TMF - this has been one of the BEST bike reviews I have come across. Just stumbled across a 2019 Speedmaster at a local dealer yesterday which has been kitted out a bit with floorboards, windscreen, upgraded seat, upgraded pillion back rest, Mini ape bars and maybe one or two other bits and bobs. The bike looked sweet and felt fantastic to sit on. Got me interested in digging up a bit of info on Speed Master and so found your review. Excellent review and very helpful. Unfortunately I am not in the position to upgrade my current bike for at least 6 to 8 months, otherwise I would be back at the dealer tomorrow to take the bike for a test ride and go from there.......

I picked my Speedy up on Tuesday and love it, only done 60 km on it so far but looking forward to going for a spin this weekend. it's as light as a feather compared to the Storm I had. been looking forward to this review and you have nailed it as usual. I put the panniers on and yes, they look crap but are handy. new leather quilted seat and sissy bar will be added. fortunately the panniers are easily removed because they will rub the calves of any pillion you have, so be warned. I have the black Vance and Hines pipes too which look and sound very nice.

Hi TMF - yes, as others have noted, a very well balanced review. I’ve had mine since the summer and had the sissy bar, engine protectors, V&H pipes, heated grips and lots of other goodies fitted. I haven’t yet decided on bags, like you I don’t like the Harley-type leather arrangements, so I’ve been using a ruck sack and that doesn’t work for overnighters. The lack of a centre stand is a problem. I bought bobbins and a paddock stand and it just doesn’t do it, so chain maintenance is a problem. Front suspension travel is a little limited but generally not an issue. Early grounding of the foot pegs enforces a slight change in riding style but again not an issue. However, like you have observed - what a fun bike - it is a great bike and one I’m proud to own. I’ve been away for the past week and really missing it - what more is there to say!! Thanks again and hope to meet up on Sunday? Yours aye, Alan

LOL, laughed when you said about your foot touching the ground. I test rode a Triumph Thunderbird a few years ago, barrelling into a corner, heel touched the deck and ripped my foot clean of the peg, nearly went straight off the road. Id like to say my skill kept me on the tarmac and got me round the bend but it probably had more to do with the £3000 deposit i had to put down on the bike for the test ride.

I was a bit surprised to see only 113 miles after a fill up! Triumph suggest you should achieve over 150 miles from a full tank. I'm hoping they're correct as I've just bought an '18 plate Speedmaster for two up touring. Good review as usual TMF, thanks.

@@hydronewbie the Triumph screen is quite effective but very expensive. I might have tried a Dart Marlin had the Triumph screen not been fitted when I bought the bike. I fitted S/H Givi panniers but the missus found they rubbed her legs, so that was a non-starter. Cheers, Pete.

Nice review, TMF. Never been a cruiser person myself, but you made it sound delightful. One pick for me: I wish triumph would get away from the seems at the bottom of their fuel tanks - round them off and make them look less "pressed steel" looking. Just a nit pick, but I think it would add an air of quality to them.

Just bought the 2022 Speedmaster; I think they saw this review as many of those issues over time that you mentioned are now resolved. The lights are now controlled by just one switch and the gauge lights are green for daytime and blue for nighttime. Simple fix. The pillion seat is about 1/2 inch thicker, and I bought the back pad and luggage rack that makes it much more comfortable for the 2nd rider, plus luggage. The brakes are awesome, so not sure if they enhanced them, but they did put on thicker forks (47mm.) The exhaust sound is just as brilliant as your riding review, no aftermarket exhaust necessary. .It now comes with the comfort seat - about as comfortable as any seat can be. Tank color is awesome as I bought the Goldline, but when cruising it gets about 160 miles on a full tank, or close to 60mpg. No complaints. If you push it, then yes, about 130 miles on a tank. I love the single instrument gauge. It has all the information I need at the press of a button. Oh, traction control is awesome too, along with 2 riding modes, rain, which brings down the torque, or road, which kicks butt. ABS can be disengaged. Wind blast can be reduced with a touring screen (I bought aftermarket flyscreen and touring screen.) Oh, scraping pegs, no problem, but I added a footboard which allows a little more lean before scraping. Thanks for your excellent in depth review. It helped me make the choice over a Harley :)

I'm picking up my Speedmaster in a week or two. Can't wait! Your comments about the centre stand are interesting ... I haven't owned many cruisers, but I've ridden a few, and they have all been guilty of this omission. It isn't available as an option for the Speedmaster, either. I think it might be a ground clearance issue, but I don't know for sure. Or perhaps an aesthetic consideration? Anyway, a couple of paddock stand bobbins on the rear frame do the trick for cleaning and oiling.

Hello, my name is James and I'm from Berlin in Germany. I know that this is not a starter bike, but I’m 54 years of age and it's my second attempt to finally ride a nice Motorcycle. So, I think I should be capable to handle this beauty when I'm finally done doing the big license. I only have a car license, but don't want to own one, because I'm from the downtown area. Anyway, after my Sportster that I never been able to ride ’cause of different reasons I finally found a way to start all over again and I think that this would be the perfect choice. Your Vlog is very informative and it convinced me to get one of those and I just wanted to say hello and thanks for showing the good and not so good things about it. There are just little things that I'm not worried about. Looking forward to see more of cool things on your channel. 👍

Nice review. I’ve had my Speedmaster for a few weeks; I’m taking it in this morning for the break-in servicing with about 750 miles on it so far. I’m a backroads, weekend cruiser, and this bike is perfect for that relaxed style of riding. If I were planning on spending a lot of time riding on the Interstate, I suppose I’d get the windscreen and/or the straight bars so I could lean forward a bit, but I can tolerate 30-60 minutes of gripping the beach bars for dear life when I get above 65 MPH. I have to give you a big thanks for your videos about ACF-50. I gave the bike a spray-down last weekend, so I should be protected until the spring. After watching your mishap with the high-pressure sprayer, I went to the gardening store and bought a little plant mister for about 10 dollars. Once pumped up, the bottle maintains pressure and (assuming the ACF-50 is somewhat warm) sprays it in a very fine mist. Much better than the little squirt bottle that comes with the 1 qt bottle.

Nice review even though I never was too fond of low rider type bikes. (I am a T120/Thruxton fan). Fuel cap is beautiful but when you have extra keys on the ring such as the one for your disc and chain lock you have to be careful they don't scratch the paint which they will do if you remove and replace the cap carelessly. Its one of the Triumph's that an aftermarket windscreen would suit.

Great review, I've done 350 miles on mine now and pretty much agree with you. I've got the heated grips and they are lovely. Personally, I don't mind the rubber bands on the bars, if you want to change them it's quite easily done. Totally agree with the single clock, Bonneville ones would be better. Lack of a centre stand is a pain, I got a paddock stand with castor wheels which makes it very manoeuvrable. You should buy one! Jay Leno did a review on this bike and he was pretty smitten as well. One thing you'll learn about cruisers if you spend any time on them on the highway is that you will build some serious muscle. You'll get a nice hard stomach fighting the upper body wind blast and some inner thighs that could crack a nut from fighting the wind that's trying to force you legs apart like an angry gynecologist. When I had them, my inner thighs would always be sore the first couple weeks of the new riding season. Floorboards make a world of difference. Pretty sure Triumph makes a set for this bike. A windscreen too.

I test rode a standard Speedmaster and a Speedmaster with the "Highway Build" option (windscreen, better saddle, panniers, etc) and the windscreen and comfort seat made a huge difference in riding enjoyment. Actually, it feels like a different bike and a more capable long distance machine (except the fuel tank capacity is the one major drawback). I'll also add that here in the U.S. we love all things British and Triumph's turn lots of heads at our bike meets. Three cheers for Triumph as they capture more U.S. market share with quality products at reasonable price points.

Solid wheels would be a plus so you can go tubeless tires which are safer, not prone to a quick release of all the air like a tube can do when it splits. Tubeless tires are easily repaired with a plug kit. Always have a way to inflate. I have had to plug a tire at a rest stop as I happened to get off the bike and heard a hiss of air and saw a screw in my back tire. I was able to get my kit out, remove the screw as I inserted the tool that is used to prepare the hole, and that stopped the leaking, and then I prepared the other tool with the plug and after rasping the hole a bit, quickly changed to the plug inserting tool and lost so little air, I could ride off safely at interstate speeds to get air at the next town. Even so, it doesn't always work out so well, so I say, carry a way to inflate.

Hi TMF, as with yourself and others I test rode the T120, Bobber and Speedmaster and ultimately bought the T120 (as I wanted a pillion seat). The bobber was fun and I really enjoyed it and the speedmaster is a hoot but those beach bars are horrible. I later discovered the "Maverick" kit includes straighter bars (which are possibly the bobber bars). Love the badger tank though 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Ps. The gas cap barrel can be modified very easily with a dermal tool so the key can be removed when filling up. In fact you can fit the cap but left unlocked so you never even have to use the key again!

To my surprise given my general tastes in motorcycles, I really like the look of this. It also seems like Triumph has paid attention to it's capabilities, and not just how it looks - unlike just about any other company that builds anything cruiser-ish. I would think if that rear subframe is designed to take a passenger, it should be able to handle a pair of aluminum panniers. But is there any company making them to fit this bike? That would make the bike perfect for day-to-day use. Or a decent sized trunk?

I had this, only for an hour or so, on a testride. Cruisers are not my thing but I found this extremely comfortable, fairly snappy engine aswell, it's just that the bike has next to no ground clearance, and I'm not even a super aggressive rider in the twisties but this bike has a very limited lean angle, but I expected that from a cruiser.

I just sold my Triumph Street Triple R 765 and likely putting in a deposit on a red Speedmaster this Saturday. There are limited Speedmasters here in Australia so haven’t found any dealer offering a test ride since most of these bikes sell out as soon as stock arrives. But I have had a good look at one of these at the showroom and seating is so much comfortable. And based on the reviews, sounds like riding is a joy too. Only bit I am worried about is the scraping of foot pegs. Not sure how bad that is, especially with me switching over from a Street Triple R to this one ( although not that I lean too much around the corners ).

Great video Considering a Speedmaster but I am a little bit concerned about ground clearance on the Speedmaster and pegs clipping the tarmac, what is your experience. I could not find the actual ground clearance or lean angle specifications for the Speedmaster in the Triumph sites, which I found strange, any ideas what the ground clearance actually is? May I ask whether the mid-controls from the Bobber could be added onto the Speedmaster versus the stock forward controls, and would this arrangement improve ground clearance (Pegs touching down on corners) in your opinion? Keep up the great work

21:39 Actually it does have traction control which is always on so you don´t have to think about it … though can be turned off in the settings which is easy enough .. that plus rain mode makes it completely safe and reliable in the wet .. removing the cat + after market pipes and it sounds absolutely brutal to the point where it´s almost obnoxious and unbearable .. a good tip choose pipes with built in baffling and I´m not talking about the removable DB killer :) Agree on the instrument clock, that it does look a bit cheap and nasty and the chrome duals (like on the Bonnies) would look the business .. regarding the front Brembo´s though mine stops on a dime if you grab a real hand full

The endless choice of aftermarket pipes and/or decat is quite baffling (pun intended). It's too expensive to get the desired result by trial and error. The only 1200 I've ridden is a Thruxton R demo with V&H US spec silencers - baffles out. It was close to perfect for me but the dealer said Triumph will only sell the EU spec now and I'm not going to waste £700 for no gain. I wonder if just a decat would give enough extra volume and bark, with the benefits of cleaner pick up, lower cost and retaining original looks? Decisions, decisions.
@34979Charlie
@34979Charlie 6 жыл бұрын
@@paulstredwick l changed both cat and pipes at the same time so personally I can't say what the result is with just the cat out .. but have heard on the forum's from those that have just gone the x-pipe route that it makes quite a considerable difference to the bark/growl

An excellent and informative review as ever, TMF, thanks! Is it just me (probably is!) but why do so many bikes come with such an inadequate front mudguard (aka fender) these days? Probably a matter of style over function. The guard on that Speedmaster is obviously just going to allow the engine and front end to be permanently sandblasted, or worse allow the front wheel to propel high speed gravel missiles at the radiator . You can see the crud that has been thrown at the radiator of the bike at around the 15 minute mark in your video. The mudguard is so short you also couldn't even add a functional fender extender to it. My Diavel was just the same. I like to keep my bikes looking mint, which would be difficult to do with a non-functioning front mudguard. Then again, as I say, it's probably just me and my pristine bike OCD!

I liked the handlebar cable bands - nostalgic- Triumph have always had them. Fuel tank- be good if Triumph made an optional ‘breadbox ‘ tank as I used on my ‘82 Tiger Trail. Centre stand essential if the bike doesn’t come with shaft drive. Heated grips and seat plus optional screen. Single dial okay with me.

i just was trying to figure out by your name i guess its German or German/Jewish, main reason i asked was this video is done by a UK crowd and some of his comments come from what is now the culture in Britain, comments about cruiser type bikes being for old men. for a long time the culture has been for crotch rockets, plastic missiles, so i guess this guy is comparing it with this kind of bikes Aussie cultures of riding is different. i usually ride alone on a 09 Harley Street glide, i am looking at triumphs now only because my current ride is getting a bit too heavy for me now something ,more nimble tried a few triumphs most comfy one i found was the America, loved the bobber very uncomfortable loved the triple cruiser not keen on the new styling but guess i will get there. if i dont i will just get another fatboy
