So I finally got the chance to test drive the new Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4TSI. Priced at RM148,990 for the Comfortline and RM168,990 for the Highline; the positioning of these two products are rather strategic, mainly given the drivetrain configuration that is identical, the low spec version is faster and more powerful than the competition, while the high spec variant has stuffs like LCD cluster, powered tailgate etc, that is not available in the competition.

The design is sharp and drives really well, except for the expected turbo lag. And hopefully VW Malaysia can rebuild the consumer trust by wet-clutch to all their new models

Hi Bobby, great review.. i'm considering the new tiguan vs the upcoming cx5 ( which looks amazing btw) as the new tiguan is many steps up from the old mk1. But the only issue or probably issues i have are with the after sales service.. from the DSG and the service centres etc. In you opinion, is the new tiguan with the DSG wet clutch a safe bet, interior wise have no worries on VW quality but transmissions problems are a nightmare.. thanks Bobby!

+MrKampongBoy My personal preference is the X1, looks better, handles better, and the engine is sharper. And iDrive is god, Concierge service is BMW's human Siri. Every BMW comes with Concierge service, and you can basically push a button, ask anything. ANYTHING. There's a video of me asking her to bring me to the best Arab restaurant near me, and within 3 minutes, she route my GPS to an Arab restaurant, while there's another two added as Next Destination in case i dont like the first one. That's a priceless thing to have. Proper premium stuf

+MyAquaticDiary design i prefer Koleos, size i think Koleos is larger, handling evenly matched, but the 2.5 engine and CVT in the Koleos just isn't for my taste. And the overall tech in the Koleos is also very far behind that of the Highline Tiguan.

I test drive Koleos before, the driving experience is like zen.. more on comfortable, but design is really nice & premium, only the price is a bit higher.

Not sluggish at all from 0km/h to about 130km/h. After that you'll feel its puff running out especially compared to a 2.5 mazda cx5. The thing is, Honda's 1.5 turbo beats the crap out of this 1.4 TSI when it comes to power output.

The comfortline gives you all the mechanical bits you need for the car. The only omission that i felt very important from the Highline, not only important but ones that you can't add on or modify yourself, is the keyless entry and cruise control. I would say the RM148 lacks a lot of modern features that you will find in a car that's RM100k above, but don't forget this is a car that is somewhat like an Audi Q5 in certain ways. So i would say it's worth it, and of course, that RM20k buys you ALOT more, with LCD speedo, DRL, Cruise control, Keyless entry, push start, powered boot, powered seats, navigation, 18" rims.

+Weng Kham both are comfortable, the tiguan feels slightly larger interior wise. Cx5 has some crazy technology that makes the ride, the braking, accelerating, cornering all smoother. New cx5 interior more upmarket in terms of design, but fit n finish i still think vw is ahead.

Brother Bobby, would you recommend me to buy this car over KIA Sportage? I'm ur fan from Indonesia and Sportage GT Ultimate (2.0 gasoline engine) doesn't have good image compare to Japanese cars and Tiguan 2017 is gonna enter the market this Aug. Price wise, Tiguan will be way higher than Sportage however the features in Sportage are making it a value for money car. You tested Sportage already but the engine is different from the one sold in Indonesia. Please advise :)

Bobby Ang thanks for your feedback :) Rumor has it, the new Tiguan in Indonesia will cost around 650mio (around MR 200K) too bad bcz the VW after sales service is not as good as Japanese brands (service network and spare parts availability) I probably will choose new CX5, hopefully the price will not be so steep.

for your information, the car that you had test drive was on fpk platform.. the mqb platform would be the comfort line where you can see the instrument cluster came with revolution and velocity analogue dials

Both MQB. Mane ade 1 model platform lain2, habis la duit nk sapot multi-platform. Not an economically-sound decision. Meter cluster isn't a dead giveaway of what kind of platform it uses.

+Hdj Bdj ok i'll try and get it. But as an ex subaru owner and a current audi owner, i can immediately tell you this. Subarus are indestructible. And they're so proud of this that they never bothered to look at how others design interiors in year 2017 while they still stay in 2003. Comfort i'm not sure yet, handling i'm very sure the subaru will trump the tiguan at the extremities because the tiguan is fwd, sound proofing definitely vw, styling both are acquired tastes, but at least the vw looks modern.

Tiguan is slightly smaller, but handling is definitely sharper. CRV Turbo feels faster but I have no idea yet with its high speed drivability. But those features are a killer selling point, and the big network of service centres is a plus point.
