their video was specifically design the test so that the Subaru would fail. How they did so is as follows: -Because Subaru is a full-time AWD, when the wheels are cranked all the way to one direction, the system allows additional slippage to prevent the shaking and bucking that would be generated from the inside tires having to travel a shorter distance than the outer. Have you ever tired to turn a tight corner in a 4x4 truck in 4x4 mode? it hops and skips. The Subaru system remedies this by allowing additional slip and therefore could not generate the torque. However that is only the case when the wheels are cranked to one direction. Since this test was conducted Subaru has fixed this quirk. -Because the Mazda is a part-time system it uses predictive measures to anticipate slip, and then send power to the rears based on those pre-set "predictions" as set by the computer of the car. One of those predictions involves having the wheels cranked to one direction. (the Mazda system determines wheel crank to be a situation where you would want AWD) Therefore due to this very specific condition, the Mazda was able to succeed where the Subaru did not. -The Mazda video also has no mention as to whether or not the TC or VDC was on or off in both vehicles. - In my opinion, if I was driving in bad road conditions where the only one tire could get traction, I would not crank my wheels to one direction or the other. Based on the road, maybe i physically couldn't as I would be steering into oncoming traffic or into an obstacle etc. It is far more likely a situation to be as it is in the video above. One tire getting traction, no playing with vehicle settings or cranking wheels etc. Just a straight-forward drive. no trickery. -The Mazda rep even acknowledged that if he did add more throttle, the Subaru would have made the climb. Further proving just how specific the conditions had to be in order for the Mazda to win out. So i suppose if you want to do very tight, very slow corners in the snow... then the Mazda is the better choice. (before Subaru fixed the design) -In short, all Mazda did in that video was exploit a VERY SPECIFIC situational design flaw in how the Subaru AWD handles tight, slow cornering maneuvers. A design flaw which has since been fixed.

Clay Grenier What crosstrek year model was this addressed? Is it only computer awd tweak or mechanically addressed?
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Hey MindM, The Crosstrek year that had the first computer tweak was in the 2017. It is important to note though that the Mazda test only revved the engine lightly, the Mazda rep even admitted that had he applied more throttle, the Crosstrek would have made the climb. So If you do have a Crosstrek prior to that tweak, it is still every bit as capable! Cheers!
@mindmmindh3917 жыл бұрын
Is that something a Subaru certified car shop can reprogram?
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
I do not believe so unfortunately. Again the tweak was so minor that you honestly would hardly notice unless you were looking for it. All the reprogram did was make the LSD tighten up quicker (lower rpm) than before with the wheels cranked at low speed. If you are not cranking your wheels to one direction, you would not notice a difference between the original design and the tweaked one. And even with the wheels cranked, on the older system, just give it about 3,000rpm and it will climb. Mazda really had to try hard to find a very specific scenario in order to try to make the Subaru look worse.

Thanks for sharing that! Without being able to understand if TC was on, or if Xmode was on. My best guess as to why the Crosstrek failed, is that they did not push the throttle long enough for the Subaru to send the power to the one tire that had Traction. They seemed to push the gas for a moment, and then back off pretty quickly. This would not allow enough time for the Differentials to tighten up in order to transfer additional torque to the one tire. The transfer takes longer with X-mode off than with X-mode on. Even in the video above it took a moment for the Subaru to transfer enough torque to move forward or make the climb. Again though, without being able to speak the language, that's just an observation...
@jobob43216 жыл бұрын
If you look at rollers they used as well, it's only a 2 roller design, meaning the center of the wheel sits pretty deep in between the rollers. It would actually make this test tougher than the one we did i think, as not only does the vehicle have to roll forward, it needs to climb out of that dip created by the gap in between each roller
@4x4.tests.on.rollers6 жыл бұрын
+Clay Grenier I understand that language a little, they switched of TC at 3.48 when car was already spinning wheels for quite a long time. After that they back off pretty quickly with TC off. There is no word about x-mode. My rollers are very similar to theirs, I would like to do such test with 2018 XV, but I do not have any access to that car - maybe you have any relationships with Polish Subaru dealers?
@ZCT8087 жыл бұрын
The problem with these 'test' videos is that just about any manufacturer could produce a series of tests that their own car would ace and would cause issues for others. Very hard to find genuine comparison tests with no agenda or inherent bias. While I do accept that Subaru make a great AWD system, this car does 0-60 in TEN SECONDS. This is inexcusable. I'm not expecting a race car, but seriously, competitive cars leave this in the dust. No excuse for a modern car of this kind to be able to do 0-60 in under 8 seconds. I'm far more likely to want to merge into traffic than drive up a hill with rollers on three of my wheels.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Neither the Mazda or the Honda does 0-60 in under 8 seconds. And while yes the Subie has the slowest 0-60, when your merging into traffic your usually not starting from 0. The subie has the highest hp out of the 3, however all 3 are within 11hp of each other. It's very unlikely you'll feel a difference from the seat between the 3 when merging into traffic. It's also worth noting that this video (although during summer) was made in Canada and for the Canadian consumer. Here, having only 1 wheel able to get traction in the winter is a very likely occurrence. Obviously this test will have less relevance to consumers in places like California (although the subie turns the best fuel economy too). And finally as for a biased test... In my opinion, this test was FAR less biased then the one conducted by Mazda in which they had the wheels cranked to the left on both vehicles and limited throttle. (they also failed to mention whether or not TC was active or not for all vehicles). Again though that's just my opinion.

Hello DAM8658, we compared the Crosstrek to the CX-3 and HRV because those 3 vehicles are in the same category. The Cx-5 would compete in the same category as the Subaru Forester and the Honda CR-V. That all being said, the AWD systems are the same for Cx3 and Cx5, same for the CRV and HRV and the same for the Forester and the Crosstrek. So the results would have been the same. Cheers!

Just curious your vehicles on those rollers with no resistance are supposte to simulate a road? Put the cars on a dyno or real time ice omg theirs a thought. But building a couple of bread rollers wont do it wont do it for what awd is.
@jobob43216 жыл бұрын
They simulate 0 traction at the wheel. Dyno's measure horsepower and torque at the wheels. This test measures the vehicles ability to move forward if only one rear tire has traction. And here's a fun fact about dynos... if the vehicle moves forward, you have a big problem. So how is the vehicle supposed to propel itself forward if it's not going to move on a dyno? hmm....

Nah, he was stepping on the gas pedal more AGGRESSIVELY when he was in the Subaru. Especially the last climb.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Both vehicles had throttle steadily applied until full throttle or success. The Mazda system cuts throttle in combination with abs when additional slip is detected, so it may appear as if the Mazda is getting less throttle. It is not the driver not giving it gas, it is the vehicle electronics cutting throttle. The Subaru allows for slip, does not cut throttle and will make it seem like it is getting more gas. To put it simply, the Subaru electronics, in regards to throttle management are less intrusive than in the Mazda.
@TheDaisypowerline7 жыл бұрын
In that case, if the Mazda does not cut the throttle the result will be better than Subaru?
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
It would be hard to say. Because the mazda is a part-time system, extra reactionary or in Mazda's case "predictive" measures are use to predict and react to slippage. If the Mazda system did not cut throttle when additional slip occurred, then it likely would have succeeded in the test. However due to the fact that the current system is part time, it will always have some form of reaction to additional slip, as the system thinks you are further losing control and abs is then applied. I suppose an additional programming measure could be added to the mazda to make it so it did not cut throttle at low speed if more slip happened. But i am unsure as to how that would effect the system as a whole. Part time systems are inherently more complicated. The bottom line is that in adverse road conditions, a Full time AWD will fair better than a part time system, as there is less reaction, it's just always on and always there. Awesome question though!
@lettre57 жыл бұрын
would turning off TCS change the outcome for the cx3
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
lettre5, I am by no means a Mazda expert, but for test number 1, it would make no difference as the CX3 simply could not transfer enough torque to the passenger rear wheel to propel the vehicle forward. As for test 2 it possibly could make the difference so long as you can turn off TC and VDC. At that point theoretically it should not cut its own progress, and therefore be able to make the climb. That being said the AWD system on the Mazda also uses wheel speed sensors to predict and react to slip. So even with TC and VDC off the results could be the same. Excellent question!

@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Try turning your volume up. You can hear the engine revving up. And even if it was barely above idle, the Subie seems to have no issue making the climb with minimal throttle (watch the reverse angle for test 1)
@441meatloaf7 жыл бұрын
You need need to hear the volume. You can just look by how fast the wheels are spinning. The mazda wheels weren't even spinning as fast as the subaru. While I own a crosstrek, its not hard to fake a video test especially these on rollers. Real test of AWD isn't on rollers, but on ice, snow and dirt.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
You do need to hear the volume. Because the mazda is sensing slip on the wheels it's applying brakes to help regain traction. The system does not allow for much slip (it reacts incredibly fast, just as mazda claims it does.) So even though the engine is revved up, the wheels are not spinning as fast as the Subaru because unlike the Subaru, the Mazda system does not allow for some slip to occur. The subaru system does, which is why the wheels on the subaru are allowed to spin. And Aoru, you are right, the best test for AWD is on snow and ice. Consumer Reports did a test between many AWD SUV's on the market in Snow and ice conditions (see link below) www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/09/survey-rates-suv-and-wagon-performance-in-snow/index.htm Spoiler alert: it's an All-Subaru Podium.

Norm, the AWD in the Acura RDX will be very similar to that of the Honda. As you can see in the video above, the Honda didn't do very well in our test either. Not all AWD systems made by Japan are the same. And only Subaru, BMW and Audi will offer you a full-time AWD. The Subaru, and likely even the Mazda would have had no problems in that test you provided a link to. I'd also like to point out as well that the Buick Envision is manufactured in China... sooo theres that....

@jobob43216 жыл бұрын
@Dashcam captures, if you look at that test performed by Mazda, do you notice how they have the wheels cranked to one side before attempting the climb? There is a reason for that. Because the Subaru is a full time AWD (like a vehicle always in 4x4), in order to turn tight, slow corners, the Subaru has to allow additional slip at the inside wheels, so that you do not get that bucking and skipping sensation as you would with a 4x4 truck. Mazda's test here is set up to specifically exploit that in a very specific situation. Because the Mazda is a part-time awd it uses predictive measures to pre-engage the AWD system. One of those factors happens to be the wheels cranked to one side. If you listen to the guy doing the talking, he even admits that the Subaru would make the climb with more throttle. This test is so specifically set up to make Mazda appear better, that its almost completely irrelevant. If i'm stuck or in some nasty stuff, typically i don't turn my wheels all the way to one side. So yes in this very specific situation (wheels cranked, low speed tight corner, and only at very low rpm, does the Mazda move up a little quicker.

@@checkmateking2854 The CVT transmission is a matter of personal opinion. The CVT on the Subaru's is not the same as the ones found on other manufactures such as Nissan. The CVT on the Subaru is actually a decent transmission aside from maybe performance driving. That being said the Crosstrek, CX-3 and HRV are in no way performance vehicles. Again, the CVT may not be for everyone, but just jumping on the "CV'T's are bad" bandwagon without first trying out a modern one would be a mistake. Most people who don't like CVT's don't actually understand how they work.

At lease the Mazda won't blow head gaskets and burn oil.
@jobob43217 жыл бұрын
Brian, well i understand your some-what outdated opinion, the fact of the matter is those old issues have been solved. Years ago. Furthermore, those older engines that did use oil were not actually burning it. Consuming oil and burning oil are not the same thing. Back in the early to mid-2000s when fuel economy became a very important factor for consumers, some manufactures (Subaru included), chose to try to reduce internal resistances rather than re-design the engine. As a result, lighter oil was used, lighter than the engine was initially designed for. The result was a loss of oil through blow-by, not burning. In 2015 the complete engine re-design occurred and the oil consumption issue solved. If you have an older model on the previous generation of engine design, simply use a heavier oil and consumption will be reduced. However all the vehicles in the video are modern. So the oil consumption and head gasket issues of the past are irrelevant.
